On the system under consideration, I have:

  $ cat /proc/mtrr
  reg00: base=0x0 (0MB), size=  128MB, count=1: write-back
  reg01: base=0x00800 (  128MB), size=   64MB, count=1: write-back
  reg02: base=0x00c00 (  192MB), size=   32MB, count=1: write-back
  reg03: base=0x00e00 (  224MB), size=   16MB, count=1: write-back
  reg04: base=0x09000 ( 2304MB), size=  128MB, count=2: write-combining
  reg07: base=0x0a000 ( 2560MB), size=   64MB, count=2: write-combining
  $ free -b

I don't know if these data may help you in shedding some light on my
problem...

Ah, I see: I was not aware of this possibility.
I'm sorry, but I am not a kernel/X11 expert...  :-(

If by "freeze" you mean that my box could experience a lockup, and I
would have to power-cycle it in order to get everything back up and
running, without permanent damage, then I could even try to perform a
few tests (under your guide)...

If by "freeze" you mean that I could damage the hardware or lose data
from my filesystems, then I am afraid I must refrain from performing
any such test: this is a production machine, not a test one, and I do
not have any ready-to-go replacement laptop (yet).

Sorry it's taken me three months to reply. I thought I had, but apprently
not.

Sometime in the last couple of weeks (new Xserver was put out), the behavior
changed. Now, synclient will allow me to assign all three taps at will.
However, the settings in xorg.conf are completely ignored, and all three taps
are set to zero but defaults. I can work around this by adding synclient to
Xsetup, but it would be nice to understand why xorg.conf is being ignore and if
its possible to fix this.
