[Bug 56731] Gaim crashed when I connect to MSN (only)

2006-08-17 Thread Anders
Public bug reported:

I can connect Gaim to irc, AIM etc without any problem; however when I
connect to (manually and/or 'autologin' to MSN, the application
systematically crashed.

Obtained a backtrace as suggested at:

[Bug 310224] Re: Cannot open smb:// because of dbus-error

2010-09-13 Thread Anders
I'm seeing something similar since upgrading to 10.10 - I have a Netgear
ReadyNAS and I used to be able to connect form all my laptops running
10.04, but on 10.10, all of them are failing to connect over Samba with
the same error message: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply:

Is anyone else still experiencing this bug or is mine a new one
introduced in the meerkat?

[Bug 617892] Re: Fotoxx samba share access 32 bit like Geequie

2010-09-15 Thread Anders
Kornelix, thanks for your quick reply and for keeping an eye on fotoxx
bugs on Launchpad (not all app developers do)

I assumed you used a standard GNOME dialogue, but curiously, there seem
to be 2 different dialogue boxes in play: GIMP, OpenOffice and Totem,
for example, work fine with samba shares, whereas some applications
(like fotoxx) just don't show them. As an end user I can't tell what
causes the difference except that there is something "funny" going
on...?

Further investigation reveals this is probably a duplicate of Bug
#304345 - a bug in the GTK file chooser that prevents a string of
applications to select samba shares.

Workaround: Browser to the desired location in Nautilus, then use the
file chooser and go to {home directory}/.gvfs/{desired share}

[Bug 382257] [NEW] Special keys on Acer Aspire 5920G (Norwegian) not recognized

2009-05-31 Thread Anders
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

The Acer Aspire 5920 has a number of unusual keys, including a $ and a €
key in the bottom right corner. Pressing these keys simply yield no
input in any Ubuntu application.

Additionally, the keyboard's special play/pause, stop and forward/backward are
incorrectly mapped in Totem:
Play/pause triggers fast forward
Stop triggers fast backwards/rewind
The forward/backward buttons yield no reaction.

Most other "special" keys like Wifi, Bluetooth and even the volume
control work perfectly.

[Bug 500097] [NEW] gdm displays black window

2009-12-24 Thread Anders
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I use gdm as a display manager. It starts up and displays a login screen
with an accesibility menu, but the login window is empty.

I attached /var/log/gdm/:0-greeter.log.1. (Apologies for Swedish;
"Lyckat" means "Success", and there are warnings entities that aren't
ended by semicolons.) The usernames on this computer are "a-b"
and "x-y" (redacted), but the log contains warnings about not
finding "b" and "y". The GECOS fields are "a & b" and
"x & y", respectively; this seems to be related to the warning
about entities. However, I tried to add another user without hyphens and
ampersands, but the problem remains.

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when "Shut Down" chosen from GUI

2012-10-21 Thread anders
Hi,
Yesterday I upgraded from 12.04 to 12.10 and this appears to solve the problem.
The reboot after the upgrade worked and the PC was able to shut down and
power-off yesterday.
I will report back if the problem pops up again.
Best regards
Anders

[Bug 987220] Re: no complete shutdown

2012-06-12 Thread anders
I have the same problem on my Dell Inspiron 1720. Everything appears to shut
down except the fan and leds which stay on.
Also I have noticed problems with the wireless network.
If I turn on my wireless router after Ubuntu has started the network newer
connects. The workaround is to disable and
reenable the network.

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when "Shut Down" chosen from GUI

2012-06-12 Thread anders
I can confirm that changing to the virtual terminal also stops working. This
may be caused by the binary nvidia driver for
the GeForce 8600M GT graphics card in my PC. I am currently using version
295.49 of the driver but both installed
drivers have the fault. I have used Ubuntu on this PC for several years without
this problem so this bug was
introduced with 12.04.

I have tried "$ sudo poweroff" from a terminal and it fails. Shutdown from an
remote ssh login also fails. Currently I do not have
any safe way to shut down the system.

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when "Shut Down" chosen from GUI

2012-06-21 Thread anders
Great work!

This also solves the problem on my Laptop: dell Inspiron 1720 (Intel
Core 2 Duo T7500, Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT)

I did the following:
1) reboot and enter BIOS setup by pressing
2) use menu: [+] Maintenance -> * Load Defaults

After this I re-enabled virtualization support because I occasionally use
virtualbox:
3) use menu: [+] POST Behavior -> * Virtualization

Both virtual console (ctrl-alt-f1) and power down is working now. Don't
know what caused the problem in the first place though.

Best regards
Anders

now. Apparently it only works right after power-on

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when "Shut Down" chosen from GUI

2013-03-09 Thread anders
My Labtop still hangs If i do a shutdown from unity. However I have
found a workaround which is to chose logout and then select shutdown
from the login screen. This works every time.

Seems like something breaks after running unity for some time, but it
gets reset when the X server is restarted by doing a logout.

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when "Shut Down" chosen from GUI

2012-07-23 Thread anders
Is it confirmed that the power down hang problem is caused by the nvidia driver.
The reason I ask is because I also have issues with wlan on my PC.
If I turn on the router before booting ubuntu the network newer connects. I
then have to "disable network" followed "enable network" before it works.
Sometimes it connects but does not seem to be configured correctly. I used to
be able to run "sudo /sbin/dhclient" in previous ubuntu releases but in 12.04
this command just hangs.

This does not have any effect on my dell inspiron 1720. After a while the

[Bug 987220] Re: System does not power off reliably when "Shut Down" chosen from GUI

2012-07-31 Thread anders
I was just hoping that we could identify the root cause of the problem, but
perhaps it is not so simple or maybe there is more than one bug.
In my case I removed the closed source nvidia driver yesterday as suggested by
Lucy O'Neill. The procedure is described at the following homepage:
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/UbuntuPackages
The open source nouveau driver is working fine and the system is now able to
power off without problems.

I guess Linus Torvalds is right in his opinion about nvidia. It is
pretty hard to debug and fix a problem when you don't have the source
code. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_36yNWw_07g

2012-08-03 Thread anders
I am now using the nvidia driver again because the PC gets very hot when using
the nouveau driver (power management is not implemented so it always runs at
100%).
It appears that the shutdown issue is only present in version 295.49 of the
nvidia driver. Version 173.14.35 is working but has other issues regarding
resume from suspend and changing from console to X (ctrl-alt-f7).

[Bug 199006] Re: Please set wake up from suspend by USB keyboard or mouse as default

2009-10-28 Thread Anders
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 109446 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/109446

Roberto/Francis, feel free to see if acpitool solved (part of) your problem:
http://freeunix.dyndns.org:8088/site2/acpitool.shtml
http://sourceforge.net/projects/acpitool/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/acpitoolgui/

sudo aptitude install acpitool

Furthermore, I agree with the requestor(s) that it'd be useful if this
feature was available as a switch accessible through GUI e.g. in the
GNOME power manager preferences or similar (wherever one can set
suspend/hibernate preferences)

[Bug 465209] [NEW] 2 near identical laptops: one suspends happily, the other hangs

2009-10-30 Thread Anders
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I've got two HP Compaq nx6110 laptops, both installed from 9.10 release
candidate and now running the final Karmic. On a fresh install, both
laptops suspended, hibernated and resumed happily. I've since installed
wicd and acpitool on one of the laptops and it no longer suspends or
hibernates - it just hangs on a blank (but backlit) screen, power light
not switching off - i.e. not entering sleep state.

With the exception of wicd replacing NetworkManager on one of the
laptops they're pretty much identical.

How can I debug whether wicd is the culprit and/or whatever else I might
have done to this system to break suspend? My only other alternative is
to re-install from scratch again...

[Bug 109446] Re: Need /proc/acpi/wakeup tweaks to enable mousepad and USB to wake up from suspend

2009-11-09 Thread Anders
I concur with Sam - I would have expected more of these options in
gnome-power-manager - if it allows me to set expected behaviour when
shutting the lid - why not allow me to set expected behaviour when
opening the lid?

I've added a comment to http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/21747/ to
include a link to this feature request.

[Bug 349312] Re: Evolution 2.26 does not support import of outlook .pst

2010-05-25 Thread Anders
For whoever wishes to tinker with this, Microsoft has just released open
sourced PST manipulation tools, which presumably will enable
Thunderbird/Evolution/etc to implement improved PST fupport shortly:

Re: [Bug 500097] Re: gdm displays black window

2010-04-23 Thread Anders
Hi Sebastien!

Thank you for your reply on my issue. I was wondering about the process
for this trouble report.

Yes, I still have this issue and my "long" username contains '&' and my
"nickname" contains '-'. I have not tried lucid yet, but I am to try it as
soon it is released (just a few days left!).

I wish you good luck and please notify me if you found something and in
witch release it will be corrected.

Best Regards,
Anders Lindström
