[Bug 1606238] Re: gnome-software won't open

2016-09-23 Thread Willem Hobers
I am wondering whether I am seeing the same bug, or something else.
Please advice:

Running live session of Xubuntu Yakkety.
Linux xubuntu 4.8.0-11-generic #12-Ubuntu SMP Sat Sep 17 19:59:56 UTC 2016 i686
athlon i686 GNU/Linux

Starting gnome-software through the menu or through typing gnome-
software in a terminal, the gnome-software window appears, but freezes.
Then, after a few moments, I get an "Invalid error report" dialogue with
"No such file or directory".

In the terminal I see: Segmentation fault (core dumped).

In /var/crash/ there is this file _usr_bin_gnome-software.999.crash
Double clicking it gives the same "Invalid error report".

Public bug reported:

When I needed to install something through synaptic, there were a lot of
packages which needed an update. So I duly updated them. But then there
was a system error, which resulted in this report.

Before this I had wanted to upgrade to 14.10 (from 14.04) which failed
because ubuntu-desktop could not be installed/upgraded (see bug

according to synaptic, were probably the updates for the upgrade.

Hey Tim

Thanks for your advice. I did not realize I have ppa packages installed.
But you are very likely right. Just one question, if I may: one of the
first messages the "normal" upgrade process gives is that it will "block"
the third party software sources before starting the upgrade process. In
this case that also happened. Should that not have made the upgrade
possible, just like purging the ppa's would? Just a n00b question...

[Bug 1544480] [NEW] after upgrading to 16.04 (xubuntu) network drive not mounted

2016-02-11 Thread Willem Hobers
Public bug reported:

after upgrading to 16.04 (xubuntu) network drive not mounted
Asked by Willem Hobers on 2016-02-06

I upgraded from Xubuntu 14.04 to 16.04, because I would like to
attribute to the testing.

After the upgrade my network drive does not mount.

fstab
//192.168.178.73/Thuis /media/Thuis cifs
noserverino,guest,user=,nounix,_netdev,dir_mode=0777,file_mode=0777 0 0

This worked until the upgrade.

When trying to mount I get:

mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on //192.168.178.73/Thuis,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
   need a /sbin/mount. helper program)

In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
   dmesg | tail or so.

And if I do dmesg | tail, it gives:

[ 21.141585] cgroup: new mount options do not match the existing superblock,
will be ignored
[ 24.103109] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth1: link is not ready

[Bug 515336] Re: nautilus crashes when TRASH, COMPUTER, or NETWORK clicked

2010-02-12 Thread Willem Hobers
Is this the place to say that both my computers are affected by this bug
also, and that both are running Ubuntu 9.4 32 bits?

I did the downgrade as mentioned by Rodrigo Moya on one of these systems (Acer
Aspire R3600, 32 bits).
And: thanks Moya! Problem solved. :-)

[Bug 1110580] Re: no gdm at start up. only tty (not really working either)

2013-04-30 Thread Willem Hobers
Sorry for the delay.

I have had a look: there is a folder /var/log/gdm/ but when I try to
open it in syslog I get a permission violation.

If I try to edit the /etc/gdm/custom.conf it shows up as empty.

Can I simply re-install gdm by sudo apt-get install gdm?

Thanks

Just experienced the problem again. The boot after that went well. I
attach the syslog, so as to provide you with some fresh evidence.

I am a noob, so I do not know what I am looking for (or at) in this log.
I do see some things, however, which seem to be not right:

[Bug 1110580] Re: no gdm at start up. only tty (not really working either)

2013-02-05 Thread Willem Hobers
Just experienced the problem again.

I was booted into tty. I then did

sudo gdm, but that dit not work:

failed to acquire org.gnome.displaymanager
could not acquire name; bailing out.

I then did

sudo lightdm

and that DID work.

I attach syslog.

I would appreciate your expertiece and help in fixing this.

** Attachment added: "syslog after problem, but working lightdm"

[Bug 1110580] Re: no gdm at start up. only tty (not really working either)

2013-02-10 Thread Willem Hobers
The problem still persists. It occurs approx. 2 out of 10 times at the
moment.

I have nog clue as to what to do, or where to look to solve the problem.

Should I give more information? Should I attachmore or other log files?
I'd be happy to do so, but you'll have to advice me which information, which
logs you need to analyze the problem.

[Bug 658166] Re: gdm-binary WARNING: Unable to find users: no seat-id found

2011-06-24 Thread Willem Hobers
Hi Pedro,

it's still in the deamon log:
Jun 22 07:14:40 PC15-17 gdm-binary[1147]: WARNING: Unable to find users: no
seat-id found

I am running 10.04 LTS. I do not want to upgrade to Natty on this
machine.

As such it is "still an issue". However: there seems to be no other ill
effect; there is just this message in the log.

[Bug 539440] Re: gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a GtkWindow

2011-02-21 Thread Willem Hobers
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, fully updated:

In the log I see:

Feb 21 19:27:23 PC15-17 gdm-simple-greeter[1390]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a GtkWindow
So I can confirm this warning.

I have a question though: some 10 lines later I see:

Feb 21 19:28:45 PC15-17 gdm-session-worker[1392]: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL:
g_value_get_boolean: assertion `G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed
Feb 21 19:28:54 PC15-17 gnome-session[1543]: WARNING: Could not launch
application 'specto.desktop': Unable to start application: Uitvoeren van
dochterproces ‘specto’ is mislukt (Bestand of map bestaat niet)

Are these warnings related at all?

[Bug 722761] Re: Unable to load desktop file

2011-02-22 Thread Willem Hobers
Another application seems to have the same problem, though:

Feb 22 16:53:54 PC15-17 gnome-session[1546]: WARNING: Could not launch
application 'specto.desktop': Unable to start application: Uitvoeren van
dochterproces ‘specto’ is mislukt (Bestand of map bestaat niet)

Transalion of Dutch:
Execution of child process "specto" failed. No such file or directory.

Just to make sure it is not a gdm problem...

PC15-17 gnome-session[1546]: WARNING: Could not launch application
'gwibber.desktop': Unable to start application: Uitvoeren van

[Bug 722761] Re: Unable to load desktop file

2011-02-25 Thread Willem Hobers
not sure that I am doing *anything* actually. :-)

But, if indeed .desktop is wrongly installed, how do I find out whether
that is the case, and then, if possible, repair it?
