[Bug 47260] Re: Distributor icon is ugly

2006-05-29 Thread Donald
The box emphasises that the logo is not just a logo but you can actually press
it. Therefore i like it. It could be further to the left though.
I am quite happy how the four easy to reach edges of the desktop are used with
dapper.

This error also exist in the "System->Help and Support". Seems the
problem is related to the Help program.

Futhermore, if Firefox is not already running, clicking an external link
in the Help program will not return, resulting in a frozen Help window.

[Bug 1798888] [NEW] Displays shows only one display

2018-10-19 Thread Donald Gordon
Public bug reported:

Upon upgrading from 18.04 to 18.10, only one of my displays is working.

Only one display shows in control centre. I have two, one connected via
DisplayPort, one via VGA.

The VGA works, DP doesn't.

If I unplug the VGA display, then the DisplayPort display turns on.
Plug it back in, the DisplayPort display turns off.

XRANDR shows both displays. Confusingly, the VGA display appears as
"DP-2" in XRANDR, and the DisplayPort connected display shows as
"HDMI-1."

If I manually enable the second display with

xrandr --output HDMI-1 --right-of DP-2 --mode 1920x1080

then the second display starts to work, and it appears in the Displays
section of the control centre, as it used to in Ubuntu 18.04.

Here's the output of xrandr prior to manually enabling the second
display:

[Bug 1816896] [NEW] Laptop (HP EliteBook 9470m, Ivy Bridge) unresponsive after resume

2019-02-20 Thread Donald Gordon
Public bug reported:

This problem is new in Ubuntu 18.10; it did not occur with 18.04.

When my laptop, an HP EliteBook 9470m, with Intel Ivy Bridge graphics,
comes out of resume, often the UI is unresponsive. Typically I get a
black screen, a screen with just the GNOME top bar, or what the screen
was showing before the laptop was suspended. The mouse cursor moves but
the UI is unresponsive to input.

If I switch VTs with Ctrl+Alt+F1, the lock screen shows, I can enter my
password and after that my GUI session begins to work again, where I
left off.

The problem appears to increase in frequency when I add external
monitors.

It occurs on every suspend/resume if one or more external monitors
(DisplayPort or VGA) have been used since the laptop was booted, even if
they were present at boot, or subsequently removed.

If an extra monitor was plugged in while the laptop was turned off
(scenario: come home, put laptop in docking station with extra monitor
attached, turn on) then often the UI will still fail to respond after
switching to the lock screen with Ctrl+Alt+F1 and I will need to reboot
the laptop.

[Bug 1710383] [NEW] Could not install 'gconf2' and upgrade frozen

2017-08-12 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

When performing a distribution upgrade from Ubuntu 16.04.3 xenial to
17.04, a dialog is generated with the following messages:

Could not install 'gconf2'
The upgrade will continue but the 'gconf2' package may not be in a working
state. Please consider submitting a bug report about it.

The dialog has a Close button. Clicking it closes the dialog but it then
reappears again immediately. It is stuck in a loop.

The distribution upgrade dialog continues in the background for a while.
However, it then freeze having last reported "Configuring libpam-systemd

[Bug 1710383] Re: Could not install 'gconf2' and upgrade frozen

2017-08-12 Thread Donald Pellegrino
This is a critical bug. It led to a path requiring a clean install of
Ubuntu and a restore of user data from backups. The upgrade was
ultimately unrecoverable even when booting to a Live USB stick to
continue the upgrade.

[Bug 1741908] [NEW] Calendar Month View Appointment mouse-over context window disappears

2018-01-08 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

In the Calendar Month View of the Evolution user interface, Appointments
are drawn within the day blocks. They begin with the time and the
beginning of the Appointment Summary. When the mouse is moved on top of
the Appointment rectangle, a content window is drawn to show additional
details. However, the context window display amounts to a flicker as it

[Bug 1741948] [NEW] Evolution ignores tile window commands in GNOME

2018-01-08 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

As per the Help "Ubuntu Desktop Guide -> Desktop -> Applications and
windows -> Windows and workspaces -> Windows" documentation for "Tile
windows:"

"To maximize a window along a side of the screen, grab the titlebar and
drag it to the left or right side until half of the screen is
highlighted. Using the keyboard, hold down Super and press the Left or
Right key."

When the Evolution main window has focus, the Super + Left and Super +
Right commands are ignored. Additionally, it does not snap to the left
or right when the titlebar is grabbed and dragged to either side of the
screen.

All other GNOME apps do behave as expected. Testing was done with a
GNOME/Xorg session.

[Bug 1745619] [NEW] Failed to open local calendar with "Timeout was reached"

2018-01-26 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

After booting into a GNOME session, Evolution was started. Mail appeared
as expected. When the Calendar section was opened, none of the calendars
opened including the local calendar. A blue report was printed under the
toolbar with the error that it could not open the local calendar as
"Timeout was reached." It seems odd that there should be a timeout issue
when accessing local data. The local calendar is stored on the save
drive and mount point as the OS and Evolution.

[Bug 1587189] [NEW] progress hangs at half when installing updates

2016-05-30 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Software was run manually. The Updates tab was selected and one
update was reported. The item was OS Update. The button was clicked to
install the update.

The expected behavior was that installation should proceed consistently
to 100%.

The observed behavior is that the button label changes to Installing and
the button progress bar progresses to about 50%. At 50% the progress
stops and it just sits there without any other visible output to the X
session. The Ubuntu Software application is still responsive. It is
possible to select the All and Installed tabs and the display will
update as expected. However, the Updates tab remains stuck on 50%.

[Bug 1594035] [NEW] unable to shut down the system after suspend / resume

2016-06-18 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

In the case of a system that has gone through a suspend / resume cycle,
the "shutdown now" command fails with the following output:

$ shutdown now
Failed to power off system via logind: Transaction is destructive.
Failed to start poweroff.target: Interactive authentication required.
See system logs and 'systemctl status poweroff.target' for details.
Failed to open /dev/initctl: Permission denied
Failed to talk to init daemon.

---

$ systemctl status poweroff.target
â—Ź poweroff.target - Power-Off
Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/poweroff.target; disabled; vendor preset:
   Active: inactive (dead)
 Docs: man:systemd.special(7)

---

$ systemctl list-jobs
JOB UNIT TYPE STATE
438 dev-mapper-cryptswap1.device start running
439 dev-mapper-cryptswap1.swapstart waiting
436 systemd-cryptsetup@cryptswap1.service start running

3 jobs listed.

---

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot system
2. User login to graphical session
3. Close lid while on battery power triggering a suspend
4. Open lid while on battery power triggering a resume
5. Run "shutdown now" from a terminal. Note that the command must be run from
the terminal to see output. Selecting "Shut Down..." from the system menu in
the menu bar will hide the error output.
6. Observe that the system fails to shut down

Expected behavior:

At step 6, the system should shut down gracefully.

Note that the shutdown process works as expected if steps 3 and 4 are
skipped. I suspect that something about the suspend / resume cycle
during the session has an interaction effect with the shutdown process,
preventing it from executing correctly.

[Bug 1594641] [NEW] removing swap partition does not remove entry from /etc/fstab

2016-06-20 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

I used gnome-disk-utility to deactivate the swap partition. I then used
it to delete the swap partition. Both operations seem to have worked in
gnome-disk-utility however it is not clear that the free space size
increased correspondingly. The entry for the swap partition in
/etc/fstab remained and still pointed to the partition that was deleted
in gnome-disk-utility.

The expected behavior is that when a swap partition is deleted in gnome-
disk-utility the corresponding /etc/fstab entry should also be removed.

[Bug 486154] Re: System beep broken in Karmic despite heroic efforts to fix it

2009-12-22 Thread Donald Allwright
I am interested in getting the sound from a proprietary video
conferencing tool to come out of the PC speakers (it uses pulse audio).
Having tried manually modprobing pcspkr to no avail I have noticed that
when logged into KDE it works fine, but when in Gnome it doesn't work.
This suggests the problem is nothing to do with the system bell at all,
which in fact does work fine in Gnome.

[Bug 320873] [NEW] CUPS update breaks Evince printing to SMB printer(s)

2009-01-24 Thread Donald Church
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evince

After recent updates to CUPS, I lost the ability to print from Evince to
a printer installed on a Windows 200 machine via Samba support in CUPS.
Error message reads "too many failed attempts" Oddly, once in a great
many attempts the print works but seemingly without a pattern. No
discernible errors in logs that I can tell. Other applications print
correctly such as Acroread and OOo apps.

[Bug 295267] [NEW] Multiple entries in 'Open With' and 'Open With Other Application'

2008-11-07 Thread Donald Broatch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

Recently when I right clicked on a media file there were two entries for
VLC in the menu which appeared (only one of which worked).

When I selected the 'Open With Other Application', there were seven
instances of VLC, only one of which worked (the others said 'Could not
find 'wxvlc').

There were also three instances of Text Editor, and two of Amarok and
Firefox.

Thanks to some help I got at the Ubuntu forum, I managed to remove the
duplicate entry from 'Open With', but the multiple entries for various
programs remain in 'Open With Other Application'.

It seems that when some programs are updated, an entry in 'Open With
Other Application' and (in the case of VLC) 'Open With' is duplicated.

Ubuntu 8.10 (Updated 7.10>8.04)
Nautilus 1:2.24.1

[Bug 296027] [NEW] Brasero reports it is 'fixating'

2008-11-09 Thread Donald Broatch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: brasero

In British English, the word has only a rather inappropriate and comic
meaning in this context:

to direct (the libido) toward an infantile form of gratification
to focus or concentrate one's gaze or attention intently or obsessively
to undergo arrestment at a stage of development

It seems the word can have the desired meaning in American English, but
only as a Transitive verb:

transitive verb1 : to make fixed, stationary, or unchanging

I believe Windows says something like 'finalising the disk'. 'Fixating
the disk' might be OK in AE (I don't know, I'm British), but 'fixating'
raises a gigle every time I see it.

[Bug 772486] Re: [Natty] Unity will start from GDM, not from KDM

2011-06-08 Thread Donald Thompson
I did some more playing around with this and I found my GDMSESSION
variable is set to "default". If I add:

export GDMSESSION="$DESKTOP_SESSION"

if [ "$GDMSESSION" = "default" ] ; then
export GDMSESSION=gnome
fi

then Unity will start correctly. It doesn't seem to cause any problems if the
session type is changed prior to login either.
I'm not sure why just 'export GDMSESSION="$DESKTOP_SESSION"' doesn't work for
me, but I've tested this over several 11.04 x86_64 installs now using a clean
(no data/config in the $HOME directory) account.

[Bug 659013] [NEW] nautilus uses >100% cpu when writing DVD

2010-10-12 Thread Donald Gordon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I put a blank DVD in my USB DVD writer and when the prompt came up, said
I wanted to create a new DVD. I dragged files into the window and
started the burn.

During the burn process, only during the part where the files are
written (so not during finalization etc) one of my CPU cores was pegged
at maximum frequency, and top said the "nautilus" process was using
>100% CPU (I saw up to 114%).

My PC is a 3.4GHz Quad Core so there's no good reason for nautilus to
use all of one core.

I'm running Maverick, amd64, nautilus package version is
1:2.32.0-0ubuntu1.

[Bug 659013] Re: nautilus uses >100% cpu when writing DVD

2010-10-15 Thread Donald Gordon
OK. .xsession-errors attached; it's rather long but there are some
brasero bits in the middle.

The burn succeeded, nautilus appeared to be acting normally, if I hadn't
noticed one of my cores rev up to 100% I wouldn't have known anything
was going wrong.

same version of the nautilus package.

Scratch that, burnt another DVD, CPU usage was high again. This time
burn was done with an internal SATA burner rather than the USB burner I
used for the other burns described earlier.

[Bug 674707] [NEW] Little Mermaid 2 DVD won't play - "Could not read from resource"

2010-11-12 Thread donald dickerson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Ubuntu 10.10
Totem Movie Player 2.32.0
The dvd is obviously recognized as present in the drive, because it shows under
"Places" as "LITTLE MERMAID_2". When I click on it, it shows two file folders:
AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS along with a button that says, "Open Movie Player". When
I click the button, the Totem Movie Player opens and I get:
"Could not read from resource."

Anybody have any ideas how to proceed?

[Bug 658675] Re: Turn off Bluetooth also turns off wifi

2011-12-31 Thread Donald Lhoëst
Problem is still present. I'm using a Dell Inspiron 14z with a clean
install of Ubuntu 11.10 and Gnome3.

Turning off Bluetooth puts the computer into "Flight Mode" and therefore
shuts Wifi down. The only way to connect back is to turn the flight mode
off, turning Bluetooth on and only then wifi.

[Bug 518230] Re: Some PDF forms don't save entered information

2010-04-14 Thread Donald Henry
Donald Henry wrote on 2010-04-14

My IRS Form 1040A appeared as a print preview of the actual document to
send to the IRS. But neither printing it nor saving it on my computer
and printer cannot be done. I already know that printing to paper and to
file cannot be done from previous experience. So, once this problem
report is complete and sent the developers, I will attempt to
troubleshoot that issue using a technique sent to me by a Ubuntu
volunteer (engineer?). External to this issue is that the IRS electronic
forms program known as FreeFile produced by a contractor has yet to
reveal to me how to e-file my completed tax return to the IRS. It seems
to me that completing a simple tax return by pen on a paper IRS form and
mailing it via USPS is a lot easier than doing it via computer and
electronic filing over telecommunications lines. A lesson here for all
of us is that using a computer to prepare and print/save/file/send
anything one time takes much longer to learn and perform than doing it
by pre-computer hand method. Tax return programs, for example, are only
useful for persons who have no arithmetic ability and/or have a need for
the program to interpret the tax code and fill in a space on a form for
an uneducated taxpayer. That is not an issue with Linux Ubuntu, I will
admit, but I am spending a lot of time using this platform after
recently have been persuaded that Linux Ubuntu is better that Windows
XP. ( as wll as learning how to complete a simple form according to a
government contractor's computerized program.)

[Bug 674707] Re: Little Mermaid 2 DVD won't play - "Could not read from resource"

2010-11-14 Thread donald dickerson
I installed the ubuntu-restricted-extras. This had no effect.

The VLC player has the same problem. The dvd drive works, and I can see
the file folders and files on the dvd, but when I try to play one, it
won't play them.

I tried other DVD's in the drive. A friend's DVD, Red Versus Blue,
which is a non-copyrighted dvd, played fine. However, "The Patriot" had
the same problem.

This makes me think it has something to do with copyright protection.

[Bug 544847] Re: cant browse/mount windows shares in nautilus 10.04

2010-07-04 Thread Donald Canard
I did a clean installation of Lucid 10.04 a month or more ago. This
installation had and has no problems connecting to Windows shares. I
have not updated it.

I did another installation yesterday and patched it with all available
updates. This installation cannot connect to Windows shares. The
symptoms are identical those described above.

It seems some updates have broken interoperability with Windows.

A fix would be nice.

Thanks.

[Bug 573878] [NEW] suspend and hibernate both fail under Lynx using Presario V5000 laptop

2010-05-02 Thread Donald Calloway
Public bug reported:

I have a Compaq Presario V5000 laptop. I blank screen when I attempt to
suspend or hibernate. It looks like it successfully sleeps on suspend,
but my laptop doesn't wake up, and I have to do a hard reboot. When I
reboot after an unsuccessful suspend, I must Enable Networking as well.

When I attempt to hibernate I also get a blank screen and my PC doesn't
hibernate. I must hard reboot to restore the system.

I love Ubuntu very much and wish these two features worked as they are
supposed to work.

[Bug 86282] Theme previews go away after installing new widget themes

2007-02-19 Thread Donald Straney
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

In GNOME's theme switcher (GNOME Control Center version
2.16.1-0ubuntu4), the theme previews change to question marks after I
install two widget themes in a row by dragging the .tar.gz files to the
theme list. When prompted to switch to the new theme or keep the
current theme, I always choose to keep the current theme, and the
previews are shown as normal again after I close the theme switcher and
re-open it. I've been able to reproduce this every time, and it doesn't
happen with icon themes - when I install two widget themes in a row, the
previews go away after the second one is installed, but when I install
an icon-only theme and then a widget theme, nothing happens until I
install another widget theme. In case it matters, the theme I used
while installing these was Mist, and there were no third-party themes
installed in ~/.themes. If it would help, I could attach a tarball of
the exact themes I was installing.

** Affects: control-center (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Unconfirmed

[Bug 86282] Re: Theme previews go away after installing new widget themes

2007-02-20 Thread Donald Straney
Sorry, I probably should've tried the latest version first. I've
attached a few of the themes I used - the "MacOSX" one is the icon-only
theme, "Aero" has a full GNOME theme with widgets and window borders,
and all the others are widget-only themes. I got all of these from
websites like art.gnome.org or gnome-look.org, so there shouldn't be any
legal issues with posting them here.

What I meant is that all the previews in the main theme list (with the

[Bug 2047579] Re: gnome-software unuable to install updates (Prepared update not found)

2023-12-31 Thread Donald in Canberra
Use synaptic and search on "update-manager". I found three packages including
update-manager requiring an upgrade from 1:22.04.10 to 1:22.04.17. I marked the
3 packages for upgrade and applied changes.
I then opened Gnome Software again and refreshed updates. The problem was fixed.

[Bug 245716] Re: file-roller puts temporary files in the home dir instead of /tmp

2017-07-17 Thread Donald Dwane Ross
I Deleted the ~/.cache/.fr-* files and saved 117GB on a 480GB SSD drive. My
system had gone down with less than 500mb in free space after the last view zip
file crash and my system would no longer let me log in to my main account
(Constant re login attempts). I had to use the log in for fixing the system at
the startup prompt and the system came up to Debian not Ubuntu 16.10. I
Timeshifted back 2 days to get back to Ubuntu.
May need to look for a different file archive program, this is a big drive
eater after a crash.

[Bug 887821] Re: "Show copy dialog" right click launcher entry doesn't work (on nautilus copy)

2016-07-09 Thread Donald A. Dade
I too see the same thing on Ubuntu 16.04. Using the Show Copy Dialog
doesn't help because it just brings up another instance of Nautilus, not
the copy dialog. Alt-Tab cycles through that, not the copy dialog.

[Bug 60438] Changing Screen Saver locks up entire system

2006-10-11 Thread Donald E. Smith
Public bug reported:

Latest version Ubuntu (kernel update this morning!). Selecting the first
offered screen saver below the 'line' after 'Random' (apparently not
there?) manages to change the preference but shoots the GUI in the head.
Powering off & rebooting... going back to System/Preferences/Screen
Saver/ will again lock'er up solid. Too new to find this yet,
directions appreciated.

Re: [Bug 60438] Re: Changing Screen Saver locks up entire system

2006-10-19 Thread Donald E. Smith
Hello from Pensacola FL,

Radeon 9700 Pro, and running hypertorus manually works fine. (Nice
looking too! & Now I have some better troubleshooting knowledge). Any
individual Screensaver selected (below Random) locks me up. Have to
reboot & go into the (finally found) Configuration Editor to reset the
selection to Blank or Random, or the system will also lockup when the
screensaver operates on time. (I was beginning to think only the system
could select individual screensavers and the list was just to let you
know what would show up Randomly!)

Thanks for your bug report. The first one on the list, do you mean the "4D
Hypertorus" ?
  >From bug #58963:
This could be a problem with some 3D screensavers taking down your machine.
It is probably nothing wrong with gnome-screensaver itself, but your video
drivers. What kind of hardware (esp. graphic card) do you have?

Can you please try running "/usr/lib/xscreensaver/hypertorus" in a
Terminal window, and see if it crashes your machine?

2006-10-20 Thread Donald E. Smith
No Deco doens't crash.

Sent Xorg.0.log.old as attachment this afternoon in reply to your
pervious message together with error reflected in terminal from trying
antspotlight that locked system. Message bounced, took as
acknolegement. And I see that message posted @ bug report. Also sent
Harware Manager images, syslog, & previous Xorg.0.log.old earlier, no
indication of this message at all? Attachments are being stripped?
Some messages get through some don't? Advise how to get these to you as
this work is typically deleted after sending and will now have to be
repeated.

Does Deco crash? And we are still waiting for that
  /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old :)

Re: [Bug 60438] Re: Changing Screen Saver locks up entire system

2006-10-20 Thread Donald E. Smith
OK, as per instructed just after rebooting from crash (don't see any
Error messages in syslog) here's the other.

I ran antspotlight in the Terminal and got this there...

***WARN ONCE**
file r300_state.c function r300Enable line 456
TODO - double side stencil!
**
no ctx->FragmentProgram._Current!!
***WARN ONCE**
file r300_render.C function r300_get_num_verts line 193
user error: 33 is not a valid number of vericles for primitive QS!
***

As best jotted down by hand, system was locked (mouse moves!).

And thinking gee, if Random means getting one that can crash the system
I'll just set it to hypertorus which worked. I did, and it was looking
good in the sample display (thumbnail, whatever you call it). Then it
stopped moving and had locked up as I said originally. Just took a
while this time!

Hope this helps? DES

Does for instance "Deco" also crash ? (One surely without 3D graphics).
Can you please look through /var/log/syslog to see if there were any
error messages? Please attach /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old just after
  rebooting from the crash.

2006-10-21 Thread Donald E. Smith
OK... here's that log, just after locking up with antspotlight as above.
(I only have to switch back to WinXP and log in here in IE! As FF won't
log in in either OS? A bit rediculous, but whatever.)

And you'd ask about hardware earlier. Here's an image from the WIndow's
Device Manager. All this is hooked to an Asus P4T533C MB.
