I'm guessing gtk4 dropped the fix for bug 2076652 and is now waiting on
the alternate fix in mutter 48.

[Bug 2090805] [NEW] gdm blank screen

2024-12-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After applying updates, Ubuntu 22.04 suggested rebooting the system.
After rebooting the system, the GUI doesn't come up. It also seems to
have changed grub defaults so that the grub menu no longer displays for
a countdown of 3 seconds.

During the first reboot after the update, a whole bunch of errors in red
flashed by as part of the boot sequence but I wasn't able to capture
them. That led to a non-responsive black screen with no cursor. Then I
tried a couple of more reboots, but while I didn't see any red text, the
system still didn't put up a GUI.

I tried a few things that didn't work. I then tried to do a do-release-
upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04 that I had been putting of because I couldn't
afford the risk of downtime if the upgrade went badly in case it fixed
whatever config snafu the first package-level upgrade screwed up. I also
tried to do a package reinstall of the ubuntu-desktop, gdm, and gnome
packages and none of that work, although I did get a cursor on a black
screen at one point, so I think the compositor is working, but the
display manager isn't working.

I can run commands on the Ctl-Alt-F2 virtual console, which is how I
initiated this bug report, but that's it. As far as I know, I'm running
gnome with the Wayland compositor.

There were a bunch of apparmor messages and warnings at one point, so
I'm not sure if that could be the problem.

Hi, Daniel,

I do not want remove the gnome extensions. I use them. If you would
pinpoint that some of them are causing the issue then please let me
know.

The issue is quite sporadic. I may try to add this:
MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple
What is that for ?

[Bug 2092207] [NEW] Games have weird static with fractional scaling in Ubuntu 25.04

2024-12-19 Thread Alexander Koskovich
Public bug reported:

Already have a bug report upstream in mutter (though closed:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3721).

Wanted to open one here too since Ubuntu has enabled this feature by
default for 25.04, and it will make all games unplayable for people
using fractional scaling (which is effectively required if you have a
32" 4K display).

Without xwayland-native-scaling, games render at half of native
resolution, but still better than static spraying across your screen.

[Bug 2088997] Re: Second screen completely frozen, some windows stuck

2024-12-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Any extension in $HOME/.local/share/gnome-shell/extensions/ is not
officially supported by Ubuntu, and so usually needs to be removed to
prove it's not causing bugs.

But adding MUTTER_DEBUG_FORCE_KMS_MODE=simple to /etc/environment
changes the kernel API used for screen updates and that alone might fix
your problem like in other bugs:

[Bug 2089843] Re: Applications stop receiving touch updates when the finger moves outside of the window

2024-12-19 Thread Alessandro Astone
** Description changed:

  [ Impact ]

A touchscreen input sequence is supposed to "grab" onto the window where
the action started, so that even when moving the finger outside of the
window updates are still sent to it. Instead, as the finger leaves the
surface of the window, that stops receiving all touch updates and does
not even receive a finish event.

  [ Test Case ]

  0. Log in to a GNOME Wayland desktop session
  1. Open the Nautilus file manager
  2. Navigate to a directory with many files
  3. Switch to the vertical "List View"
- 4. Start scrolling with the touchscreen
+ 4. Start scrolling vertically with the touchscreen
  5. While scrolling, let the finger leave the surface of the window to its
right
  7. Verify that Nautilus keeps scrolling even with the finger outside the
window

[ Where problems could occur ]

mutter is the Wayland compositor library that provides graphics and inputs
for the GNOME desktop, thus is a critical component.
Problems could manifest with touch input not working anymore, or sudden
log-out if gnome-shell crashes.
The change is limited to touchscreen handling, and won't ever affect a system
without touchscreen.

[Bug 2080698] Re: Window movements can cause full framebuffer damage

2024-12-19 Thread Alessandro Astone
** Description changed:

+ [ Impact ]
+
+ Window movements can cause a re-draw of the whole screen.
+ That causes an unnecessary performance hit, especially noticeable when using
a remote session.
+
  Upstream bug: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/issues/3630
  Upstream fix:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/mutter/-/commit/030270ba3bf14b23a2d7a5371cf158ff2591f327

- This should be patched in Noble.
+ [ Test Plan ]

- ## Steps to Reproduce
- 1. Set up an Ubuntu VM and log in
+ 1. Set up an Ubuntu system and log in
  2. Launch the Looking Glass debugger by pressing `Alt+F2`, typing `lg`, and
pressing Enter
  3. Navigate to the "Flags" tab in the top right corner of the debug window
  4. Scroll down and enable the `PAINT_DAMAGE_REGION` flag. By enabling this
flag, a red overlay will appear to show regions where the screen is being
redrawn and helps visualize framebuffer damage.
- 5. Proceed to reproduce the issues listed in this bug report by performing
actions such as:
- - Opening a new window
- - Dragging a window across the screen
- - Resizing any window
- - Changing window stacking order
+ 6. Drag a window across the screen
+ 7. Verify that the red overlay only covers the window rectangle rather than
the whole screen
+
+ [ Where problems could occur ]
+
+ mutter is the Wayland compositor library that provides graphics and inputs

[Bug 2080698] Re: Window movements can cause full framebuffer damage

2024-12-19 Thread Alessandro Astone
The bug is fixed upstream only for dragging windows, not for all other
interactions. But as we already marked this "Fix Release" I've changed
the rest of the bug description to reflect that, and we'll use this bug
to SRU the fix.

** Description changed:

Indeed 400% does not sound sensible. Mutter should be looking at the
pixel density to choose a scaling factor. Please run:

  xrandr --verbose > xrandr.txt

and attach the resulting text file here.

2024-12-19 Thread Alessandro Astone
Verified test plans E and F on Ubuntu 24.04.1 in QEMU/KVM with a VirtIO
GPU, using gdm3, libgdm1, gir1.2-gdm-1.0 version 46.2-1ubuntu1~24.04.1
from noble-proposed.

Ideally someone could verify on real hardware, but GDM handles a virtual
GPU in the same way as a real GPU, except when both a virtual GPU and a
real GPU are available which is not my case. So I believe this is a good
enough test.

That's right Daniel.

Actually the mutter fix has just landed upstream, and they're targeting
GNOME 47 so we should get this in the next 47.x release.

[Bug 2090876] Re: [SRU] GDM Stable Release 46.2 to Noble

2024-12-19 Thread Alessandro Astone
Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/GDM I've
verified Test Cases 1, 2 and 5.b on Ubuntu 24.04.1 using gdm3, libgdm1,
gir1.2-gdm-1.0 version 46.2-1ubuntu1~24.04.1 from noble-proposed.

I'm unable to verify test cases 3 and 4 for lack of hardware.

[Bug 2043517] Re: gnome-shell on non-active VT busy-loops through libwayland-server.so (sometimes)

2024-12-19 Thread Alan Jenkins
I confirm:

1. the test plan reproduced the bug on current Noble.
2. the test plan no longer reproduced the bug, after installing
xwayland_23.2.6-1ubuntu0.2_amd64.deb
3. "xterm" appears to work still.

## sidenote

It's hard to check which apps still use X11 (and hence help confirm lack
of regressions).

If I open "gitk" or "git gui", they don't show in "xlsclients".

But "DISPLAY= gitk" fails. I.e. gitk requires DISPLAY to be set
correctly.

And "WAYLAND_DISPLAY= gitk" does not fail.

[Bug 2077641] Please test proposed package

2024-12-19 Thread Andreas Hasenack
Hello Ken, or anyone else affected,

Accepted malcontent into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/malcontent/0.10.4-1ubuntu0.22.04 in
a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)

[Bug 2092240] [NEW] Update epiphany-browser to 47.2

2024-12-19 Thread Jeremy Bícha
Public bug reported:

Impact
-
This is a new stable release in the 47 series.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/epiphany/-/blob/47.2/NEWS

Test Cases
--
Install the update

1. Open the Web app. Enter https://ubuntu.com/ in the address bar and
ensure it loads successfully.

2. Visit https://www.markshuttleworth.com/
In the address bar, there should be a Reader Mode icon. Click it and ensure
that reader mode works normally.

3. From a terminal run
sudo apt install gstreamer1.0-plugins-bad

Visit https://youtube.com/ and ensure that you can play videos.

What Could Go Wrong
---
epiphany is not seeded in any Ubuntu desktop flavor so users are likely to have
another web browser available if things were to go wrong and know how to
install it.

As a component of GNOME core, there is a micro-release exception for
epiphany-browser

[Bug 2092241] [NEW] Shotwell always steals my Android phone from Nautilus and cannot be stopped

2024-12-19 Thread Adam Novak
Public bug reported:

Previously, Shotwell would confusingly refuse to mount my Android phone
as a camera, since Nuatilus would always mount it first. So I would just
copy the files off the phone with Nautilus and *then* import them into
Shotwell.

Since upgrading to 24.04, that has been fixed, but now Shotwell *always*
mounts my Android phone as a camera if Shotwell is open. I can be
browsing around it in Nautilus, open Shotwell, and it will be taken away
from Nautilus by Shotwell. There does not seem to be a Shotwell setting
to control this behavior.

Shotwell seems to have a couple other problems with talking to the phone
(it goes through my hundreds of photos making previews at about one per
second, and it sees a bunch of non-photo files or thumbnails on the
phone that it thinks it probably ought to import). So I still want to
copy the files oiff in Nautilus and then import them in Shotwell.

So what I am *trying* to do is open Shotwell, see what the most recent
photo I have is, go on the phone in Nautilus, and copy all the newer
photos from the correct photos directory on the phone onto my machine,
so I can import them in Shotwell from a local folder.

But I can't do this, because I can't have Shotwell open while also
having the phone mounted in Nautilus.

[Bug 2092171] Re: Mouse cursor is oversized in GTK4 apps

2024-12-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
GNOME 47 doesn't sound sensible because the feature looks way too large
for a stable maintenance branch:

 108 files changed, +4167, −1582

Even if upstream merged it to 47, we would not accept it. This is the
same reason why the SRU team stopped trusting Mutter/Shell point
releases.

[Bug 2091237] Re: The login problem is still not fixed, I'm using an ultrawide monitor 5120x1440 and ubuntu defaults the first login screen to 400%

2024-12-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There's your problem; the detected screen size is "1mm x 1mm". So Mutter
just chooses the maximum scaling factor to compensate.

That's clearly a software bug in the Xorg driver because decoding your
EDID from the monitor I can see the monitor is reporting itself as 120
cm x 34 cm.

So that we can find out which component to assign the bug to, please
run:

  dpkg -l > packages.txt
  journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and attach the resulting text files here.
