Is there a good reason for why you can't see allocated IP addresses under
'Network' for a Shared Network?

This is on ACS 4.5.1 RC2 in case it has worked earlier.

You can make a pull request to the gh-pages branch of our code tree and I will
get it into the svn repo.

I am working on a better way to manage the website and allow people to modify
it, just not done yet.

2015-04-29 Thread wilderrodrigues
GitHub user wilderrodrigues opened a pull request:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/210

Using the SSHCmdHelper instead of a SSH Session.

The triled ssh2 session was throwing an IOException when there was no
directory present.

We found problems, for example, when SCP the id_rsa into /root/.ssh, since
the .ssh did not exist and was not being created. Due to that, we could not
connect the Host to the Hypervisor.

I replaced the Session by the SSHCmdHelper.sshExecuteCmd and everything
worked fine.

Tested with deployDatacenter.py and XenServer 6.2

Hi,

When looking at the Git commits I often see commits there the username
is not set correctly.

For example (but don't take it personally): wilderrodrigues,
ramamurtis or sanjeev.

Could I ask all committers to review their Git settings again?

The setting is simple:

$ cd cloudstack
$ git config user.name "Wido den Hollander"

Optional:

$ git config user.email w...@widodh.nl

Thanks!

Re: [4.6] Trouble with virtual router

2015-04-29 Thread Wilder Rodrigues
Hi Mike,

I just built, deploy and created isolated network, VPC and VMS using latest
master (4.6.0). I put some screenshots on imgur: http://imgur.com/a/OmSyy.

In addition, I created FW + PF rules and SSH (using the routers’ pub ip) to the
VM:

[wrodrigues@mct-wrodrigues ~]$ ssh root@192.168.22.52
root@192.168.22.52's password:

% ls
ssh-host-dss-key.pub ssh-host-rsa-key.pub
% uname -a
Linux ttylinux_host 2.6.32-5-686-bigmem #1 SMP Mon Jun 13 05:03:09 UTC 2011
i686 unknown
%

Could you please share your XenServer SMlog with us?

Cheers,
Wilder

So when VR is coming up check its console and see any network issues.

Unfortunately, I still seem to be encountering the same issue (even
after
destroying and re-creating the VR). This seems broken on both
XenServer

I think I will give it a try with ESXi 5.1 or KVM. I'm mainly

[GitHub] cloudstack pull request: return a state instead of null in Abstrac...

2015-04-29 Thread remibergsma
GitHub user remibergsma opened a pull request:

https://github.com/apache/cloudstack/pull/211

return a state instead of null in AbstractInvestigatorImpl

When a full cluster is down or unreachable,
CloudStack currently reports everything the
same as the last known state, which is usually
Up. When it cannot reach a host and cannot
reach another host in the same cluster either,
it returns null and says "I don't know". This
prevents it from reporting the problem. Now,
we return an Alert or Disconnected state so
proper action can be taken.

Also logging was added, so we know what part
of the code put it to Alert or Disconnected.

When the host is available again, it goes
from Alert state back to Up and CloudStack
starts HA work to recover the VMs. I tested
it on 4.6/master and it works fine now.

As this is a nasty bug, we might want to fix
this also in 4.5 and 4.4.

Thanks to @dahn and @snuf for their
help solving this issue.

We're doing live testing with a system that is to go live soon(tm), using
XenServer 6.5, advanced networks (using shared networks without SG
primarily).
We have hit a few bugs, but they are related to XenServer and/or hardware
(host crashing when doing VM snapshot amongst other things).

One bug I've found which drives me crazy is that, for some reason, the VR
is versioned as 4.4.0 and needs to be upgraded.
This only happens once in a while, and I have a hard time reproducing it.
What drives me crazy is that 4.4.0 has never been installed so I have no
idea why it has that version number, and upgrading doesn't work...

It has been a few week since I updated the install, so it is closer to the
current RC than it is to the 4.5 branch.
I'll try to update it next week.

The VR/systemvm version is taken from /etc/cloudstack-release file. It is
likely you were using a 4.4 systemvm template (I’ve hit such issues in past
when testing 4.4 with 4.5 etc).

Hi Wilder - Thanks we’ll need all the ammo we have :) I’ve already done my
testings wrt XS 6.2/6.5 and KVM qemu 2.0/2.1/2.2 so will test KVM 1.5 and
VMware 5.5.

Hi Daan - makes sense, we’re “so" late with 4.5.1 that we need to focus on
4.6.0 to avoid delaying it. I’ve asked David regarding co-piloting the next
4.5.1 RC since he could be busy and I want to help with lifting some weights.
I’m planning to do basic tests with VMware today, publish new systemvmtemplates
tomorrow (I’m already done with KVM and Xen) and plan to cut a 4.5.1 RC on
Monday and if we don’t hit any blocker or regressions ACS 4.5.1 should be
released by the end of next week.

Reading the code, if testIpAddress() returns anything other than Up, Down
or null then returned status is ignored.

org.apache.* is very likely no go, it is owned by apache,

@DaanHoogland If you look at the code from where testIpAddress() is called
(for e.g. UserVmDomRInvestigator.isAgentAlive()), it only deals with return of
Up, Down and null. So I am not able to follow the use of this fix.

If you remove the VR which is 4.4, please check if the new one that gets
created is 4.5 or still 4.4?

Was this setup a fresh install or an upgrade from 4.4? It’s likely that
something went wrong in case it was an upgrade. Perhaps, there are multiple
secondary storages, in which case it could happen that one of them has an old
template pre-seeded (The template copying across zones could have failed).

machine, as we need more horse power. We worked on something similar, where we
have a cluster of KVM controlled by CloudStack in our Employee Cloud and spin
large VMs running CentOS 7.1 (we use 32 or 64GB ram). In this big VM we run KVM
again and spin up all infrastructure, ranging from hypervisors, SDN
controllers, database hosts, storage appliances, etc. The big benefit is that
networking is easy, as it is all in one box. Also, everybody uses the same
prefixes. Using a L2 VPN we connect the workstations to the dev/test
environment. All VMs can be controlled using virt-manager (like you also
showed) and it is actually CloudStack running inside CloudStack. Deploying this
VM has been automated and we’re now working on automating different scenario’s.
They can also be used as Jenkins build slaves, for example. It is work in
progress.

Long story short: Let's work together on this :-)

Remi

@koushik-das To reproduce the issue:
- create a cluster of 1 or more hypervisors. We observed this issue using
xenserver.
- spin up some vms on this cluster
- pull the plug on all hypervisors at the same time, so an unclean shutdown

Before this fix, CloudStack would not notice the hypervisors were down and
keep them Up.

After this fix, it puts the hypervisors to Alert state and notifies admin.

If you mean something else, please let me know. All tests pass so I'm not
aware of anything failing.

I haven't researched this fix extensively. However, I just want to make
sure that the alert state is not accompanied by any undesirable behavior.
Moving the hypervisors to alert state to warn the admin is fine, but we don't
want to assume that anything actually went down. In the scenario given, it is
probably more likely that there was a break in the network between the
hypervisors and mgmt server, and VMs are running fine, so as long as we are
accounting for that scenario during recovery from alert state and not assuming
the VMs are down we should be good.

I guess for KVM at least, the behavior should be similar to
stopping/starting the Agent. It makes the hypervisor go into disconnected, but
leaves the VM states as-is, and is reconciled when the Agent is restarted.

Re: [DISCUSS] State of 4.5 and testing in local environments

2015-04-29 Thread Rohit Yadav
Hi Erik,

What you’re reporting is a strange behaviour indeed. I still suspect it is
likely an environment issue as I’ve been testing 4.5 for last few months now
and have not hit anything like this. Can you try to shutdown the mgmt server
(and agent if it’s KVM) and then pre-seed a 4.5 systemvm template again using
-F (to cleanup old template) like this:

/usr/share/cloudstack-common/scripts/storage/secondary/cloud-install-sys-tmplt \
  -m /export/secondary -f <4.5 file here> -h -F

The idea here is to force remove the template and then try to provision new VRs
using that and confirm if you still reproduce this issue? It’s possible the
host has cached an old template but I’ve less idea regarding the storage
component and how it works for various hypervisors.

Regards.

Hi Remi,

Thanks. Sure we can work together on this, I guess you would be running
KVM/XenServer on KVM. Ping me if you need help on running ESX 5.x on KVM as it
requires a patched qemu system binary (prebuilt debs here
http://people.apache.org/~bhaisaab/qemu). If these nested hosts are managed by
CloudStack itself instead of virsh or virt-viewer, then use ACS 4.5 or master.

@remibergsma My comments are based on the latest master code. Based on my
reading of the code, the changes you made shouldn't have any impact on the
outcome of the test. I see that HighAvailabilityManagerImpl.investigate()
method returns status as Alert if none of the investigators are able to
determine the status. Is it possible that the test is passing due to this?

Also about the scenario that is being addressed - all hosts in a XS cluster
are shutdown by pulling the plug. Instead of immediately putting the hosts in
Alert state, it may be better to wait for some configurable amount of time and
after that if it is not possible to determine status of hosts in the cluster
then put them in Alert.

@mlsorensen Agree, no state of VMs should change since we cannot tell
because the hypervisors are unreachable. This does not change the state of the
VMs, only the hypervisors.

@koushik-das It already takes a few minutes before it determines it cannot
reach the hypersvisor (after a few retries). I didn't change anything on this.
It is not configurable right now as far as I know.

I will have a look at the test you mentioned to see what you mean.

Hey Wilder,

Thanks for the reply.

I was wondering if you could point me to the system VM template that you
used?

This is what I used and am having trouble with:

Thanks!

Re: [DISCUSS] 4.6 release management

2015-04-29 Thread Marcus
After reviewing the history as mentioned by Daan, unless we propose
and vote on a newer workflow model I think the best we can do is to
simply be more strict about commits to master. They all need to be
merges that have been tested against master before merge. This will in
theory make master more stable, but doesn't really change the workflow
we've already agreed upon and have been working under (although
bugfixes sometimes were not coming in from branches, and cherry-picked
bugfixes from branches will need to go into a branch first, tested
against master, and merged to master). We can essentially set a date
and do that any time, with some advance notice that direct commits
will be reverted.

Well, would we just swap the last release branch with master? Master
is the dev branch, and the last release is really what we have as a
 stable branch.

Log into the vm and look at the /var/log/cloud.log. It might be that
the agent isn't starting (e.g. you require non-oss build but have oss
build, and agent fails to find PremiumSecondaryStorageResource or

Re: [DISCUSS] State of 4.5 and testing in local environments

2015-04-29 Thread David Nalley
The problem is really two fold.
Cutting an RC isn't terribly time consuming, once you've done it a
dozen times or so, it goes by pretty quickly.

The problem is the time it takes to do any material testing; and that
we don't have a way of telling what the status of a candidate is
without doing lots of manual testing. We've had multiple cases of
having enough binding votes for 4.5.x candidates only for someone to
find problems. This leads me (and this could just be my perspective)
to let an RC sit for a while - get folks to test it. My experience as
a person voting is that rapid churn of RCs leads me to not even
attempt to setup a testing environment, much less do any testing. I
found that by the time I could get around to testing an RC vote had
been cancelled and it had been rerolled, sometimes twice.

I've said this before, and I'll toss it out again. I think we have to
start 'trusting' the automated tests. We find lots of problems
manually, but we don't improve the testing situation for those blocker
issues that stopped us from releasing. I'm of the opinion we should
release quickly, very quickly. But if we have to spend a week just
looking for bugs, that will never fly. So - let the standard be
automated tests - and if there's a problem, we create an automated
test for it, and solve in a week or two. That will force us to live
and die by automated tests.

Hi,

I saw couple of issue in travis.yml -

- 3rd line: "smoke/smoke/test_reset_vm_on_reboot" - it should be
"smoke/test_reset_vm_on_reboot"

- 7th line: component/test_acl_isolatednetwork - is listed twice
will be creating a ticket but wanted to inform ahead.

best,

There are more than 10 additional suites that can still be included to the

Since the current set runs comfortably I will go ahead and add more. If the

I agree that we should be relying on automated tests.

It's too hit or miss (not to mention slow) when we put so much weight on
semi random testing.

Thanks for your comments, everyone.

So, it looks like I got it to work. I logged in and then immediately
restarted networking services.

/etc/init.d/networking restart

Once I did that, I ran ifconfig and saw that the VR had the necessary IP
addresses and I was able to successfully ping the CS MS.

Seems like something is wrong here that I needed to do this.

Should I open a ticket for this?

Re: [DISCUSS] State of 4.5 and testing in local environments

2015-04-29 Thread Abhinandan Prateek
Yes, lot of sanity testing can be accomplished by the automated test suites
that we already have.

There are still lot of tests that can be run using the travis-CI, (need to see
how many more without loading the travis system). Some of the companies
including Shapeblue are already running most or all of the test cases. This
means that the latest branches (4.5, 4.6) already have a level of sanity.

At this stage we should define the amount of coverage that automation provides
and also look at the areas where automation is failing, and work towards
covering it. We need this as we continue to find issues that are not covered
by automation.

I agree that while releasing if issues are found then we fix them and also
write tests so that these do not reoccur.

 Hi all,

 ### 4.5 Release Effort

I’ve been exhaustively testing ACS 4.5 wrt Xen 6.2, Xen 6.5, KVM (qemu
2.0, 2.3) and I feel we’re pretty good but we need testing efforts and I
want to help drive efforts to releasing ACS 4.5.1 -- if you’ve any issues
that you would like to get fixed that are either regressions or blockers
can you please share on this thread? If we don’t find any blockers or
regressions let us invest in ACS 4.5 testing and release it soon. For
other minor issues we can always fix them and release 4.5.2 etc if and
 when needed in future.

Regarding my 4.5 testing - I’ve tested basic vm life cycle operations
(deploy, start, stop, destroy/expunge, migrate to another host, migrate to
 another storage pool, deploy using iso) for all cases and found no issues;

KVM with basic zone (with/without security groups, SG blockers were found
 and fixed)
KVM with Adv zone (with/without security groups, both isolated network and
VPC worked, networking issues were found and fixed)
XenServer 6.2 with basic and adv zones (with/without security groups, no
 SG issues found)
XenServer 6.5 with basic and adv zones (with/without security groups, SG
 blockers found and fixed)

I found one issue that could be a blocker (if it’s not a hardware/env
issue) -- when using security groups in advance zone with a dedicated vlan
id (say vlan://500), I was unable to access the VMs (CPVM, SSVM, VR or
user vms) though all normal vm_life cycles see

Well, I seem to be able to reproduce this every time I start up the VR in
my environment.

I'm not sure, though, if this is only my environment or if other people who
are making brand new CS clouds with 4.6 also see this issue.

Re: [4.6] Trouble with virtual router

2015-04-29 Thread Mike Tutkowski
I logged into the VR, noticed the IP addresses weren't showing up as
expected when I ran ifconfig, then I restarted networking services, which
set the IP addresses up properly.
