Bug#802186: xserver-xorg-video-ati: Complete system lockup after some time when using radeon driver in xorg.conf

2015-10-18 Thread Gianluca Renzi
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:7.5.0-1+b1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

the latest xorg driver suffers a couple of severity issues and they can lead to
a unusable X setup, or a
complete locked-up system (only hard reset is the only way to recover from
this...)

1- It seems the xorg probe procedure is unable to create a valid xorg
configuration if there is no /etc/X11/xorg at all.
This issue can be workarounded creating a simple and valid xorg.conf with a
valid BusID card location.
If BusID is missing the Xorg crashes with a segfault. Not a big issue for
me...

2- when the radeon driver in xorg.conf is used, the system is usable for 30/45
minutes (even if it remains in idle for most
of the time) then hangs. All resources are locked, and curiously if a audio
playing was running a DMA-loop-whatever
is playing the last chunk of audio-data in the audio buffer. I suspect a
complete CPU hang.
The system is using the drm radeon driver as usual and no problems when
starting-up the system.
If I switch to fbdev in xorg.conf (i.e. it still uses the kernel drm driver
anyway) the system runs fine forever...
This architecture has two video boards installed: a NVIDIA 6600 with
OpenFirmware Flash in the slower PCI-E Bus 8X and
   a BIOS Flashed ATI-RadeonHD 4670 in the faster bus lane PCI-E 16X.

3- The kernel cmdline is the following:
   video=offb:off nouveau.modeset=1 nouveau.noaccel=1 radeon.modeset=1
radeon.agpmode=-1 fastboot loglevel=3

Not speaking about the 3d Mesa/Gallium support that it is *COMPLETELY BROKEN*
here. But this is another story.

Sorry to say, but thats BS. I am running X on sid right now without
being root. No logind installed.

If the xinit package depends upon either logind or xserver-xorg-\
legacy to work, then its dependecies should say so. There is
surely no "root-only" mentioned in startx(1) or xinit(1).

-
-quilt is actually invoked by the Debian X packaging through a larger
-set of scripts called XSFBS. XSFBS brings some other X specific
-features such as managing dependencies and conflicts due to the video
-and input driver ABIs.
-XSFBS itself is maintained in a separate repository at
- git://git.debian.org/pkg-xorg/xsfbs.git
-and it is pulled inside the other Debian X repositories when needed.
-
-The XSFBS patching system requires a build dependency on quilt. Also
-a dependency on $(STAMP_DIR)/patch has to be added to debian/rules
-so that the XSFBS patching occurs before the actual build. So the
-very first target of the build (likely the one running autoreconf)
-should depend on $(STAMP_DIR)/patch. It should also not depend on
-anything so that parallel builds are correctly supported (nothing
-should probably run while patching is being done). And finally, the
-clean target should depend on the xsfclean target so that patches
-are unapplied on clean.
-
-When the upstream sources contain some DFSG-nonfree files, they are
-listed in text files in debian/prune/ in the "debian-*" branch of
-the Debian repository. XSFBS' scripts then take care of removing
-these listed files during the build so as to generate a modified
-DFSG-free .orig.tar.gz tarball.

Bug#802275: xserver-xorg-core: X crashes after X -configure

2015-10-18 Thread Christian Stalp
Package: xserver-xorg-core
Version: 2:1.17.2-3
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

   * What led up to the situation?
I wanted to create a new xorg.conf for my Thinkpad X60s and my 19" display
attached to the docking station. In order to do that, I followed this
guideline: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I stoped the X-server with "service lightdm stop" and put in "X -configure"

   * What was the outcome of this action?
I got this error-dump without special information:

  * debian/rules: Make /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc executable to make lintian happy

But on two of my Debian/unstable machines, /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc is

executable. Such an inconsistency is quite bad for maintenance.

Package: xinit
Version: 1.3.4-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

As of my most recent sid upgrade, startx stopped working.
The problem turned out to be that it no longer supports redirection.

I was logging in to tty1 and running this in my .zlogin:

startx >& $HOME/.xsession-errors

As of the upgrade to the "run as user" X server, X fails to start.
It pauses for 5-10 seconds, then exits, leaving the terminal
settings wrong so I have to run reset.

.local/share/xorg/Xorg.0.log says:

[  1000.714] (++) using VT number 1

[ 1000.714] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[ 1000.714] (EE) xf86OpenConsole: VT_ACTIVATE failed: Operation not permitted
[ 1000.714] (EE)

Running simply startx, without the redirect, works. But of course I
can no longer check output from programs run inside X.

Some comments on the web suggest that startx -- -keeptty will allow
redirection, but man xinit warns:
This option is only useful when debugging the server.
Not all platforms support (or can use) this option.
so it seems like that might not be a good long-term option.

Redhat claims to have a fix for the redirection problem:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1177513#c5
I can't verify whether their fix actually fixes the issue (and I'm
not sure how to find the actual code change involved in the fix,
or whether it was pushed upstream, though I'm guessing not since
that was back in January so Debian hopefully would have it by now).

I haven't been able to find any other way besides redirection to get
stdout and stderr for programs run inside X. Is there a new and
improved way that would make redirection unnecessary?

Adam Jackson (1):
  xinit 1.0.8

David Nusinow (1):
  Unbreak installs on non-launchd systems

James Cloos (1):
Add missing PHONY line for automatic ChangeLog generation

Jeremy Huddleston (19):
Added some support for Xquartz on OS-X.
  Added Apple launchd support
Changed x11-exec to actually start X11.app. X11.app will be responsible
for calling xinit.
OS-X: Added argv[0] hack for finding Xquartz UI and icon as well as
claiming its dock icon
Added support for OS-X preferences to disable tcp/ip connections and xauth
OS-X: Made defaults test more robust
OS-X: Need to use bash --login to setup the environment from launchd.
XQuartz doesn't need the -launchd command line argument anymore.

choose a valid $display for fast-user-switching.
OS-X: Add bindir to $PATH in startx if it's not there
  OS-X: Fixed typo
OS-X: Set fontpath in xinitrc to include system / user fonts.
Additionally fixed font scaling issues (trac #52)
Apple: use -nocpp arg to xrdb if cpp is not installed

Apple: Support spaces in $HOME for font path, and remove duplicate entry
  Added org.x.X11.plist.cpp to EXTRA_DIST
  Apple: font caching and defaults
Apple: Adding support for an xinitrc.d directory on OSX, so fink doesn't

Apple: Use -c in the launchd plist, so broken .profile/.bashrc don't much
up startx

Changes since xinit-1.1.0:
Alan Coopersmith (1):
Fix build of startx & xinitrc with Solaris make

Jeremy Huddleston (17):

get a stray process warning in their system log.
startx.cpp: Made some things a little more friendly for people who have
spaces in pathnames.
Apple: Using eval to protect people who have spaces in their home path.
Support the instant-off API in SnowLeopard.
Apple: sleep() to avoid innocent error message spew
Apple: Make VPATH builds work on darwin
Apple: Use AvailabilityMacros.h for Tiger compatability
  OSX: Create privleged_startx on Tiger
  OSX Tiger: More compilation fixes...
OSX Tiger: Hopefully the last fix for Tiger users...
Apple: Honor X11_PREFS_DOMAIN if it's set (1.4.2-apple26 and later)
OSX Tiger: Fix discovery of mach port
  OSX: Fixed bad prefix
  OSX: More prefix fixes

Apple: Use CFProcessPath instead of argv[0] trick.

+startx: Fix startx picking an already used display number when -nolock is
used
+
+Currently startx relies on /tmp/.X?-lock being present for automatically
+picking a free display number. This does not work if -nolock is used when
+starting the server, or if the server is started with -displayfd as
-displayfd
+implies -nolock.
+
+This is becoming a problem now that -displayfd is getting used by
+display-managers (e.g. gdm), this fixes this by also checking for
+/tmp/.X11-unix/X?
