[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-26 Thread Imre Gergely
@Pietro Battiston: I don't think you can be 100% sure that Debian (or
any other distro) won't do something in the future you will dislike...

Tech people think that non-techies (your grandmother) will ZOMG what
happened to the buttons. Just try to explain that she has to click on
the left now to close the windows and not on the right, and she'll get
it in notime and forget about it. I have non-tech parents, too, with
Ubuntu installed at home, and grandparents who learned how to use a
mobile (at their age).

It's just us who are "too aware" about these things (us, who read these
bugreports and comment way too much on them). Your grandma will probably
think, "ummm there's no button here... but there! on the other side,
that looks the same, let's click it and see what happens. Tadda!" She
won't care, they've changed it, ok, she'll get used to it. If she can
use a computer, she will figure it out.

It's still easier than Ctrl+W, Ctrl+Q, Alt+F4 or File/Quit ;)

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-03-26 Thread Imre Gergely
So maybe the first category of data should be: what percentage of the
Ubuntu user base cares/notices/is pissed about this change. From ALL the
users who use Ubuntu desktop. Because it aims to be for everyone not
just for tech-savvy people, right?

Go upgrade to beta at your parents/grandparents/friends, point out the
changes and call them again in a week, see if anybody had any problems.
For the ones who call you first, you can revert back to the old
settings. If nobody complains but you, it's a sign that YOU care too
much about it ;)

I would rather b*tch about why there's 500-600MB of RAM used up
after booting in Gnome, without any programs open, than button
placing.

[Bug 399974] Re: 'Keep Aligned' option always resets to 'true' after desktop reload

2010-01-08 Thread Imre Gergely
+1 on the 'Keep Aligned' problem on Karmic 64bit, just to keep the list
long ;)

One thing I noticed: it DOESN'T rearrange the icons if I press F5, it
just rechecks that option. Neither does relogging change the icons
arrangement on the Desktop.

- login, uncheck 'Keep Aligned'
- arrange icons the way I want to
- press F5, option 'Keep Aligned' gets checked BUT icons stay in place
- uncheck option again, I can arrange the icons again the way I want, no
restrictions
- logout/login, option is checked, but icons still remain the way I left them

ONLY when I actually CHECK the 'Keep Aligned' option, only then are the
icons arranged.

To further complicate things:

- after checking the option, icons get rearranged (they are aligned)
- unchecking AND pressing F5 brings the icons back to their original position
(not arranged)

Maybe it's just me, or is this not THAT annoying as people say ? Just
uncheck the box arrange stuff how you want it, the forget about being
checked or not. Next time you have to arrange something, just uncheck
the option. I repeat, it's not re-arranging anything by pressing F5 or
relogging.

[Bug 110899] Re: workspace-switcher needs to work with dualhead setup

2008-11-02 Thread Imre Gergely
I can't really add anything new, just confirm that on 8.04 with a Nvidia
7600GS, two separate screens on two monitors.

There is one other thing I observed. It seems when there are two
workspace switchers with separate configs (for example one showing the
workspaces in two rows, and the other one in one row), it seems to be
working just fine. Only when the two configurations are the same it gets
messed up (ie. the switcher on screen0 controls everything, and the
other switcher controls nothing).

I have set up some shortcuts to change the workspaces (like Ctrl+1,
Ctrl+2...), so i'm actually not clicking on any switcher, i'm just using
the shortcuts, it still has the same problem described above.

I looked at gconf, and did a search for workspace_switcher but i can't
find anything with screen0 OR screen1, just plain workspace_switcher. I
tried removing and re-adding both switchers, but the same thing happens.
