Franciscovega's bug seems unrelated and happens earlier than the error
message in this bug. Also there is no segmentation fault. Xrandr plugin
just causes above mentioned errors.

Looking at the strace output right before the messages...

[Bug 640807] [NEW] Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-16 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Starting with version 2.31.91-0ubuntu2, my CRT monitor starts with a
refresh rate of 60 Hz (overriding the 75 Hz set in xorg.conf). Using
nvidia-settings to manually set it back to 75 Hz works, but after
restarting gnome-settings-daemon it's back to 60 Hz.

Running g-s-d with --debug shows following when starting the xrandr

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-17 Thread Hernando Torque
Ok, so this seems to have been triggered by the change in defaults in
version 2.31.91-0ubuntu3 (turn on ext. monitors).

Setting
'apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup'
to false for the user gdm made this bug go away in the current version.
That key has been introduced with version 2.31.91-0ubuntu1:
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/maverick/gnome-
settings-daemon/maverick/revision/109/plugins/xrandr/gsd-xrandr-
manager.c#plugins/xrandr/gsd-xrandr-manager.c

>From the ways to get the value for 'config' in the method
'apply_default_boot_configuration', only  'config = make_laptop_setup
(screen);' seems to work (= as soon as enabling
turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup, I see the 60 Hz).
'make_clone_setup' and 'make_other_setup' will call
'gnome_rr_mode_get_freq' at some point, which will return bogus because
my monitor's EDID is invalid.

$ xrandr -q
xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 175, current 1280 x 1024, maximum 1280 x 1024
default connected 1280x1024+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1280x1024  50.0*51.0 53.0

---

Due to all the patches I'm not sure if that's an upstream bug. This
should affect all users that have a monitor without EDID (got to be an
old one) or invalid EDID (have seen a couple of models on the video
driver section of the freedesktop bug tracker).

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-28 Thread Hernando Torque
I forgot, you also need to disable this option for the user ('sudo -u
gdm' will only deal with the gdm login screen):

gconftool-2 --type bool -s
"/apps/gnome_settings_daemon/xrandr/turn_on_external_monitors_at_startup"
false

I guess the easiest way to find out if you are affected by this bug is,
to install the x11-xserver-utils package and run 'xrandr -q' - normally
this should list a proper mode - it doesn't in my case. You can also run
'sudo get-edid' from the read-edid package - if it fails, you'll likely
hit this bug.

[Bug 640807] Re: Forces low refresh rate on CRT monitor

2010-09-28 Thread Hernando Torque
Nothing new in the log. I too think that g-s-d isn't the problem but
rather triggering the behavior.

Thing is, without a xorg.conf I only can chose between low/safe
resolutions. With Nvidia's BLOB it's enough to add horizontal and
vertical refresh rates, with Nouveau I also need to provide a modeline.
Xrandr/X (or however 'gnome_rr_mode_get_freq' from gnome-desktop gets
the info) seems to only rely on the monitor's EDID.

Yes, it's still an issue on my two testing systems (also confirmed with
a current daily live CD). I don't have any custom gnome-terminal
keybindings and the value of '/apps/gnome-

[Bug 546583] [NEW] Drags the wrong window

2010-03-24 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: metacity

If I try to drag a window that overlays a previously maximized window,
the maximized window will be picked instead.

This happens with nvidia-current (not with Nouveau), 'Appearance
Preferences > Visual Effects' set to 'None', and only if the other
window was maximized using a double click on its title bar (using the
maximize button won't trigger the bug).

Steps to reproduce (doesn't matter which programs you use):

1.) Open Nautilus (make sure it's not maximized)
2.) Double click on the title bar to maximize it (don't use the window button)
3.) Start gnome-terminal
4.) Try to drag the terminal around

=> You should be dragging Nautilus instead.

Metacity was my best guess, sorry if that's wrong.

To reproduce, just reinstall one of the xfonts-packages like xfonts-base

This will also trigger bug #507263 (

[Bug 387912] [NEW] gdk_x11_xatom_to_atom_for_display: assertion `xatom != None' failed

2009-06-16 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

~/.xsession-errors is filled with following error message:

Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_x11_xatom_to_atom_for_display: assertion `xatom !=

According to this package's changelog this should already be fixed
(upstream bug 580511: http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=580511),
but it doesn't seem fixed (used the small programm provided by Martin

[Bug 389686] Re: compiz --replace fails to kill metacity, resulting in cpu overload

2009-06-27 Thread Hernando Torque
I can confirm this using a Nvidia 6600 GT with Nvidia 185.18.14 drivers.

*) Starting compiz via fusion-icon in the startup applications causes
100% CPU load. Killing either compiz.real or metacity reduces CPU load
back to normal.

*) Starting compiz manually after session start with 'compiz --replace'
causes 100% CPU load. Killing either compiz.real or metacity reduces CPU
load back to normal.

*) After restarting metacity with 'metacity --replace' I can start
compiz with 'compiz --replace' without high CPU load.

In my case the high CPU load is caused by gconfd-2, which continuously
writes to ~/.gconfd/saved_state

Maybe a duplicate or connected:

[Bug 389686] Re: compiz --replace fails to kill metacity, resulting in cpu overload

2009-06-27 Thread Hernando Torque
Ok, this gconfd-2 thing seems to be the result of 'compiz --replace'
starting a loop that triggers this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/metacity/+bug/150721

Addition to above points:

*) Starting compiz via setting 'Visual Effects' to 'Normal' in
'Appearance Preferences' (and removing all other compiz/fusion-icon
autostart entries) works fine. That's why I couldn't reproduce the
problem with a new user - 'Normal' is default and compiz was already
running.

[Bug 395591] [NEW] Installing GDM 2.26 doesn't update /etc/X11/default-display-manager

Opposed to KDM and XDM, GDM doesn't update the file /etc/X11/default-
display-manager (or creates it if missing), so I have to manually change

Are you sure you didn't delete the gdm.conf-custom file manually?

I cannot confirm this bug:

*) Purged GDM 2.26 (including all GDM related files a file search returned)
*) Installed GDM 2.20.10-0ubuntu5, /etc/gdm contained the (empty)
gdm.conf-custom
*) Used gdmsetup to enable autologin, gdm.conf-custom contained the relevant
information
*) Upgraded to GDM 2.26.1-0ubuntu2 - gdm.conf-custom still was there holding

2009-07-05 Thread Hernando Torque
After reading the documentation
(http://library.gnome.org/admin/gdm/stable/configuration.html.en) it's
in fact custom.conf that should be used to config GDM. I suggest
renaming the bug to something like "gdm 2.26 wrong configuration file
used".

[Bug 395861] Re: gdm 2.26 custom configuration file: wrong filename

2009-07-06 Thread Hernando Torque
Issue #1: Upgrading from 2.20 to 2.26 leaves you with two configuration
files. Pretty confusing I'd say - especially because you have to
manually configure GDM since there is no graphical tool (yet?) to do it.

Issue #2: Fresh installations just install 'custom.conf', which isn't
used (yet?) by GDM. Again, if you want to configure GDM you'd probably
put the information into that file rather than creating a new file
called 'gdm.conf-custom' (which IS used by GDM).

Downloaded the above linked file (4.2GB). When opening the containing

unresponsive. I've waited half an hour before killing it.

I think you meant file-roller and not gedit?

A. Opening a compressed file via terminal: file-roller /url/to/compressed/file
=> warning in ~/.xsession-errors
B. Opening a compressed file via gnome-open (terminal or started via a web
browser): gnome-open /url/to/compressed/file => warning in ~/.xsession-errors
C. Double-Click on a compressed file => no warning in ~/.xsession-errors

[Bug 329028] [NEW] gnome-keybinding-properties: Cannot edit examples for custom keybindings

2009-02-13 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In gnome-keybinding-properties I have three disabled keybindings under "Custom
Shortcuts":
1. "binding" - Disabled starts gconftool-2 --toggle
/desktop/gnome/applications/at/screen_magnifier_enabled
2. "binding" - Disabled starts gconftool-2 --toggle
/desktop/gnome/applications/at/screen_reader_enabled
3. "binding" - Disabled starts gconftool-2 --toggle
/desktop/gnome/applications/at/screen_keyboard_enabled

While I can change the names of the entries, their commands cannot be
changed (won't be saved). Maybe they should not be placed in "Custom
Shortcuts" - without a proper name they are easy to confuse with
editable examples.

[Bug 329028] Re: gnome-keybinding-properties: Cannot edit examples for custom keybindings

2009-02-19 Thread Hernando Torque
Reproducible with today's live CD.

1. Open System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts.
2. Under "Custom Shortcuts" there are three disabled shortcuts (just called
"binding").
3. Change the command of one of the three entries, close "Keyboard Shortcuts",
reopen.
4. The initial command will be there again.

~/.xsession-errors shows related warnings:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:5701): WARNING **: Key binding (magnifier) is invalid
** (gnome-settings-daemon:5701): WARNING **: Key binding (screenreader) is

[Bug 329028] Re: gnome-keybinding-properties: Cannot edit examples for custom keybindings

2009-02-19 Thread Hernando Torque
Seems to be two issues:

1. Every custom shortcut that's disabled will fail to parse as valid
binding in gsd-keybindings-manager.c and therefor throw this warning (to
reproduce add a shortcut, restart GDM, look in ~/.xsession-errors).

2. The command of a custom shortcut can't be changed - it's not limited
to those three at-shortcuts (to reproduce add a shortcut, close gnome-
keybinding-properties, reopen, edit the command field of the added
shortcut, close gnome-keybinding-properties, reopen - initial command is
there again).

[Bug 318689] Re: gnome-system-log attempts to open bogus/inexistent logfiles

2009-02-20 Thread Hernando Torque
How can I get rid of gnome-system-log in gconf? Uninstalling (and
purging) gnome-utils didn't fix it.

I think you just need to check the existence of default_logfiles[i] in
logview_prefs_fill_defaults (I did it with fopen - maybe overkill?) but
as long as I have the gconf entry present it's not creating the initial
logfile list and I cannot test if it works.

[Bug 282199] [NEW] New logout/shut down dialogs not showing after upgrade from Hardy

2008-10-12 Thread Hernando Torque
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

In Hardy I was using the compact upstream dialogs for shut down and logout:
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/1803/bildschirmfotognomepanekk5.png

I enabled them by creating the gconf key upstream_session in
apps/panel/global and setting it to true.

After upgrading to Intrepid this key has gone and there is no schema
either (so recreating it won't change a thing) but the "old" dialogs are
still showing.

Using a Live-CD fixes the problem so maybe it's an upgrade related bug.

Right package maybe gnome-session, didn't know.

[Bug 384439] Re: GLib-CRITICAL **: g_propagate_error: assertion `src != NULL' failed

2009-07-27 Thread Hernando Torque
The error is caused by the patch 100_load_desired_settings.patch by
adding:

/* return NULL if the file doesn't exist */
if (!g_file_test (filename, G_FILE_TEST_EXISTS))
{
result = NULL;

return result;
}

to the function configurations_read_from_file() in libgnome-desktop
/gnome-rr-config.c, because it leaves the error passed to the function
uninitialized which later causes the error in gnome-settings-deamon's
xrandr-plugin (gsd-xrandr-manager.c, function
apply_configuration_from_filename()).

Removing that part makes the errors go away but for sure that's not a
proper fix. No patch attached since I don't know how useful patching a
patch is...

[Bug 409086] [NEW] Disable touchpad while typing: make time configurable via gconf-key

When the option disable-while-typing is enabled, you currently have to
