[Bug 2080293] [NEW] Ubuntu Nautilus bug in rename file

2024-09-10 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

System: HP elite-book 440 G1 running Ubuntu 24.04LTS

if you rename a file in Ubuntu Nautilus via "Right-Click/Rename" and
rename a file to a case variation of the same filename, nothing at all
happens?

in order to rename the file simply to change the case of a character you
have to completely change the name of the file to something else, and
then rename it again back to what it was before but with your desired
variation in case

example, rename file from "setup.sh" to "Setup.sh" and nothing happens,
the file is not renamed

you have to rename the file from "setup.sh" to "SSetup.sh" and then
rename it again to "Setup.sh" in order for the file name to actually
change

[Bug 1648931] [NEW] package gconf2 3.2.6-3ubuntu7 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving triggers unprocessed -

2016-12-09 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

This was a reported error during upgrade from 16.04 to 16.10.
Previously 14.04 and have not used any software yet so I am unaware of
what manifestations the bug may have on the GUI or system. Literally
upgraded and updated from 14.04 to 16.04 to 16.10 right after
installation.

I don't if it's a bug. The system sent me here and started my internet
for this. I am using Security Onion.

Again, this was a message during upgrade and nothing else was open on my
computer. Just the message and it continued to upgrade.

[Bug 49579] Re: screen doesn't lock when panel menu is open

2010-03-20 Thread Jay
I've also noticed that the screen doesn't lock in the following
circumstance:

1. Open a right-click menu.
2. Suspend the machine.
3. Wake the machine.

The right-click menu will still be open, and the screen will not be
locked.

Is this close enough to stay in this bug?

[Bug 11334]

Bjorn has stated there is a workaround for this and i think it should be
implemented as other apps are also using the workaround. I dont think
linux users should be penalized by X's issue with the clipboard.

[Bug 11334]

2014-07-15 Thread Jay
After reading through the links provided on this page, the ubuntu
clipboard persistence page has stated that a user can solve this issue
for libreoffice and all other applications by installing a clipboard
manager. It recommends parcellite, but mentions alternatives for xfce
(clipman), KDE (klipper) and Gnome (glipper) desktop environments. Just
placing this information here for future users to find encase they file
the same bug and want a solution until libreoffice solves it itself.

Setting this to NEW as i mistakenly set it to REOPENED.

[Bug 330155] [NEW] Wishlist : Enhance evince with a "note creator"

2009-02-16 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

It could be an amazing feature to have the possibility to create note
(like post it) for each page of a document, it would enhance the use of
pdf.

I don't know "how to", maybe not direct in the file, but something as a
cache or a db, or maybe a file with the same name and with .evnote as an
extention... Could be great to share things and thougth...

Of course active url and things like bold/italic/strike etc... would be
much more confortable, but at least a simple editor page per page would
be really awsome...

Thanks for adding this to the whishlist...

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when "Shut Down" chosen from GUI

2012-10-08 Thread Jay
At http://askubuntu.com/questions/125844/shutdown-does-not-power-off-
computer I found the following suggestion:

Type in terminal:
1. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
2. Find the line: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
3. Change this to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force"
4. Save the file and close the file. 5. Finally, in terminal: sudo update-grub

This works for me. Still, this is a workaround; for Ubuntu to be found
atractive for non-power users, the system should shutdown without having
to edit system files. A solution where this situation is auto-detected
on affected systems and then fixed would be nice.

[Bug 754596] [NEW] Preferences Screen and General Resolution Off screen (too Big)

2011-04-08 Thread Jay
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

Screen Resolution 1024x600. Drivers properly installed and working
correctly for ALL other applications. GMA500 Video and Poulsubo Drivers
correctly compiled and istalled. MSI Wind U110 ECO, Ubuntu 10.10
Netbook

Preferences pages to not properly poll the actual screen resolution when
opening. Certain actions in Calendar, Tasks, Mail and Preference pages
cause all other resolutions to pull this improperly polled value. Once
this happens, screen resolution scaling is incorrectly set too large
causing the lower 1/2 of the screen and menus to be unusable until
application is closed and re-opened.

Main preferences screen is ALWAYS improperly polled, making setup
impossible.

Clearly there is an improperly assigned value in these resolutions
instead of them correctly polling based on the number of people having
issues with this and the variety of screen resolutions under which this
occurs. PLEASE FIX THIS, it goes all the way back to 2.x.x.

Thanks.

[Bug 1767431] Re: restore type-ahead find, again

2019-08-02 Thread Jay Tuckey
This is super annoying, and very unexpected behaviour change
particularly for users coming from Windows. There is a patch to change
the behaviour back here: https://launchpad.net/~lubomir-
brindza/+archive/ubuntu/nautilus-typeahead

At the very least this should be a setting in nautilus, if it isn't made
the default behaviour.

[Bug 1966635] Re: can't move file/directory by drag and drop by using touch monitor

2022-10-26 Thread Jay Chen
Understand this refactoring work is handled by the maintainer and no
release date committed at this point.

Still want to add this in a wish list since this issue is really causing
bad user experience in Wayland mode.

I am asking a fix could land by November '22 for PC OEM platforms with
touch screen in production, if at all possible.

[Bug 1845899] [NEW] gnome-terminal won't run with python 3.7.3, but it will with python 3.6.8

2019-09-29 Thread Jay Sevison
Public bug reported:

For quite some time, I've been battling with a problem where my gnome-
terminal won't run.

I have finally isolated it down to Python 3.7.3.

When my symlink for python3 points to python 3.7.3, I cannot get gnome-terminal
to run.
When I point my symlink for python3 to python 3.6.8, gnome-terminal runs fine.

I have not tried versions between python 3.6.8 and python 3.7.3, but I
have narrowed it down all the way.

Steps for me to reproduce...starting with symlink python3->python 3.6.8
Attempt to run gnome-terminal from favorites bar. It runs fine.
Keep the gnome-terminal open
>From within gnome-terminal:

  $ sudo rm /usr/bin/python3
  $ sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python3.7 /usr/bin/python3

Now attempt to run gnome-terminal from the favorites bar...the mouse
pointer spins, indicating that it is trying to run gnome-
terminal...after a short time, the mouse pointer stops spinning, but
gnome-terminal does NOT start.

Now, from the open gnome-terminal do the following steps:
   $ sudo rm /usr/bin/python3
   $ sudo ln -s /usr/bin/python3.6 /usr/bin/python3

Now attempt to run gnome-terminal from the favorites bar...it runs fine.

I have switched the python3 symlink between python 3.7.3 and python
3.6.8 many times at this point and I'm always able to reproduce the
above.

Feel free to email me if you have questions.

Best regards,

[Bug 1849249] Re: gnome-shell crashed with SIGABRT: mutter:ERROR:../src/core/window.c:4841:set_workspace_state: assertion failed: (workspace == NULL)

2019-12-31 Thread Jay Cornwall
I also see this assertion with a slightly different line number:

[ 4892.053454] desktop gnome-shell[4423]:
mutter:ERROR:../src/core/window.c:4849:set_workspace_state: assertion
failed: (workspace == NULL)

I installed Pro Motion NG from cosmigo.com through Wine (Ubuntu
repository). The crash occurs when opening the "Load Project" file
requester.

I have three monitors. The application does not crash if the window is
moved to the leftmost or rightmost monitor. It crashes on the center
monitor only. This is irrespective of the primary monitor setting, and
also of monitor numbering (I changed the physical connections). The
resolutions are 1920x1200 (left), 1920x1200 (center), 1920x1080 (right),
on an AMD RX 580.

A workaround for this application is to enable Wine's virtual desktop.

[Bug 1698845] [NEW] files in wrong tab deleted

2017-06-19 Thread Micheal Jay
Public bug reported:

This has now happened to me twice:

When deleting files/folders by highlighting and pressing shift-delete,
files in a different tab are deleted instead. In one case, instead of
deleting 20 highlighted files in active tab, 20 000 files in another tab
were deleted.

Both times it has happened when connected to server via sftp. In both
cases it has been files/folders in tabs to the right of active tab which
have been deleted.

Noticed that I was having this issue ~20 Nov 2016. This is the most
recent mention that Google found. I will provide details if there is
interest. (Or should I just post a new bug?)

[Bug 1442828] [NEW] change for LP 1425376 breaks systemd After=network-online.target

2015-04-10 Thread Jay Vosburgh
Public bug reported:

The change to ifup@.service done as part of LP 1425376 appears to break the
ordering of units marked as "After=network-online.target". In my specific
case, a new service script with "After=network-online.target" is erroneously
run concurrently with dhclient. As the new script depends on networking
configuration being complete, it fails as the IP addresses and routes from DHCP
are not configured. This functioned correctly on vivid daily images from a few
days ago, and appears to break starting with the vivid daily from approximately
0409.

Infinity suggested this change as a likely suspect:

diff -Nru systemd-219/debian/extra/units/ifup@.service

and, indeed, reverting this (copying ifup@.service from a few-days old
vivid image to a current image) resolves the problem.

The affected version is ubuntu-vivid-daily-amd64-server-20150409.2
(installed via AWS).

[Bug 1288655] [NEW] terminal gets smaller when maximized and then restored

2014-03-06 Thread Jay Foad
Public bug reported:

1. Open a gnome-terminal window (from the launcher or by pressing Ctrl + Alt +
T)
2. "stty -a | grep rows" reports "rows 24; columns 80;"
3. Maximize the window (by clicking on the maximize button, or double clicking
the title bar, or dragging the window up to the panel)
4. Do the same again to un-maximize the window
5. Now "stty -a | grep rows" reports "rows 23; columns 79;"

Each time I do this, the window keeps getting one character shorter and
one character narrower!

[Bug 1301083] [NEW] Drag and Drop File Auto Opens Folders

2014-04-01 Thread Jay Mac
Public bug reported:

When dragging and dropping a file, if the mouse hovers over a folder for
a split second, the folder opens.

This behaviour is quite jarring. Whether or not you intended to drop
into that folder, you may not have intended to open that folder.

It's a very significant usability issue for Ubuntu 13.10.

[Bug 1152226] Re: nautilus no longer remembers view per directory

2014-04-07 Thread Jay Mac
This seems to me to be a questionable UX decision. Many users would
prefer when going to some folders to see icons and for other folders to
see a list, based on the contents of the folders. It makes less sense to
have the persistence of the setting based on the random fact of a given
window invocation at a given time.

Perhaps it should be a gconf setting, or better yet, a setting in the
Preferences.

[Bug 1306300] [NEW] evolution does'nt work properly with the imap account laposte.net

2014-04-10 Thread jay-allemand
Public bug reported:

Hi,

It seem that evolution does'nt work with the email account at www.laposte.net.
My account is well configurated (I read the documentation and my account work
perfectly with thundirbird and geary).
When starting evolution, it get immediatly connected to laposte.net, thus
everything seems ok. The trouble appears few minutes later when evolution try
to retrieve new emails or if you try to send one. Evolution seems enable to
retrieve new email again and it becomes impossible to read e-mail in the inbox
folder. (see the screen-shot and focus on the statu bar). It alwas display some
message like : "generating message list" ; "retrieving email *" .

To quit evolution, you need to youse the command line kill -9...

Hope it will help to improve Evolution !

Thanks,

[Bug 505466] [NEW] Evolution segmentation fault

2010-01-10 Thread Jay Daniels
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

I can start Evolution and minimize it after reading a couple of emails
on my maildir. I read mail locally, get mail with fetchmail, and
sendmail through evolution with msmtp.

Evolution will seg fault just sitting there minimized, it will just
disappear.

Starting Evolution in the terminal, at the bottom is says seg fault.

First I try reinstall everything related to Evolution and remove the
exchange plugin since I do not use it. Still segfaults.

Then I blow away .evolution directory, same problem again.

I try to debug evolution, here is the output... see attached...

gdb does not show the segault like the terminal, what's up with that?

also, sometimes but very rarely, emapthy window will also disappear.
haven't had much trouble with that though, but it may point to the
problem???

Re: [Bug 505466] Re: Evolution segmentation fault

2010-01-11 Thread Jay Daniels
Thanks Sebastien, However I had to get my system up so I backed up my
files to usb and installed Hardy.

Never had a problem with XP, Jaunty, or Hardy. I'm pretty sure the bug
is related to Karmic and not hardware since I have been using Evolution
in Hardy for a long time with no crashes.

When I first installed Karmic, I experienced seg faults with Synaptics
(when i tried to search), Empathy (rarely but random crash), and
Evolution would always crash at random 2 to 20 minute intervals.

Sorry I could not help with the bug, but it's monday and I had to get my
notebook running.

thanks,

jay

[Bug 351754] Re: Gnome-system-monitor crashes due to missing icon

2009-05-02 Thread jay armstrong
Just had the same issue here. A reboot didn't fix it but as the OP
found, using strace, it was crashing when it couldn't find an icon.

Terminal.svg was missing but didn't solve it. In my case, it couldn't
find picard.xpm (a music tagger) and was aborting. It ran fine as root,

[Bug 518533] Re: Unable to mount location Not Authorized after nautilus upgrade

2012-06-16 Thread Jay Banks
I can confirm this issues still exists in a clean install of 12.04 LTS
using FreeNX. I did find that if I hook a keyboard and a mouse up and
log in locally, I can access the usb thumb drive normally. However, over
FreeNX it says something like "Access Denied - Unauthorized." I can also
access the drive over FreeNX after I have accessed it locally.

Since I mainly use the system remotely, I did find a way to access the
thumb drive over FreeNX without it being too much of a hassel. I made a
DiskUtil.sh script where I do not have to type in my sudo password every
time:

#!/bin/sh
echo "yourSudoPassword" | sudo -S palimpsest

When in the graphical Disk Utility, I can mount the usb drive and then
click on the link on the right hand side that says "Mount Point:
Mounted at /media/Transcend" and it will open up and I can copy to and
from the drive normally. Note that even mounted, I cannot access the
files through Nautilus at the mount point. I have to click the link in
palimpsest or it will not work. But hey, at least I can access my thumb
drive remotely.

And for the record, I know that script file is not the best way to do
that, but I tried several ways to do it correctly and they didn't work
for me...so yeah, there is a script file somewhere on a system that has
my password in it.

[Bug 1115110] [NEW] NEL character doesn't cause gnome terminal to scroll

2013-02-04 Thread Jay Foad
Public bug reported:

Gnome terminal should interpret ESC E as NEL (0x85) (see the
description of "C1 (8-Bit) Control Characters" here:
http://www.xfree86.org/current/ctlseqs.html).

As I understand it, NEL should be treated pretty much like LF (0x0A).

In gnome terminal, if I run "echo -n -e '\eE'" near the top of the
window, it prints a blank line, which is good. But if I run it when the
shell prompt is already at the bottom of the window, it doesn't print a
blank line. This seems wrong.

By contrast, "echo -n -e '\n'" always prints a blank line.

Sometimes it will happen when moving with as few as 100 files. But
generally it is with folders with higher file counts.

[Bug 790307] [NEW] "Time out by message bus" whenever viewing file/folder properties in Nautilus

2011-05-30 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Whenever I view the properties of a file or directory in Nautilus --
whether by right-clicking an icon and clicking "Properties" or by
clicking "Properties" in the "File" menu -- I receive a dialog box that
reads:

Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)

The properties window appears behind this dialog box, and I'm able to
use it, but that message just never fails to show up.

[Bug 313228] Re: a program is still running but i want shut down anyway

2011-05-31 Thread jay armstrong
The app, Tangerine, consistently causes this and is listed as "unknown".
Uninstalling it solves the problem, whether I've started firefox or not.

I see one of two bugs in this issue:
1. Tangerine not identifying itself
2. gnome-session not identifying it

[Bug 874671] Re: Empathy doesn't remember favorites after desktop logout

2011-10-27 Thread Jay S
I think this is part of a larger problem. My chat logs are no longer
getting saved, either.

syslog shows these messages when I try to add a favorite or when i
send/receive a message, respectively:

Oct 27 20:09:56 jay-desktop kernel: [112564.420709] type=1400
audit(1319760596.740:443): apparmor="DENIED" operation="open" parent=1

/telepathy-logger/favourite-contacts.txt" pid=8346 comm="telepathy-
logge" requested_mask="wc" denied_mask="wc" fsuid=1000 ouid=1000

Oct 27 20:27:13 jay-desktop kernel: [113599.103628] type=1400
audit(1319761633.412:598): apparmor="DENIED" operation="mknod" parent=1
profile="/usr/lib/telepathy/telepathy-*"
name="/var/jay/.local/share/TpLogger/logs/gabble_jabber_jay_XXX_2ecom0/xx...@gmail.com/20111028.log"
pid=5324 comm="telepathy-logge" requested_mask="c" denied_mask="c"
fsuid=1000 ouid=1000

I changed some permissions on the folders in /var/jay/.local (and
applied to sub-folders, probably an awful idea) and the problem remains.

I now think this may be due to the fact that I keep my /home/jay/.local

[Bug 883677] [NEW] Changing the default alert sound breaks desktop sound theme

2011-10-29 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Open a terminal, dconf-editor, and the Sound Configuration window.
2) Navigate to org.gnome.desktop.sound in dconf-editor. The value for the key
named "theme-name" should be "ubuntu"
3) In the terminal, run the command:
 /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear the expected "drum beat" question sound.
4) Click on "Bark" in the Sound Configuration window to change the alert sound.
 a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to
"_custom"
5) In the terminal, run this command again:
 /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File or
data not found"
6) Change the alert sound back to "Default" in the Sound Configuration window.
 a) You will notice that the theme-name in dconf-editor has changed to
"freedesktop"
7) In the terminal, run this command again:
 /usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-question"
You will hear no sound and see the message "Failed to play sound: File or
data not found"

In order to get Ubuntu's sound theme back, you have to manually change
the value of theme-name in dconf to "ubuntu".

Expected behavior:

1) When changing alert sound back to "Default," the value of "theme-name" in
dconf should revert to "ubuntu", not "freedesktop".
2) When choosing an alert sound other than "Default", users will not reasonably
expect that many of their other system sounds will disappear. Only the alert
sound itself should change.

More ideally, the selection should be among entire sound *themes*, like
the moblin theme which is available in the repos.

[Bug 883691] [NEW] (Most) Oneiric system sounds do not play

2011-10-29 Thread Jay S
Public bug reported:

I hope I'm filing this against the correct package.

In Oneiric, very few system sounds play. I hear button-clicking sounds
if I have those on, and there is a small "beep" when Thunderbird gets a
new mail, and IM sounds from Empathy work. But more general, system-wide
sounds aren't playing at all.

For instance, if I open gedit, type in some words, then try to close it,
the warning dialog that pops up asking me to save isn't accompanied by
the drum sound I expect.

In dconf-editor, under org.gnome.desktop.sound, I do have the "theme-
name" value set to "ubuntu", and I can play these sounds with canberra
commands such as:

/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play --id="dialog-warning"

But in practice there are few (if any) of these system sounds.

[Bug 874671] Re: Empathy doesn't remember favorites, chat logs when ~/.local is a symlink

2011-10-29 Thread Jay S
Ok, here's what I did.

I adapted the instructions from this comment:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/telepathy-mission-
control-5/+bug/816554/comments/4

adding "owner /var/jay/.local/share/telepathy*/ rw," and the like to
my /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.telepathy file, then running:

sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.telepathy

Empathy is now successfully saving logs, even though
@{HOME}/.local/share/telepathy*/ is a symlink to
/var/jay/.local/share/telepathy*/

Is it the symlinking that is causing this problem? I assume that it is.
Why does apparmor balk at this symlink?

forgotten. Setting them again doesn't survive a logout/login cycle.

I now think this may be due to the fact that I keep my /home/jay/.local
- directory as a symlink to /var/jay/.local on my SSD. This didn't used to
- be a problem in Natty, so I don't know what changed.
+ directory as a symlink to /var/jay/.local on my SSD (and the same with
+ ~/.cache). This didn't used to be a problem in Natty, so I don't know
+ what changed.

syslog shows these messages when I try to add a favorite or when i
  send/receive a message, respectively:

  Oct 27 20:09:56 jay-desktop kernel: [112564.420709] type=1400

I changed some permissions on the folders in /var/jay/.local (and
- applied to sub-folders, probably an awful idea) and the problem remains.
+ applied to sub-folders, probably an awful idea) and the problem
+ remained.
+
+ I adapted the instructions from this comment:
+ control-5/+bug/816554/comments/4
+
+ adding "owner /var/jay/.local/share/telepathy*/ rw," and the like to my
+ /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.telepathy file, then running:
+
+ sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.telepathy
+
+ Empathy is now successfully saving logs, even though
+ @{HOME}/.local/share/telepathy*/ is a symlink to
+ /var/jay/.local/share/telepathy*/
+
+ Is it the symlinking that is causing this problem? I assume that it is.
+ Why does apparmor balk at this symlink?
