[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1900168] Re: touchpad motion stops responding sporadically in 20.10 mate beta

2020-10-17 Thread Sai Vinoba
I had similar issue on my HP laptop with elantech trackpad, where
trackpad would not be responsive immediately after login. The buttons
would still work, external (USB) mouse would also work.

In my case the fix was to remove synaptics driver and let libinput
handle trackpad.

sudo apt remove xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
sudo apt install xserver-xorg-input-libinput

I also created a symlink for 40-libinput.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
although it may not be needed (not present in UM 20.04).

sudo mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d
sudo ln -s /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-libinput.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/

A reboot was required for changes to take place properly.

a couple of minutes after boot, the touchpad stops responding (can't

  Kernel: 5.8.0-23-generic #24-Ubuntu
  OS: Mate 20.10 beta

The Trackpoint (the nipple in the middle of the keyboard) and external
mouse continue to function. The trackpoint however, moves much slower
  than usual.

  EDIT:

Restarting lightdm.service fixes the problem temporarily. However, shortly
after logging back in the touchpad stops responding again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 269441] Re: Trash always full

2020-10-17 Thread Sai Vinoba
This issue is a combination of Caja and trash applet from what I see,
not necessarily only issue with trash applet. On MATE (Caja) in other
distros like Debian, even LinuxMint, we get a dialog to empty trash from
external drive to save space on that drive. If we agree trash is emptied
and trash icon reflects status correctly. If we eject without emptying
trash, the trash-icon stays full. However, on Ubuntu MATE there is no
pop-up dialog unlike in other distros when there is deleted content; it
just ejects the medium. UM is deviating from default behavior.

on virt-manager and default volume is muted but when I tried on
virtualbox, volume was normal (at about 80%). I am testing on Ubuntu

On Mate, the LightDM Gtk Greeter can't use the user background. It
works fine on other DEs like Xfce.

From what I understand, LightDM and/or the Gkt greeter (not sure which
one handles the background) gets the background path from Gsettings,
so I assume it can't find the one from Mate, which stores it in
  "org.mate.background picture-filename".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1929915] [NEW] "Software Sources" fails to launch from Discover when tried to launch from applications list (kf.kio.gui: "Could not find the program 'lxqt-sudo'")

2021-05-27 Thread Sai Vinoba
Public bug reported:

Release: Kubuntu Groovy (also affects focal, hirsute)
SW, version: software-properties-qt, 0.99.3.1 (for groovy but also affects
version on focal)

How to reproduce:
1) Launch Discover.
2) Search for (or scroll to) 'software sources', select the 'Software Sources'
from the search result.
3) Click on 'Launch'.

Expected:
The application launches, possibly asking for admin password.

Actual:
Does not launch (on groovy). On focal, launches with error (Snapshot attached).
However, if we try to access software sources from 'Settings', it launches
properly.

When launched from terminal, it was seen that discover was trying to use
`lxqt-sudo` and failing since it was not installed. Error message as below.
`kf.kio.gui: "Could not find the program 'lxqt-sudo'"`

Whereas when we access 'Software Sources' from 'Settings', it is using `kdesu`.
Message as below.
`org.kde.kdesu: Daemon not safe (not sgid), not using it.`. Inspite of 'Daemon
not safe...' error, the software sources launches and able to make changes.

Title:
"Software Sources" fails to launch from Discover when tried to launch
from applications list (kf.kio.gui: "Could not find the program 'lxqt-
  sudo'")

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Release: Kubuntu Groovy (also affects focal, hirsute)
SW, version: software-properties-qt, 0.99.3.1 (for groovy but also affects
version on focal)

  How to reproduce:
  1) Launch Discover.
  2) Search for (or scroll to) 'software sources', select the 'Software
Sources' from the search result.
  3) Click on 'Launch'.

  Expected:
The application launches, possibly asking for admin password.

  Actual:
Does not launch (on groovy). On focal, launches with error (Snapshot
attached). However, if we try to access software sources from 'Settings', it
launches properly.

When launched from terminal, it was seen that discover was trying to use
`lxqt-sudo` and failing since it was not installed. Error message as below.
`kf.kio.gui: "Could not find the program 'lxqt-sudo'"`

Whereas when we access 'Software Sources' from 'Settings', it is using
`kdesu`. Message as below.
`org.kde.kdesu: Daemon not safe (not sgid), not using it.`. Inspite of
'Daemon not safe...' error, the software sources launches and able to make
changes.

2021-04-06 Thread Sai Vinoba
@hellsworth, I'm attaching a screencast that shows the issue.

The current screencast is from 'quickemu+default install'. But also
observed under 'virt-manager+zfs install'.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1922772] [NEW] Application window looses focus when launched from search but not when launched from app grid

2021-04-06 Thread Sai Vinoba
Public bug reported:

Release: Ubuntu 21.04 (20210406 iso image)

Software, version: gnome-shell, 3.38.4-1ubuntu1

How to reproduce:
1) Boot up Ubuntu 21.04 image (live session or installed)
2) Once inside shell, go to overview (either using Super key or clicking on
Activities)
3) Search for any application (eg., terminal) and launch it.

Expected:
The application launches normally and usable.

Actual:
The application launches but the window looses focus. When the application is
launching, the desktop icons disappear for few seconds and reappear. When they
reappear the launched application window will not have focus.

If we launch the application from the app grid (without searching first)
or from the dock, the window retains the focus.

Tested on VM (quickemu and virt-manager).
