When deciding this, the argument should probably not focus too much on my (Joachim's) situation because now that I have this setting it is not a big deal to keep it. The case is much more serious for somebody who attempts to install Debian on a system that has this problem. In that case the X Window system will appear not to work and only an expert will be able to get it working. This will probably depend on how widespread the problem is likely to be in the field. That may help. This didn't help. Another option would be to try the various displaypriority options (see the radeon man page). Both DisplayPriority "HIGH" and DisplayPriority "BIOS" seem to work.
