2015-02-18 Thread Daan Hoogland
Rajani, did you triage them? Maybe some of those are fixed in commits
after the release. In that case they can be marked with all of 4.3.3,
4.4.3 and 4.5.0. Otherwise we can still decide to put them on higher
versions or on 'future'

2015-02-18 Thread Rajani Karuturi
No Daan. I haven't triaged yet. I tried to mark them as released in jira
and it showed me the open issues.
I will try git grep for any commits in 4.3, 4.4 or 4.5. But, it would be
difficult to co-relate unless the commits have bug ids.

4.3.2 has 158 issues[1] and 4.4.2 has 2 open issues[2]

[devcloud-kvm] what is the password for root?

2015-02-18 Thread Wilder Rodrigues
Hi all,

I’m preparing a devcloud-kvm test environment based on the wiki
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/devcloud-kvm

Already got network sorted and also got my devcloud-kvm profile running (see
details below signature), but when trying to ssh into 192.168.10.1 or
172.17.10.1, the password given on the wiki page doesn’t ork.

Would any of you, by any chance, know which password does the root user have? :)

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Wilder

Hi All,

I have found this error in management server log file saying that usage
server is not running, but usage server is still running. I am using two
management servers, on Dec 27 2014 i have rebooted manually one of the
management server, and the log is showing that date, from that date onwards
iam not getting usage records. Is this BUG?
I heard that this is fixed in 4.3.

If not what is the procedure to generate usage records again?

Re: [VOTE] Apache CloudStack 4.5.0 RC3

2015-02-18 Thread Nux!
Hi,

An attempt to upgrade from 4.4.1 to 4.5 RC3 was successful, so were several
basic tests, so I'm reverting my -1 to +1 as far as I am concerned.

RE: Usage Records not Generating.

2015-02-18 Thread Kishan Kavala
Rajasekhar,
I do not see any errors in the usage server logs posted earlier. As per mgmt
server heartbeat check, usage server is not updating usage_job tables also. Did
you try restarting usage server?

Hi All,

I have found this error in management server log file saying that usage server
is not running, but usage server is still running. I am using two management
servers, on Dec 27 2014 i have rebooted manually one of the management
server, and the log is showing that date, from that date onwards iam not getting
usage records.Is this BUG?
I heard that this is fixed in 4.3.
https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-5613

If not what is the procedure to generate usage records again?

Hi Kishan,

I have restarted the usage server, but still i did not get the usage
records and even i generated the usage record from cloudmonkey,usage_job
host is showing NULL.The usage server is unable to get the host id in
usage_job.previously i am getting usage records, this issue arises after the
directly reboot of one of my management server and slave database with out
taking any precautions.

Any Suggesstions?
The configuration files also looks good.

Regards,
Rajasekhar.

Re: Your thoughts on using Primary Storage for keeping snapshots

2015-02-18 Thread Punith S
+1 with this feature.

like Logan said the current snapshot is just a copy of VDI/vmdk/qcow2's to
the secondary storage
hence the current feature acts as a backup feature taking a long time.

also the current cloudstack storage framework is not allowing the third
party storage vendors like cloudbyte and others to leverage their backend
storage snapshot feature where file systems support Copy on Write.

for example : In cloudbyte elastistor which is based on zfs filesystem, it
allows to take multiple snapshots within seconds.
and a volume clones can be created from each snapshot.
hence if the VDI/vmdk/qcow2's are already residing in
the volume, the clones will just replicate the
existing virtual disks. hence there will be no overhead of copying a
snapshot to a new volume or primary storage over the
network.

hence there should be an option provided to leverage a snapshot and
creating a volume out of it to the corresponding backend storage provider
in use.

thanks

Hi RajaSekhar,

You can review database connection settings in your management server
db.properties file. also verify that

usage.sanity.check.interval settings in your global conf.

/etc/cloudstack/usage/db.properties

/etc/cloudstack/management/db.properties

Thank You.

Hi Kishan,

I have restarted the usage server, but still i did not get the usage
records and even i generated the usage record from cloudmonkey,usage_job
host is showing NULL.The usage server is unable to get the host id in
usage_job.previously i am getting usage records, this issue arises after
the

directly reboot of one of my management server and slave database with out
taking any precautions.

Any Suggesstions?
The configuration files also looks good.

Hi All,

I have found this error in management server log file saying that usage
server is not running, but usage server is still running. I am using two
management servers, on Dec 27 2014 i have rebooted manually one of the
management server, and the log is showing that date, from that date
onwards

iam not getting usage records. Is this BUG?
I heard that this is fixed in 4.3.

If not what is the procedure to generate usage records again?

Hi Wido, Ilya and Marcus,

Daan said that you might now the password. Do you know it? :)

The apache wiki page says the password for the root account on the devcloud-kvm
is “password”. But I tried it and it doesn't work.

In order to deploy a datacenter, I need the host root password. :(

Any idea?

Thanks in advance.

That bit I know… But have to get to the guest VM console.

I have a CentOS 6.4 with qemu-kvm and libvirt. Everything is running fine.

Thanks for the quick replies. :)

Re: [devcloud-kvm] what is the password for root?

2015-02-18 Thread Nux!
You can use virt-manager for that, similar to the virtualbox interface.
http://virt-manager.org/

On the server:
yum install virt-manager xorg-x11-xauth dejavu-lgc-sans-fonts

Logout from the ssh session, start X11 on your OSX and re-login to the server
with "ssh -X", then type "virt-manager", this GUI will run over SSH. This will
allow you to stop/start/VNC etc.

ec attribute in test_region

2015-02-18 Thread Daan Hoogland
I have been looking at the simulator results for test_regions and it
elludes me what the message "Problem with getting the ec attribute"
means. It is a json marshalling error and the 'ec' parts suggests aws,
is that correct? the test says required_hardware=false which makes
sense for test_regions but not if amazon is involved. Any testguru
that can point me in the right direction?

thanks,

Remember this one? CLOUDSTACK-7319

2015-02-18 Thread Remi Bergsma
Hi,

This summer we had some serious issues with creating snapshots on XenServer,
see CLOUDSTACK-7319 for details. Long story short, to copy the ‘dd’ command was
used and that hammered dom0 until it would crash/fence. The script that did the
copy at the time was vmopsSnapshot. We added two flags: iflag=direct and
oflag=direct. Problem solved from 4.4.0 and on you’d expect.

We just had a hypervisor crashing due to heavy dd load again. Eventually, it
could not reach the storage any more so it fenced. When investigating, we
found that the copy is now done again without the direct flags. The reason is
that the script has been removed and that a xapi plugin is now used instead.
Problem is that this does not use the direct flags :-s So our issue is back.

/etc/xapi.d/plugins/copy:
def dd_vdi__(src_dev, dest_dev):
os.system('dd if=/dev/%s of=/dev/%s bs=2M' % (src_dev, dest_dev))

We will be hot fixing all hypervisors and add the flags asap.

This happens from 4.4 and on if you’re using XenServer 6.2.5 (which is 6.2.0
with patch XS62ESP1004). If you run this XenServer version, I’d patch the copy
script asap.

Regards,
Remi

Re: [devcloud-kvm] what is the password for root?

2015-02-18 Thread Marcus
Are you using the Ubuntu or CentOS version? The Ubuntu one may not
allow root by default (standard for Ubuntu), but might be user
'ubuntu' and password 'password', from which you can sudo.

Re: Your thoughts on using Primary Storage for keeping snapshots

2015-02-18 Thread Mike Tutkowski
So, I spoke with Edison a couple months ago about my desire to take
snapshots on SolidFire's SAN instead of a making a backup on secondary
storage.

As Edison explained, CloudStack is theoretically flexible enough to
accommodate this if the developer implements the SnapshotStrategy interface
and orchestrates what needs to be done.

I went ahead and implemented this approach successfully in XenServer
(although, as I mentioned earlier, not in as ideal a fashion as I would
have liked due to issues in XenServer). However, along the way, I found
that there was code in CloudStack "core" that assumed snapshots would be
stored on secondary storage.

I went ahead and made this core logic more flexible in 4.6 and so 4.6 is
the first release that I will be able to offer the ability for users to
take CloudStack snapshots that are stored on my SAN instead of on secondary
storage.

I then implemented a custom DataMotionStrategy to use with my snapshots so
that I could create templates for general use in CloudStack and so I could
make CloudStack volumes from my snapshots.

Again...I know this thread is more about RBD, but I thought this might be
of interest as an FYI.

I opened https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/CLOUDSTACK-8265. This
can be downgraded if popular opinion agrees that it only deserves
mention in the release notes, however it should be easy to fix. In a
nutshell, new guest OS types were added (e.g. Ubuntu 14.04, CentOS 7,
maybe others), but they were only set up to work with XenServer.

Re: Query on snapshot and cloning for managed storage

2015-02-18 Thread Mike Tutkowski
Yep, it is unfortunate that XenServer is not as flexible as ESXi is in this
regard. It means we can't use our backend snapshot technologies. We have to
make a new volume and use front-end CPU cycles and network bandwidth to
copy the VDI.

Not an ideal situation, but it's what we can offer in CS 4.6 given the
current state of XenServer.

I have sent an e-mail to XenServer's dev@ mailing list about this, but have
not received a response (I probably sent the message about a month ago).
Perhaps Tim Mackey (who I have CCed here) will be able to help us get this
feature request into them.

It just depends on the SAN as to whether or not that many volumes will be a
problem. It won't be a problem for SolidFire and the SolidFire SAN
de-duplicates blocks inline on a 4-KB boundary, so this extra data written
to the SAN will lead to very little extra data actually being written to
the SAN (and the process of copying from the hypervisor to the SAN will be
much faster than copying from the hypervisor to NFS in most situations).

@Marcus: really weird! I found some presentations (form you) around April last

I’m using the CentOS one and the host OS is also CentOS, but the 6.4 version. I

In ACS 4.5.0 Template Delete Button Missing in UI? is this by design?

This would be a major bug (for some folks who operate public clouds with

Re: [ACS450] Template Delete Button Missing in UI

I don't think it's missing.

You need to go into the details view for the template and select the
applicable zone.

You should then be able to delete the template.

Re: [ACS450] Template Delete Button Missing in UI

2015-02-18 Thread Marcus
Yeah, the template view is much nicer in 4.5. Instead of having the
template list littered with the templates repeated for each zone, the
template list shows one entry for each template, then you can click on
the template and see its status in each zone.

2015-02-18 Thread ilya musayev

Mike,

Good catch, i did see the view change, but i was under impression that
by rolling over the quick view (+) i'd see the delete button. Instead
quickview shows nothing.

I pressed on the template and i see it.

Thanks
ilya

You need to go into the details view for the template and select the
applicable zone.

You should then be able to delete the template.

Libvirt & RBD caching

2015-02-18 Thread Logan Barfield
Our current deployment is KVM with Ceph RBD primary storage. We have
rbd_cache enabled, and use "cache=none" in Qemu by default.

I've been running some tests to try to figure out why our write speeds
with FreeBSD are significantly lower than Linux. I was testing both
RBD and local SSD storage, with various cache configurations. Out of
all of them the only one that performed close to our standard Linux
images was local SSD, Qemu cache=writeback, FreeBSD gpt journal
enabled.

I've been reading on various lists the reasons and risks for
cache=none vs cache=writeback:
- cache=none: Safer for live migration
- cache=writeback: Ceph RBD docs claim that this is required for data
integrity when using rbd_cache

>From what I can tell performance is generally the same with both,
except in the case of FreeBSD.

What is the current line of thinking on this? Should be using 'none'
or 'writeback' with RBD by default? Is 'writeback' considered safe
for live migration?

I think the main problem is that FreeBSD uses ide/scsi and Linux uses
VirtIO.

Have you tried running FreeBSD 10 with the OS type set to Ubuntu for
example?

None should still be ok, since librbd does the caching. It's not Qemu
who does the caching.

We're running FreeBSD with VirtIO. Disk is VirtIO in the libvirt
config, and shows up as a 'vtbd' device in /dev. I'm kind of stumped
on where the performance discrepancy could be coming from.

I reset the counter on the findbugs in the slowbuild. After the build

What tests have you done exactly?
I'll try to replicate them in my setup.

FreeBSD also seemed slower to me, though I was more concerned with the network
throughput, it struggles to saturate 1Gbps whereas linux ..just flies.
I would have loved to be able to use pfSense more seriously, but performance
sucked in a VM.

2015-02-18 Thread Rajani Karuturi
Thanks for taking care of 4.4 Daan.

I triaged for 4.3 and moved some of them to Future and a few to 4.5

I marked 4.4.2 and 4.3.2 as released in Jira.

Here is what I followed
1. all sub-tasks or marker tasks moved to Future
2. moved some of the doc issues to Future and a few to 4.5
3. resolved bugs with commit ids in the comments
4. moved a few issues which i thought are critical to 4.5

These are the issues which I think should be fixed in 4.5:

Re: [devcloud-kvm] what is the password for root?

2015-02-18 Thread Rohit Yadav

Hi Wilder,

I use this ansible based tool to setup my one node DevCloud KVM setup
locally on a VM or baremetal: https://github.com/bhaisaab/peppercorn
(may need suitable changes as per your environment).

Every time I build stuff, I copy jars from local build dir to KVM host's
/usr/share/cloudstack-agent and cloudstack-common. In fact, I use this
using CloudStack. So a VM running in basic zone no SG can be used as a
KVM host using peppercorn.

yum install virt-manager xorg-x11-xauth dejavu-lgc-sans-fonts

Logout from the ssh session, start X11 on your OSX and re-login to the server with "ssh
-X", then type "virt-manager", this GUI will run over SSH. This will allow you to
stop/start/VNC etc.

That bit I know… But have to get to the guest VM console.

I have a CentOS 6.4 with qemu-kvm and libvirt. Everything is running fine.

I’m trying this here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/569418/how-to-start-a-kvm-guest-as-single-user-mode

Will let you know if it works.

Thanks for the quick replies. :)

Cheers,

Hi Nux,

Thanks for the reply… :)

Thats my first time setting this up. So, to be really honest, I do not know how
to do what you just mentioned. :(

Will google it.. or perhaps you can give tips. :)

Cheers,
Wilder

Re: Your thoughts on using Primary Storage for keeping snapshots

2015-02-18 Thread Rohit Yadav

Sounds like a good idea.

On Wednesday 18 February 2015 10:29 PM, Mike Tutkowski wrote:

So, I spoke with Edison a couple months ago about my desire to take
snapshots on SolidFire's SAN instead of a making a backup on secondary
storage.

As Edison explained, CloudStack is theoretically flexible enough to
accommodate this if the developer implements the SnapshotStrategy interface
and orchestrates what needs to be done.

May be we can refactor the core to not assume that snapshots be
available only on secondary storage and implement a SnapshotStrategy
class that user can choose via a global setting, the core reads which
strategy it is and based on that decides that to assume.

I think the bigger idea I'm seeing here is to allow primary storage to
be used as a staging storage, where both (immutable, so once made no one
changes them) snapshots and even templates can be stored and migrated in
background to secondary storage. The implementation would be easiest for
NFS and local storage, not sure about others, and except for Xen (since
snapshots are differential/incremental) it should be easier for KVM,
VMWare etc using full (immutable) snapshots.

Again...I know this thread is more about RBD, but I thought this might be
of interest as an FYI.

Keeping snapshots on primary storage would be a huge performance bonus,
not just for RBD but other storage technologies as well.

I think it's a good idea, as I've seen snapshots taking too much time
because of network latency issues.

+1 with this feature.

like Logan said the current snapshot is just a copy of VDI/vmdk/qcow2's to
the secondary storage
hence the current feature acts as a backup feature taking a long time.

also the current cloudstack storage framework is not allowing the third
party storage vendors like cloudbyte and others to leverage their backend
storage snapshot feature where file systems support Copy on Write.

for example : In cloudbyte elastistor which is based on zfs filesystem, it
allows to take multiple snapshots within seconds.
and a volume clones can be created from each snapshot.
hence if the VDI/vmdk/qcow2's are already residing in
the volume, the clones will just replicate the
existing virtual disks. hence there will be no overhead of copying a
snapshot to a new volume or primary storage over the
network.

hence there should be an option provided to leverage a snapshot and
creating a volume out of it to the corresponding backend storage provider
in use.

thanks

Whatever way you think makes the most sense.

Either way, I'm working on this for XenServer and ESXi (eventually on

KVM,

I expect) for managed storage (SolidFire is an example of managed

storage).

Well...count me in on the general-purpose part (I'm already working
on that
and have much of it working).

If someone is interested in implementing the RBD part, he/she can
