[Bug 44514] Re: shutdown button does not shutdown but log out
Same problem also appeared after update on friday. Also hitting restart takes me to the splash screen but pc then hangs. 'sudo shutdown -h now' will shut the machine down. One thread (/ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=175384) said to install gnome power manager. But synaptic tells me it was unable to find this. So I havent been able to test this. [Bug 377504] [NEW] file-roller password-protecting UI confusing
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: file-roller When you create a password-protected archive in file-roller, only those files that were added AFTER entering the password will actually be encrypted. [Bug 649912] [NEW] SD Card Reader shows Incomplete / Corrupt Files
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus 10.10 Beta Nautilus 2.32.0 HP 6700 Series Laptop with built-in SD (and multi-) card reader. SD card reader displays incomplete or corrupted files. Different error messages occur - 'could not open file' or 'type not supported' 'could not display' etc. Some correctly displayed files also yield these messages. Ejecting the card usually results in Nautilus closing/crashing. In some cases browsing the file structure or attempting to open some files also crashes Nautilus. [Bug 656210] [NEW] HP Laptop Remote Control does not Shutdown / Turn OFF computer..
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-session Ubuntu 10.10 Beta gnome-session ?? HP dv6720 Laptop These series of laptops have a small remote control nicely tucked away in the PCMCIA slot. The Linux functionality is quite good considering it's based on a Windows/HP entertainment setup with Windows button and DVD quick launch etc. Volume, next song, moving up/down on screen etc all work. Pressing the Power button on the remote control does not Shutdown / Power OFF the computer, rather it just suspends the session. The problem was the same on previous releases like 10.04 and 9.10. It could be related to earlier reported problems where for example laptops were performing the wrong action from the choice of (shutdown, hibernate or end session, blank screen) when the lid was closed. I seem to recall trying to setup the laptop with a 'shutdown on screen closure' but it would always result in 'suspend session' instead, similar to the action of the remote control in this bug. [Bug 657303] [NEW] gnome-about-me changing password doesn't work proper (encrypted home)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-control-center Hi, I installed two days ago the desktop computer of my father with Ubuntu 10.10. I enabled the encrypted home directory and set a dummy password. After that my father starts to use his brand new computer. One of the first things he did was changing his password, doing this trough System->Preferences->About me. But starting the next day, the decryption of his home directory failed. After I bring back the password to the dummy password every thing works well. Thanks for reading, I hope you can help. [Bug 1949966] [NEW] sshfs randomly corrupts files
Public bug reported: /usr/bin/sshfs the way it is packaged now is broken, tested on 20.04 focal and 21.10 impish. This issue is not present on Debian Sid or Arch Linux. The way the issue shows is that majority of the time, a 40MB .zip file I download from an SFTP server is broken. The stat is identical, filesize is identical to the byte, but the inside is a garbled mess that refuses to unzip anymore. Tested via (and almost always getting a random checksum): md5sum /mnt/file.zip && umount /mnt/sftp && mount /mnt/sftp && md5sum /mnt/file.zip I used a definition in fstab but also manually mounted via 'sshfs -o allow_other,default_permissions' This is not a kernel issue, this is not a network issue, I have tested in containers and across servers. Unfortunately, I do not have administrative access to the server I am testing against, so this is the only idea I have about it: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version CrushFTPSSHD The workaround is to replace the /usr/bin/sshfs binary(and adding an accompanying libfuse3.so to the correct path) from Arch Linux. This should be an sshfs issue, not a libfuse issue, as copying libfuse2 from Arch does not make the issue disappear. ** Affects: sshfs-fuse (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to sshfs-fuse in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1949966 Title: sshfs randomly corrupts files To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sshfs-fuse/+bug/1949966/+subscriptions -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 1922034] [NEW] Resizing gnome-terminal moves the window
Public bug reported: When slowly resizing a gnome-terminal window from either the top edge or the left edge, the window is moved. The top/left edge moves with the cursor, but the bottom/right edge doesn't stay in place. I assume this is because of how gnome-terminal can only be resized one line/column at a time. I assume resizing the window from the top or left edge works by moving the window up or to the left and expanding the width to make the bottom or right edge stay in place, and something about this logic has changed in a recent gnome-shell update to make it not account for windows which can't be resized pixel by pixel. Attached is a video which shows the bug in action. [Bug 1922047] [NEW] Touchpad scrolling is 1.5x faster on Wayland than on X11
Public bug reported: This is an issue which has troubled me for a while. Anecdotally, scrolling feels way too fast in GNOME on Wayland compared to on X11. I finally tested it semi-scientifically, and it seems like GNOME on Wayland scrolls almost exactly 1.5x faster than GNOME on X11. I tested this by testing how many lines are scrolled from a full two- finger touchpad swipe from the bottom of my touchpad to the top of my touchpad, and logged a few attempts in both X and Wayland. I kept track of the results in this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/17EaBM5Pgt7GdnnzcN2Vchk4kfT7IZ6i4qZ0zpVRGLhc/edit?usp=sharing I scrolled in one of my own GTK applications (https://github.com/mortie/lograt) because it lets me easily see how many lines I scrolled. Attach is a video of one full scroll on X11 and one full scroll on Wayland. This testing was performed on a Dell XPS 13 9343, but I've also used Ubuntu on a Dell XPS 9575 where GNOME Wayland scrolling also feels way too fast. I don't have other hardware to test on. [Bug 1927276] [NEW] Drag-and-drop from Nautilus causes Mutter to close Wayland connections
Public bug reported: When dragging a file from Nautilus to another window (either another Nautilus window or a GNOME Terminal window), and you hold down the alt key while dropping, Mutter closes the connection to the target application (which GDK handles by calling `_exit(1)` unconditionally). When the target application is a GNOME Terminal window, the entire GNOME Terminal Server exits, so all terminal windows close. This is likely to lead to data loss (I have personally experienced having many very important terminal windows with neovim just close because I dared to drag and drop a file into another terminal window instead of typing out the path). I made an issue upstream: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/1789, but I thought it should be in Launchpad as well. [Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.
In comment #50, I said having the proprietary drivers aren't necessary. I was wrong, but I thought it was true because I had the problem on an nvidia system without manually installing the nvidia drivers. I just learned from an episode of the Ubuntu Podcast that since Ubuntu 19.10, proprietary drivers are included with the ISO, and that they're automatically enabled when you check the "install third-party software" option during install. That's interesting, because it means that the conditions for encountering this bug are: 1. Have a system with an affected nvidia graphics card. 2. Check both "enable automatic login" and "install third-party software" during install. I don't know the stats, but I would bet most people check the third- party software box, and that lots of people want automatic login. In my opinion, this makes the issue significantly more important, because people will encounter this issue without entering "Additional Drivers" and manually enabling the proprietary drivers. Especially considering there's a simple workaround available ("nvidia- drm.modeset=1" in GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX) which doesn't affect any features, I think it would be good to get a hotfix out there before the upstream nvidia proprietary drivers are fixed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-session in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1845801 Title: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. [Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Trying to log in just takes me back to the login screen. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it.
Here's the failedlogin.txt. By the way, when turning off auto login, everything works normally; I'm greeted with the login screen when the machine boots, I type in my password, and I'm logged in successfully. It's apparently just after the first failed auto-login that subsequent logins don't work. Also, after that first failed automatic login when auto login is enabled, if I switch to a TTY, my framebuffer will sometimes be filled by a low-res gnome desktop. I assume this is related, and it makes sense that gdm would be confused if there's indeed a running gnome session for my user which doesn't work. ** Attachment added: "failedlogin.txt" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-session/+bug/1845801/+attachment/5293738/+files/failedlogin.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to mutter in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1845801 Title: [nvidia] Trying to log in just takes me back to the login screen. [Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.
It seems like Ubuntu now freezes when I try to switch to a TTY when auto-login is enabled and has failed. This also happens with systemd 242 now though, so it must be some unrelated change. I got the log though, thanks to journalctl saving logs from previous boots, and attached failedlogin2.txt. Interestingly, when booting from recovery mode, when just resuming normal boot from the recovery menu, auto login works perfectly. After that, I tried messing with grub options, and when I remove "splash" from the linux cmdline, auto login works perfectly. I assume then that this issue is related to how the GPU is initialized during early boot to show the splash screen? [Bug 1753183] Re: Not able to do quick calculation via GNOME Activities
This is still an issue in 19.10. Has there been any progress? Also, is there any explanation anywhere about why gnome-calculator is a snap and not a deb? I have to imagine fixing both this issue and the launch time issue (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome- calculator/+bug/1797734) are hard to fix and thus won't be fixed soon, and both would be solved if gnome-calculator wasn't a snap. I see quick access to a calculator as a vital feature in modern operating systems (there's a reason why Windows, iOS, macOS, upstream GNOME, etc. has it built in to their search). [Bug 1845801] Re: [nvidia] Automatic login fails and then all subsequent logins fail. Killing gnome-session-binary fixes it, or just not using automatic login.
@vanvugt: Actually, the only things necessary to trigger this bug (and thus leave your computer useless) is to install Ubuntu, with auto-login enabled, and an nvidia card in your computer. The proprietary drivers aren't necessary. Considering nvidia's market share (80% according to the steam hardware survey, which will be skewed towards people with discrete GPUs, but still), I think giving this issue a priority of low is wrong. I think preventing people from bricking their systems should be given a higher priority. Maybe add a feature in the installer to detect if someone has an nvidia GPU, and prevent them to enable auto login if they do. [Bug 364121] [NEW] gnome help hangs when you click embedded HTTP link
Public bug reported: repro steps: 1. boot the jaunty live cd (note: you must not have any firefox windows open) 2. click the help icon on the gnome-panel ("white question mark inside blue circle" icon) 3. the last sentence in the first help document says "Ubuntu has an open and vibrant community of contributors. Find out how to contribute". The last part (i.e. "how to contribute") is a HTTP hyperlink, click on that link. 4. firefox opens the HTTP link 5. wait 5 seconds without doing anything 6. the gnome help viewer now becomes gray and unresponsive (if you close firefox the help viewer becomes responsible so the problem/bug here is that the gnome help viewer is making a synchronous call to open firefox... the bugfix probably is a one liner). Actually I think I have a better repro step sequence now: 1. launch gconf-editor (and make sure previously that there is at least one bookmark created) 2. select "File :: New Settings Window" 3. close the old gconf-editor window 4. select "File :: New Settings Window" in the oldest gconf-editor window to create a third gconf-editor window 5. close the oldest gconf-editor window (the second one created, leaving only the third one remaining) 6. select the bookmark in order to go to it 7. [Bug 193578] Re: Scrolling Firefox interrupts Rhythmbox audio
Easy to repro: 1. wget http://files.minimum.se/sample.ogg -O ~/Desktop/sample.ogg 2. double click sample.ogg to play it in totem 3. run "x11perf -compwinwin500" On intel G45 jaunty: After a few seconds the audio starts to skip often with >1sec pauses. On intel 965 intrepid: Music keeps playing perfect with no skips even if I run the benchmark for 30 seconds straight. It would be very useful if everyone affected by this bug posted the output of "lspci -nn | grep VGA" so we can understand if this is a regression for all graphics card or just for one brand (i.e. intel driver) or even for just one chipset. -- Scrolling Firefox interrupts Rhythmbox audio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/193578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 193578] Re: Scrolling Firefox interrupts Rhythmbox audio
I just booted 32-bit final jaunty, then I ran "sudo aptitude remove pulseaudio" and selected "log out". After 10 seconds the user "ubuntu" logs back in automatically. I started the song in totem again and then I double checked in terminal that "ps aux | grep pulse" returns nothing. Then I ran the x11perf repro I described above and boom the bug happens. I don't think it's pulseaduio, I think it's either a general kernel regression or its the new intel driver which has a kernel component to it (i915 and drm modules). Maybe one of these graphcis related kernel components floods the kernel with ultra high priority interrupts or tasklets or whatever they call it in kernel land. This way the audio requests just gets ignored. Maybe some uber kernel ninja can run sysprof or whatever tool is suited to find out why audio skips?? ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Summary changed: - Scrolling Firefox interrupts Rhythmbox audio + Basic graphics operations makes audio skip (>1 sec pauses) -- Basic graphics operations makes audio skip (>1 sec pauses) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/193578 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I should also say that when burning it brasero it looks like it's working, it takes a lot of times... it count up the megabytes (to about 10mb which I was burning) and then in the very end it fails and asks if I want to save or view the session log). + I was able to burn the same files using k3b and that program didn't show + any error. However, just now I also took one of the two failed DVDs and + put it into my other computer and it can see the files on there even + though brasero clearly said it failed? + ProblemType: Bug Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04 Package: brasero 2.26.0-0ubuntu3 ProcEnviron: LANG=en_DK.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: brasero Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic x86_64 -- failed to burn some gpg keys to DVD (less than 1mb in small files) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/370561 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to brasero in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 370561] [NEW] failed to burn some gpg keys to DVD (less than 1mb in small files)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: brasero I tried to burn some small files (gpg keys) to a DVD and it failed... then I tried to burn the same files again but this time I also added a single 8mb video file just to make it bigger. [Bug 321580] [NEW] totem play/pause tooltips appears in the top left corner of the screen
Public bug reported: 1. Boot the jaunty daily build CD image (I used the one from jan 25th). 2. Open the Examples folder on the desktop 3. Double-click the "fables_01_01_aesop.spx" file to play it in totem 4. Press the PAUSE/PLAY button several times Expected: Tooltips should appear close to the object they describe and thus the tooltip that says "Pause" should appear close to the Pause button. Actual: The tooltips saying "Pause" and "Play" appear in the top left corner of the screen (way outside of the totem application even). ** Affects: totem (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- totem play/pause tooltips appears in the top left corner of the screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321580 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 321580] Re: totem play/pause tooltips appears in the top left corner of the screen
While the repro steps shows how to trigger the bug in totem, note that this bug is actually in the tooltop library of GTK or whatever because I've seen the same thing happen with tooltips in open office for instance. Pedro, can you repro this bug on jaunty? I don't think it's necessary to use the live CD. Just start totem and click the play/pause button several times. ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- totem play/pause tooltips appears in the top left corner of the screen https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/321580 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
