Donate 1 minute of your time to test upgrades from F40 to F41

2024-09-02 Thread Miroslav Suchý

Do you want to make Fedora 41 better? Please spend 1 minute of your time and
try to run:

dnf --releasever=41 --enablerepo=updates-testing --assumeno distro-sync

This command does not replace `dnf system-upgrade`, but it will reveal
potential problems.

You may also run `dnf upgrade` before running this command.

The `--assumeno` will just test the transaction, but does not make the actual
upgrade.

In case you hit dependency issues, please report it against the appropriate
package.

Or against fedora-obsolete-packages if that package should be removed in Fedora 40. Please check existing reports
against fedora-obsolete-packages first:

https://red.ht/2kuBDPu

and also there is already lots of "Fails to install" (F40FailsToInstall)
reports:

http://bit.ly/3TcO0Ng

One note:

* you may want to run the same command with dnf5 to help test new dnf. Do not forget to add --best otherwise DNF5 hides
all problems.

For convenience here is the relevant part of Fedora Guidelines on renaming and
replacing packages:

Thank you

I also had issues with some wxGTK3 packages leftover from F37, but I guess if
there was a time these should have been obsoleted, it was back in F38 days.

The only issues I see on my system are these:

```
Downgrading:
 httpd x86_64 2.4.61-3.fc41fedora  47 k
 httpd-corex86_64 2.4.61-3.fc41fedora 1.4 M
 httpd-filesystem  noarch 2.4.61-3.fc41fedora  12 k
 httpd-tools   x86_64 2.4.61-3.fc41fedora  80 k
 mod_lua   x86_64 2.4.61-3.fc41fedora  58 k
 perl-Regexp-Pattern-License   noarch 3.11.1-5.fc41fedora 112 k
 wpa_supplicantx86_64 1:2.11-2.fc41fedora 1.7 M
```

The http downgrade is weird - the 2.4.62-2 update corresponding to
what I currently have on f40 should already be in the
f41-updates-testing repos since a month ago, but apparently it's not?

The perl-Regexp-Pattern-License and wpa_supplicant downgrades appear
to be just NVR downgrades with Release number not having been synced /
bumped correctly between branches.

Heads-up: python-urllib3 2.2.2 coming to F42/Rawhide

2024-09-02 Thread Ben Beasley
In one week (2024-09-09), or slightly later, I plan to update the
python-urllib3 package from 1.26.19 to 2.2.2[1] in F42/Rawhide. Version
2 included various breaking changes[2]; there is a migration guide [3].

After a combination of porting effort and waiting for upstreams to catch
up, this update now has a clean impact check[4] – FTBFS in COPR are
pre-existing and not attributable to the update – except for
python-wsgi_intercept, which this update *will* break. This has been
brought up to the package’s maintainers a couple of times[5][6]. A patch
is available[7], but upstream deems it “too fragile to be considered,”
and does not seem to be making active progress on urllib3 v2
compatibility. The only package that would be directly or indirectly
affected if python-wsgi_intercept were lost in Fedora is python-gabbi,
an HTTP testing library. Overall, this is unfortunate, but it doesn’t
seem like a sufficient reason to further delay progress on
python-urllib3. If I did miss anything else in impact-testing, I
apologize – let me know if I can help.

I did impact-check this in Fedora 41 as well, and shipping it there
would be technically feasible, but considering where we are in the
release cycle, the number of packages that depend indirectly on
python-urlliib3, and the lack of major known issues in the 1.x branch,
I’m going to default to Rawhide-only.

If your package has a direct build dependency on python-urllib3 (but not
only a runtime-only one, or an indirect one via e.g. python-requests),
then you should have received this email directly via cc or bcc.

Do you want to make Fedora 41 better? Please spend 1 minute of your

This command does not replace `dnf system-upgrade`, but it will reveal
potential problems.

You may also run `dnf upgrade` before running this command.

The `--assumeno` will just test the transaction, but does not make the
actual upgrade.

In case you hit dependency issues, please report it against the
appropriate package.

Or against fedora-obsolete-packages if that package should be removed
in Fedora 40. Please check existing reports against
fedora-obsolete-packages first:

https://red.ht/2kuBDPu

and also there is already lots of "Fails to install"
(F40FailsToInstall) reports:

http://bit.ly/3TcO0Ng

One note:

* you may want to run the same command with dnf5 to help test new dnf.
Do not forget to add --best otherwise DNF5 hides all problems.

For convenience here is the relevant part of Fedora Guidelines on
renaming and replacing packages:

I only got this error with dnf. As this was due to RPM Fusion and seeing
a discussion that maybe qt5-qtwebengine-freeworld is not so needed
anymore (in https://bugzilla.rpmfusion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7019) I just
removed the package. After removing qt5-qtwebengine-freeworld: no
errors.

dnf5 with --best gives me loads of errors; this while dnf no longer
gives any errors. Seems related to having RPM Fusion repositories.

In my case on two boxes I went all the way, actually did the upgrade.

Somewhat boringly it just worked in both cases.

License corrected for Weston (BSD and CC-BY-SA -> MIT and CC-BY-SA-3.0)

2024-09-02 Thread Neal Gompa
Hey all,

As an FYI, Weston's licensing was corrected when I upgraded it to
14.0.0~rc3 (13.0.95) to "MIT and CC-BY-SA-3.0" (from the previous "BSD
and CC-BY-SA"). I expect this has no meaningful impact for anyone.

Attempting to coordinate a lasem, goffice, gnumeric, abiword and gnome-chemistry-utils update for F41 and rawhide

2024-09-02 Thread Alexander Ploumistos
Hello,

I recently took over gnome-chemistry-utils and lasem, both of which
have to be updated.
After reaching out to the developer of lasem, he decided to tag a new
release with a considerable number of bug fixes and code cleanups.
It so happens that lasem is a dependency of gnome-chemistry-utils,
which currently fails to build in rawhide and F41. I have managed to
resolve the issues and also rebuild it with the new version of lasem
and in order to do that, I also had to rebuild goffice.
I have pushed these changes in pagure and I've opened a couple of PRs
for the two branches of goffice.
As far as I can understand the dependency chain, after building lasem,
next in line is goffice, then abiword and gnumeric and finally
gnome-chemistry-utils.

I'm afraid that I've hit a snag though, because I noticed a couple of
open bugs with no activity for goffice and gnumeric, both of which
have had newer releases since late May. I've added all of the
mainteners involved in this message, but I have a feeling that the
chain is broken somewhere. How can I proceed? Can a provenpackager
lend a hand?

Best regards,
A.

The wxGTK3 package does not exist anymore in Fedora 39 and later.

The only problem I get is:

Which I think is a result of the recent libre2 soname bump
that may still being worked on. Otherwise, looking good.
