[Bug 653443] [NEW] Corrupt graphics after bootsplash on dell inspiron 600m

2010-10-02 Thread DancemasterGlenn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

Hi there. I'm trying my best to file this properly, and I hope the
report can help pinpoint the issue I'm having. Part of this is a repost
from the SO INCREDIBLY HELPFUL Launchpad-Answers Ubuntu section, but I
have some more information now and feel better about posting an official
bug. Here goes:

"Hey everyone. I've been using Ubuntu since Dapper, and for the most
part it's been great times. My desktop computer is totally solid, even
while running the Maverick beta. However, I've run into a large issue
trying to get the current Maverick build running on my old laptop. The
device in question is a Dell Inspiron 600M (got it from someone who
didn't want it anymore). I had it running Lucid with no huge issues, but
I wanted to take advantage of the nicer theme and upgrades to the
package repos. I wouldn't have bothered this early, but as I said, it's
been running nicely on my desktop. As such, I seem to have hit a pretty
nasty bug/regression, and I'm wondering if anyone can help out. Here's
what I've got:

I installed the beta using the same cd I had made for my desktop.
Installation went through without an issue, and I was able to reboot
into my new desktop with no problem. However, after running update
manager to do a partial upgrade into the current state of Maverick, I'm
unable to get the computer to properly boot on restart. After the ubuntu
logo shows up, insead of going properly to the login screen I get a
strange graphic... basically a wall containing the purple/white-ish hues
of the login background, but thinly vertically striped (it would seem,
sort of hard to properly explain, as the stripes are the same color). If
I blindly hit enter, and enter my password, the screen goes a strange
pattern of grey (similar to the toolbars on the desktop). I couldn't get
it to properly do anything from here, except that once or twice I was
able to ctrl-alt-del and hit enter to shut down (so keyboard input is
working). It kinda sounds like part of whatever is on the screen (a
toolbar, for example) is being stretched through the whole screen, but
it doesn't look like a resolution issue. I tried reinstalling many, many
times (very tedious) in different fashions, to try and nail down what
might be the culprit..."

And I think I have! I've gone through over 400 packages, often updating
one at a time and then restarting to try and find which package is
giving me trouble, and it seems to be this one: upon installing gnome-
settings daemon on a Maverick Beta build and restarting, I'm getting the
graphical corruption again. I posted my issue on September 19th, so the
issue must have happened in an update to g-s-d between the publishing of
the beta iso (September 2nd) and then. If it helps, I've tried
installing the RC directly using that iso, and I get the same
corruption.

So... I dunno. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure this out, since
no one seemed interested in helping with the grunt-work. Is there
anything I can do to further nail down this bug? I'd really like to help
get it fixed before Maverick final comes out, assuming it isn't
something specific to my laptop specifically. I've run out of computers
to test, and my desktop is still running up-to-date Maverick perfectly.

Help?

[Bug 653443] Re: Corrupt graphics after bootsplash on dell inspiron 600m

2010-10-03 Thread DancemasterGlenn
I'd like to note that until bug #418809 is fixed, I can't run a partial
upgrade with this package pinned, as the pin will be ignored, and my
package updated anyway. If that bug were to be fixed, I could at least
conceivably work around this issue by keeping gnome-settings-daemon
permanently pinned... but it seems silly to have to employ such a
workaround. As silly as it sounds, I have two other friends with the
same laptop whom I can no longer recommend ubuntu to, since they simply
could not make use of the coming release in this state. I hope someone
will help me nail down this issue.

2010-10-05 Thread DancemasterGlenn
Well, that was weird. I was kinda hoping to hear something from...
anyone, but the most recent uploaded version of g-s-d (concerning a
basic rollback, if I understood correctly) fixes the issue neatly.
Thanks guys, you can close this... whenever you notice it?

Sorry, got my words mixed up: I tried a fresh install of Raring a year
ago, in the hopes that this was a cinnamon and/or Quantal issue. When it
made no difference I reinstalled cinnamon and continued on.

2013-12-19 Thread DancemasterGlenn
1) Yes, I have the same issue when running a clean install of ubuntu. It
was the first thing I tried when I installed quantal a year ago, in the
hopes that it was a cinnamon and/or raring issue. No dice. If it would
help at all information-wise I could run pactl through the unity
desktop? I have an image of Saucy I can boot from to try it if you think
it'll tell you more.

2) I don't specifically remember disabling my onboard audio card, but
perhaps I did? Anyway, I always have my Maudio card plugged in when I
boot up. Possible old news: If I boot up with it unplugged I can get
into the menu, but obviously that doesn't do me much good.

What can I try next?

[Bug 1131220] Re: [soundnua]: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in gvc_mixer_control_lookup_device_from_stream()

2014-01-01 Thread DancemasterGlenn
Well... bah. I guess we have a couple of options?

- you could walk me through installing debug symbols, whenever you have the
time. I'm sure it wouldn't be easy, but I'm game if you are.
- if there is some sort of changelog for gnome-control-center, we could still
look back through it to the time around when I filed my bug initially... the
sound menu definitely used to work with this card, so something roughly a year
ago must have broken compatibility for me. I just never really knew where to
look, or if it was specifically gnome-control-center I should be looking into.
- as a last-ditch option, i might be able to send you my interface... it would
suck to be without it, but if you thought having it would help diagnose the
problem and you cared enough to take a look, maybe it would be a good option?
Not sure where you live, so I don't know about shipping costs... I'm in eastern
massachusetts at the moment.

Anyway. Any of those things sound like a good plan?

[Bug 1131220] Re: [soundnua]: gnome-control-center crashed with SIGSEGV in gvc_mixer_control_lookup_device_from_stream()

2014-02-10 Thread DancemasterGlenn
Well, I'm embarrassed to say that updating to 13.10 just now fixed my
sound menu issue completely. I'm not sure why it persisted through my
last upgrade (to 13.04) and not this one, as both were clean installs.
The only thing I can think of is that last time I kept my Fast Track
plugged in during my ubuntu install, and this time I kept it unplugged
and plugged it in after I had installed and restarted. Perhaps the card
was autodetected in a strange way, or the OS install installed a driver
for it in a strange manner?

My only other explanation is that some package was changed in 13.10 and
not backported to 13.04... but that seems odd.

Anyway, I guess the matter is closed! Thank you David for your help on
trying to figure out my issue, and I apologize for wasting your time. I
appreciate what you did for me!

2013-11-07 Thread DancemasterGlenn
I'd really appreciate it! I'd sort of given up hope that I'd see my
sound menu on this system again. :( Because it used to work fine there's
a chance we could look at the related packages from the weeks
around/before my first post and see if any relevant changes stand out...
I'd like to do whatever I can to help.

The interface has multiple inputs, if that has any relevance? It can
take a quarter inch instrument cable as well as an XLR mic cable.
Possibly not related, but it does set it apart from some other
cards/interfaces.

I'd also certainly use a ppa, really whichever approach takes up less

I am still using 13.04 currently, yes. I certainly wouldn't mind a ppa,
but I'm able to use the command line and all if I were given the proper
steps to take. The above steps don't look too daunting, but I think I
would need a bit more direction if I'm to go the non-ppa route. Would a

Having done some research on applying patches, and not being exactly
sure where to get the source to apply this patch to (and not being
totally sure what program I'd be getting the source for, precisely), I
think that it would be really super if one of you are able to provide me
with a 13.04 ppa for testing. I hope that that's still an option, and I
hope you won't be too bummed that I wasn't able to make proper use of
the patch myself. :( I would really like to test this fix, so if anyone
gets a chance I would appreciate further assistance. Thanks again for
commenting in the first place, I appreciate it.

2013-11-14 Thread DancemasterGlenn
David, the patch has altered the nature of the crash, but I am still not
able to get into sound settings. Previously the window would open, hang,
and then crash, prompting me to file a report (which is what I did when
this started happening). Now trying to open the page opens and
immediately closes in a seg fault. It's probably for the best that we
were getting the old behavior, as this crash doesn't provide as much bug
report info off the bat...

running "gnome-control-center sound" simply prints out "Segmentation
fault (core dumped)". How can I get you more information? Something
about a backtrace, right? Can you walk me through this?

[Bug 405953] Re: 'Change Desktop Background' desktop context menu item doesn't make clear how much more you can change in gnome-appearance-properties

2010-09-03 Thread DancemasterGlenn
Hey, I'm a bit confused... this bug and another (#152561 ) have both
been marked as "invalid", and the reason given is that it has already
been reported. So where is the original bug? Why aren't they being
merged together? Is this something that was deemed a non-issue in 2007
(or earlier) and now will no longer be warranted with discussion? I'm
pretty sure even Windows changed their right click option to
"appearance" or something like it a few years back, and given the wealth
of options we get under the appearance window, does it really not make
sense to change this? Linux is all about theme-ablility (moreso than the
other "big two" distros), it should be advertised proudly that we can do
a whole lot more than just change a background...

[Bug 405953] Re: 'Change Desktop Background' desktop context menu item doesn't make clear how much more you can change in gnome-appearance-properties

2010-09-04 Thread DancemasterGlenn
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 152561 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/152561

(continuing here so I don't look crazy over there... I'll make a post on
the "main bug" saying I posted some rantings and ravings over here)

Then why even have the background window as a part of the overarching
appearance window? I can tell you that I personally have clicked the
"appearance" button in preferences fewer times than I could count on my
hands in the last two years, ever since I learned that "change
background" brought me to the exact same place. I use it to set up/test
fonts, install/test changes to themes, and yes, I even use it to add a
whole bunch of wallpapaers, and then proceed to use just one for about a
release cycle. I'm not saying that the wallpapaer section shouldn't be
the first thing you see, I do think that's the thing people will use the
most often. But it is not at all a jump of logic for a person to see the
word "appearance" and not still understand they can change their
background there.

Having checked, Windows now uses "personalize". Is that going to throw
off a user looking to change their wallpaper? Well... I don't think so.

[Bug 405953] Re: 'Change Desktop Background' desktop context menu item doesn't make clear how much more you can change in gnome-appearance-properties

In case there was any confusion, instead of going up to preferences, I
am using the right click menu to get to appearance. The preferences
entry is the one I almost never think to use.

[Bug 152561] Re: "change Desktop-Background" should be "Appearance"

2010-09-04 Thread DancemasterGlenn
Wrote a bunch of rants and raves in the duplicate of this "duplicate"
(duplicate of what?). tl;dr is basically that appearance is not a
misleading word for what a user is trying to do when looking to change
the background; I'm not against the wallpapers showing up first, that is
most likely what non-power users are browsing for, and were that the
first tab instead of themes we wouldn't even be having this discussion;
I personally use the right click way of getting into appearances for all
of its uses, rather than the preferences entry; even windows, which is
so much less configurable, has used "personalize" as its word of choice
since at least vista, and they're not nearly as configurable as we are.

Whew.

So that's my two cents on the issue. questions/comments/admonishment?
