no, at least not at the moment. the repos can co-exist in the alpha series until
further notice. This may change in the future, as we plan to distribute all
packages
from our own servers

However for now you can keep both and try installing things, the pinning should
preserve you from systemd. This is of course about alpha testing, we don't have
anything ready for production yet.

Re: [Dng] Devuan Alpha i386 - developers release series on Vagrant

2015-03-09 Thread Jaromil
dear Jeremy,

as written in my announcement to the list, Vagrant should be installed
from the website packages (yes, the wiki directions are wrong in suggesting
rubygems).

For other problems you encounter on running Vagrant, please ask on Gentoo
forums. Thanks for taking the time to test Devuan Alpha!

2015-03-09 Thread Christopher Barry
Hey all,

I just joined this list to see how it was going, and to figure out what
this project is really all about. Is 'devuan' the final name, or
simply a placeholder?

First, does the manifesto and constitution come with?

Second, how many original Debian devs / maintainers are on board?

Finally, who are the people currently running the show?

(If there's a page that tells me all this, please post a link.)

Devuan is the final name (at the moment! :P) and is really
happening. It is a fork of Debian with the clear intention of creating
and maintaining a Debian in which init freedom is guaranteed (which
initially will boil down to eradicate systemd and all its companions
from Debian). There is already an alpha release intended to be used
solely by developers and not for production (you can find the
announcement and the link in the ML archive or March), a repository
with some initial packages (the other ones will most probably be
imported directly from Debian Jessie) and a gitlab
(git.devuan.org/explore)

There exists a proposed minimal draft for a Devuan Constitution:

https://git.devuan.org/devuan/devuan-project/wikis/DevuanConstitution

that everybody acquainted with the Debian Constitution should indeed
find quite familiar :)

No clear idea about this. I know there should be at least half a dozen
DDs in the ML, but I suspect many others have been lurking around...

The Veteran Unix Admins collective is responsible for the project, and
the Dyne foundation (www.dyne.org) is providing material, technical
and moral support to the developers ;)

Hello Jaromil,

Thank you very much! I'll try soon.

...oh, I have booted my laptop (i use Debian testing here and
periodically do apt-get upgrade) and found out

ii libpam-systemd:amd64 204-8 amd64

ii libsystemd-id128-0:amd64 204-8 amd64

ii libsystemd0:amd64 215-12 amd64
ii systemd 204-8 amd64

I have this evil thing! But init is as usual pid 1, I have only
systemd-logind started.

I think my laptop need to be devuanized...

Ah, yes. That expression means did these items/ideas come over with the
fork as well or not. One of the things that made Debian special were
these democratic ideas. Unfortunately, just like in real government,
special interests can stack the deck (e.g. dominate committees) and
push things that are self serving and maybe not in the best interests
of the greater community. Things like the technical committee
appointing people (rather than a via a full vote) seems like a bad idea
to me, and should likely be revisited in Devuan.

[Dng] Finding systemd

2015-03-09 Thread etech3

Hi everybody

In a follow up to preparing for Devuan, I started going back to see if I
could find systemd. Yes I know, I know. But what I did was start by
installing just a base install of Squeeze. Just the base standard
install. The only package I added was the apt-show-versions. Now this is
a i386 install on a old Aopen server board with 2 gigs of memory.

After the base install I ran: locate systemd*. On Squeeze this is what I
got:

/etc/systemd
/etc/systemd/system
/etc/systemd/system/sockets.target.wants
/etc/systemd/system/sockets.target.wants/acpid.socket
/lib/systemd
/lib/systemd/system
/lib/systemd/system/acpid.service
/lib/systemd/system/acpid.socket
/lib/systemd/system/sudo.service
/usr/share/webmin/init/edit_systemd.cgi
/usr/share/webmin/init/mass_systemd.cgi
/usr/share/webmin/init/save_systemd.cgi

Next I will post the package list with version numbers.

I plan on doing this for Squeeze, Wheezy and Jessie.

I don't have any systemd on my squeeze. How did you manage that? Backports?

*** Welcome Christopher!

I agree with you that Devuan governance needs to differ from Debian's,
and that is must consider the general interest as well as respect the
particular.

Given the amount of speculation around what Devuan is and how it will
evolve, I'd rather give it a chance to actually get there before we can
start a discussion from a solid ground, rather than get to speak about
the shadow of aliens, and how your vision is necessarily inferior to
mine, because mine was raised by true Trolls that turn into stone when
they meditate, etc.
