AW: ApacheCon NA 2016

2016-03-06 Thread Christofer Dutz
Hi,

I got two of my 3 talks selected:

- Building FlexJS applications with maven

- Controlling Cyborgs with Apache Flex

But Alex. I thought you live in/near Seattle, that's just 100km away and the
registration fees are just $100 for comitters ... you being chair of this
project I would be a little disapointed, if you wouldn't come. It's not that
you have to take an intercontinental flight or anything.

Apache is community over code and we really need some more community in this
project. I think ApacheCon would be a great opportunity to get together,
discuss stuff, explain stuff and eventually work on tearing down some walls
that might have been built up in the past.

Please try to reconsider comming. I was looking forward to it :-(

Chris

2016-03-06 Thread Justin Mclean
Hi,

I also hope you reconsider, it would be good to have you there. And there’s a
lot of ways to be involved even if you are not am official speaker.

JFYI - It’s 12,500 km for me and I booked the tickets before I knew I was
speaking.

Thanks,
Justin

Issues as Flex Interaction Designer using Adobe CS5.5 tools on OSX (v10.9 - v10.11) looking for a solution

2016-03-06 Thread Sebastian Mohr
Dear Flex Designers,

I got a bit silent past years, because, I was keeping myself
busy with all sorts of different Adobe and Apache Flex projects
in Germany working as an Interaction Designer using Apache Flex
tools from the Adobe CS5.5 Master Collection ...
Adobe Flash Catalyst CS5.5
Adobe Flash Professional CS5.5
Adobe Flash Builder 4.6 and 4.7
Adobe Photoshop CS5.1
Adobe Illustrator CS5
Maybe you'll remember me from this contribution to Apache Flex ...
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=30749573

I came across a situation, I am still facing, to keep continuing my
work as an Interaction Designer using Adobe and Apache Flex ...

Issue 1:
My computer got stolen last December 2015

Issue 2:
I wanted to buy a new MacBook Pro, but, Apple ships their new
MacBook Pros with their newest operating system, because, Apple
does not provider a separate driver download for their Mac devices …
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204319
… and therefore, I was forced to buy a second hand MacBook from
Mid 2012, so that I could still install OSX v10.8 (Mountain Lion).

Issue 3:
Adobe stopped supporting Adobe CS5.5 since OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion). ...
https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/system-requirements-master-collection.html
… and in some forums people mention that problems arise
while using Adobe CS5.5 tool for their work …
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6725764?start=0
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1924228?start=0&tstart=0

Issue 4:
I also have a Adobe CC license (useless for Apache Flex development)
running on my MacBook Pro, and, I can't install the new Adobe Animate CC …
http://www.adobe.com/products/animate.html
… (formerly known as Adobe Flash Professional), because, OSX Mountain
Lion is not supported.

Issue 5:
A slowly, growing number of applications don't support OSX Mountain Lion
anymore (for example web browsers like Chrome or Safari etc.) :(

Possible Solution:
It would be great if Adobe could provide just a small stability update for
Adobe CS5.5 on OSX (v10.9 - v10.11), so that Interaction Designers like
me can continue to provide sweetly designed Adobe and Apache Flex
applications for our Flex customers, which is potentially also of interest to
this mailing list itself. There are even more Flex applications about to come,
if these Adobe tools would allow us to do so.

Any advice would be welcome, and, thank you for your help :)

Cheers,
Sebastian

2016-03-06 Thread Carlos Rovira
Hi Sebastian,

I know a person using CS 5.5 without problem (installing the : Java for OS
X 2015-001 comented in
one of the threads
That person is using El Capitan, so I think the software is working,
although maybe with bugs that could arise from time to time.
I think you shouldn't be blocked at all.

Just my thoughts, although I'm not in that situation...

I'm not seeing any information about a $100 price. I see $275 on the
ApacheCon website. Add in two nights of hotels at $200 each and for me,
that's significant. I don't have much of a travel budget so I have
consider whether there is some other place I should go that would benefit
Apache Flex/FlexJS more.

Based on past ApacheCons, I don't think ApacheCon is a fruitful place for
Apache Flex to recruit "more community". Apparently, the Linux Foundation
doesn't think so either. For example, I will likely take a shot at
getting a FlexJS talk accepted at the HTML5 conference again this year.
Or maybe some other conference.

My sense is that there are better places/ways for us to get the message
out and create the kind of buzz that might get the LF folks to want to
have us there. If anything, getting rejected is further proof that I'm
not the right person to be doing marketing for FlexJS since I couldn't
find the right keywords to put in my talk proposal to interest the other
reviewers and the LF.

Well, the only way I will be able to make it is if there really is a $100
price and the schedule is such that I can show up for only one day and
spend an hour or two with you guys where you aren't committed to other
things. It would have to be late morning or early afternoon so I can get
up there and back without a hotel, and not conflict with important events
in my family's schedule.

Not really, just the standard "there were so many great talks we couldn't
take them all".

Gee, I hope you didn't. In the "Apache Way" there aren't supposed to be
any "lead developers". Someone on another project just got beat up by the
board for using that title.

Anyway, chances are slim that I'll get up there to Vancouver, but you
never know...
