[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1417651] Re: Lenovo W520: display for one screen stretched over both when docked

2015-02-20 Thread Rockwalrus
Still broken in 346.35. Doesn't get detected at all in 304.125.
Strangely, after I purged 304.125, the monitor connected to the dock
started working in nouveau. I'm guessing there is a difference in
Xorg.conf that caused that.

** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => New

** Tags added: apport-collected possible-manual-nvidia-install

** Description changed:

When using the proprietary Nvidia drivers 331.113, the output from one
window is often stretched to cover both by Unity. One thing that I
noticed is that the standard xrandr-based Displays panel in System
Settings shows both outputs, but nvidia-settings shows only the external
  monitor.

  WORKAROUND: Use another window manager.

WORKAROUND: In Unity, manually configure the display output locations
  and sizes in ccsm.

Title:
Lenovo W520: display for one screen stretched over both when docked

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
When using the proprietary Nvidia drivers 331.113, the output from one
window is often stretched to cover both by Unity. One thing that I
noticed is that the standard xrandr-based Displays panel in System
Settings shows both outputs, but nvidia-settings shows only the
  external monitor.

  WORKAROUND: Use another window manager.

WORKAROUND: In Unity, manually configure the display output locations
  and sizes in ccsm.

Title:
Lenovo W520: display for one screen stretched over both when docked

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-331 package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
When using the proprietary Nvidia drivers 331.113 or 346.35 the output
from one window is often stretched to cover both by Unity. The
standard xrandr-based Displays panel in System Settings shows both
outputs, but nvidia-settings shows only the external monitor. 304.125
  doesn't detect the monitor.

  WORKAROUND: Use another window manager.

WORKAROUND: In Unity, manually configure the display output locations
  and sizes in ccsm.

  WORKAROUND: Use nouveau.

Desktop/windows painted incorrectly in dual monitor configuration

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
My setup: Dell M4600 laptop with Dell U3011 2560x1600 monitor attached
  to DisplayPort.

I was using Nvidia 331.38 prioprietary driver for quite a long time
with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and everything worked perfectly. Today I
upgraded to Ubuntu 14.10, which comes with Nvidia 331.89 and observed
  the following problem:

  1. When I boot up the computer with the monitor connected, the login
screen looks fine. Both displays get detected properly and resolutions
are ok (1920x1080 on the builtin laptop display and 2560x1600 on
U3011) and screen contents scaled properly.

  2. Then I log into my account, for 3 seconds U3011 displays some
rubbish (but it was always like that) and when it finally logs in, it
displays everything stretched horizontally through both my screens. It
looks as if it tried to paint the contents of a single display on two
of them, by stretching the content horizontally, so everything (icons,
windows, wallpaper) has wrong aspect-ratio. Funny, the top status bar
seem to render correctly and the resolution/size of the top menu is
correct. Physical resolution of both screens is ok. I'll attach a
photo, because it is hard to describe how it looks.

  3. I cannot use system in this state - mouse click position seems to
not be synchronized with what's on the display - e.g. I can start
applications, but then they don't react to mouseclicks.

However: booting up without the second display connected, logging in
and *then* connecting the second display works fine.

If I boot up with connected monitor and log in (desktop distorted),
disconnecting and connecting monitor does *not* help. After disconnecting the
U3011, the builtin display is painted ok, but after connecting, it returns back
to the incorrect state and both are rendered incorrectly.
The only thing that helps recovering from this state seems to be
disconnecting the second monitor, reboot, logging in and then connecting.

Suspending to memory and waking up does not change the layout of the
screen (neither fixes the "broken" one nor destroys the "good" one).

Using a Guest session instead of my account does not fix my problem (I
was hoping this was something screwed up in my .config).

Switching to a Guest user account while I'm using both monitors in the
good layout creates a session with a broken layout. Then logging out
from Guest and switching back to my original session restores the good
layout. The good layout seems to not be forgotten until I finish the
session and logout. The bad layout is "created" whenever I start a new
session with both monitors plugged in.

BTW: I'm using a docking station - not sure if it is related - if you
think it might be, I can try with connecting the monitor directly.

I tried deleting ~/.compiz and ~/.config/compiz-1 directories but the problem
remains.
I also tried to go into the Displays configuration when everything is ok,
apply the settings there (without any changes) in hope it will persist them
somehow, but after restart it is broken again.

I also tried reinstalling nvidia 331.89 drivers, because it complained
about not being able to install nvidia-uvm during the upgrade process
(reported separately), and now all nvidia packages installed cleanly.
Before that I also got rid of all the ppa mainline kernels I had, just
in case they mess something up.

I remember the same problem happened on Ubuntu 14.04 when I tried to
upgrade nvidia from ppa/xorg-edgers to 331.89, but then the easy
workaround was to downgrade back to official 331.38. Now I have no
  choice :(

Some other observations that may or may not be related to the problem,
but I disclose them anyway, maybe they are helpful:

  * Notifications (e.g. network connection) displayed on the login
screen in dual screen mode seem to be misplaced and instead of being
painted in the upper right corner of one of the displays they get
painted in some hard to logically explain position - neither at the
  center, nor in any corner.

  * The splash screen of IntelliJ IDEA (this is using Java / AWT
probably) is also rendered in a strange position - below the center of
the laptop screen, moved to the right (but not touching the edge),
instead of exact center as it should be.

  * GMail notification just displayed at the moment when I'm writing it
exactly at the left-lower corner of the bigger screen (U3011).

  * Nvidia settings lists only U3011 in the list of the devices
  (attached screenshot).

  * Ubunt

If I switch WM to sawfish, this problem goes away. Switching back to
Unity makes it come back.

10de:0dda [Lenovo ThinkPad W520] Desktop is distorted after update to
  331.113

Status in Nvidia Feature Request and Bug Reporting:

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-331-updates package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
After upgrading to 331.113 I have experienced distorted desktop. I
have also experienced the same problem after trying to upgrade to
14.10 and that's why I've reverted to backup of 14.04.

I is quite strange. Unity controls are ok. I.e. Dash and panel on top
look ok. But desktop itself and application windows are stretched to
multi-monitor setup. If I arrange monitors side by side, desktop and
applications are distorted horizontally. If I arrange them top to
  bottom, desktop is distorted vertically.

It is interesting, that even screenshot is taken "as is", i.e. showing
  distortion.

On my current setup I have Dash on both (or three) screens and top
panel repeating. In the screenshot with distortion, however, there's
only one Dash and top panel is not visible (only line seen) on laptop
  screen.

Mouse cursor is ok, but it is impossible to point to correct location
on desktop or application window: some "hit and miss" involved.

I am using Nvidia Optimus with nvidia-prime and lightdm for dual or
three monitor setup (with docking station), laptop screen running on
  Intel card.

I suppose this might be simply old configuration files or some package
version, that is not compatible with 331.113. I've reverted to 331.38
and everything's ok. Note, that upgrading to 14.10 had exactly the
  same effect.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1417651] [NEW] Lenovo W520: display for one screen stretched over both when docked

2015-02-03 Thread Rockwalrus
Public bug reported:

When using the proprietary Nvidia drivers, the output from one window is
often stretched to cover both by Unity. Other window managers don't
have this problem, and if you manually configure the display output
locations and sizes in ccsm, Unity displays it correctly. One thing
that I noticed is that the standard xrandr-based Displays panel in
System Settings shows both outputs, but nvidia-settings shows only the
external monitor.

2015-02-06 Thread Rockwalrus
The external monitor connected to the dock doesn't get detected by
nouveau at all, so it doesn't occur in this form. This problem occurred
in Trusty as well. Before that I was using a different configuration,
so I don't know if it would have occurred. It looks like 331.113 is the
latest version available.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1019273] Re: Version Bump to 4.3

2013-10-17 Thread Rockwalrus
Oracle Java is so similar to OpenJDK that it's doubtful there would be
any serious hurdles. Besides, Eclipse4.3 is tested on OpenJDK 7 ( see
http://www.eclipse.org/eclipse/development/readme_eclipse_4.3.html#TargetOperatingEnvironments
), so it shouldn't be an issue.

The real problem is that Eclipse has a ridiculously complicated build
and deployment system that is painful to adapt to Ubuntu, and while
there are some provisions for shared-user deployments with a Unixy
filesystem layout, in reality upstream never tests them and they don't
work very well.

  See this http://i.imgur.com/ubVvr53.png

As you can see, rxvt there is the only application with normal fonts.
The Terminal application from Xfce suite is for some inexplicable

how in the Choose Terminal Font dialog the Courier New font Preview is

system. I opened the attached ics file manually and clicked through to import
it into my google-calendar. Then it crashed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 849581] Re: [regression] no option to send reply for accepted calendar invites

Still present in 3.2.1-0ubuntu1.

** Changed in: evolution (Ubuntu)

Title:
[regression] no option to send reply for accepted calendar invites

Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Email calendar invites do not present an option to reply to the sender
upon acceptance (or other selection) and evolution sends nothing back
  to the sender.

In Natty (2.32) and earlier the email responses with subject
"Accepted: xxx" could be seen in the sent box. Perhaps the
correlation between the outbound email account (imapx) and the inbound
google calendar account is not being made? In this case the email is
not gmail (Verio qmail IMAP+) and a matching Google Calendar account
  (username matching email).

Senders are unaware of acceptance as a result, defeating the purpose
  of the calendar invite.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 828623] Re: [Regression] gnome control centre does not allow you to disable the laptop screen while leaving an external DisplayPort connected screen working

2011-11-03 Thread Rockwalrus
I was able to fix these symptoms by going into dconf and enabling the
xrandr plugin for gnome-settings-daemon, which for some reason had lots
of plugins get disabled after upgrading to oneiric.

Lenovo T500 with displayport has a 1920x1200 monitor attached, I use
the displayport in a similar way to a docking station in that I attach

able to switch off the laptops internal display, only leaving the
  external monitor working.

Screen detection works fine, mirrored screen works fine, but disabling
the internal display and activating the external display just leads to
the screen going black until the timeout has been reached, whereupon
it reverts to its previous setting.

This is a fully updated oneiric install

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 773896] Re: Evolution does not show persistent alarms in Unity

2011-12-12 Thread Rockwalrus
As this makes evolution alarms almost useless, and caused me to miss an
appointment which cost me money, "low" seems like the wrong priority.

Title:
Evolution does not show persistent alarms in Unity

Status in “evolution” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: evolution

In 10.10 and before, Evolution alarms would appear in the system tray. With
Unity, there is no persistent trace of alarms associated with calendar events
after the notification bubble has disappeared.
I think this is a regression: I trusted this function to remind me of
important appointments, but unless I am in front of my screen at the
appropriate moment (when the notification bubble appears) I am not made aware
of these appointments.

The workaround is to whitelist evolution-alarm-notify. But presumably there
needs to be a solution that integrates better with Unity, perhaps a message in
the message indicator and the icon turning blue, or the date-time glowing blue
and appointment flashing under the date-time menu?
