I believe that's pretty much expected. mach64 dri was never merged in
linux upstream iirc.

Can you check if
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-mach64/commit/?id=2c83b465b336a012f2d2716940bf483358388000
fixes the crash?

Unfortunately it wasn't kept, because when I logged in just after
the crash, Iceweasel froze most of the parts of the window manager
(I could only switch the desktops) and I rebooted the machine.

Bug#726839: xserver-xorg-video-sis depends on old xorg-video-abi-12 under unstable

2013-10-19 Thread Javier Vasquez
Package: xserver-xorg-video-sis
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

On loongson-2f mini-pc, which uses SIS video card, it's not possible
to upgrade Xorg packages ata all, given xserver-xorg-video-sis depends
on an old xorg-video-abi-12, which is no longer provided by upgradable
Xorg packages.

For this fuloong mini-pc it's important to keep SIS video driver up to
date as long with the rest of Xorg packages.

See next:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 xserver-xorg-video-sis : Depends: xorg-video-abi-12 which is a virtual package.

BTW, how in the world is one to tell the version of xmessage in a
formal way on debian then? One sees some note of it in the man page
trailers, but that is not a formal way.

Bonjour,
I would like to take snapshots of an animated window.
Searching the net, I could not find a program to do so. But I found
evidence that other people where looking for the same functionnality.
It is possible but very slow to use a shell loop to do so. I could
whip a small patch to enable this feature. I you are interested, I
maybe could update the man page.

The new option are :
-n number of snapshots (defaults to 1)
-w number of microseconds to wait between snapshots
-out file is now mandatory if more than one snapshots are to be taken.
It is then prefixed with the image number.

Be indulgent with my code, I haven't coded in C for ages.
I could be more efficient, but I went for the simple approach.

Hoping to be helpful,
Bernard

When xclock updates the display, it updates to the current
time. Then it waits (for 1 minute, by default).
At the end of the minute, xclock is 1 minute slow.

Thus, on average, xclock is 30 seconds behind the times.

If xclock updated the time so that it was half of the update
interval *ahead* of real time, then at the end of the
interval it would be only 30s slow,
and it would be correct, on average.

I noticed this at midnight, on New Year's.
Looked like a bloody fool, when the big high-tech
computer clock was still reading 11:59, while everyone
was making noise and toasting.

Also, these days, we can probably afford the CPU cycles
to update the xclock face more often, say once every 10 seconds,
by default.

When remapping the "\|" key to the "Backspace" key and vice versa on a standard
US 104 keyboard using:

xmodmap -e 'keycode 22 = backslash bar'
xmodmap -e 'keycode 51 = BackSpace'

Pressing "backspace" generates "\" when pressed as expected.
Pressing "Shift+backspace" does not generate "|", as expected. Pressing
"Shift+<|\>" also does not generate "|". This behavior has been
reported to function as expected to me since at lease XFree 3.3.x
but not >=4.3

Output of xev after remaping, upon pressing "backspace":

KeyPress event, serial 25, synthetic NO, window 0x1c1,
root 0x48, subw 0x0, time 4265320, (674,173), root:(677,243),

This appears to be distro & kernel independant, leading me to beleive
it's a problem in the upstream code.

When I run, for example, 'xset blah', I see the following in my

Somewhere in the terminal's scrollback buffer is the line "xset:
unknown option blah". Why should I have to scroll backwards to see it?
My theory is that at one point xset had such a short usage string that
the developers thought, "Gee, it would be convenient if we printed a
usage message, for quick reference, whenever there was an argument
parsing error." But now the usage string has grown so long that this
argument is no longer valid. The usage message should be secondary to
the actual error message, but instead it takes up so much space that
it makes the error message harder to read. This is especially tiresome
when one is trying to specify a complicated command line, and must
keep scrolling up past the usage message to see what went wrong.

I can think of two solutions. My preferred solution would be to modify
xset to recognize '-h' and '--help', and to only print the usage
message when one of these is specified on the command line (the same
behavior, as, for instance, gcc). (A shorter version of the usage
message could be printed when there is an error, although I would be
happiest if nothing were printed but the error message.) Another
possibility would be to modify xset to print the error message after
the usage message, rather than before, so that the user doesn't have
to scroll backwards to see the error message.

Our control keys have died and there is no keyboard store on the island.
Our eyes spot a key with the Windows(TM) logo on it that we never use.
We wish to make this Windows key into a spare control key.
$ man xmodmap et. al. don't even say what the name of this key is.
xev shows that it is called Super_L.
Our wild guess modeled on xmodmap's "Swap Caps_Lock and Control_L"
example fail. Also we don't need to do a full swap. The solution to
the above sounds like a good example for the xmodmap man page.

Long one line message lines in "warnShell" will go off the edge of the
screen leaving the user no way to see them in full.

Nor does there seem a way to use cut and paste to save what it says.

P.S., these days there is a warnShell, no three, for every man page I
try, telling me to clear the [something].

Ah,
$ which xman|xargs strings|egrep -i compres\|wrong ...
Something went wrong in retrieving the %s

Any thing special in /tmp? Mention it. Maybe

/tmp Xman creates temporary files in /tmp for all
unformatted man pages and all apropos

OK, but I don't see any of those files there.
Starting xman as root didn't help either.

One notes the man page doesn't explicitly say
$ xmodmap
with no options will print the present state.
It just says "The xmodmap program is used to edit and display"...

But what was mainly bugging me was xmodmap acts like all is hunky dory
if one forgets the "-" meaning stdin.

$ echo ANYBODY HOME?|xmodmap|sum; echo $?
33830 1

$ xmodmap|sum; echo $?

I wish it would print an error.

Hello,

a small problem with the menu entry for xconsole in xbase-clients:
normal user can't/shouldn't use it, but with the actual conf, only
root can use this from the window menu. Why not define it using sudo,
so that selected users can access it directly from the menu ? Patch
included to show how I implemented it locally.

Best regards

Pascal Dupuis

I just tried to find out how to let xclock show the time of different
timezones and didn't find anything at first. Please consider the attached
patch to the xclock man page to document that you can use the TZ variable for
that.

Apparently, if there's more than 32768 fonts available to the X server,
xfontsel doesn't see all of them.

Here's the actual number of fonts on my machine:

$ xlsfonts | wc -l
33412

If I run xfontsel, it says: 32741 names match.

We see "Processing fonts..." and wait and wait and wait.
Only later do we notice a "no fonts match" in the upper right corner!
So either put both messages in the same place or replace the first
with the second.

Also allow a "q" or RET from the keyboard to quit. Some users can

(Architecture: sparc, but I don't think it matters)

All line numbers emitted by xmodmap are counted from zero, which is extremely
confusing since editors count lines starting with 1. Also things like compilers
which emit error messages use 1 as the first line.

This can be seen if you use -v, or if you have an input file with an error,
and it's pretty obvious from the xmodmap source.

(Aside: it would be nice if it were easier to (1) just build a single
binary package from the xfree source package and (2) if it were easier
to see the source, ie it didn't come as a .tgz file inside the source
archive...)

The way ssh-agent is started in 90xfree86-common_ssh-agent is not very
flexible. In particular it makes it impossible to start extra processes
like an xterm or two that would inherit the SSH_XXX environment
variables.

So what I propose is the following:

 * Replace 90xfree86-common_ssh-agent with the following
--- cut here ---
SSHAGENT=/usr/bin/ssh-agent
SSHAGENTARGS=

if grep -qs ^use-ssh-agent "$OPTIONFILE"; then
  if [ -x "$SSHAGENT" -a -z "$SSH_AUTH_SOCK" -a -z "$SSH2_AUTH_SOCK" ]; then
if [ -f /usr/bin/ssh-add1 ] && cmp -s "$SSHAGENT" /usr/bin/ssh-agent2; then
  # use ssh-agent2's ssh-agent1 compatibility mode
  SSHAGENTARGS=-1
fi
  fi
fi
eval `"$SSHAGENT" -s $SSHAGENTARGS` >/dev/null
--- cut here ---

   'ssh-agent -s' outputs a mini-script that sets the SSH_XXX variables.
Our eval runs this code which sets the environment variables in the
current shell.

 * Add a 99xfree86-common_start script to actually invoke REALSTARTUP
--- cut here ---
exec $REALSTARTUP
--- cut here ---

 * Then, between 90 and 99 administrators are free to add whatever
scripts they want to run in the ssh-agent environment.

Next I'll send an example taking advantage of this.

Package: xinit
Version: 1.0.7-2
Severity: normal

For those of us who choose not to start X every boot using xdm, we
don't get the X session being logged in the wtmp database like it does
from xdm.

Because X can be started and the parent shell subsequently exited, the
lack of an entry in wtmp gives the sysadmin a false impression that
noone is actually logged into the system when it comes time for them
to do maintenance and rebooting.

xdm has its mechanism in /etc/X11/xdm/{Xstartup,Xreset} to log the
details using sessreg - it would be good if startx could make use of a
similar scheme too.

Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.1.0-16
Severity: important
File: /usr/X11R6/bin/xmodmap

Hi!

The xmodmap's manpage is unclear, vague, and confusing, to say the
least. I don't understand e.g. what the keysym columns are for--in one
place, the manpage reads:

| The first keysym is used when no modifier key is pressed in conjunction
| with this key, the second with Shift, the third when the Mode_Switch key
| is used with this key and the fourth when both the Mode_Switch and Shift
| keys are used.

But further on, I learned that:

| [A]pplications that need a Meta key simply need to get the keycode and
| don't require the keysym to be in the first column of the keymap
| table. This means that applications that are looking for a Multi_key
| (including the default modifier map) won't notice any change.
|
| % xmodmap -e "keysym Multi_key = Multi_key Meta_L"

What the h*** is this?

Yours Completely Confused,
Jan.

Package: libx11
Version: 2:1.3.3-3
Severity: wishlist

(Disclaimer: I really don't care about these locales. Not even a little
bit. However, Robert Collins added them to Ubuntu and I feel bad
carrying them forward in a merge without sending them to Debian in the
process. He may have sent them upstream too - I'm not sure, I'm
afraid.)

The attached patches add support for the Latin (la_AU.UTF-8) and Klingon
(tlh_GB.UTF-8) locales.

Thanks,

Package: xserver-xorg-input-evdev
Version: 1:2.2.2-1
Severity: normal

I don't know if this is the right package to file against, but it
seems the most likely. When I start X I run xmodmap to do a bit
of setup:

remove Lock = Caps_Lock
keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L
add Lock = Caps_Lock
add Control = Control_L
keysym Super_R = XF86Back
keysym Menu = XF86Forward

(Maps caps lock to control, sets the silly windows keys to
go forwards and backwards in Firefox)
Since a recent dist-upgrade (I'm not sure exactly which - I
dist-upgrade regularly but often don't restart X), I'm finding
that I frequently lost these mappings. Additionally, when I try
to rerun xmodmap to restore them, I sometimes get some unexpected
error messages (maybe unexpected just because I don't really
understand the X keyboard model):

$ xmodmap etc/xmodmap.d/common
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:1: bad keysym in remove modifier list
'Caps_Lock', no corresponding keycodes
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:2: bad keysym target keysym 'Caps_Lock', no
corresponding keycodes
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:5: bad keysym target keysym 'Super_R', no
corresponding keycodes
xmodmap: etc/xmodmap.d/common:6: bad keysym target keysym 'Menu', no
corresponding keycodes

Rerunning xmodmap sometimes works, sometimes doesn't, and sometimes
leaves the keyboard in a bit of a funny state. For instance,
currently, my caps lock key is correctly functioning as control,
but it still toggles the caps lock light on my keyboard.

This all may be due to the fact that my (USB) keyboard seems to
detach and reconnect sometimes, but I don't think that should be
relevant - I can unplug and replug a PS/2 keyboard without
resetting key mappings.

Any hints about what my be going on would be appreciated, but the
current behavior seems wrong - I've been running essentially the
same X setup for over a decade and haven't seen this sort of
behavior before.

Since 2002-09-28 (/usr/share/doc/coreutils/changelog.gz) mkdir from
coreutils supports the creation of directory hierarchies with a switch.

Therefore there is no need for mkdirhier, except to confuse people into
using it and depending on xutils.

I discovered that xev has an -id option, which I hoped I could use to
debug the behavior of an application by recording the exact events it
received. However, when I run it on, say, an xterm, I don't get any
ButtonPress or ButtonRelease events. When I press a button, I do get
LeaveNotify, EnterNotify, and KeymapNotify events.

There is probably some fundamental reason for this that can't be fixed,
but I'm reporting it just in case. Maybe it should be documented.
Also, I found that I can get the information I want from xtrapout.
