[Bug 1565740] [NEW] A stop job for user session delays shutdown on Xenial

2016-04-04 Thread Saurav
Public bug reported:

On at least Xubuntu 16.04 a message saying that a stop job is running
for a user (the user account which was logged in to) sometimes appears
on shutdown (or reboot) and delays the shutdown process (by 90 seconds
by default). This problem used to occur on previous versions of some
distributions but was fixed, as far as I remember, on Fedora. I am
unable to find out details of what is causing this.

[Bug 360679] Re: Text color for selecting alternative sessions in GDM like KDE is unreadable

2009-04-27 Thread saurav
Yes, I still have the issue and I have nothing in /var/log/messages or
syslog. But I think I found the problem. I have specified a gtkrc file
in Login Window Preference (same gtkrc file from the Human theme). By
default, no gtkrc file is specified and in that case the problem is not
there.

[Bug 290780] [NEW] totem-xine hangs when playing any mp3 or avi file

2008-10-29 Thread saurav
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04
Package : totem/totem-xine 2.22.1-0ubuntu2
libxine1/libxine1-ffmpeg/libxine1-all-plugins/libxine1-misc-plugins/libxine1-x/libxine1-gnome/libxine1-plugins
 1.1.11.1-1ubuntu3.1

I was able to play mp3 and avi (divx) files in totem till yesterday.
Today when I tried to play to any of these files, totem starts and
displays video (or visualization for mp3) but no sound. After displaying
just a few frames it hangs. Doing a pause/resume doesn't help.

A screenshot is attached.

Here is the stack trace (First bt after hang, 2nd bt after pause/resume)

[Bug 584351] Re: Notification area does not contain icons

2010-05-24 Thread Saurav
I have a similar problem. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop with Intel
GM45 graphics, on which the icons in my notification area sometimes come
up as overlapped duplicates, sometimes as broken images and sometimes
not at all (missing icons). However, in my case this is random and
logging out and then logging in again usually corrects the problem for
the time being. I will attach a screenshot the next time I experience
this issue. Bug #569996 too seems to be caused by this one, although it
is marked as affecting gnome-power-manager as of this writing.

I did not experience this problem in any previous version of Ubuntu and
neither on any other distribution so I did not know that this is such a
long-standing issue. It is not just a visual annoyance. It causes delays
when you need to access the icons' functionality and thus is a major
problem when time is at a premium. It needs to be corrected immediately.

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-05-24 Thread Saurav
Several users seem to be experiencing difficulties shutting down,
rebooting or logging out in the absence of the panel icon's
functionality. The following methods may help: -

If you want the functions for logging out, shutting down, etc., back in
the System menu, right-click the power-button or "shut down" icon on the
panel designed for this, which by default appears in the top-right
corner, and select Remove From Panel. You may want to move the rest of
the items to reclaim the empty space.

If you want to shut down or reboot, the traditional method is through
the command shutdown -h now or shutdown -r now, but you can also press
the Ctrl+Alt+Delete key combination.

If you want to shut down, reboot, log out, hibernate or suspend, you can
use one of the commands gnome-session-save --logout, gnome-session-save
--logout-dialog or gnome-session-save --shutdown-dialog. See man gnome-
session-save for more information.

Press Alt+F2 and type the command in the window that appears if you do
not wish to open the Terminal.

Also, as mentioned by f00fyf00fer, most functionality can be
alternatively accessed from the main menu. However, some critical
functions such as the Network Manager functions and the indication of
battery state on a laptop cannot be so easily accessed in a GUI setting
in the absence of the panel icons. Besides, the problem is not so much
the use of textual commands as the forced use of such commands because
of the malfunctioning of elementary GUI facilities. These are, it seems
to me, the main reasons people are so angry here.

[Bug 584351] Re: Notification area icons missing or broken

2010-05-24 Thread Saurav
@seth1123: First, the problems described in bug #439448 are numerous,
covering almost all the symptoms being experienced across the user base.
The specific issue(s) you are experiencing also seem to stem from this
bug, so you might consider marking this one as a duplicate of 439448.
Second, you probably did not find 439448 because of mistakenly marking
firefox as the affected package. Trying to add apport-collect
information for gnome-panel for this bug, it was recommended that I file
a separate bug report. Only then on trying to do that did Launchpad find
several similar bug reports where I found 439448. Actually, there ought
to be an easy way to specify the affected package as a search criterion
when we search the database manually.

Regards,
Saurav

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-05-26 Thread Saurav
@Chris: Will try what you have suggested and will report back.

@Märt: The problems you have mentioned with the battery applet are
actually two separate problems. The phantom icon is due to this bug. The
incorrect battery charge information shown is a separate problem. It
shows what upower reports. I have filed a separate bug report for that
as bug #574756.

I have experienced double battery icons in the default configuration of
the icon's visibility: System, Preferences, Power Management, General,
Notification Area, Only display an icon when charging or discharging. On
changing that setting to 'Always display an icon,' at least the problem
of the double battery icon gets resolved, although the whole thing may
still sometimes get corrupted as a consequence of the bug we are
tracking here.

Can people affected by this bug please try adding the following command

pkill gnome-panel && gnome-panel

I have been using this and haven't had the problem in several days but I

[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets

2010-06-10 Thread Saurav
@Teej: 1) It works for me. 2) It will not conflict with gdm because it
runs after the user has logged in. 3) It will not result in extra panels
(see point 6 below). 4) It has as yet always resulted in a panel that is
"normal" and not yet in one that needs to be "taken back to normal." 5)
The command can, of course, be replaced by killall gnome-panel or just
pkill gnome-panel because the panel restarts automatically. I was
experimenting with the && operator just to be on the safe side. 6) To
test all of this, when you are logged in and the panels are all working
correctly, open the terminal and try the commands pkill gnome-panel or
killall gnome-panel, and gnome-panel & separately.

@Zbych: There does not seem to be any known "solution" to this problem
yet, which is a pity. Every workaround is always "silly" from the point
of view of correctness. That is why it is called a workaround.

[Bug 873783] [NEW] Nautilus does not open every alternate time

2011-10-13 Thread Saurav
Public bug reported:

Expected behaviour: Every time I click on the launcher icon for
Nautilus, a Nautilus file browsing window should open.

Actual behaviour: -
Once I open a Nautilus file browsing window, then close it, then try to open it
again, it does not open. The panel's 3D effect disappears, the Nautilus icon in
the launcher pulsates as if trying to open it, and a glimpse of the Nautilus
window sometimes flashes for a fraction of a second, then nothing happens. When
the launcher icon has stopped pulsating and I then click on it again, the
Nautilus window opens correctly. This process repeats every time I close the
window.

This may be related to bug #674876 because the problem disappears after
removing Ubuntu One, but I am not sure if these two bugs are actually
related.

[Bug 354674] [NEW] metacity doesn't remember window positions on session restore

2009-04-03 Thread saurav
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

On session restore metacity doesn't remember the position of the
windows last opened. Specifically gnome-terminal is always opened at the
top left corner with its title bar under top panel, making it difficult
to move the window without using Alt-drag (which is not obvious and very
annoying to do it everytime)

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
Package: metacity 1:2.25.144-0ubuntu2

[Bug 1891767] [NEW] Nautilus not showing video thumbnails

2020-08-15 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

Using Ubuntu 20.10 (Groovy) Daily Live, GNOME session (gnome-session) on
Wayland. Nautilus is no longer showing thumbnails (generated by Totem)
for some video files, although the Totem thumbnail generator (totem-
video-thumbnailer) is working. Nautilus is showing thumbnails for video
files with (Ogg) Theora codec content (even if wrapped in a non-Ogg file
format, such as mkv), but not for others, although I have installed all
the required/usual libraries (libav*, gstreamer1*). Deleting the
thumbnail fail cache (~/.cache/thumbnails/fail/) does not help.
Installing ffmpegthumbnailer does not help either. This seems to be a
regression, or maybe some libraries for video files in non-free codec
formats have not been updated properly. Package versions are as
follows:-

Nautilus: 1:3.37.90-1ubuntu1
Totem: 3.34.1-2ubuntu2

[Bug 1891767] Re: Nautilus not showing video thumbnails

2020-08-18 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Sorry, can't relate times exactly. It was after I installed all the
libav and gstreamer libraries, and it happens every time. Personally, I
don't see a connection with the logs, but it seems to me that the issue
has started after Nautilus was upgraded to 3.37.90. The older ones
(e.g., 3.37.3 or 3.37.1) didn't have the issue.

[Bug 1875591] [NEW] GNOME does not lock screen on closing lid

2020-04-28 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 20.04 (Focal Fossa) (amd64 on x86_64), GNOME 3.36.1 (as reported
by Settings -> About), X11, gnome-power-manager 3.32.0-2, gnome-
settings-daemon 3.36.0-1ubuntu2.

On my laptop, I want to lock the screen when I close the lid. I have set
HandleLidSwitch=lock and HandleLidSwitchExternalPower=lock in
/etc/systemd/logind.conf. I have also set both org.gnome.settings-
daemon.plugins.power lid-close-ac-action and org.gnome.settings-
daemon.plugins.power lid-close-battery-action to 'blank'. However, when
I log in after a boot-up and close the lid WITHOUT performing any action
such as opening a shell menu or starting an application, the system does
not lock the screen and I directly get back to the desktop after re-
opening the lid. This continues until I perform any such action as
mentioned above; after that the screen is locked on closing the lid
every time as expected (until next boot).

[Bug 1698270] Re: Totem pauses and stutters during video playback even when CPU usage is low

2017-06-15 Thread Saurav Sengupta
This happens in full-screen mode for a window with client-side
decorations using OpenGL. Another workaround is to use GNOME MPV without
CSD or without OpenGL:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=778766#c2

Re comment #2: With GNOME MPV, it doesn't happen on KDE Plasma for me
even if both CSD and OpenGL are enabled.

[Bug 1701780] [NEW] GTK file chooser shows entries from /sys, /dev, etc.

2017-06-30 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

On Kubuntu 17.10 Alpha 1, the GTK file chooser shows several unwanted
entries from /sys, /dev, etc. For me, this occurs in the GTK3 file
chooser opened from Firefox, GNOME Disks, etc. At the time of writing, I
haven't tested whether it occurs in the GTK2 chooser as well. I have
attached a screenshot showing the problem.

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2017-01-21 Thread Saurav Sengupta
The Bluetooth device works as an audio output device just fine in the
live session. Perhaps this is broken by some update? I tried downgrading
all PulseAudio-related packages to the original release versions, but no
luck.

Re comment #167: The fix does not work for me (Ubuntu GNOME 16.10).

[Bug 1283003] Re: [Bluetooth + 14.04] Bluetooth headsets are not working after last couple of updates

2017-01-23 Thread Saurav Sengupta
I got a bluetoothd crash, but I cannot get apport to report it (nothing
happens if I select the option to send an error report). I have saved
the .crash file and can attach it here if required.

Bluetooth audio works on KDE (Kubuntu). If KDE (kubuntu-desktop) is
installed alongside GNOME, it works on GNOME as well(!).

[Bug 1440275] Re: Ubuntu GNOME only allows regional format setting for US, UK, Canada, Australia, and NZ

2015-05-08 Thread Saurav Sengupta
My problem, as linked to from comment #12, is that the Region & Language
panel does not list India (English). Even if it lists a non-English
format such as Korean as mentioned in comment #10, it still does not
list any English formats other than the few noted in the OP. Installing
language packs for Hindi and Bengali, for instance, lists the respective
formats for India, but some English formats, for example, India,
Nigeria, Zambia, etc., do not have specific language pack packages, and
are not listed. On other distributions, the Region & Language panel uses
the languages and formats selected by the user or installed on the
system. For example, on Arch and its derivatives, the formats generated
by locale-gen from /etc/locale.gen and listed by locale -a are all
listed in the Region & Language panel. On Ubuntu (GNOME), although
locale-gen generates all English locales and locale -a lists them, they
are not listed in the Region & Language panel.

[Bug 1114887] [NEW] Random hangs with GDM3

2013-02-03 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

I am using GNOME Shell and experience random hangs while using GDM (v3)
as the display manager on Ubuntu. The technical specifications are given
below:-

Ubuntu version: 12.10 amd64
linux version: 3.5.0-23.35 generic
gdm version: 3.6.1-0ubuntu1
gnome-shell version: 3.6.2-0ubuntu0.2
gnome-session version: 3.6.0-0ubuntu1.1
System: Toshiba Satellite laptop C850-P5010
Graphics: Intel Sandybridge Mobile (Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core
Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09), also called Intel
Integrated HD Graphics)

I have installed all and only officially released updates for GDM,
GNOME, X and the Linux kernel. The GDM Greeter log shows a "failed to
create drawable" message. The hang either occurs randomly while starting
the system or equally randomly if I log out and log in graphically
several times in a row. I cannot duplicate the hang reliably. The system
stops responding to all input and I need to force the power off to get
out of the situation. I have also experienced the same problem on the
Acer Aspire 5755. I have not installed/used the GDM3 Setup tool or
changed any GDM parameters from the defaults.

[Bug 1040394] [NEW] Evolution global menus keep changing

2012-08-22 Thread Saurav Sengupta
Public bug reported:

In Ubuntu 12.04, while using Evolution, the global drop-down menus keep
changing. Opening different modules, such as Contacts or Calendar, or
even going back to a previous module, such as Mail -> Contacts -> Mail,
causes the order of the drop-down menus in the global menu bar to keep
changing. For example, File, Edit, ... changes to Edit, File,

Ubuntu release: 12.04 LTS (precise) amd64
Kernel: 3.2.0-30-generic #47+kamal6~DellXPS-Ubuntu SMP
Evolution version: 3.2.3-0ubuntu6
Expected behaviour: The order of the drop-down menus remains consistent across
modules.
Actual behaviour: Changing modules changes the order of the drop-down menus in
the global menu bar.
How to reproduce: -
1. Open Evolution and ensure that the window is maximised.
2. Check the order of the drop-down menus by pointing to the global menu bar.
3. Change to a different module, such as Contacts or Calendar.
4. Repeat step 2 to verify that the order of the menus is not as it should be.

Launcher auto-hide is enabled.
