  indicator-datetime-session severely leaks memory

Status in The Date and Time Indicator:
  Invalid
Status in “geoclue” package in Ubuntu:

Status in “indicator-datetime” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
After the most recent update to 0.3.91-0ubuntu1, indicator-datetime-session's
memory increases at a rate of ~5MB/s, rendering my system unusable in a couple
of minutes. Any advice on how to debug this issue? The service is always
respawned after I kill it, making it impossible to directly run it in a
terminal -- is there a way to prevent that? The issue persists even if I switch
off the date display in the indicator bar. If I do an strace to the running
process, the following seems to be repeated in an infinite loop:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1075996] Re: Elantech 'ETPS/2' Clickpad on 'Asus Zenbook ux31a': unable to move cursor while thumb is resting on the left button

2012-11-19 Thread Dave Vree
Running an Asus K55a here with the same Elan clickpad. For me, right
click and some other things where broken until I put the following into
the (new) xorg.conf file. Now everthing works except this issue.

Section "InputClass"
Identifier "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad"
MatchProduct "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad"
MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "TapButton1" "1"
Option "TapButton2" "3"
Option "TapButton3" "2"
Option "VertTwoFingerScroll" "1"
Option "HorizTwoFingerScroll" "1"
Option "CoastingSpeed" "10"
Option "EdgeMotionMinZ" "30"
Option "EdgeMotionMaxZ" "40"
Option "EdgeMotionMinSpeed" "100"
Option "EdgeMotionMaxSpeed" "400"
Option "FingerLow" "9"
Option "FingerHigh" "12"
Option "EmulateMidButtonTime" "0"
Option "ClickPad" "True"
Option "SoftButtonAreas" "50% 0 82% 0 0 0 0 0"
EndSection

I think what is needed is to set the property "AreaBottomEdge" to some value so
that the lower portion of the touchpad surface is disabled with regard to mouse
pointer movement.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1124328] Re: *ERROR* failed to set mode on [CRTC:7]

2013-04-05 Thread Dave Vree
There is a workaround for this issue which is to leave one of the
monitors unplugged until after login. It's lame, but it will allow one
to boot and then work within a multi-monitor setup. I get this error
with Intel Video 4000 when driving two monitors via HDMI and VGA
simultaneously.

I am using a Thinkpad T430s docked with DVI monitor and VGA monitor (a
common configuration I would imagine). I read that there is a hardware
limitation for supporting LVDS+DVI+VGA concurrently, but since the
laptop is docked (and screen closed) I don't believe this explains the

2013-04-06 Thread Dave Vree
+1 for this issue. For me it happens on Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 with
Thunderbird 17.x. Essentially, all pop-up dialogs happen on monitor 1
when Thunderbird is running on monitor 2. Other programs do not have
this problem.

Bug description:
When running nautilus and doing a file transfer that brings up the file
operations window, I noticed that the window doesn't appear in the Alt+Tab
grouping for nautilus, and does not appear in the gnome-shell Windows activity
or even in the thumbnail for the workspace that the window resides in. This
makes it very difficult to find when there are many windows in the current
workspace, which is usually the case in my workflow.

  test case:
  1. install the new version (1:3.2.1-0ubuntu4) from -proposed
  2. run gnome-shell
2.1 make a copy
-> you should see the copy dialog in the pager
  3. run unity
3.1 make a copy
3.2 close all your nautilus windows
3.3 click on the nautilus icon in the launcher -> it should enable you to
launch a new nautilus window

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 890396] [NEW] Vinagre only gives 800x600 RDC resolution

2011-11-14 Thread Dave Vree

The default remote desktop application in Ubuntu 11.10 does not provide
an option to set the resolution of the remote desktop. It defaults to

A workaround is to use the remmina application instead.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1026414] [NEW] Rhythmbox consistently fails on new installs trying to scan large home directory

2012-07-18 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

I have a home directly with a lot of files (about 100GB...maybe 500,000
files) -- mostly for software development purposes.

Everytime I do a fresh install of 12.04 (x64) I have a problem with
Rhythmbox whereby when I first run it, it hangs for about 5 seconds
every 3 seconds. Then after about 1 minute it totally freezes.
Rhythmbox reports about 3000 import errors regarding misc files in my
home directory (that aren't even song files). I am unable to import any
songs from my library (about 5,000 songs).

My workaround is to use dconf-editor to remove my home directory from
rythmdb/locations (leaving ubuntuOne alone). I also have to delete the
~/.local/share/applications/rhythmbox directory as well.

After that it starts normally and I can import my library and it works
great from then on. I feel that this is a pretty serious issue that
Ubuntu's default music player hangs and freezes on a brand new
installation...before a user even gets a change to change any settings!

One workaround I found for this is to use HUD to access menu items. Tap

Running thunderbird with the Firetray plugin. Clicking the close button in
thunderbird does not kill thunderbird but sends it to the background, but Unity
thinks the app is closed (the little arrow(s) don't show anymore).
When opening again from Unity, it recognized the app as running, but the
menus (File, Edit, etc) fail to show in the top bar when the mouse is brought
up there. The only way to get it back is to kill thunderbird and restart it.

Disabling the firetray plugin, which doesn't work with Unity anyway,
fixes this problem. However, it would be great to have a tray icon by

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 971558] [NEW] Rhythmbox unable to play while importing music

2012-04-02 Thread Dave Vree
Public bug reported:

I have a 4,500 song music library served from an Ubuntu Samba server.
It takes about 5-10 minutes during the intial import. During this time,
Rhythmbox cannot play anything.

It presents itself like it is ready to play some of the songs once
imported, but what you hear is 2-3 seconds of audio, followed by 2-5
seconds of crackly, popping audio, followed by silence. The timebar
continues to progress on the currently playing song, but there is no
sound.

I was able to replicate this on my system 3 times.

The net result is that I thought I had audio problems with my system. I
am sure that this would really throw off a new user of Ubuntu.

Running 12.04 32bit beta 2.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 968268] Re: Cannot permanently add wallpaper to 'Pictures Folder'

2012-04-25 Thread Dave Vree
Running 12.04 with the new Unity Greeter that shows your wallpaper on
the login screen.

Something else to think about with all this is that if the "Pictures
Folder" really means ~/Pictures then when you have an encrypted home
directory, these pictures will not appear at the login screen.
Likewise if adding a picture means adding a pointer to it under the
.cache directory it will also not appear on the login screen.

Ideally, there should be a way, even if it requires sudo priviledges to
add wallpapers to /usr/share/backgrounds. If you this is a separate
issue, let me know and I'll open a new issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 905686] Re: nautilus assert failure: nautilus: ../../src/xcb_io.c:528: _XAllocID: Assertion `ret != inval_id' failed.

Rants should be delivered over in the forums...comments here should only
be about resolving this issue. Given the lack of information about your
myriad issue(s) I don't see how anyone can help you...and I suspect you
should not be beta-testing a pre-release version of Ubuntu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 890396] Re: Vinagre only gives 800x600 RDC resolution

2012-04-05 Thread Dave Vree
Looks like the default app in 12.04 is Remmina, which doesn't have this
problem. If Ubuntu isn't going to use Vinagre as the default anymore
then perhaps this issue should just changed to "Won't Fix" or "Fix
Released" depending on your perspective

The default remote desktop application in Ubuntu 11.10 does not
provide an option to set the resolution of the remote desktop. It
defaults to 800x600 and cannot be changed, thus rendering the
application unusable. A workaround is to use the remmina application
  instead.

Bug description:
  indicator-messages got updated, introducing a new libmessaging-menu
api (deprecating the old libindicate library) which should make
  application developper's life easier.

The indicator work is done and the library is ready and we started
  porting applications

The current stack is being tested in https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
  desktop/+archive/ppa/

  It includes
  - indicator-messages
  - gwibber
  - indicator-telepathy
  - thunderbird (soon, work is being finished)

which is what we consider the minimal set for landing the feature

for quantal we will add those soon:
  - pidgin
  - xchat-indicator
  - evolution-indicator
