I found the underlying root cause and the fix by chance when trawling the web for something else. The issue is compositing in the window manager. If compositing is enabled the video WILL tear. If compositing is disabled the videos display correctly. Definitely the case for xfce4. -- Anton R. Ivanov https://www.kot-begemot.co.uk/

Bug#805605: marked as done (xserver-xorg-core: crash/freeze on logout of tty that was previously serving as a vt for X)

The problem I'm seeing occurs if I have >1 X server running and decide to terminate one of them. I can successfully terminate the one I want and I'm dropped back into the tty from which I launched the xserver. However, if I then logout of this tty (ctrl-d or exit), I'm not left with a login prompt on that same tty. Instead, control jumps to one of the still-running X servers, although now I'm unable to provide user input. The server does not seem to be frozen though since I'm still able to view time display ticks. If I attempt to switch to a different tty/vt (ctrl-alt-n) there is no change in display. I can, however, 'switch' to the current 'automatically-switched-to' X server and the screen goes black, indicating some sort of crash, although none is indicated in Xorg logs. Once in this black-screen state, I'm still able to chvt to another tty/vt, but switching back to the crashed vt, still results in the same black-screen state. -- Package-specific info: X server symlink status: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Aug 31 15:18 /etc/X11/X -> /usr/bin/Xorg -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 274 Oct 27 18:43 /usr/bin/Xorg VGA-compatible devices on PCI bus: -- 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Broadwell-U Integrated Graphics [8086:1616] (rev 09) /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist. I try to explain: I login in my openbox session on tty1 using startx, and in tty2 I run some program, say 'moc'. When I logout from tty2, I get immediately switched to tty1 and logged out from my openbox session. That is what happens in my Sid guest. I have same problem in my Sid host, but instead of being logged out from my openbox session, I get switched to it being in frozen state (Iget switched to tty1 and I get my openbox session frozen) and I am forced to use 'reisub'. Note that: 1. if I don't 'exit' my tty2 session, I can switch between tty1 (openbox session) and tty2, or any other Console, just fine. 2. if I use a DM (I use wdm), I have no problems at all. 3. I sent this bug report from my Sid guest. Please, let me know if you need more info/details.
