[Bug 1534645] [NEW] Cannot easily preserve a keyring to be only unlocked manually

2016-01-15 Thread Andreas E.
Public bug reported:

Assume you want to create a keyring for secrets that you only need
rarely and thus want to access only on demand (not unlock on every login
session).

Whenever you access/unlock the keyring for the first, second, etc. time,
the "Unlock keyring" dialog asks for the password and has a preselected
checkbox "Automatically unlock this keyring whenever I'm logged in".
This is however not the current setting for this keyring, so it
constitutes a change of a setting, which counteracts the (likely)
intention of the user.

It is to easily to type the password and hit enter, thereby changing
this keyring to an automatically unlocked one, and this risk happens
repeatedly everytime you unlock it. In case you forgot to uncheck the
checkbox, the only way to restore the original setting is hidden (not in
keyring → properties, but only by setting a new password).

A security-focused application should also not have defaults that tend to
decrease security in favor of usability.
Having the checkbox preselected gains less extra usability (for the case the
user wants to change the keyring to be automatically unlocked: 1 click saved)
than that it decreases usability (in case the user wants to keep the keyring
manual: 1 click everytime to unselect it).

A possible fix is to not preselect the checkbox.

version 3.10.2 in Ubuntu 14.04 as well as in the version in Ubuntu 15.10

[Bug 1314556] Re: Unable to mount Android MTP device

2016-01-15 Thread Roger Lipscombe
I'm having the same problem with both my 2012 Nexus 7 and my HTC One M8.

If I connect the device, I get the error message "Unable to mount
Android Phone: Unable to open MTP device '[usb:005,120]'" for my HTC One
M8. The message changes to "Unable to mount Nexus 7" when I plug the
Nexus 7 in. The '[usb:005,120]' identifier also changes.

(All of the following was done with the HTC phone...)

But here's the interesting part: if I run "lsusb" with the error message
on the screen, the device is detected one ID higher. Right now, "lsusb"
is showing "Bus 005 Device 121: ID 0bb4:061a HTC (High Tech Computer
Corp.)" for the phone. Using "ls -l /dev/bus/usb/X/Y" gives:

$ ls -l /dev/bus/usb/005/120
ls: cannot access /dev/bus/usb/005/120: No such file or directory
$ ls -l /dev/bus/usb/005/121
crw-rw+ 1 root audio 189, 632 Jan 15 20:59 /dev/bus/usb/005/121

dmesg gives the following:

$ dmesg
[ 3202.628185] usb 5-2: new high-speed USB device number 122 using xhci_hcd
[ 3202.650762] usb 5-2: New USB device found, idVendor=0bb4, idProduct=061a

[ 3203.598667] usb 5-2: Product: Android Phone
[ 3203.598670] usb 5-2: Manufacturer: HTC

(I've deleted the 'SerialNumber' lines; I don't know if they're
sensitive or not)

Another time I tried to reproduce the dmesg output, I got:

[ 3271.638047] xhci_hcd :08:00.0: xHCI xhci_drop_endpoint called with
disabled ep 88056c19e040

I don't know if that's related. It doesn't always appear in dmesg.

I'm actually using Linux Mint, as follows:

[Bug 341725] Re: Can't save changes in VirtualBox Shared Folder. Nano, OOo do it.

2016-01-15 Thread JP Vossen
My use case is a Mint 17.x VM using a VirtualBox vboxsf to a Win8.1
host. I had this same problem in Geany and it was driving me insane
until I found
http://wiki.geany.org/config/all_you_never_wanted_to_know_about_file_saving
and then "Edit > Prefs > Various > use_atomic_file_saving: checked"
fixed it for me. Be sure to read the URL as there are implications.
Obviously this does not fix Gedit but it may be an acceptable work-
around for some people.

[Bug 34813] Re: gedit fails to save files over smbfs/cifs

2016-01-15 Thread JP Vossen
My use case is a Mint 17.x VM using a VirtualBox vboxsf to a Win8.1
host. I had this same problem in Geany and it was driving me insane
until I found
http://wiki.geany.org/config/all_you_never_wanted_to_know_about_file_saving
and then "Edit > Prefs > Various > use_atomic_file_saving: checked"
fixed it for me. Be sure to read the URL as there are implications.
Obviously this does not fix Gedit but it may be an acceptable work-
around for some people.
