resizing objects fails

2003-01-14 Thread Jan Kester
Hello

I like the functionality of Visio, love Linux and thus try out Dia (first on
my win2000 platform :-)). I run version v0.90 and find it very difficult to
give my shapes of a flowchart the proper sizes. I read that the size is
automatically adapted by the amount of text.
The normal block with text inside has angular tiptops but does not allow to
change. The decision diamond does allow to resize, but only to bigger and
not smaller. Whenever I want to make a real diagram, I can´t fit all the
symbols on one page. It is just all too big.
Is there any solution for this?

print preview

2003-01-14 Thread Jan Kester
Hi there

is there a way to see a print preview so that you know how your result will
look like?
I run Version v0.90 on win2000.

If your problem simply is fitting the diagram into one page you could
just set the scaling in the Page Setup-dialog (in the File-menu) to
"Fit to: 1 by 1".

I dont like the sound of Diagram1.dia, the way the syllables repeat.

I dont use the compression on my dia files.
Maybe i would if i could setup gedit to open and close .dia files without
my needing to zip and unzip them every time i might use it but i edit the
XML often enough and have enough hard disk space not to worry about
compression of a single file.
If the compression was holding together a whole bunch of sheets and images
in an archive that would be different but even then you can tar without
gzipping and you can zip without actually using any compression. (in fact
in zip you can do cools stuff like have an uncompressed index at the head
of the file but fully compress the rest of the archive).

I dont want to argue about the merits of compressing a file format, but i
like having the option not to do so. The vast scope and detial of the
OpenOffice.org file format is something to be seen and manages to keep
so many differnt options open.

I dont know Gnumeric enough to make a fair comment on it but if i have
time I expect i will be filing upwards of 10 usability bug reports on it.

> (although the suffix is added automatically; the user doesn't need to type
> it)

The suffix is added automatically at the next stage and it would have been
a more complicated patch to change it and make sure i did not break
anything.

At least now i know that no one has any fundamental objections to the name
change. I am not particularly concerned if the diffent languages use a
differnt more appropriate label (but i will definately need to make sure
the English locales match).

Re: resizing objects fails

2003-01-14 Thread dan . warburton

You can go into File->Page Setup and click Fit to 1 by 1 then the objects
srink to fit the page. I haven't tried it but I am thinking you
could get the right scaling by placing objects near the edges.

There is nothing called a print preview, but according to my
experiences the printed result is *very* close to what you see when
you edit a diagram. The differences are that the connection points are
visible and the scale. I suppose it could be convenient to be able to
easily set the scale to be the same as on a hardcopy...

Re: print preview

2003-01-14 Thread Alan Horkan

Short answer
No. Print Preview is not available

Longer Answer, Possible workaround would be to print to a file and then
use some sort of a postcript veiwer such as Alladin Ghostscript.

Which reminds me, i wonder what the current state of Gnome Print is
like...

As Marten says, the diagram window is already the print preview (It shows
the pagebreaks). To make the "preview" more realistic, you can
switch off the grid and connection points.

Would it be worth while having a "Print Preview" menu item that basically
just made sure the page breaks were shown and that the non printing
symbols were hidden?

hmmm, I'm not sure what you mean by "merging
the translations', but I took a stab at adding
a crude rule to .\dia\makefile.msc to install
the *.sheet.in files to the runtime area.

BTW, it needs sed, so I grabbed it from:
http://umn.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gnuwin32/sed-4.0-bin.zip

and installed it to $TOP before running the
installation makefile.

Attached is my amended .\dia\makefile.msc
that appears to handle the the full dia
runtime install environment.

A better zigzag-line creation system has been done in CVS for the basic
objects, but needs to be added to the UML objects. At some point, we will
need to make autorouting, but figuring that out is a lot of work.

I like Diagram-N.dia better than Drawing-N.dia, as that reinforces the idea
that Dia is for diagrams, not drawings. Sodipodi is for drawings. Other

Since there's a Python plugin already, I can't see any reason why a Perl

"build it and they will come", perhaps.
