The drm_mode_get_hv_timing() function (used in the required kernel
commit) depends on a non trivial amount of other changes, and I don't
think a backport would be easy, or safe. That commit will be available
in Linux 4.17, though, so we are going to get the fix in Ubuntu 18.10.

  This happened after I entered the password to unlock the screensaver
  (note that this was not after a suspend/resume cycle). The unlock screen
  froze for some time (after displaying asterisks to represent some of the
  password), then went black, then came back (displaying more asterisks
  this time), then went black, then gnome-shell crashed and burned and I
  found this in /var/crash when I logged back in.
