[Bug 2064716] [NEW] gnome-terminal sometimes very dark after gnome unlock

2024-05-03 Thread Walter
Public bug reported:

Symptoms

Sometimes, when coming back to my laptop, and unlocking an existing
GNOME session, I find that my gnome-terminal has turned very dark. I
have found no triggers (other than session unlock) and no fixes to undo
the darkness.

It looks like this:

https://junk.devs.nu/2024/lp0-gnome-terminal-turned-dark/gnome-terminal-
very-dark-on-the-right.png

The window on the right is the one I found after unlocking my GNOME
session. The window on the left was a second terminal I started, which
has the normal brightness.

Using some color picking, I can say that the brightness has been reduced
by 70%-85%.

Here's an animation of the window:

https://junk.devs.nu/2024/lp0-gnome-terminal-turned-dark/gnome-terminal-
turned-very-dark.webm

The video shows:
- The dark window in a smaller state;
- settings are opened, and switched to bright colors;
- both the good and the bad terminals get lighter, but the bad terminal is
still way too dark;
- moving the window to the right shows a glitch in the glitch where the
bottom-most row has normal colors.

Versions

- Ubuntu Jammy 22.04 (many versions)
- gnome-terminal 3.44.0-1ubuntu1
- libmutter 42.9-0ubuntu7

I thought it might be a Wayland thing, but I switched back to Xorg
recently and the problem wasn't gone. I've not seen this bug with Focal.
And my colleagues haven't seen the bug either.

Followup

I have no idea where to look further. I did some probing with xprop on
the window, that gave me no useful info, and may likely not be relevant
as Wayland is also affected.

Any suggestions to get to the bottom of this is appreciated.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to trigger the bug. I always have
terminals open, and only 1% of the time (ball park) when unlocking does
this occur.

Let me know. Cheers!
Walter Doekes

[Bug 2064716] Re: gnome-terminal sometimes very dark after gnome unlock

2024-05-03 Thread Walter
Good question. I did in fact try that:

- In Unnamed profile -> Colors;
- the "Use transparency from system theme" was ticked, but there is no
transparency.
- I unticked it, and and clicked "Use transparent background", and then it was
transparent -- still dark though.

I also tried:

xprop -f _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY 32c -set _NET_WM_WINDOW_OPACITY
0x7fff

Which made it 50% transparent. And then 0x0 which hid the window
entirely and then 0x to make it opaque again.

Alas, no change in darkness.

2024-05-03 Thread Walter
Well. I got some luck in reproducing. Got it twice today (23:14:03 and
23:40:51), and these log messages were seen right around when the screen
locked:

In fact, I know what I was doing:

2024-05-03 23:40:45 sleep 5; start-vpn
2024-05-03 23:42:44 history | tail -n10

Somewhere around 23:40:48 I locked the screen, and at 23:40:50+ code started
running that triggers a (maybe) GUI notification popup.

Full disclosure, that VPN notification popup is mine:
https://github.com/ossobv/openvpn-u2f-setup/blob/main/openvpn-u2f-ask-password

I'm not entirely sure what the sequence of events is here, but those dbus/glib
interactions around the time when things break are too much of a coincidence.
This also explains why I'm the only one having this issue.

[Bug 2064716] Re: gnome-terminal sometimes very dark after gnome unlock

2024-06-11 Thread Walter
Egmont, thanks for your replies.

I've been running this for a few days:

```
gnome-terminal (3.44.0-1ubuntu1wjd0+ubu22.04) jammy; urgency=medium
  * Disable transparency patches:
- 0001-Restore-transparency.patch
- 0001-screen-window-Extra-padding-around-transparent-termi.patch
- scrollbar-background-theming.patch
An attempt to figure out how/why the terminal goes dark sometimes:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/2064716
(LP: #2064716)
```
That is, the Jammy gnome-terminal, but without three patches which seemed to
relate to transparency.

It hasn't improved things. The darkness bug still exists.

I also haven't found any clues of applications (mis)behaving in the same
timeframe. The CLUTTER_IS_TIMELINE assertions still look most related to
the issue at hand.

Trying to see if I can remove/disable some daemons that I don't need
that are active at the same time...

[Bug 2069498] [NEW] (jammy) gdm3 login impossible with fprintd but no libpam-fprintd

2024-06-15 Thread Walter
Public bug reported:

(Note that I'm not using the fingerprint reader.)

If you have:
- fprintd

but not:
- libpam-fprintd

gdm3/pam refuses login.

The following logs are observed at boot:

  dbus-daemon[1928]: [system] Activating via systemd: service
name='net.reactivated.Fprint' unit='fprintd.service' requested by ':1.45'
(uid=128 pid=2541 comm="/usr/bin/gnome-shell " label="unconfined")
  fprintd[2799]: libusb: error [udev_hotplug_event] ignoring udev action change
  fprintd[2799]: libusb: error [udev_hotplug_event] ignoring udev action change
  dbus-daemon[1928]: [system] Successfully activated service
'net.reactivated.Fprint'
  systemd[1]: Started Fingerprint Authentication Daemon.

This is seen when a gdm login is attempted:

  gdm-fingerprint][3012]: PAM unable to dlopen(pam_fprintd.so):
/lib/security/pam_fprintd.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or
directory
  gdm-fingerprint][3012]: PAM adding faulty module: pam_fprintd.so
  gdm-fingerprint][3012]: gkr-pam: no password is available for user

Either removing fprintd or installing libpam-fprintd fixes so you can
log in again.

Versions:
- ubuntu 22.04
- gdm3 42.0-1ubuntu7.22.04.4
- fprintd 1.94.2-1ubuntu0.22.04.1
- libpam-fprintd 1.94.2-1ubuntu0.22.04.1

Cheers,
Walter Doekes

[Bug 2064716] Re: gnome-terminal sometimes very dark after gnome unlock

2024-06-15 Thread Walter
Okay. Finally found the reproducer: it's the visual bell during
screensaver.

Attaching a screenshot.

Reproducing:

- Settings -> Accessibility -> Hearing -> Visual Alerts -> On
  (Flash the entire Window)

- Open a gnome-terminal

- type: xdg-screensaver activate; printf '\a'

- Wake up the screensaver, and notice that the window in which there was
a bell, is darker.

Note that changing the Visual Alert to "Flash the entire screen" fixes
the issue.

It tried this just now on a different Ubuntu/Jammy, and the results are
the same; 100% reproducible.

For what it may be worth. I reinstalled Intrepid last night, keeping
home intact of course. This seems to have fixed the problems I was
having with my Leica and Panasonic cameras. Somehow the updates were
ineffective on my system until now. This might be a last resort for
Leica and Panasonic users still having problems.

[Bug 587601] [NEW] No Logon screen after 'switching user', only an Ubuntu logo and the computers name

2010-05-30 Thread walter----
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

We use our home computer with multiple users.
Initially user switching works fine. But then it stops working.
When trying to switch to a different users (from the screen to unlock a user)
only an Ubuntu Logo is displayed and the computer name. Also trying to login
as a user who was not logged on again is not working. When selecting a user
from the 'powerof menu', the same unusable screen is shown.

using a cntrl-alt-F1, cntrl-alt-F7, cntrl-alt-F8,... can bring us back
to the needed user login screen. But it is not possible to show the
normal Ubuntu login screen (which is difficult to explain to my wife and
children).

Expected fix: when switching users, the overview of all computer users
is displayed.

[Bug 587601] Re: No Logon screen after 'switching user', only an Ubuntu logo and the computers name

2011-01-08 Thread walter----
Ok, I got my gdm stable again.

=> in the /etc/gdm/custom.conf I added in the past manually some settings.
More specific, I added two parameters:

IncludeAll=false
Include=user1,user2,user3

(where user1,... where the users I wanted to be used by gdm to show in the
login screen).
At some point there was an issue in gdm that is was showing all users on the
login screen. Apparently this got fixed at some point.

I now excluded these two setting and now gdm is stable again. The issue is no
longer happening.
I can now run again Ubuntu for weeks without rebooting and having multiple
users using it.

In itself this issue is solved. If some developer wants, he can of
course investigate further why gdm could become instable when these two
settings are used.

enjoy,

Walter

[Bug 23762] Re: Gnome Keyboard layout changes are lost after reboot/-start

2008-05-24 Thread Walter
It appears that gnome get its keyboard settings primarily from X (!)

/etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier  "Generic Keyboard"
Driver  "kbd"
Option  "XkbRules"  "xorg"
Option  "XkbModel"  "pc104"
Option  "XkbLayout" "dvorak"
EndSection

If you put the correct settings in xorg.conf, gnome is not misbehaving
anymore.

[Bug 123955] Re: Can't drag menu items into the root System menu

Happens to me as well in Hardy.

What is really happening, is that alacarte is not updating the screen
properly. You can add an item, but it won't show it. After I added a New
Seperator, all of a sudden all my newly added items magically appeared.
Since then, alacarte seems to behave again.

[Bug 222957] Re: nautilus add bookmark doesn't work

2008-04-29 Thread Walter
Trigger the issue:
Make sure the homefilesystem is full.
In nautilus, click "add bookmark" from the menu or press Ctrl-D. The bookmark
briefly appears in the bookmark sidebar, but then disappears again.
"Edit bookmarks" shows the dialog but says "No bookmarks defined".

The issue is gone after freeing up enough space.

[Bug 228881] [NEW] Totem does not work anymore

2008-05-09 Thread Walter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Since I install RealPlayer Totem does not play anything anymore.
RealPlayer does. I uninstall RealPlayer but Totem is still not working.
It opens videos alright and I can select any part of the video and see
the image, but it's like paused all the time, and no sound. Same happens
with mp3 files and music files.

I installed Totem-xine, it loads, then open a file and then crashes.

[Bug 23762] Re: Gnome Keyboard layout changes are lost after reboot/-start

2008-05-16 Thread Walter
I have a dvorak layout in Hardy. Every time I start X, it is reset to qwerty
although the System|Preferences|Keyboard|Layouts still shows "USA Dvorak".
To fix this, I remove "USA Dvorak", choose "+Add", and add "USA/Dvorak". Now I
can type in Dvorak again. I have to do this every single time I start X. The
setting is not being remembered, or it is not being honored at startup.

It acts exactly (in 2008) as described above (in 2005).

[Bug 233816] [NEW] "open with" dialog shows programs that are no longer installed

2008-05-21 Thread Walter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Right-click any file or directory and choose "Open with other
application" from the context menu. The "Open With" dialog gives me list
of applications. Some of these applications, like "Google Earth", "XMMS
Music Player", and "BitTorrent" are no longer installed on my system.
Either I removed them myself, and some of them were even pulled from
Ubuntu. In fact, on my system, "XMMS Music Player" is listed three times
(!)

On top of that, there seems to be no way of removing these dead apps
from the list.

Also, the list is not sorted by name. Ugly and inconvenient ... should
this be a seperate bug report?

It would be nice if the list of applications shown in the "Open With" dialog
would:
- not include applications that have already left the building.
- not show duplicates
- be alphabetically sorted

Re: [Bug 181457] Re: PDF documents are not printed

2008-01-09 Thread Walter
No there are no space in the document name.
One of those is a document I get regularly from Swisscom (a phone
provider).
The Problem seem to be quite new!
I was using regularly the print function.
On Monday 7th January I noticed the problem the first time, but I can't
say exactly when I could print correctly the last time (should be around
20th of December).

Kind regards
Walter Frey

[Bug 2056205] [NEW] Noble: Nautilus does't show available resources in network

2024-03-05 Thread Walter Ribeiro
Public bug reported:

I have 3 Ubuntu machines on my home network. Two of them with 22.04 and this
one with Noble.
On both computers with 22.04, Nautilus shows network shared folders, which I

network shared folders are not shown.

Yay, this bug has finally been triaged!
That means we'll see a fix soon, right? Right? Especially since the upstream

[Bug 642872] [NEW] No volume control in panel

2010-09-19 Thread Stef Walter
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

Ever since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.4 and now to 10.10 alpha, there is
no volume control in the GNOME panel. There doesn't seem to be a way to
add it. Volume control is not listed in the 'Add to panel' dialog.

My sound works perfectly, and the volume control buttons on the keyboard
work.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2018-08-20 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Phillip and bodhi, I know this is something we have discussed before,
but I'm going to say it again and hopefully for the last time: please
keep your comments civil. You can disagree with each other all you want,
but do it respectfully, please. If you see yourself using the word "you"
(or if it's implied) in a comment, that's a sign you're probably doing
something wrong.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2018-09-10 Thread Walter Lapchynski
bodhi, having the Technical Board review Phillip's posts might be
completely reasonable so as to finally end this conversation once and
for all. That has no bearing on the moderation, though.

The entire Ubuntu Community is bound by the terms of the Code of
Conduct, which, in short, means being nice to one another, regardless of
our points of view. So, I'm sorry, you don't just get to treat people
however you want just because you disagree with them. There is no
moderation as it concerns your attempts to correct a confusing technical
situation. Where the moderation exists is where it no longer remains
technical and especially where it becomes a personal attack.

[Bug 1133477] Re: cut-n-paste move files got stuck forever

2017-03-28 Thread Walter Lapchynski
I see no clear test case bug triagers can try to do further research on.
I have no information from syslog, dmesg, or any tracing or anything. Is
this only with images? What's the minimum number or size? I would this
this has something to do with a generic Backend, so we should look for
conditions that are universal across all file managers. Please provide
this so we can continue researching. If there's no clear way to
reproduce, no matter how often this happen or how long it's reported, we
cannot fix this.

[Bug 1216788] Re: #!/usr/bin/python files and similar variants are not shown as executable files

2014-10-14 Thread Walter Lapchynski
based on what you have shown, it's unclear what the issue is:
1. are the files executable in the terminal? if so, you should check the
executable flags. this may be obvious, but it's worth looking into.
2. are they only files that use #!/usr/bin/python? what about python3? what
about #!/usr/bin/env python? for that matter, where does /usr/bin/python point
to? it is a symbolic link after all.
3. is it only a problem being able to double click them in the GUI? if so, try
running pcmanfm in the terminal and double clicking on the icon. what output
do you get in the terminal?

furthermore, what are the versions of everything are we talking about?
what 14.10 image? a release or a daily image? which one? what is the
last version you can say this was working with?

2014-10-14 Thread Walter Lapchynski
if you double click on the file, does it open like normal?

are there ANY executable files that show the icon?

where's the upstream link to this hint you got?

what version of 14.10? is it an alpha? beta? daily image?

what versions did this last work with?

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2015-09-27 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Currently, on Lubuntu Trusty, I have no problems with Skullcandy Hesh 2 and:
 * kernel 3.13.0-63-generic #103
 * pulseaudio 1:4.0-0ubuntu11.1+kxstudio1 (I did not test with the standard
Canonical version, sorry)
 * bluez 4.101-0ubuntu13.1
 * blueman 1.23-git201403102151-1ubuntu

though I will note it's not always as seamless as I would like. I've discovered
elsewhere people suggesting that the adapter is turned on after pulse does its
check for bluetooth adapters. That leaves you two choices:
 1. pactl load-module module-bluetooth-discover && pulseaudio -k (note actually
sending a KILL signal to the daemon may get it unstuck if it's not behaving)
 2. remove the conditional from /etc/pulse/default.pa regarding loading
module-bluetooth-discover
neither of which are particularly elegant, but oh well.

This and similar issues are ultimately an aesthetic issue, though, and
deserve a separate bug report, as this more general one has brown
extensive enough. From my experience, audio sink service (A2DP) *IS*
possible with current versions.

I'm inclined to call this fixed, unless I hear otherwise from folks.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2017-12-08 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Speaking as a member of the Ubuntu Community Council, I'm going to have
to ask that we dial down the tone here. As you know, the Code of Conduct
(https://www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/conduct) means that we should
act with respect and consideration, act collaboratively and work towards
consensus and clarity. That's sadly not what I'm seeing in this
discussion and we need to put an end to it.

I will also comment that if anyone sees a violation of this, the
appropriate action is not to escalate the language, but to take it down
a notch. If you don't feel like you can do that, that's what the
Community Council is for. Discussing someone's personal history publicly
not to mention speculating about someone's medical conditions, however
appropriate it is in regards to a violation of the CoC, is not in any
way respectful or considerate.

That said, let's keep any further discussion about people directed
towards community-coun...@lists.ubuntu.com and let's keep the bug report
for talking about the actual software.

Speaking of the bug, some things to point out:

 1. I note that this is a known issue in the 17.10 release
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ArtfulAardvark/ReleaseNotes#Desktop) with a note
suggesting that Fedora is the upstream. That said, if the problem is an issue
of upstream Wayland security policy, then, this is a bug report that should be
filed upstream. In other words, it is not an Ubuntu problem.
 2. If the issue is how Ubuntu deals with this, there are currently several
documented workaround to fixing the problem as above, and it's clear that other
work is being done (PolicyKit, admin URIs, etc.) to try to solve this problem
once and for all.

Thank you all.

We need to talk about software here, not personal issues. You both are
going to stop attacking each other, defending yourself against each
other, and talk about software. If you cannot talk about the software
without getting these other issues intermingled here, do not comment at
all.

[Bug 607999] Re: gsettings-data-convert crashed with signal 5 in g_object_newv()

2018-04-28 Thread Walter Lapchynski
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Beyond that, I have not seen a bug likes this in many years. If you
could provide additional information on how it affects a currently
supported release, that would be most helpful.

** Changed in: gconf (Ubuntu)
   Status: Triaged => Incomplete
