[Bug 48409] Dictionary; some problem with data conversion

2006-06-04 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 6.06 i386 desktop; Dictionary 2.14.0
Applications/Accessories/Dictionary

When I try to search word "moses" I get this error:

Error while looking up definition
Error while reading reply from server:
Invalid byte sequence in conversion input

After this error, Dictionary doesn't work anymore (it cannot find
anything). I have to restart it.

I guess that this is more general problem, not only one word.

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'gdict'; however,
that package was not published in Ubuntu.

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Ubuntu 6.06, i386: Rhytmbox 0.9.3.1 doesn't delete album that was played

[Bug 58141] Evince cannot display ps file

2006-08-29 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

Ubuntu 6.06.1, Evince 0.5.2

I tried to open postscript (.ps) file in Ubuntu 6.06. Evince 0.5.2 was
started but it displayed only "Loading". For long time. No error.

I found that postscript compiler (like gs-gpl) was not instaled on my
system. After installing postscript interpreter, Evince worked fine.

I report this as a bug as there was no error message from Evince that it
miss postscript support that is needed to open the file.

Observed on this package:
http://www.terryburton.co.uk/barcodewriter/files/postscriptbarcode.tgz

This is a gz archive, that has several ps files inside; it could be open
with archiver (Fle Roller 2.14.4) and after that you can start Evince by
selecting some ps file from this archive.

On the other side, I can open this file with the same Evince without any
problem:

[Bug 48409] Re: [Bug 48409] Re: Dictionary; some problem with data conversion

2006-08-30 Thread psl
Sebastian,

I understand that source of the problem is at server side, it sends data those
are not in UTF encoding. This is first part of issue. Dictionary could add
support for other encodings; This is probably not easy.

The second part is why Dictionary is "demaged" by such data. It should survive
unexpected data attack, it could possibly print an error message like "sorry,
I cannot display this garbage as I don't understand this format". This is easy
from my point of view.

Petr

[Bug 58141] Re: [Bug 58141] Re: Evince cannot display ps file

2006-08-30 Thread psl
Sebastien,

I tried it on two different PCs. I installed on one of them gs-gpl and after
that I was able to see ps document.

I report this as I miss error message in Evince that something is wrong.
Without message it is difficult for unexperienced user to fix it (like
instaling some missing gs package). I reported the bug as I am not happy that
Evince only prints "Loading...".

I don't know what is real problem; it could be mising dependency, or maybe
that my sample postrcript file was corrupted/incorrect. I am not expert on
this, developers should understand what is real issue and what is the best
workarround/fix.

>From the point of desktop user I miss information from Evince that something
is wrong and document cannot be presented.

Thanks for your help,
Petr

[Bug 58141] Re: [Bug 58141] Re: Evince cannot display ps file

2006-08-30 Thread psl
Sebastien,

try to display barcodewriter.ps document. I guess that your error example is
from sample.ps.

I am not sure how postrcript works but you can get valid document when you
merge barcode.ps and sample.ps; sample.ps uses some definitions from
barcode.ps.

I got the same error as you when I tried ps2pdf on sample.ps. After merge
barcode.ps with sample.ps to the new document, ps2pdf generated pdf for me.

ps2pdf barcodewriter.ps works fine, it is valid postsrcipt file.

Try to display barcodewriter.ps in Evince. Try to remove gs interpreter from
your test PC and try again. After that try to display simple postscript
sample.

With regards,
Petr

[Bug 58141] Re: Evince cannot display ps file

2006-08-30 Thread psl
Maybe that I was wrong and I my analyse was not correct. Problem is not
missing gs-gpl package.

Try this from command line:

1) echo "This is just a evince bug demonstartion" >test.pdf
2) evince test.ps
3) you will see only "loading..." forever, no error message that test.ps is not
correct postscript file.

You can see some error message in command line but user that has no
knowladge about command line and he only use mouse to open files will
never see such message. And it is clear that evince ignores message from
postscript interpreter. Evince is not user friendly software...

Sorry, the first step should be:

1) echo "This is just a evince bug demonstartion" >test.ps

But you cant try thesame with pdf file; you will get error message in
that case.

[Bug 379944] [NEW] User administration, groups are not sortable; users-admin

2009-05-24 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-system-tools

Ubuntu 9.04, i686;

1) GNOME tool to administer users in easy way, with GUI. I miss an
option to sort groups in alphanumeric order. Groups are listed based on
ID that it is not visible in the list. I would like to have an option to
sort available groups based on ID or NAME. I talk about Manage "GROUP
Window"

2) Until I don't unlock User management, I cannot see group details, all
group names are printed in gray and I cannot open properties. As I can
open file /etc/groups, I don't see any reason why to block this feature
in lock mode.

3) I wish have to have an option to see in user detail groups he is
member of. I see some list of predefined groups (User privileges) there
but user can be added to other group in Manage group" window and this is
hidden here.

[Bug 463685] Re: FM801 sound chips doesn't play nice songs

2010-03-27 Thread psl
Retested in Ubuntu 10.04 i386 beta. HW is still broken. Audio buffers
are played in random order or lost; difficult to say.I hear sound but it
is strange.

Song of length 2:53 played in 1:28, this points to the buffer lost. I
cannot hear shift in frequency.

[Bug 463685] Re: FM801 sound chips doesn't play nice songs

2010-03-28 Thread psl
I created several audio files:

2646710 2010-03-27 22:05 test26.wav
2616876 2010-03-27 22:15 test26_u1004.wav
3885100 2010-03-28 20:20 test26_u0910.wav
5648428 2010-03-27 22:28 test26_u0804.wav
5685324 2010-03-28 18:29 test26_vl060.wav
5546060 2010-03-28 18:36 test26_win_hp.wav
5967948 2010-03-28 19:44 test26_win2k.wav

test26.wav is audio file created in Audacity; it has length 30s and contains
silence, sine 440Hz and chirp from 220Hz to 8800Hz.
I played this file in several OS and recorded audio at different PC. u0804,
u0910 and u1004 are U10.04 (OK) U09.10 (very bad) and U10.04 (bad), win2k is
sound played under Win2k. vl060 is Vector Linux 6.0. win_hp is played under
windows but different HW with different sound card; only for a reference.
U8.04 plays the best sound, even better than W2k (difference is visible in
audio analyser, like Audacity). Sample from U10.04 clearly demonstrates that
some buffers are lost.

[Bug 728794] [NEW] totem cannot play video; BadValue

2011-03-03 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu 10.10, i386
totem 2.32.0-0ubuntu1

I report this bug under Totem package but I don't think it is in Totem.
I don't know where the problem is; it could be X-server issue.

When I reboot my PC, video works fine, I can play it in Totem, VLC, etc.
But after several videos, something gous wrong and I cannot play videos
anymore. I have to restart GNOME session or reboot my PC. When I have
problem, Totem doesn't work, VLC doesn't work, etc. I think that mplayer
works.

I think this problem was not in Ubuntu 6.06 but it was in U10.04 and it
is still in U10.10.

When I have a problem and I run totem from command line, I see this
error:

$ totem *avi
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 137 error_code 2 request_code 133 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

[Bug 778815] [NEW] ATI Radeon 9600 (RV350) at notebook HP NC6000 doesn't work well.

2011-05-06 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Ubuntu 11.04, i386. Notebook HP NC6000 with ATI Radeon 9600 (32MB video
ram). Internal laptop LCD 1400x1050.

3D video mode doesn't work well. It is not repeatable but in most cases
I see a display corruption when I run Unity or accelerated Classic
Desktop. Classic Desktop without acceleration is perfect. When I try to
run Unity, in most cases I see pattern that is not OK (like part of
pixels is missing or have wrong color). For some reason, sometimes even
Unity is started with display, that is OK. It is not repeatable, even
corruption pattern is different (I noticed several different patterns).

ChipID is 0x4e50, ATI Radeon Mobility 9600/9700 (M10/M11) AGP

[Bug 783765] [NEW] GNOME-panel, calendar; wrong date after midnight

2011-05-16 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Ubuntu 11.04, i386. GNOME2, gnome-panel, calendar

There is a time on my GNOME panel toolbar, in the corner. When I click
on the time, calendar is displayed. So far, so good.

I see a problem after midnight. When I click the clock, and it is 17 May
(after Midnight), 16 May is highlighted in the calendar. When I close
the calendar and click time again, correct day is highlighted. This
issue is repeatable. The first action on the calendar shows wrong date
(previous day, etc). Calendar state is updated on the exit. I wrote that
problem is after midnight but it is more general; it is the first click
of the day (when computer was not rebooted since previous day).

[Bug 825158] [NEW] Cannot Blank or burn to CDRW disk with SuperGrub2

2011-08-12 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 11.04, i386
brasero 2.32.1-0ubuntu2

My CDRW device:
scsi 1:0:0:0: CD-ROMHL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH22NS30 2.00 PQ: 0 ANSI: 5

I needed to fix my Linux box that cannot boot so I burned Supergrub2 to my
pocket CDRW disk. No problem. I fixed my PC with Supergrub2 disk.
http://download.berlios.de/supergrub/super_grub_disk_hybrid-1.98s1.iso

I wanted to burn PartedMagic 6.6 to my pocket CDRW disk. I did this many
times before but it was not working this time, I received message that
there is no usable disk in my CDRW burner. I expected message that Disk
has to be blanked before it can be used. It looked like my system is
broken and cannot burn CDRW anymore.

I blanked my CDRW disk with wodim and it fixed the problem:
# wodim dev=/dev/scd0 blank=fast

Once the disk was blanked, it works as expected. I guess that SuperGrub2
disk triggers some bug in Brasero. All blank/burn was done on the same
PC (Ubuntu 11.04) with the same disk and drive.

Steps to repeat the issue:
1) download and burn SuperGrub2 ISO disk to your CDRW disk.
http://download.berlios.de/supergrub/super_grub_disk_hybrid-1.98s1.iso
2) try to burn (or blank) other ISO image to your CDRW disk with SuperGrub2
(use Braseiro or Gnome file manager)

Details about my CDRW drive and CDRW disk:

[Bug 53962] Re: Nautilus-cd-burner is unable to blank DVD-RW

2008-09-20 Thread psl
Ubuntu 8.04.1, i386, Nautilus 2.22.3

I can reproduce the issue. When I try to write an ISO image to a DVD+RW
or DVD-RW and the rewritable disk s not empty, I am informed that disk
has to be erased. When I press ERASE button, I get an error after a
while that disk cannot be erased. and that is correct, DVD-RW disk has
to be formatted...

Nautilus should run format (not erase) for DVD rewritable disks. Or it
should offer a FORMAT button for DVD-RW and DVD+RW disks.

As a workaround, I run GnomeBaker and format a disk manually from Tools
menu.

[Bug 82539] gedit doesn't close files (and blocks CDROM eject)

2007-01-31 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gedit

Ubuntu 6.10, x86, gedit 2.16.1

gedit doesn't close binary files properly. I tried to open (drag and
drop) files from mounted CDROM in gedit. gedit warned me that it cannot
detect character encoding, it offered some character sets. I selected
CANCEL. Latter I found that file is still open in gedit when I was
unable to umount CDROM. I used gedit to check files on CDROM, I was
looking for some text files to read, I was not interested in binary
files.

$ lsof /dev/cdrw
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE NODE NAME
gedit 29196 oem 16r REG 22,64 10648 1871 /media/cdrom1/isolinux.bin
gedit 29196 oem 17r REG 22,64 2048 1863 /media/cdrom1/boot.cat
gedit 29196 oem 18r REG 22,64 10648 1871 /media/cdrom1/isolinux.bin

$ ps aux | grep 29196 | grep -v grep
oem 29196 0.1 1.5 66404 23696 ?S20:20 0:04 gedit

Steps to replicate:
1) open some regular text in gedit; this step is needed to have gedit copy up
and running
2) put CDROM with some Linux to your CDROM
3) Ubuntu should mount CDROM
4) start new copy of gedit from menu, we will use this new gedit for our demo
5) open CDROM folder and 'drag and drop' some binary file to gedit
6) gedit should display message that it "cannot detect character encoding"
7) select CANCEL
8) I expect that gedit will release binary file after CANCEL but it seems that
file is still open. Test with lsof tool.

[Bug 65859] drivemount_appl is memory hungry

2006-10-30 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

I noticed that drivemount_appl is memory hungry, I list my evidence
(108m in top list). My Ubuntu runs for several days now and I connected
several USB drives to it and changed several CDROM disks in my drive. As
my swap is full I was looking for my memory and noticed that

[Bug 92460] GNOME disk mounter shows ugly characters (no disk name?)

2007-03-15 Thread psl
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-volume-manager

Ubuntu 6.06.1, i386
gnome-volume-manager 1.5.15-0ubuntu10

I put an USB key to my Ubuntu desktop. USB disk was mounted and it works
fine:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ mount | grep sda
/dev/sda1 on /media/usbdisk type vfat
(rw,nosuid,nodev,quiet,shortname=mixed,uid=2,gid=2,umask=077,iocharset=utf8)

But when I left mouse pointer over icon with mounted USB disk that is
placed at panel, I see "ugly" characters and "(mounted)" is on next
line. Maybe taht my USB key has no disk name and ugly characters are
nonsense name (pointer problem?). Other mounted disk show in the same
dialog names like "Floppy Drive (not mounted)", "CD-ROM 1 (not mounted)"
and "9.3 GB volume (mounted)"

I tried to create a screenshot of the situation but I cannot capture
dialog with ugly name to my screenshot, it is hiden when I press

[Bug 54758] Ubuntu 6.06 Disk Manager cannot handle mount points with spaces

2007-03-22 Thread psl
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

My USB stick has volume name "USB DISK", it is default name created by
manufacturer. When I plug this stick tu Ubuntu 6.06 box, pmount
automounts it to directory "/media/USB DISK"; notice space in mount
point.

Disk Manager (GNOME menu System/Administration/Disks) cannot handle
space in filename, as when I select USB disk, it lists "Access path:
/media/USB". When you press "Browse" button, it shows empty folder, as
it opens file manager for "/media/USB", not "/media/USB DISK".

It was originaly bug #54536 against pmount but feedback from software
engineers is this is not a bug to use spaces, it is feature and all
applications that cannot handle such spaces have to be fixed and bug
agains such applications have to be created.

BTW, is there a simple way in Ubuntu Linux to rename USB disk volume
name without reformating disk (vfat file system)?
