Bug#543210: Alt-F7 to return to X, passes F7 key to top focus'd window

2009-08-23 Thread David Murn
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.4+4

When Im in text console, using Alt-F7 to return to X passes the F7 key
to the window which has current focus. Ive found numerous reports of
this bug in other places via google, but no solutions or possible
remedies to fix it.

When watching the flow with xev, when I press Ctl and Alt the
KeyPressed event is sent, then a KeyRelease is generated for both keys,
just before the console switch occurs. When I press Alt-F7 to return,
xev shows the F7 key appearing as a KeyPresed/KeyRelease'd event.

Is there any way to prevent this key from reaching the X server? This
bug has been reported in SuSE at the following URL..

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=141443

This page indicates that the bug has been resolved, but there appears to
be no actual details of a resolution.

This bug seems difficult to reproduce, as it doesnt occur on a fresh
debian install, however my system was installed about 3 years ago and
kept up-to-date ever since. I have updated all packages current as of
23/8/09, and the bug is still present.

Im happy to provide any logs or other detailed debugging info to help
resolve this issue, however Im somewhat over my head when it comes to
debugging the X system.

Re: X.org plans for the squeeze cycle

X.org release management is notoriously pretty bad. Releases often slip
by months, and bugs in .0 server releases aren't unheard of. See also
http://www.openbsd.org/papers/asiabsdcon2009-release_engineering/mgp9.html

Anyway, there's no schedule for 1.7 to my knowledge, let alone for the
subsequent releases. I'd guess server 1.7 (and X.Org 7.5) will come
before the end of the year, though, so that seems like a good candidate
for a squeeze release in 2010.

FWIW, the pattern so far looks like:
Apr 19 2007 xorg-server-1.3.0.0.tar.gz
Sep 6 2007 xorg-server-1.4.tar.gz
Jun 10 2008 xorg-server-1.4.1.tar.gz
Jun 11 2008 xorg-server-1.4.2.tar.gz
Sep 3 2008 xorg-server-1.5.0.tar.gz
Sep 23 2008 xorg-server-1.5.1.tar.gz
Oct 10 2008 xorg-server-1.5.2.tar.gz
Nov 5 2008 xorg-server-1.5.3.tar.gz
Feb 25 12:19 xorg-server-1.6.0.tar.gz
Apr 14 13:09 xorg-server-1.6.1.tar.gz
Jul 7 16:39 xorg-server-1.6.2.tar.gz
Jul 31 23:42 xorg-server-1.6.3.tar.gz

I'd say 6 months to a year from a .0 server to something we can ship in
stable. Depending if RedHat/Fedora are shipping it too and thus fixing
most bugs for us.

> * How many "big" transitions will the upcoming changes cause? When should

Lately the big problems were related to the stability of the intel
driver, which went through several big changes (full modesetting in the
driver instead of using the bios, then switch of acceleration
architecture to EXA, then a kernel memory manager, then kernel mode
setting, and I'm probably forgetting some). Hopefully most of that is
over, and we can migrate it to testing soon along with the rest of the X
stack.
Kernel mode setting for the radeon driver is being worked on, will be in
staging in the 2.6.31 kernel, so hopefully we can ship that stack with
squeeze. The nouveau driver is also lining up for inclusion in the
kernel (maybe in staging in 2.6.32?) so it'd be really great to be able
to ship that in the release, too.
Some of that depends on having enough people available to package new
releases, triage/forward bugs, and test the new stuff. I won't be able
to do much of that myself in the foreseeable future.

One thing that might cause some minor disruption in sid is the moving
around of headers between libxext and x11proto-xext
(http://lists.freedesktop.org/pipermail/xorg-announce/2009-August/000953.html).
Fedora already went through that, though, and the change should be
mostly invisible to clients.

Cheers,
Julien

There's some truth to this, but anyone reading it without context should
keep in mind who wrote it. From my POV the main problem is lack of
manpower upstream, and the people we have tend to be more interested in
working on functionality or fixing bugs than doing release management
stuff.

Actually, there is one:

http://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2009-May/000993.html

But we haven't even frozen features or branched for xserver 1.7 yet, so
we're way behind. AFAIK the main outstanding blocker is XKB2.

I think this should be fixed by

http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=3020b1d43e34fca08cd51f7c7c8ed51497d49ef3

which have been nominated for the upstream 1.6 branch and will hopefully
appear in xserver-xorg-core soon.

Hm I applied both patches and rebuild xserver-xorg-core.
Then I was unable to direct connect to a game with xqf, the screen
becomes just black.

After killing I tried to start et in the normal way, it took ages (ages
= 5 min) to switch from the intro to the main screen and too many ages
to switch from the main menu to another one (aborted after 10 minutes).

Now I downgraded again to the pure debian one and grml the issues don't
go away *sigh*

Weird, maybe there was a crash in the X server or game process or
something like that.

Sounds like maybe the DRI doesn't get enabled anymore for some reason.

glxinfo says that it is enabled, xorg.log dmesg etc does not show
anything interesting.

Re: X.org plans for the squeeze cycle

years? Which of those are material for Debian stable, which might be a bit

My main worry for 1.7 is that it probably won't give us a lot of time to
shake bugs out of XKB2. We're not historically very good at dealing with
the guts of the input system anyway, and that XKB2 won't provide any
immediate user-visible changes that seem to make it a must have (if I'm
wrong here, please correct me!) On the other hand, with the 1.6 servers
we finally have a stable input system again, so my sense is that we
should probably be conservative and go with the 1.6 branches for squeeze
given our short time frame.

FWIW, the pattern so far looks like:
Apr 19 2007 xorg-server-1.3.0.0.tar.gz
Sep 6 2007 xorg-server-1.4.tar.gz
Jun 10 2008 xorg-server-1.4.1.tar.gz
Jun 11 2008 xorg-server-1.4.2.tar.gz
Sep 3 2008 xorg-server-1.5.0.tar.gz
Sep 23 2008 xorg-server-1.5.1.tar.gz
Oct 10 2008 xorg-server-1.5.2.tar.gz
Nov 5 2008 xorg-server-1.5.3.tar.gz
Feb 25 12:19 xorg-server-1.6.0.tar.gz
Apr 14 13:09 xorg-server-1.6.1.tar.gz
Jul 7 16:39 xorg-server-1.6.2.tar.gz
Jul 31 23:42 xorg-server-1.6.3.tar.gz

* How much time do you usually need from a new upstream release of X.org
to a stable Debian package in unstable?

I'd say 6 months to a year from a .0 server to something we can ship in
stable. Depending if RedHat/Fedora are shipping it too and thus fixing
most bugs for us.

* How many "big" transitions will the upcoming changes cause? When should those
happen? Can we do something to make them easier?

This is the big one to me. I don't interface at all with the
debian-kernel folk, and have no idea what their plans are. Given the
user demand that I've seen, I'd much rather throw whatever effort we can
in to providing optional KMS bits for radeon, as well as high quality
intel, than worry about XKB2 and Xserver 1.7. I don't know that we'll
have the manpower to do that either, but this seems to be where we'll
get the most payoff for our energy.

One thing that might cause some minor disruption in sid is the moving
around of headers between libxext and x11proto-xext
(http://lists.freedesktop.org/pipermail/xorg-announce/2009-August/000953.html).
Fedora already went through that, though, and the change should be
mostly invisible to clients.

I don't really know what to think about this.

I don't see anything wrong with that. Your screen dimensions are
220x129 millimeters (which is almost exactly 10"), there's 1024x600
pixels, this means there's 118 dots per inch in each direction. No X
bug there.

Hello!

X-Debbugs-Cc:ing the debian-eeepc-devel mailing list for obvious
reasons. Please Cc: me in replies, I am not subscribed to the list.

The installation went really smooth (kudos to the Debian Eee PC Team),
the major problem being that the default font size is too big. I am not
an X11 expert, but this seems a DPI problem.

BTW, I installed two different machines (same model, one in Italian and
the other in English) and the font problem was present in both.

I do not own this machine, but I have a certain degree of liberty to
play with. The full installation logs are available upon request.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Comments/Problems:

1) default font size problem

The font size is too big: I wanted to include a screenshot (44kb) ,
but it seems the first report I sent two days ago was not accepted by
the BTS, thus I am trying without screenshot ;-)

Since we (the Debian FreeSmartphone.Org Team) experienced a similar
problem on the Openmoko Neo FreeRunner (bug #500626 [2]), I firstly
thought about a DPI problem: indeed, on the 904HD xdpyinfo shows that
we have 133x135 DPI, while on the 1000H [3] we have 96x96.

There are two quick workarounds (both successfully tested):

   a. startx/xinit users should append "-dpi 96" to the X call in
  /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc

   b. GDM users, instead, should redefine in /etc/gdm/gdm.conf the
standard server GDM launches, adding something like

[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -audit 0 -dpi 96
flexible=true
#priority=0

2) wireless

I performed the installation through the wireless network: there were
no problem for the 904HD to connect to my WPA/WPA2 AP (Fonera 2100A).
However, at the first reboot the wireless card did not show up on
   NetworkManager.

This was caused by the fact that d-i had put the following on
   /etc/network/interfaces:

 allow-hotplug ath0
 iface ath0 inet dhcp
   wpa-ssid $MYSSID
   wpa-psk $MYPASSPHRASE

If I remove the lines above, NetworkManager takes care of everything
and then I can connect to my Fonera (but it seems only to the public
   and passphrase-less signal).

It seems that this is a normal situation and Eee PC users are advised
to modify /etc/network/interfaces [4]: I consider this a bug in
either d-i (why it does not ask me if I want to keep these settings?)
or in NetworkManager. Since I know this is a "hot" subject, feel
free to just ignore it :-)

Bug#543304: /usr/bin/X: Options -showDefaultModulePath and -showDefaultLibPath return extraneous text

2009-08-23 Thread Paul Higgins
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+19
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/X

I was installing an updated video driver on my system. (Nvidia's:
NVIDIA-Linux-x86-173.14.20-pkg1.run)

It complained about not being able to retrieve the module and lib paths for the
installed
configuration. Fortunately it's defaults worked for my system. I traced the
error to the
command options mentioned. Here is sample output on my PC:

===
r...@higginsp6(1):~# X -showDefaultModulePath
X: warning; process set to priority -2 instead of requested priority 0
/usr/lib/xorg/modules

r...@higginsp6(1):~# X -showDefaultLibPath
X: warning; process set to priority -2 instead of requested priority 0
/usr/lib
===
The X: warning line is unexpected. I don't think it is reasonable to expect
users of these command
options to ignore this. (I will also report this to NVidia too.)

I obviously don't know if X is where the message originates. I trust this will
be redirected as needed.

BTW: Why can't these command options work when X is running? I get the
message:
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.
Seems like these information options should work anytime, anywhere.
