Bug#576326: xserver-xorg: keys repeat without being held down

2010-04-03 Thread James Cameron
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.5+5
Severity: normal

infrequently, roughly once or twice a day, a keyboard key will begin to repeat
without being held down.

another key press cancels the repeating symptom.

the symptom occurs more frequently with xterm, wmaker, and mplayer.

the symptom is more likely to occur if the system has been placed under memory
pressure, such as a backup, playback of a DVB-T transport stream, or a kernel
compile.

in three scenarios has the symptom been observed:

1. while scp'ing a large file from another host, while playing a television
programme using mplayer, pressing the "f" key to toggle between fullscreen and
partial screen ... mplayer responded by oscillating between the two sizes until
another key was pressed,

2. while doing a backup with tar, and no active screen use, pressing F12 to
start an xterm (via a wmaker key definition), resulted in several hundred
xterm's being forked, until an out-of-memory condition was triggered,

3. while playing a video with mplayer, pressing 'q' to quit, mplayer properly
quits, and then finding the 'q' begins to repeat in the xterm that was being
mplayer's window.

Arthur HUILLET (1):
  nv10exa: improve codestyle

Ben Skeggs (144):
  kms: don't try transition when we don't have src+dst buffer ids
  nv50: initial support for depth 30
  kms: fix CRTC offset when rotation enabled
  Cull everything in !pNv->randr12_enabled blocks
  Remove nv_dac.c
  Nuke nv_hw.c, and a heap of unused vars from NVRec
  Rip out vgaHW + more unused vars from NVRec
  Some more bits of NVRec to go...
  Remove non-XSERVER_LIBPCIACCESS paths, we depend on a new xserver anyway
  No need for pci access wrappers now..
  Update manpage + finish removing useless options
  dri2: fix for xserver abi change
  Fix build with xextproto 7.1
  kms: don't pin scanout buffer, no need, kernel will do it
  xv: don't pin buffer unless using the overlay
  nv30: don't pin shader memory
  nv50: explicitly pin scanout buffer in non-kms path
  remove remains of prehistoric NOUVEAU_EXA_PIXMAPS stuff
  exa: only allow driver pixmaps when KMS enabled
  nv50: no need to pin rotate scanout buffers on creation now
  nv04-nv40: explicitly pin scanout buffer when required
  remove pinned creation from nodrm path
  no need to pin GART bo
  remove explicit pin of pNv->FB on creation
  exa: only support driver pixmaps on servers with CreatePixmap2
  exa: remove ModifyPixmapHeader hook, it's not required
  exa: fix nouveau_exa_pixmap_is_onscreen() for driver pixmaps
  Don't set driver pixmaps enabled with NoAccel
  nv50: fix a number of tiled buffer sizing issues in kms paths
  nv50/xv: attempt sync-to-vblank if driver pixmaps are being used
  Fix a DRM vs DDX confusion typo
  kms: don't skip resize call if we don't have a backing bo for screen
pixmap
  Wrap CreateScreenResources and set screen pixmap's BO there
  kms: keep rotate buffer pitch in crtc struct, rather than recalculating
  Warning fixes
  Fix typo exposed by removal of NV_* card type defines from DRM header
  exa: use PixmapIsOffscreen hook for non-driver pixmaps path too
  exa: allow acceleration to rotation bo
  rename pNv->FB to pNv->offscreen
  xv: fix some badness in nv3x/nv4x textured video adaptors

  Allocate scanout buffer independently of EXA offscreen area
  Switch to using scanout buffer detached from EXA offscreen memory area
  Cleanup
  Fix build with 0.0.15
  kms: implement framebuffer resize without driver pixmaps
  We already map offscreen and store the virtual, no need to keep doing it
  dri1: dodgyness to "survive" a framebuffer resize (or rather, move)
  kms: simplify drmmode_is_rotate_pixmaps args
  kms: implement rotation support without driver pixmaps
  More fixing of pitches + use 0x7000 tile_flags for tiled 16bpp on nv50
  kms: only use rounded height for allocation
  nv50: tile scanout buffer for "classic" exa if xserver new enough
  free scanout buffer in NVUnmapMem()
  non-kms fb resize

  Switch on can_resize for non-kms
  Point fb at the correct buffer..
  Fix up screen pixmap's devPrivate.ptr after resize
  NoAccel + wfb == bad idea
  Fix NoAccel/ShadowFB with fb resize
  Don't allocate offscreen memory or GART when using NoAccel
  Recalculate displayWidth if we do a late NoAccel fallback
  xv: fix check for offscreen pixmaps
  xv: really fix offscreen pixmap calculation
  zfill scanout buffer, not offscreen
  dri2: remove support for < version 3
  dri2: merge DRI2BufferRec and nouveau_dri2_buffer into a single struct
  dri2: fix CopyRegion()
  No wfb without KMS
  nv50: deal with framebuffer resize for !kms_enable
  nv04-nv40: deal with framebuffer resize in !kms_enable mode

I'd like something which is guaranteed to work. "which" was, "type"
isn't...

Another way would be to run xrdb -help >/dev/null 2>&1 and test the
result of that.

we went from:

if has xrdb; then
  if has sysresources; then
xrdb -merge sysresources
  fi
  if want userresources and has userresources; then
xrdb -merge userresources
  fi
else
  warn
fi

to

if has sysresources and has xrdb; then
  xrdb -merge sysresources
fi
if want userresources and has userresources; then
  if has xrdb; then
xrdb -merge userresources
  else
warn
  fi

The changelog says this was to avoid testing for xrdb if ~/.Xresources
doesn't exist. But we'll keep testing for xrdb anyway, since we'll
pretty much always have /etc/X11/Xresources/. So you'll still run the
exact same tests.

Plus there's a behaviour change in the new version which only warns when
~/.Xresources exists and is enabled.

So I'm still not convinced this reordering provides any gain. Not a big
deal though.

Cheers,
Julien

my changes against the latest revisions of the plugins should prevent
accidental breakages in case versions aren't migrated/available at the
same time.

At the moment, 2.9 means we can go for KMS as the default, while still
allowing people to switch back to UMS, should they wish to do so.

Not sure how the situation is going to evolve, though.

"echo -e '\a'" with visual bell off fails to illicit any sound.

1) "xkbbell" causes a beep
2) "beep" causes a beep (although of a different tone)
3) "echo -e '\a'" in "pterm" causes a beep (same as xkbbell)
4) Trying to search for a non-present string in firefox causes a beep
(same as xkbbell)

I'm using a kernel compiled from vanilla 2.6.32.8 sources and the pcspkr
module from that to ensure console beeps.

~/.inputrc has "set bell-style audible" to ensure readline causes beeps

The only output of "xrdb -query | grep -i bell" is:
XTerm*visualBell:   false

If I toggle visual bell on in an xterm (using the Ctrl+Middle menu)
and reissue "echo -e '\a'" I 'see' the beep.

This was working until late last year. Unfortunately I didn't realise
exactly when it stopped working (as I don't always perform an action
that would cause such a beep on a day to day basis). The system has been
tracking testing on a more or less daily basis since around June 2009.

RadeonHD seems to have troubles talking to the kernel, and you report
a bug against the Radeon driver?

Did you mean to report a bug against the -radeonhd package instead?
Anyway, given -radeon is currently actively developed, you probably
want to use radeon anyway.

Bug#561185: xkb-data: support custom layouts

2010-04-03 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

Shai Berger  (15/12/2009):
> […] and I don't want to modify the files under /usr -- which I must

you probably could use dpkg-divert to have your modified file
preserved during upgrades?

> https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20743

> business".

I think if one is skilled enough to modify this file to support a
custom layout, one should be expected to deal with such a modified

could you please install xserver-xorg-core-dbg and get a full

 .
   [ Sven Joachim ]
   * New upstream snapshot, compatible with xorg-server 1.7 (Closes: #568168).
   * Ship an upstream changelog generated from "git log".
   * Do not include other generated files in the .orig.tar.gz,
 run autoreconf at build time instead.
   * Update xsfbs to 2a1b4553fc2c5ba982e8bb8be4c504e28ce79ed1.
   * Remove dependency on linux-nouveau-modules, current Debian kernels
 already include a nouveau module.
   * Fold long (Build-)Depends lines in debian/control.
   * Bump Build-dependencies on xserver-xorg-dev and libdrm-dev.
   * Drop conflict with nvidia-glx. As long as one does not run
 applications that require a library that nvidia-glx diverts, the
 drivers can coexist peacefully.
   * Provide a minimal example xorg.conf.
   * Bump Standards-Version to 3.8.4, no changes needed.
 .
   [ Cyril Brulebois ]
   * Use build/ instead of obj-$(DEB_BUILD_GNU_TYPE)/.
   * Delete the .la file after make install and use dh_install's
 --fail-missing instead of --list-missing, just to make sure.
   * Pass --warnings=6 to dpkg-shlibd

Bug#575415: Xorg Log Files

2010-04-03 Thread Michael Papet
Attempts to start X without an xorg.conf result in a locked system and
Xorg.0.log file(s) 10's of megabytes in size.

Until I can get the file chopped down to something useful, this is what's
repeated. It fills most of the file.

If I disable glx, X start fine, no acceleration.

JFTR, seems to be missing -ldl & -lpthread. Can be triggered using
LDFLAGS="-Wl,-z,defs" ./autogen.sh … in debian/rules.

Bug#561185: xkb-data: support custom layouts

I could, but it would be fragile; it wouldn't survive the next xkb-files-
rearrangement. Also, I wouldn't be receiving any updates to the base layout
which I am extending in a variant (I could get around that, and the need to
dpkg-divert, by simply using a private base layout; however, this would make
things even more fragile, pulling any rug left from under the feet of
#574590).

Is there another way to system-widely support a custom layout, which I missed?

By "those things", do you mean my specific way of achieving custom layouts, or
custom layouts in general?

What I want is what we used to have -- that xkb layouts be considered as
configuration, rather than data. I realize you (and upstream) are
unsympathetic, but I do not understand why.

Thanks,
Shai.

you might have better luck with current Xorg components from unstable,
like kernel, libdrm, mesa, -radeon?

did you go upstream with that one? I guess it could indeed be useful
(poor poor poor intel users and their wedged GPUs…), but bugs.fdo is
definitely the place to go first, as you probably know by now. ;)

you may want to give a try to a kernel from unstable (2.6.32-4-$arch),
and to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau from experimental. Things are going
to be worked on in that direction, -nv has been declared deprecated.

http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15407 shows there might
be other bugs but I couldn't really find them (through a very and too
quick look); got any reference?

If you want to get that layout added, please open a bug upstream with
a patch. We could merge it in advance if it's well-received upstream.

Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 0.14.7~git20070706-2
Severity: normal

When I draw circles on my touchpad, they come out as rather tall
ellipses (perhaps twice as high as wide). If a full scroll from top
to bottom of the touchpad goes the full vertical distance on the
screen, then a full horizontal scroll only goes about halfway to 3/4
across the screen.

My left, right, top and bottom edges are the default and seem
reasonable:

LeftEdge= 1700
RightEdge   = 5300
TopEdge = 1700
BottomEdge  = 4200

and synclient -m 1 shows that moving over the full range of the pad
generates reasonble numbers correponding to the above.

Perhaps the wide touchpad combined with the wide display, and perhaps
an assumption that both are square is fouling the aspect ratio up, but
it would be nice nevertheless if the user could specify the MinSpeed
and MaxSpeeds for X and Y seperately, because even though I prefer the
aspect ratio to be such that circles draw circles, perhaps other
people don't like that.

I don't know whether any such differing multiplication factors would
want to apply to horizontal vs vertical scrolling. I suspect they are
fine as is.

So far I only know how to do this on MacOS X or in the yudit editor and

Hi,
the compiz metapackage actually depends only on compiz-gnome but it
should depends on something like "compiz-gnome|compiz-kde" because now
it brings a lot of gnome packages that aren't really needed.

Thanks,
Francesco

if you read its description, it aims at providing Gtk+Gnome
integration, by depending on both compiz-gtk & compiz-gnome. If you
want KDE things only, then install compiz-kde instead of compiz
itself?

I'm closing this bugreport since that sounds like it's not a bug (just
pick the package you're interested in, and everything should be
fine?).

I've been exercising graphics in qemu-kvm a bit more and have seen the

again if you want me to gather more information.
