[Bug 2023916] [NEW] Dock opacity is triggered by DING extension in Wayland

2023-06-14 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

if dock transparency is set to DYNAMIC,

dock opacity is triggered by DING extension in Wayland.

Works as expected under Xorg, dock background stays transparent while
DING is enabled.

Not the first time this happens (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell-extension-desktop-
icons-ng/+bug/1981837 ) it has been fixed for a moment and now issue is
back with latest version of gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock.

I can see that issue on many installations / machines running Ubuntu
22.04 LTS.

If of any interest, other gnome shell extensions ( transparent top bar,
dash to panel ) are not impacted by this issue. So far.

[Bug 2028311] [NEW] 22.04 : Default screenshot utility can be triggered from login-screen but useless.

2023-07-20 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Ubuntu 22.04 ( Gnome, GDM, Wayland )

Hitting « PrintScreen » key in login-screen launches default « new »
screenshot utility.

It seems to work, at the end it says « picture has been saved in the
paperboard ».

But how get hands on that paperboard later ?

No picture is saved in /root.

I suspect the screenshot utility should not be launch-able from login-
screen,

as it suggests something impossible to do ( get a screenshot of login-
screen. )

2023-07-20 Thread Coeur Noir
After that, when you log in into a session you might believe you have
some picture to paste, and it seems it's not the case :

Gimp will say there's no data to paste from paperboard.

So I expect one of these two things :

⋅ make the screenshot available to paste in regular session

or

⋅ make screenshot tool NOT available in login-screen.

Wait…

…today I don't have this behaviour.

Hitting printscreen key while in login-screen just does nothing.

Yesterday it triggered the screenshot utility each time I tried.

What a joke !

[Bug 2019906] Re: 23.04 : condensed, bold and black fonts can't be used for interface and title bar

2024-03-30 Thread Coeur Noir
Looks like the « problem » is still present in Ubuntu 24.04,

where any condensed variant of Ubuntu font family can't be applied
everywhere.

Setting this through dconf-editor

/org/gnome/desktop/interface/font-name

[Bug 2059871] [NEW] F9 still mentionned as a way to hide side pane but no longer works

2024-03-31 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

ubuntu 24.04 + nautilus 46

in Nautilus « main menu » the keyboard-shortcuts list [ ctrl + ? ] reads
F9 as a way to hide / unhide side panel.

I wish it were true, but it's no longer since 23.04 where F9 was
disabled upstream (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus/+bug/2020009 )

Though there was a button~icon at the bottom of window for hiding /
unhiding side panel.

Now this also seems gone.

So now only way to hide side pane is to adjust width of Nautilus window.

Hiding side pane is very convenient when needing to drag and drop
elements between two ( or more ) open windows of nautilus.

It can ease task for visually impaired people and people with unsure or
slow hand moves.

Could F9 shortcut or dedicated button-icon ( or both ) make a comeback
in Ubuntu ?

Then « only in collapsed mode » is missing in the help.

And what about the icon / button that happened to exist ?

At first sight and default non-collapsed mode, hide panel looks like
gone away from Nautilus.

The big difference here is the linked variants which suggest a variable
font type and maybe those are the culprits.

Older fonts were one file per variant.

Now if I set [ Ubuntu Condensed, Regular 13 ] as font-name in
/org/gnome/desktop/interface/font-name
everything seems to work fine.

2024-04-26 Thread Coeur Noir
** Description changed:

  Hi,

  fresh lunar lobster installation here,

from legacy iso image ( ubiquity installer. )

As I usually do, I tried to change the font for interface, as I much
prefer « condensed » fonts rather than large, round, regular ones.

In 20.04 or 22.04 or 22.10 gnome-tweaks allowed to do that.

- Today in 23.04, it only changes font in gnome-shell ( top panel,
- activities and app's views ) but not in other app's, not in the whole
- interface as it used to do.
+ Today in 24.04 ( and since 23.04 ) it only changes font in gnome-shell (
+ top panel, activities and app's views ) but not in other app's, not in
+ the whole interface as it used to do.

In dconf-editor I did not find entries regarding « global » interface
  font.

  Is this intended behavior ?

Ability to change font type and size is also a matter of accessibility.

What ?

Ok now it's buried one click further, therefore almost invisible.

That may not be a bug but a counter-intuitive « new » way.

So is there a method to add back an entry for « starring an item » into the (
right-click ) context-menu ?
That would make this feature « faster » reachable.

[Bug 2063892] Re: How to « star » an item in Nautilus 46 / Ubuntu 24.04 ?

2024-04-29 Thread Coeur Noir
** Description changed:

  Hi !

- For few months I'm getting used to « starred x items in Nautilus /
+ For few months I'm getting used to « starred » items in Nautilus /
  Ubuntu 22.04.

To my surprise I can't find how to do the same in 24.04,

looks like the option for « starring » an element is missing in context
  menu.

  It's a default install of 24.04 hence « minimal » so maybe I'm missing a
  package ?

And gnome-text-editor does neither show any weird shadow under its popup
menu.

For the moment I've only seen that « glitch » in gnome-terminal.

[Bug 2019906] Re: 24.04 : condensed, bold and black fonts can't be used for interface and title bar

2024-05-10 Thread Coeur Noir
Should I file a new report for 24.04 ?

Not being able to change the default font for whole interface is quite annoying,
furthermore when the latest Ubuntu font family pretends to offer some really
good condensed ones ;-)

Even weirder font-manager does not seem to have any problem to show them
( picture attached ).

For now my final trick :

[Bug 1883445] [NEW] de-confusing many items for one app

2020-06-14 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

When looking for an app' it's quite confusing it's listed twice ( or
more ), one on top of the list and one at end of the list.

I can think of 2 ways for ending confusion.

1. Add the packaging type to name of app
https://snapforum.s3.dualstack.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/original/2X/d/d3e2afef29ed6c82f7f639c45a9710412f196d9d.jpeg
and stop putting the legacy .deb package at the end. Its fair position is at
first or second in the list.

2. Only show one item for an app ( instead of one item by type of packaging )
and then give the choice of packaging type on the installation page
https://snapforum.s3.dualstack.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/original/2X/4/4492aa0ca29706dec898db61cddfe371b4c18685.jpeg
Better solution in my opinion.

This a mainly to avoid people installing without knowing the type of
package.

As it is today the package info is available too late and at the bottom
of the page.

[Bug 1790814] Re: Duplicate entries caused by debs and snaps offering the same application

2020-06-14 Thread Coeur Noir
It's a bug because app-store are used by less-techy user who then don't
notice what kind of package they have just installed. Or don't know why
they should prefer one over the other.

Then they wonder why their (un-noticed snap)app can't access such folder
or usb-thumbs …which is another problem.

That wouldn't matter if there were no differences in usage between a
.deb and a snap package ( or else ) but there are ( permissions, for
example ).

1. Add the packaging type to name of app
https://snapforum.s3.dualstack.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/original/2X/d/d3e2afef29ed6c82f7f639c45a9710412f196d9d.jpeg

[Bug 1883457] [NEW] Thumbnails for .xcf files only show in Gimp ( snap ) and nowhere else.

2020-06-14 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

On Ubuntu ( Budgie ) 20.04 when using Gimp as a snap, you’ll see
thumbnails for .xcf files only « inside » Gimp and nowhere else ( Nemo,
Nautilus, gThumb… )

I did a messy workaround for .xcf thumbnails to appear anywhere expected
: I put all of my user’s thumbnails into
~/snap/gimp/common/.cache/thumbnails/ and now ~/.cache/thumbnails/ is a
symlink targeting the first.

You’d agree it’s absolutely a bad idea to store all of an user’s
thumbnails into a particular subfolder of a particular snap.

How tell my session to look for thumbnails not only in
~/.cache/thumbnails/ but also in any thumbnails folder inside ~/snap/ ?

2020-07-02 Thread Coeur Noir
Okay… differently worded :

is it normal thumbnails generated by a snap-app ( and therefore stored
somewhere under ~/snap/… )
can't be then used by file explorer or pictures viewer ?

It's a regression between same app-as-deb and app-as-snap.

Just because Ubuntu looks for thumbnails only in ~/.cache/thumbnails or
~/.thumbnails
It should also watch inside any folder named thumbnails inside ~/snap

[Bug 1889317] [NEW] When clicking a .deb, file-roller gets launched ( instead of an installer for .deb )

2020-07-28 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

On Ubuntu 20.04 ( default flavor, and Budgie, maybe other else )

when clicking on a .deb it's file-roller that gets launched by default,
instead of an expected .deb installer ( be it through gnome-software-

AFAIK Budgie comes with « software » installed by default.

Does it matter if it's gnome-software with snap plugin rather than snap-

[Bug 1883457] Re: Thumbnails for .xcf files only show in Gimp ( snap ) and nowhere else.

2020-11-01 Thread Coeur Noir
I have finally ended up with binding both « thumbnails » folders through
fstab adding those lines :

# .xcf thumbnails from gimp snap for anyone
/home/user_1/.cache/thumbnails/
/home/user_1/snap/gimp/common/.cache/thumbnails/nonebind0 0
/home/user_2/.cache/thumbnails/
/home/user_2/snap/gimp/common/.cache/thumbnails/nonebind0 0
/home/user_3/.cache/thumbnails/
/home/user_3/snap/gimp/common/.cache/thumbnails/nonebind0 0

This way, Gimp-snap actually writes its thumbnails there and then Nemo
and Nautilus accordingly displays thumbnails for .xcf files.

gThumb though still shows empty frames for .xcf files - but my main
concern was the file explorer.

It's not a problem to be resolved in the different applications that are
loading thumbnails, snapd should resolve that usecase by making those
write to a location used by the system

Don't know if it helps, the only option regarding i965 intel driver to
have an influence (among the 3 tested there) on the animation of the
Nautilus window is "TearFree".

But the problem it introduces (tearing in Firefox) is far more annoying
than the problem it solves (the jolting window minimizing animation).

It seems to happen mostly with Nautilus window.

[Bug 1913336] [NEW] snap : connected usb storage don't show up in left pane

2021-01-26 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

coming from https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/gtk-file-explorer-does-not-
show-removable-media-in-left-pane/22344

while using snap app's, gtk-file-explorer does not show usb connected
storage at first sight in left pane, as it does in same regular .deb
app's - I tried in chromium, libreoffice and gimp.

Where it's supposed to appear :
https://snapforum.s3.dualstack.us-east-1.amazonaws.com/original/2X/a/ae3104599555b6bb3ffbe642d88b6f2522d8e291.png

Actually, in snap, to access an usb storage you have to browse the full path
other places → computer → /media → $USER → usb label or uuid
( see attachment )

[Bug 1720262] Re: gnome-screenshot Actions don't work in Wayland

2021-02-23 Thread Coeur Noir
Hi,

Ubuntu Budgie 20.04 here - so no wayland and no gnome-shell.

Desktop Actions are still broken in gnome-screenshot.

If re-enable

Actions=screen-shot;window-shot;area-shot

area-shot has then no effect.

Other two seem ok but I was unable to modify options ( -p -d or else )
as seen in gnome-screenshot --help

Seems like it always want to act as soon as clicked - hence maybe why
the area-shot can't work ?

[Bug 1789943] [NEW] Ubuntu Software only show snap app's wiithout any explanations or advices

2018-08-30 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

for a moment now, I noticed on Ubuntu 16.04 and 18.04 that Ubuntu
Software only show snap app's.

Problem : there is no easy to read « label » or « warning » regarding
snap, and how they can be « configured ».

Consequence : many users and not only beginners ask help on forums
because their FireFox or Gimp can't access such folder, such partition,
such usb key, because they can't find config' files in usual place,
because such app launches slowly, other looks out of place, other is not
localized in their language, and so on…

What I may expect :
- enable / disable snap listing,
- when snap app shown : the word snap bold in its name or a label or a flashy
header that leads to advices about how to correctly set and use snap,
- by default, disable snap in LTS version ( where apt/deb and official
repositories sound careful ),
- or give priority to legacy packaging and show snap only when nothing else
available for such app.

I consider this as a bug because it gets many users « lost » with a not
so good experience with common and often already known and loved
softwares.

I know snap keeps improving but they may not provide the same reliable
and predictable experience as « legacy » packaging - hence the LTS note.

[Bug 1789943] Re: Ubuntu Software only shows snap app's without any explanations or advices

2018-08-31 Thread Coeur Noir
Hello Olivier,

My « issue » here really is not about snap.

But about software center that do not clearly show when app is a snap
and therefore let people install them without pointing to a 3-4 steps
pieces of advice about how correctly setting a snap.

Nowadays end-users learn they installed a snap by a very wrong way :
because their favourite app no longer works as expected. Most of the
time it's just wrong settings about authorisations and confinement.

So I really think some highlight and warning in software store would
ensure people install snap in a more cautious, conscient and efficient
way and would avoid most disappointments.

So no opinion here but an improvement wish for software stores.

Now a question : is it normal I no longer see regular legacy packages in
Ubuntu-gnome-software ?
Only snap ?

( are there bots here ? )

Issue is about app-store not being clear nor helpful enough.

One may end with confined app without knowing how to tailor it to
his•her needs.

[Bug 1870575] [NEW] App's name are truncated in full screen grid view

2020-04-03 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Ubuntu 20.04, default.

In the global app-menu ( full screen grid view ) app'names are
truncated, only displayed on one line.

There is enough room to display them on two or three lines under each
icon.

Maybe it's not a big readability concern in English but it is in French
and I guess in German and other languages as many app's start with same
first words, i.e. Gestionnaire de… / Éditeur de… / Libre Office…

[Bug 968213] Re: Too many icons in Gnome Shell Activities Overview require ellipses

2020-06-02 Thread Coeur Noir
There has been many proposals to upstream throughout years for fixing
that stupid and ridiculous ellipsis.

Upstream seems not to want to merge those because these days they are
working on a new app grid - where ellipsis is still a thing.

It's been years they don't care.

Maybe that should be fixed only downstream in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and too
bad for others ???

[Bug 1730199] [NEW] No wheel mouse actions on dock ?

2017-11-05 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi…

Are there any wheel mouse actions intended on icons in dock ?

When I have many windows opened for an app' ( let's say calc ) I
expected to cycle between windows using wheel mouse.

Yes, like in Unity.

I can see left click displays a preview of the many windows but it's a
tiring, slower and noisier method.

Public bug reported:

Hi…

Don't know if it's related to nautilus or dock.

Bookmarks - default ones like documents, videos, pictures… or manually
added ones through ctrl+d - are not displayed on right click on nautilus

Only [ new window | remove from favorites | details ] appear.

( I'm a little dubious about the details usefulness here, too )

[Bug 1730765] [NEW] Mounted external devices do not appear in dock

2017-11-07 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

when plugging a usb-thumb or external hard drive or any other storage
media ( phone… )

I expected them to appear in the dock.

Instead, they appear on desktop which forces
- to leave current activity to look at the desktop,
- or to open nautilus to find the new device.

Dock is a very nice place for these plugged-in devices ;-) maybe at its
bottom end, where trash used to be located in Unity dock ?

[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

Hello,

That bug is not fixed in 17.10 !

For reference : https://forum.ubuntu-
fr.org/viewtopic.php?pid=21823638#p21823638

tl;dr → umask is set at 002 in ~/.profile AND in /etc/login.defs
but new folders created through Nautilus ( or terminal ) don't grant write
permission for group.
Unless if created in desktop folder ( why ? ).

That's a big problem in multi-users environment.

Other curiosity, I don't have that problem with Budgie 17.10 where
setting umask at 002 in /etc/login.defs works as expected.

[Bug 1685754] Re: gnome-terminal unduly forces umask=0022

2017-11-11 Thread Coeur Noir
Files created with Gedit don't apply expected 002 umask.

But files ( or folders ) created with i.e. Gimp apply expected 002
umask.

A foreseeable way of setting umask system wide and/or per session is
very much needed in order to administrate 17.10 machines in local
network ( school, library, business, anything… ) where people share
files/folders, be it through samba or nfs…

…that's not of low importance, it's a security issue.

[Bug 1983175] [NEW] In Wayland, can't wake up monitor after it has gone black

2022-07-30 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

sorry I don't know if it's about GDM or else.

Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS
jammy
Linux 5.15.0-41-generic x86_64 x86_64
ubuntu / wayland
installed DE's are :
ubuntu.desktop ubuntu-xorg.desktop

My system is set to turn screen black after some minutes. And after some
other minutes later, it locks the screen → no sleep nor hibernate
involved ( even if sleep and hibernate are ok on that machine. )

On Xorg, after screen's gone black, any mouse or keyboard solicitation
fires up again the screen, as expected.

On Wayland, after screen's gone black, any mouse or keyboard
solicitation just does nothing, screen stays black.

BUT

keyboard is not turned off : only thing that works for « waking up » the screen
is
key-combo [ ctrl ] + [ alt ] + [ F1 ]

[Bug 1986463] [NEW] no Desktop bookmark in side pane under Wayland

2022-08-14 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Ubuntu 22.04 here.

On a Wayland session, Nautilus shows no bookmark for desktop in side pane.
It does ( from the same user session ) while under Xorg.

Picture attached shows 2 different users session ( as I first thought of
different settings users' side ) but I firmly confirm the only « culprit
» is using Wayland vs. using Xorg.

So the Nautilus window on the left of the picture comes from a Wayland session
( no desktop bookmark in side pane, bad ),
and the one on the right side comes from a Xorg session ( with desktop bookmark
in side pane, good. )

[Bug 1986468] [NEW] right click on icon does not always show bookmarks

2022-08-14 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

Ubuntu 22.04 here.

A right click on Nautilus icon ( in the dock ) does not always show the
list of bookmarks ( automatic and manually added ).

Nautilus has to be already launched and running in order to show that
list.

This list of « shortcuts » was ago always accessible on right click - in
Unity.

It's a very convenient list of shortcuts, non-intrusive, calm on the
eyes, and fast.

On Xorg I may be able to launch Nautilus as a minimized window, using
xdotools or wmctrl or devilspie.

On Wayland I don't know how to do that : starting Nautilus as a
minimized window with my session might be a workaround for that missing
list.

But ideally an option for Nautilus to start minimized sounds cleaner (
but options like -u or --start-minimized are not offered by Nautilus
afaik ).

Other pictures, showing both states of right click on Nautilus icon.

One might think that the whole list should be shown while Nautilus is *not*
launched
( since once launched that same list sits in its side pane. )

[Bug 1983175] Re: In Wayland, can't wake up monitor after it has gone black

2022-09-10 Thread Coeur Noir
Mmm…

I had « the bug » once yesterday.

Maybe I can narrow down a bit its context.

After using some sessions on the machine ( meaning : all sessions work
and I'm able to switch between all of them, using « change user » ) I
went back to the login screen where one can chose an user. But I had to
left office a moment, an hour maybe, so leaving computer with that login
screen on ( the one that shows after clicking on « change user » )

Back at the office, screen is black, which seems normal
but typing anything on keyboard or moving mouse or clicking blindly did not
wake up screen.

And this time [ ctrl ] + [ alt ] + [ F1 ] did nothing.

So I hit the [ sleep ] key on the keyboard, putting computer in …sleep, of
course.
Waking it up, still nothing on screen but hitting [ ctrl ] + [ alt ] + [ F1 ]
brought me back the login screen.

Does this help to pinpoint a culprit ?

[ sorry, I forgot about the log, I'll try to think about it next it
happens. If it happens. ]

Xorg sessions, by the way these days.

[Bug 1995199] Re: Renaming home folders corrupts side panel behavior

2022-11-03 Thread Coeur Noir
Well renaming $HOME is questionable, at least, depending on how you made it.
And the names of usual folders inside $HOME follow some conventions ( XDG,
freedesktop ) which are expected by your desktop environment and system.

It's probably your ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file which has been emptied
after such renaming.

By default it looks like :

# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run.
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Download"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"

If you only renamed the $HOME folder then you'll have to replace

$HOME/

by

/home/new_name_for_user/

If you also renamed one or all of those 8 usual and conventional folders,
you'll have to replace

XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"

by

XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="/home/new_name_for_user/new_name_for_desktop"

and for each renamed folder.

This mechanic is handled at start of session by xdg-user-dirs / xdg-
user-dirs-gtk

Folder for $HOME is expected to be the user's name, in lower case
letters, as given by command

id

The matching of user's name + « real » name + other info about one user
+ place for his $HOME + uid + primary gid is stored into the file
/etc/passwd you may look at it using

grep -E :[0-9]{4}: /etc/passwd

which will show you only the « human » users on your system ( those with
uid ≥ 1000 )

[Bug 1998112] [NEW] Nautilus shows 4 icons for 2 files while ls command shows 2 files

2022-11-28 Thread Coeur Noir
Public bug reported:

Hi,

see picture attached.

There are only 2 files in the folder, as shown by ls in terminal.

But Nautilus shows those files twice ( 2× 2 icons. )

Going back and forth or refresh window in Nautilus brings back to normal
view with expected 2 icons.

[Bug 1998112] Re: Nautilus shows 4 icons for 2 files while ls command shows 2 files

2022-11-28 Thread Coeur Noir
I was playing around

/usr/share/backgrounds/

~/Bureau/

~/Images/Arrières-plan Bureau/

I did use some drag and drop between « desktop » and Nautilus.

At some point, drag'and'drop a file between desktop and a Nautilus
window created symlink instead of moving or copying item.

I've trashed undesired symlinks, and after that I used right-click cut-
paste ( from desktop to Nautilus window ), ending in 2× icons per file.

So I launched the ls command to have another view on the folder, and
confirm where my files were ( and how many were they. )
