[Bug 1917066] Re: windows and popups in gnome become unresponsive

2021-03-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. Since most bugs of this nature are caused by
extensions, the first thing to do is to check for and uninstall/disable
all non-Ubuntu extensions you have enabled. At a minimum:

  1. Disable all extensions in the 'Extensions' app; and

  2. Look in ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/ and if you find a directory
called 'extensions' then delete it.

  3. Reboot and tell us if the problem happens again.

  4. If the problem does happen again then please run this command to
collect more system info:

I don't think that feature makes sense in gnome-shell which has no

If you would like it added to gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons or

[Bug 1917629] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't work correctly for touch screens

2021-03-03 Thread Alexander
Public bug reported:

This error is not caused by additional software, it occurs in the file manager
even before installing ubuntu in trial mode.
These are black pop-ups that block subsequent input of commands, and that
remain on the screen for too long.
These windows are descriptions of functions or folders, for example: Downloads
(window: "/home/user/Downloads").
The window (/home/user/Downloads) remains on the screen even when you touch to
any other area of the screen.

In addition, you need to click on the folders several times to open them and
this happens randomly, sometimes just one touch is enough to open any of the
folders, but most often three or four times.
And so, it can't be used correctly on my device.

[Bug 1917175] Re: gdm login screen says "Something went wrong please try again" three times and sends me back to the login screen when I'm not typing anything

2021-03-03 Thread Jonathan Kamens
I don't understand why you are asking me for a crash report. You don't
need a crash report to know what is going on here. I described to you
exactly what is going on and exactly how to reproduce the issue: gdm
fails in the way I described if libpam-fprintd isn't installed, and the
web of dependencies of packages in Hirsute allowed an upgrade to
uninstall fprintd-clients but did not require libpam-fprintd to be
installed in its place.

It appears that perhaps a dependency to libpam-fprintd was added to the
gdm3 package after I filed this issue, because I see that it has such a
dependency now, and I don't see how I could have done the update before
with that dependency in place without libpam-fprintd being installed
during the update.

[Bug 1917674] [NEW] Freeze when resuming from automatic suspension to RAM

2021-03-03 Thread Douglas Silva
Public bug reported:

Automatic suspension causes the system to freeze on resume. This doesn't
happen if I suspend it manually by opening the system menu and pressing
the suspend button. Suspension works flawlessly when it is triggered
manually.

When the system resumes from automatic suspension, the lock screen is
visible but does not respond. It's frozen. A notification says something
like "system will suspend shortly due to inactivity". It never goes
away.

The keyboard responds during this (at least for a while). The CAPS LOCK
LED turns on and off as I press it (with no delay). Sometimes I can even
switch to another TTY and kill the X server, which is why I'm reporting
it against gnome-shell. When switching TTY is impossible, I use the
"REISUB" combination to shut down. Either way, I always lose the running
session.

This is reproducible about 60% of the time. Eventually I ended up
disabling it and relying only on manual suspension.

[Bug 1915481] Re: [nvidia] gnome crashes after running `apt upgrade`

2021-03-03 Thread Walt Mankowski
I just had gnome crash on me again while running `sudo apt upgrade`.
Only 3 packages were updated. Here's the latest entry in
/var/log/apt/history.log:

End-Date: 2021-03-03 19:17:23

Log ended: 2021-03-03 19:17:23

I'll attach the output of journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

Note that the times seem a bit off to me. They seem to say I started the
update at 19:16:46, but according to journal.txt I ran `apt update` at
19:15:52. I think I ran `apt upgrade` earlier than 19:16:46 because the
first stack trace for gnome-shell is at 19:16:21.

One other odd thing is that while I got a new gnome login prompt fairly
quickly, it took me about half a dozen login attempts before I could
successfully login. I didn't get any errors; rather, the screen would go
blank and then I'd get the login prompt again.

There was nothing new under /var/crash, nor under
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID.

[Bug 1917324] Re: right click on desktop 'open in terminal' option missing

2021-03-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I didn't realize Ubuntu had switched to gnome-shell-extension-desktop-
icons-ng while I was away, but it's disabled by default after upgrades.
So yes "Open in Terminal" does exist there.

It still makes no sense for the case without extensions (gnome-shell
task) because there is no context to be opened in a terminal there. The
'Desktop' folder is meaningless in that case so opening it in a terminal
is also meaningless.

I will update all the tasks with the correct status at the top of this
page now...

[Bug 1916827] Re: Update libgweather to v40

2021-03-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm not in a hurry. This was intended more for 21.10, not 21.04. We are
on 3.36.1 right now which is the latest stable release. But
unfortunately the diff from that to master is huge, so I don't think
it's something we should force into hirsute.

[Bug 1917660] Re: This happens from time to time, gnome-shell creates large files in the var/crash/ directory.

2021-03-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

[Bug 1917175] Re: gdm login screen says "Something went wrong please try again" three times and sends me back to the login screen when I'm not typing anything

2021-03-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
"Something went wrong please try again" means something crashed. And
different machines with different configurations will experience
different crashes. We need to know which crash you are experiencing.

If you're not interested in going through the crash reporting
instructions, that's OK - we can ignore the crashes and just focus on
bug 1917178 instead.

[Bug 1181666] Re: gnome-shell randomly blocks mouse clicks from working in app windows

2021-03-03 Thread Daniel van Vugt
There are enough comments above suggesting the bug also occurs in Xorg
sessions. Wayland does not seem to be the cause.

That said, this bug is now 8 years old so it's reasonably likely that it
has had multiple different causes (really multiple different bugs) over
the years.

Sorry, I was imagining a different error screen and couldn't see that
error message in the attached video. It's a bit blurry but I will assume
that's it...

Since there doesn't seem to be any crash there's no longer any reason to
keep this separate from bug 1917178.
