[Bug 506396] Re: locale is not set

2010-07-03 Thread Philippe
I would like to add that this issue may not be closed yet. I have just
upgraded to version 10.04 I have a locale issue. If I log in as a user
running the command "locale" the following results are obtained. (This
is also the same if I run sudo locale).

LANG=en_CA.ISO-8859-1
LC_CTYPE="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_NUMERIC="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_TIME="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_COLLATE="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_MONETARY="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_MESSAGES="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"

LC_TELEPHONE="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"
LC_ALL=

if I log in as root, I get
LANG=C
LC_CTYPE="C"
LC_NUMERIC="C"
LC_TIME="C"
LC_COLLATE="C"
LC_MONETARY="C"
LC_MESSAGES="C"
LC_PAPER="C"
LC_NAME="C"
LC_ADDRESS="C"
LC_TELEPHONE="C"
LC_MEASUREMENT="C"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="C"
LC_ALL=

/var/lib/locales/supported.d/en contains the following
en_CA.ISO-8859-1 ISO-8859-1
en_HK.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_DK.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_IN UTF-8

en_BW.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_AG UTF-8
en_ZA.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_CA.UTF-8 UTF-8
en_IE.UTF-8 UTF-8

 /etc/default/locale contains
LANG="en_CA.ISO-8859-1"

/var/lib/locales/supported.d/local contains:
en_CA.ISO-8859-1 ISO-8859-1
en_US.UTF-8 UTF-8

Why is the root user not acquireing the same language settings as the
general user? How can I fix that?

Thank you

[Bug 438841] Re: Jaunty: Evolution is excrutiatingly slow to load images.

2010-08-04 Thread Philippe
I have just updated to Evolution 2.30 hoping to solve the problem but it didn't.
I think it is important to solve this because many people turn to thunderbird
due to time taken to load images.
It's a shame because I think Evolution is really good.

[Bug 221112] Re: Can't use space bar in search bar when using french alternative keyboard

2009-09-22 Thread Philippe
I fixed this bug with Keyboard layout: France Alternative

- In System => Preferences => Keyboard
- In Layout tab
- Click Layout Options
- Expand the latest option: Using space keyto input non-breakable space
character
- Select Usual space at any level

No need to restart X nor Rythmbox: it works straight away.

Hope it helps!

[Bug 1971097] [NEW] Cannot switch between light/dark theme in the GNOME session

2022-05-01 Thread Lepaffe Philippe
Public bug reported:

In the Ubuntu session, gnome-control-center has an "Appearance" section
which allows to switch from Light and Dark themes (which will apply to
GTK4 apps as well as set the preference for GTK3 apps), but that section
doesn't exist in the control center in the GNOME session.

This means that while you can still choose alternate themes using GNOME
Tweaks, they won't properly apply the chosen variant, and by default
setting a dark theme will apply that theme's light variant to GTK3 apps
while also not switching GTK4 apps to the dark variant of libadwaita.

You can set the which variant with the command line ("gsettings set
org.gnome.desktop.interface color-scheme prefer-dark"), but you cannot
do this within the UI from the GNOME session like you can from the
Ubuntu session.

My understanding is that this stems from the gnome-control-center being
in its 41.4 version, with the light/dark switch backported in for the
Ubuntu session but not the GNOME session. That in my opinion doesn't
make for a great user experience in the GNOME session.

[Bug 1804166] [NEW] Asks for "unnamed" key instead of real name

2018-11-20 Thread Philippe Vaucher
Public bug reported:

Hello,

Whenever I try to ssh into a server for the first time, a GUI popup asks
for the key password:

"An application wants access to the private key "Unnamed", but it is
locked:"

I can then enter my password, but I have to guess which key it is:

```
-rw---  1 philippe philippe 1.8K Jan 27  2015 sysadmin
-rw---  1 philippe philippe  381 Jan 27  2015 sysadmin.pub
```

I could be the "support" or the "sysadmin" key, but because the dialog
only diplay "Unnamed" I have to remember which server uses which. I
think it should display "sysadmin" or "support" instead of "Unnamed".

[Bug 1817389] Re: GIMP icon sizes small on large and huge setting

2020-04-26 Thread Philippe Alff
I have the same issue on a freshly installed Ubuntu 20.04, using the apt
package of gimp.
The laptop is a X270 12" with 1920x1080.
I noticed that the problem only occurs at fractional scaling (125%, 150%), at
100% scaling the icon sizes behave normal.

[Bug 1993557] [NEW] Nautilus "Files" hangs when trying to type search string

2022-10-19 Thread Philippe Lamalle
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I recently installed Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS (dual boot installation on a new Dell
XPS15 laptop shipped with Windows 11 Pro).

For the last couple of days, when I try typing more than one letter in the
files search menu, I get a ' "Files" is not responding ' message and have to
force quit.

My /var/log/syslog (and a syslog.1) had grown to a large number of GB (so I
won't attempt to attach it). I purged them a while ago but syslog has grown
again to >23GB. It seems filled by lines all similar to these two:
Oct 19 16:58:57 [...] tracker-miner-f[2233]: g_file_equal: assertion 'G_IS_FILE

Oct 19 16:58:57 [...] tracker-miner-f[2233]: g_file_has_prefix: assertion

[Bug 1993557] Re: Nautilus "Files" hangs when trying to type search string

2022-10-20 Thread Philippe Lamalle
I performed a Files search with gdb running - since this is where my
trouble lies. Files hanged as before. I tried ^C within the gdb screen,
but without effect. I had to force quit Files before I could type
anything in the gdb.

Now, I have tried again and was able to ^C in gdb with force quit in
Files. The new gdb-nautilus.txt is attached, hope this is more useful.

Not sure what I have to do to find out about about tracker and would
need more detailed guidance - being an end user and not an IT
professional: according to Synaptic package manager I have tracker,
tracker-extract and tracker-miner-fs  3.3.0-1 installed. But typing
'tracker' or 'tracker-control' results in 'command not found'.

[Bug 1993557] Re: Nautilus "Files" hangs when trying to type search string

2022-11-07 Thread Philippe Lamalle
Sebastien,

Sorry, haven't had time to pursue this recently... A little more searching led
me to this question:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/346211/tracker-store-and-tracker-miner-fs-eating-up-my-cpu-on-every-startup

What I see appears completely similar. The syslog gets huge, filled with
messages such as:
(tracker-miner-fs-3:7665): GLib-GIO-CRITICAL **: 22:26:55.266: g_file_equal:
assertion 'G_IS_FILE (file1)' failed

Following the discussion at
https://gnome.pages.gitlab.gnome.org/tracker/faq/#how-can-i-disable-tracker-in-gnome
I have executed
systemctl mask --user --now tracker-miner-fs-3.service

This seems to have solved my problem: syslog has stopped filling my hard drive,
and the nautilus search in Files is back to normal functioning.
I don't know what I may be missing without tracker-miner, though.

Thanks again for your help - let me know if trying to get further debug
information could be useful.

Sorry, I tought it was updating correctly, but after a few seconds it
changed to the "default" weather.

The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it would be nice if
somebody having it could send the bug to the developers of the software
by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a

@Mark

Scrollbars are still very useful even with a mousewheel, when navigating
in a large document for example by either scrolling the bar or middle
clicking, please don't kill them at least *before* something as useful
is implemented :)

Furthermore, a lot of users (at least around me) don't even know how to
use touch scrolling (or hate it because it's 'hard' to use).

[Bug 530340] Re: Temperature for my city is always "--"

2010-03-01 Thread Philippe Gauthier
For some reason, the weather station stopped reporting almost anything
other than wind speed. See [1]

If this weather station should no longer be used and another should
replace it, please send the bug the to the GNOME developers writing the
software. You can learn more about how to do this at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME.

Otherwise, there is not much we can do for now except waiting for the
weather station to come back. For this reason, I am marking this bug as
Invalid. Please reopen it if necessary. To reopen the bug report you can
click on the current status, under the Status column, and change the
Status back to "New".

Thanks in advance!

[Bug 491004] Re: Vinagre displays color incorrectly with TigerVNC server on Windows

2009-12-01 Thread Philippe Gauthier
The server is TigerVNC (I think it is the older TightVNC that has been
renamed). The problem is that Vinagre (gtk-vnc?) thinks it understands
the color protocol used by the server. There is also no color or screen
resolution blinking.

There is nothing special in the debug output (attachment in comment #2)
and Vinagre thinks the output is 24-bit RGB. xvnc4viewer has the
following output with the exact same server (with no problem):

[Bug 494145] Re: weather does not appear in gnome-clock because of missing timezone

2009-12-09 Thread Philippe Gauthier
Thank you for your reply.

> Is it possible to solve this glitch or to add every timezone available in the
> gnome-clock?
This is an decision from the GNOME developers not to include every timezone,
but use only the minimum necessary time zone identifiers instead of all the
historical names. For this part of your report, I would not consider it a bug.
Also, except from displaying America/Toronto even if you are in Montreal, it
should not have any difference on the behavior of the computer.

There was a bug in the original libgweather package that may come from
the installation discs causing the weather not to appear for some
cities, such as Montreal. This fix is included in libgweather
2.28.0-1ubuntu2. I am not sure what needs to be done to make it work if
the weather location is set to Montreal before the package is updated.
For more info, see the discussion for this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/libgweather/+bug/404616

Is it possible for you to use a Live CD and attempt to reproduce the
bug? I am not able to see this with a currently working system. There is
a possibility that the libgweather update fixes this bug after
installation.

[Bug 494145] Re: weather does not appear in gnome-clock because of missing timezone

2010-01-04 Thread Philippe Gauthier
I could finally reproduce this bug on a clean installation. This bug
happens because the clock applet sends the system timezone to
libgweather and the timezone identifier is considered "obsolete" by
libgweather. (See bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgweather/+bug/291853 about
obsolete timezones.) Setting the location from the clock applet (using
the Set... button) or changing the system timezone is a work around for
this bug.

I am marking this bug as Confirmed and sending the bug upstream.

Thanks again!

[Bug 512426] Re: weather applet german state brandenburg does not exists

2010-01-26 Thread Philippe Gauthier
@marc.hanish: Yes, it does depend on the availability of weather
stations. In particular, most weather web sites seem to refer to the
Berlin-Tegel station for the weather in Potsdam. This is also the
weather station that is used when "Berlin, Berlin, Germany" is selected
as a location.

There seems to be a small station in Cottdam, but the Berlin airport
station is still closer, and probably is much more accurate.

I am closing this bug report because it seems to me that there is an
acceptable solution. Please reopen it if you think there is still a
problem, and don't hesitate to submit bug reports in the future. To
reopen the bug report you can click on the current status, under the
Status column, and change the Status back to "New". Thanks again!

[Bug 373268] Re: Can't choose the exact timezone location in some countries

2010-01-31 Thread Philippe Gauthier
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You would only need a separate time zone for cities in
the Provincia de San Luis, otherwise the rest of Argentina is
(officially) in the same time zone. Is this distinction what what you
mean is this bug report?

Thanks!

[Bug 471162] Re: Santa Fe, Argentina is not included in locations

2010-01-31 Thread Philippe Gauthier
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue you are reporting is an upstream one and it
would be nice if somebody having it could send the bug to the developers
of the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 397267] Re: No weather information in gnome panel

2010-01-31 Thread Philippe Gauthier
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be
reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the
development release - Lucid Lynx. It would help us greatly if you could
test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of
Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your
help.

[Bug 512294] Re: weather changes width

2010-01-31 Thread Philippe Gauthier
To reproduce this bug:
- Make sure the clock applet is as right to the screen as possible.
- Add a location which is one day forward from your "home" location. The text
of the time will be longer because of the additional week day.
- Open the clock menu and over the mouse over the location. The "Set..." button
will appear right of the text, possibly extending beyond the right edge of the
screen.

[Bug 373268] Re: Can't choose the exact timezone location in Argentina

2010-01-31 Thread Philippe Gauthier
The tracking of the daylight saving time is done automatically by the
tzdata package. In the clock applet, you only choose the time zone
identifier. If the time is wrong, please file a new bug against the
tzdata package.

The weather is obtained from the location (city) you choose. If you set
a location to Mendoza, you will get the correct weather, regardless of
the time zone. The time zone is just guessed from the geographical
coordinates of the city. If a necessary major city (more than 100 000
habitants) is missing, please file a different bug :-)

Finally, it would be nice if you could send the bug to the developers of
the software by following the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/GNOME. If you have done so, please
tell us the number of the upstream bug (or the link), so we can add a
bugwatch that will inform us about its status. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 344975] Re: Location Map Indicator Incorrect for IST (India)

2010-01-31 Thread Philippe Gauthier
The clock applet in Karmic no longer shows an icon if a location is set
with no city (just a time zone, like described in previous comment). I
guess that in Intrepid, the icon is displayed at coordinates 0.00, 0.00.

I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest stable
version of Ubuntu. If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of
