Title:
[PowerMac7,3] GPU compositors do not work

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
On Ubuntu MATE 16.04 one can select 4 compositing modes via MATE Tweak
(german translation):
  1. Marco (kein Komposit)
  2. Marco (Programmkomposit)
  3. Marco (Compton GPU-Komposit)
  4. Compiz (anspruchsvolle Schreibtischeffekte mit GPU-Beschleunigung)

On my PowerMac7,3 G5 with a Radeon 9650 Pro only the 1st one works
properly. The 2nd one works, but more sluggish and a jerkier mouse
pointer. 3 and 4 trash the desktop showing wrong colours. Only VERY
jerky mouse movement is possible then. The desktop is no longer in a
usable state any longer, you can't click on anything. Restarting the
desktop with "systemctl restart lightdm" from console returns the
desktop usable (defaulting to 1st compositor.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-24 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
@Fritz:

>From the XorgLog.txt you posted I gather that you are running the "ATI
Rage 128 PRO AGP 4x" in a 15bpp screen mode, so no 24bpp true color,
which causes your blotchy images:

[25.931] (EE) Screen 0 deleted because of no matching config section.
[25.931] (II) UnloadModule: "modesetting"
[25.931] (II) FBDEV(0): Creating default Display subsection in Screen
section
"Default Screen Section" for depth/fbbpp 15/16

Do you use some config-file in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ or is this the
default behauviour of the ATI Rage 128 PRO in your Power Mac 3,1?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-25 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Had a closer look at your Xorg.log:

[25.862] (II) LoadModule: "r128"
[25.863] (WW) Warning, couldn't open module r128
[25.863] (II) UnloadModule: "r128"
[25.863] (II) Unloading r128
[25.896] (EE) Failed to load module "r128" (module does not exist, 0)
[25.896] (II) LoadModule: "modesetting"

xorg tries to load the appropriate driver for your ATI Rage, wich is
"r128". Since this driver is not found, it uses the generic
"modesetting" driver, which in turn resorts to a 15bpp framebuffer.

Just found out that the needed xserver-xorg-video-r128 package is no
longer installed by default in Yakkety. Maybe this is also the case in
Xenial. So the easy solution for you would be to "sudo apt-get install
xserver-xorg-video-r128" and reboot. Maybe you get an accelerated 24bpp
desktop again without needing a supplementary xorg.conf!

Nope it is the other way round. The background image is 24bpp but the
display driver has to show it on an 15/16bpp screen - it needs to reduce
the colours somehow which makes the image appear blotchy. Icons don't
have that many gradients which leaves them looking crisp on 15/16bpp.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-26 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Check your boot messages with "journalctl -k" and your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log then you will get a hint what went wrong with r128.

On current Ubuntu versions there is no need for an xorg.conf, only if
you need to tune some specific parameters. No fiddling around with "sudo
Xorg-configure" needed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-27 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
"r128" is the appropriate driver for your card but obiously does not
work properly on your hardware. It would be a good idea to let the
upstream devs know that. xorg/driver/xf86-video-r128 is actively
maintained and still receives patches (last one 8 days ago). You could
file a bug against upstream:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=r128 Just be sure
to have a complete Xorg.log ready to post this bug upstream and state
that it happens on an Apple PowerMac 3,1.

The "Invalid ROM contents"-line does not matter very much, it seems
pretty standard on PPC-Apple. My Powerbooks are working fine also though
this error shows up.

In the meantime you could try to get one of the other drivers
"modesetting", "fbdev", "fbdevhw" to work with 24 bit depth. You can use
my xorg.conf as starting point and edit it manually. Just put it in
/etc/X11.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1541082] Re: [PowerMac3, 1] Blotchy GUI graphics for images

2016-07-29 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Added the upstream bug to this tracker. Then I realized that strictly
speaking this bug "X doesn't start with r128 driver (ATI RAGE)
[powerpc]" has a different meaning from this one here "blotchy
graphics". I think it's best to create a new Ubuntu Xorg bug and add the
upstream info there.

Sorry for the noise!

@Fritz:

Your xorg.conf looks fine. After altering parameters check your Xorg.log after
you restarted X, to look what exactly went wrong with the driver you selected
xorg.conf. Just use the different drivers "modesetting", "fbdev", "fbdevhw"
with different bit depths and see what happens.
If your monitor is capacle also always use the native resolution of your
monitor. The Rage 128 is able to do 1920x1080 if you got the most recent PM 3,1
(http://identimac.com/modelDetails/Power%20Macintosh%20G4/23.html)

For the sake of correctness I added a new bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/xorg-server/+bug/1607891

If you like just add the relevant data with "apport-collect" to this bug
after "r128" failed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1575391] [NEW] GPU compositors do not work on r300-class Radeon cards on PPC hardware

2016-04-26 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu MATE 16.04 one can select 4 compositing modes via MATE Tweak (german
translation):
1. Marco (kein Komposit)
2. Marco (Programmkomposit)
3. Marco (Compton GPU-Komposit)
4. Compiz (anspruchsvolle Schreibtischeffekte mit GPU-Beschleunigung)

On my PowerMac G5 7,3 with a Radeon 9650 Pro only the 1st one works properly.
The 2nd one works, but more sluggish and a jerkier mouse pointer. 3 and 4 trash
the desktop showing wrong colours. Only VERY jerky mouse movement is possible
then. The desktop is no longer in a usable state any longer, you can't click on
anything. Restarting the desktop with "systemctl restart lightdm" from console
returns the desktop usable (defaulting to 1st compositor.
Same problem on my PowerBook 5,6.

2016-05-01 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
1) It is not on the list you linked. It is a
http://identimac.com/modelDetails/PowerBook%20G4/4.html
Same problem on my PowerMac G5
(http://identimac.com/modelDetails/Power%20Mac%20G5/5.html) with a Radeon 9650
(http://www.welovemacs.com/atig59650.html).

2) I am missing a flicker and tearingfree desktop experience (e.g.
browsing, watching videos, moving windows around). Well, of course it's
a nice to have and no must. "Compton GPU composit" provides the best
desktop experience, at least it does on my amd64 box with newer AMD
graphics hardware.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1432949]

2016-05-06 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Built piglit from svn on Ubuntu MATE 16.04 ppc. Already the sanity test fails,
specifically:
root@T800:~/build/piglit# /root/build/piglit/bin/gl-1.0-readpixsanity -auto -fbo
RGB(A) worst-case error was 6.641274 bits at (32, 80)
expected (0.840188, 0.394383, 0.783099, 0.798440)
got (0.75, 0.784309, 0.396076, 0.839211)
Depth worst-case error was 23.862089 bits at (107, 6)
expected 0.911647; got 0.002813.
Stencil failed at (0, 1).
Expected 255; got 233.
PIGLIT: {"result": "fail" }

But I must admit that I've no experience with piglit, built and used it
for the first time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1432949]

2016-05-06 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Patched on top on 79b0e13913b5189bb8629e80439fea746f99fe79 and it works!
Many thanks!

Machine used is a PowerMac G5 7,3 with an AGP Radeon 9600 Pro (Mac
edition). Running Compton composting manager (Ubuntu MATE 16.04) and it
runs without glitches so far, colours look good. Only thing I noticed is
the desktop gets unresponsive and the mouse pointer very jerky during
youtube video playback.

Will try Piglit tests the next days.

2016-05-06 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Yes, composting.

Means a more usable task switcher. And desktop/icon animations.

Title:
[PowerMac7,3] GPU compositors do not work

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
On Ubuntu MATE 16.04 one can select 4 compositing modes via MATE Tweak
(german translation):
  1. Marco (kein Komposit)
  2. Marco (Programmkomposit)
  3. Marco (Compton GPU-Komposit)
  4. Compiz (anspruchsvolle Schreibtischeffekte mit GPU-Beschleunigung)

On my PowerMac7,3 G5 with a Radeon 9650 Pro only the 1st one works
properly. The 2nd one works, but more sluggish and a jerkier mouse
pointer. 3 and 4 trash the desktop showing wrong colours. Only VERY
jerky mouse movement is possible then. The desktop is no longer in a
usable state any longer, you can't click on anything. Restarting the
desktop with "systemctl restart lightdm" from console returns the
desktop usable (defaulting to 1st compositor.

I'm back in OSX 10.5 side until things cool down for the browsers in

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1583849] Re: Firefox > 44 is broken on all big-endian architectures

2016-12-12 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Yes, Firefox is in Xenial's repository but not in Yakkety's or Zesty's:

Title:
Firefox > 44 is broken on all big-endian architectures

Status in Mozilla Firefox:
  Fix Released
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
OK, the reason I'm posting back here, running Lu 16.04 on an PPC
  iBook, and MATE/XFCE 16.04 on a PM ST. . . did a dist-upgrade today,
so it now running the new "22" kernel and saw in the list of upgrades
new updates to FF and T-bird . . . on both machines after reboot FF
window frame loads . . . and then crashes . . . no data is ever filled
  into the browser window.

The iBook error says it "doesn't have enough memory to report the
problem" . . . and on the PM . . . apparently it says the error report
was "corrupted" . . . no launchpad window opened in the browser when I
clicked on the "report the problem."

Tried to revert to the old kernel in the iBook several times,
seemingly failed to boot the old one . . . shut it down.

I went to the PM running 16.04 U-MATE and tried the same dist-upgrade
via console there, that upgrade was much larger than the Lu system,
but subsequently FF also then failed to launch w/o crashing . . .
installed Midori to make an apple user post, but when I tried to start
a new thread there Midori crashed as well.

  I ran "apt-get -f install" in both the iBook & the PM . . . nothing
showed up. No "comment" in the terminal during the upgrade asking any
questions or reporting "problems" . . . but FF is kaput

Title:
dist-upgrade & FF upgrade breaks FF & Midori 16.04 PPC

Status in Mozilla Firefox:
  Confirmed

I'm back in OSX 10.5 side until things cool down for the browsers in
  16.04 PPC Lu & U-MATE/XFCE.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1583849] Re: Firefox > 44 is broken on all big-endian architectures

2016-10-12 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
@K1773R:
What I was trying to point out is, that Firefox is not part of the daily iso of
Ubuntu MATE 16.10 of today (12.10.2016). An error or is it gone for sure?

Unlike yesterdays Xenial daily iso where Firefox 47 lives quite happily
and works fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1544936] Re: PPC: no mpeg-2 video playback

2016-02-22 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
I can not trigger this bug on my PowerBook 5,6. I get the same "libGL
error: failed to load driver: r300"-errors, but the mpeg2 video I tested
is played with default settings (video output set so automatic).

You can check which output modules are availabe on your machine with
"vlc -l | grep -i videooutput":

$ vlc -l | grep -i videoausgabe
VLC media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.2-0-g6259d80)
  directfb DirectFB-Videoausgabe http://www.directfb.org/
  gl OpenGL-Videoausgabe (experimentell)
  xcb_glxOpenGL GLX Videoausgabe (XCB)
  aa ASCII-Art-Videoausgabe
gles1 Videoausgabe basierend auf OpenGL für Integrierte
Systeme
  xcb_x11X11-Videoausgabe (XCB)
  yuvYUV-Videoausgabe
  xcb_xv XVideoausgabe (XCB)
  caca Farbige ASCII-Art-Videoausgabe
gles2 Videoausgabe basierend auf OpenGL für Integrierte
Systeme 2
  vdummy Dummy-Videoausgabe
  vdummy Statistiken-Videoausgabe

You can test the output modules specifically, e.g. with "vlc -V xcb_xv".
On my PowerBook 5,6 directfb shows no picture and gles1 shows a broken
picture. The rest works, albeith some very slowly.

VLC (media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.2-0-g6259d80)) does
not display video encoded with mpeg-2, only audio. The videos are not
  css-encrypted.

Other formats like mpeg4, h.264 or h.265 work well with VLC!

DVD playback with VLC failed too.

Just reckognized that this but is not about output modules but
Input/Codec... Sorry, my fault!

But nevertheless my machine plays mpeg2 files with Input/Codec
Decode=Auto just fine.

Me too can confirm this bug on my Powerbook 5,8. Workaround of 16 bit
defaultdepth is successful, albeit sub-optimal.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1620286] Re: firefox crashed with SIGSEGV in moz_abort()

2018-07-10 Thread ernsteiswuerfel
Hiya! Thanks for your feedback. But as the bug was on 16.10 and 16.04
ist the most recent version for PowerPC machines (which is phased out
furthermore) additional testing won't make much sense.
