The lower taskbar is not then at the bottom of the screen although the area under the lower taskbar is still usable and shows the background image. Also windows which are maximised only use the top part of the screen. This desktop system has one DVI output and one VGA output. The native res of the screen is 1280x1024. Normally I only connect the DVI cables. On Etch this was fine but now, with latest Lenny, only 1280x800 seems to be considered active/usable. This seems to be linked to the VGA output, which the driver sees as "disconnected" but still assigns a resolution which limits the other output. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 512058: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=512058 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati Version: 1:6.6.3-2 I have a Thinkpad T43p with an ATI FireGL V3200 graphics card. The system runs under etch (I upgraded from sarge some time ago), and I do an aptitude update/upgrade around once a day. I do not use packages from etch-backports or packages that I compiled myself. In my xorg.conf, I used the radeon driver, which works fine for the display of the laptop. Concerning the VGA port, there is however a strange behavior: (1) Let's say I boot the machine such that X is not started, connect a display or a projector and start X, then both the laptop display as well as the external display show the same picture (I use MergedFB with clone and do not use the option NoDCC). I can quit X and restart (having the external display connected when X starts), and things work fine. (2) Now I quit X, disconnect the external display, and start X again. Then I connect the external display as a test, but as the frequencies are not correct (strangely, the external display says that it receives a 1600x1200 picture, which is the natural resolution of the laptop display, independent of the current resolution on the laptop display). The important point here is not whether I actually connect the external display while X is running, just that X starts without an external display connected. Now I quit X. (3) I connect the external display and start X again. Then the strange thing comes: I get the proper picture on the laptop display, I get an external signal with the correct resolution and proper frequencies, but the external display is ENTIRELY BLACK! I can do now whatever I like, but the external display remains black. I can change the resolution and get black displays in different resolutions, and so on. The only thing that helps now is to reboot and get back to step (1). I am pretty puzzled by this behavior, which is 100% reproducible. Looking into the log files, there is no difference between restarting X as long as I remain within step (1) (with the exception of the very first start when drm is loaded). There is a difference between the log files produced in steps (1) and (2), as the driver states that no DCC can be loaded. There is, however, _no_ difference between log files in steps (1) and (3), so that the driver seems not to realize that there is a difference in the external VGA output. I do not include these log files here, but I can provide them if needed, or any other information that might be helpful. I understand that most people start X with a display connected, but for laptop users the present behavior is rather strange. I could live with the fact that I need to have the external display connected when X starts, but that I have to reboot the machine after erroneously starting X without an external display is pretty odd (I give a lot of talks with my laptop). I would guess (as I have played around a lot with the xorg.conf file in the last days, leaving the above behavior untouched) that the problem described here is quite general. It is not influenced by adding CRT2HSync to xorg.conf or similar measures. Note that the problem does not appear when using the fglrx driver instead of radeon. I tried that to see whether the graphic card is the issue or the driver. I cannot use fglrx, however, as I would need to compile the kernel module to get OpenGL hardware support (at least without the fglrx kernel module, I do not have OpenGL hardware support). > uname -a Linux mupfel 2.6.24-etchnhalf.1-686 #1 SMP Tue Dec 2 07:56:33 UTC 2008 i686 > dpkg -s libc6 | grep ^Version Version: 2.3.6.ds1-13etch8 --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- On Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 04:32:32PM -0500, Alex Deucher wrote: > On Fri, Jan 16, 2009 at 3:10 PM, Markus Porto > wrote: > > Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati > > Version: 1:6.6.3-2 > > Version 6.6.3 did not support dynamic display switching, so you had to > start the driver with all heads you wanted to use. xrandr 1.2 > (available with xserver 1.3 and newer and xf86-video-ati version 6.8.0 > and newer allows you to dynamically enable/disable output on the fly > using the xrandr. For years I've been running them off-screen using Xvfb. I start an instance: Xvfb :52 -screen 0 1024x768x24 -fbdir /tmp/xvfb.52 -ac and then run tests with "DISPLAY=:52". Recently I updated my debian testing system and the server has started crashing regularly after a few hundred tests have run. I tried building the version of the code being tested to a time before this problem started but it didn't help. Unfortunately I've been unable to reproduce the crash except by running all the tests (and eventually one crashes Xvfb but which one is not repeatable). However, I've localized the problem somewhat. The Xvfb process reports a bunch of these messages (about 1 per test): -- FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1; fixing. -- Later it reports a few messages of this form: -- [config/hal] couldn't initialise context: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.LimitsExceeded (Connection ":1.20" is not allowed to add more match rules (increase limits in configuration file if required)) -- and then crashes. If I stop the dbus daemon (/etc/init.d/dbus stop) the crash does not occur. I found some discussion about this error here: http://www.nabble.com/org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.LimitsExceeded-td17000158.html but didn't see much about fixing it. I used "apt-get source" for dbus and hal to build them with debug symbols and install them into my home directory. Using LD_LIBRARY_PATH I ran the system's Xvfb installation with my own dbus and hal libraries. Of course it stopped crashing. Then I discovered that if I use --localstatedir=/var when building dbus it crashes again. I'm pretty sure that's because it needs to see the file /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket Running with debug builds of the dbus and hal libraries let me get a partial backtrace for the segfault: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. I have the following synaptics configuration section in xorg.conf. Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad" Driver "synaptics" Option "Protocol" "auto-dev" Option "CorePointer" Option "SHMConfig""true" Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0" Option "RightEdge""5980" EndSection Here is output from "synclient -l | grep RightEdge" immediately after logging into a failsafe session: w...@braindead:~$ synclient -l | grep RightEdge RightEdge= 5300 This should be set to 5980 as per my xorg.conf configuration. Okay, if I now do "synclient RightEdge=5980" to override the default, the previous command returns the right thing and the edge scrolling works. w...@braindead:~$ synclient RightEdge=5980 w...@braindead:~$ synclient -l | grep RightEdge RightEdge= 5980 Okay, so now I logout of X, and it restarts coming back to my display manager. I then login to a failsafe session. The "synclient -l | grep RightEdge" command now returns the correct thing, but the edge scrolling does not work for some time. After that the edge scrolling starts working. The time ranges from very low (15-30 seconds) to much longer (multiple minutes). However, sometimes the edge scrolling does not start working at all. w...@braindead:~$ synclient -l | grep RightEdge RightEdge= 5980 If I turn off the SHMConfig option in the xorg.conf and restart X, the same behavior is exhibited except that, of course, I cannot run use the synclient command. I have also found that the RightEdge is not the only setting affected by this problem. I also tried with the PressureMotionMaxFactor option, and it seems to react the same way. The funny thing is that sometimes the settings get set, and sometimes they don't. Sometimes there is a stall before the edge scrolling works and sometimes there is not. I don't really know what is causing the problem, but I hope this helps to track down the problem. wt -- System Information: Debian Release: testing/unstable APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Kernel: Linux 2.6.16-2-686 Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Versions of packages xserver-xorg-input-synaptics depends on: ii libc6 2.3.6-15 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libx11-6 2:1.0.0-6 X11 client-side library ii libxext6 1:1.0.0-4 X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxi61:1.0.0-5 X11 Input extension library ii xserver-xorg-core 1:1.0.2-8 X.Org X server -- core server xserver-xorg-input-synaptics recommends no packages. -- no debconf information --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- On Thu, Oct 02, 2008 at 02:27:10PM -0400, Xavier Douville wrote: > So I have SHMconfig OFF (nothing can interfere). I first though that gitk was flawed, then gitk+tk8.5 but this problem also occurred for gitks that were run over ssh -X on a known to be working configuration. ...I made some trivial tests and it seems that drawing more than one button in wish (both tk8.5 and tk8.4) always shows just one h and v filling button. ...I knew it was working at some point of time in the past, I eventually went back to Driver "vesa" which used to be configured at first until I setup the radeonhd, and that did the trick, gitk missing buttons were fully restored! I suspect this very same problem affects other applications as well, eg., the default pdf viewer uses ridiculously large scale to display pdfs (as if it would have zoom 8000% or something like that, some aspect ratio distortion happens). But I haven't confirmed it really is the case. Severity important because it renders some application(s) totally unusable, while the other parts of the system still work as expected. -- Package-specific info: /var/lib/x11/X.roster does not exist. /var/lib/x11/X.md5sum does not exist.
