Bug#541307: xserver-xorg: x locks requires reboot

2009-08-13 Thread Ben Whyte
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.4+3
Severity: important

On entering X and using applications for a short period X locks up and the
keyboard becomes unusable. The mouse continues to move but clicks are not
responded too.

The only solution is to log in remotely using ssh and reboot.

That would make sense if you have an R420 GPU, this is a known erratum
of that core. Stefano has an RV350 though, which isn't affected by this.

Unfortunately there's a virtually unlimited number of problems that can
cause GPU lockups, and people tend to focus too much on the symptoms
(which tend to be similar) rather than the causes / triggers.

Hmm. One thing I notice is that there's almost no EXA offscreen memory,
due to your enormous Virtual directive. Normally this should only affect
performance, not correctness, but it might be worth trying a smaller
maximum desktop size just in case.

in fact, I did not have any improvement by changing the AGPMode, AGPMode
1 resulted in a system lockup as well.

At this moment I'm using

Option "BusType" "PCI"

and it seems to work. However I've not yet "pushed" the graphics to see
if it really work and I still have some issues with the horizontal lines
displaying on screen (although it seems to me that now this problem is
less noticeable).

I'm using the enormous Virtual screen you see in my xorg.conf because I
sometimes use a dual screen 1024x768 (laptop) + 1920x1080 (external
monitor). I suspected that this could cause problems but I'm not an
expert in this field and I wanted to test all the options with my
favorite configuration. I can try to reduce the Virtual size and post
the relevant part of the X log.

Dave, I'm using EXA because my X log said that the driver worked better
with it instead of XAA, but as I already said, I'm not an expert at
all ;-)
I can try these options as well and then report to Debian Bugs

Bug#541089: xterm: bold color attribute now displaying as black by default

2009-08-13 Thread Cristian Ionescu-Idbohrn
My interpretation of this (man xterm):

,
|colorBD (class ColorBD)
|This specifies the color to use to display bold characters if
|the ``colorBDMode'' resource is enabled. The default is
|``XtDefaultForeground.''
`

is that setting colorBD without colorBDMode being enabled won't do
anything useful. Am I wrong?

Cheers,

Bug#541160: #541160 xterm: heap corruption when changing window size

2009-08-13 Thread Thomas Dickey
hmm. It's supposed to work. However, for background: most of the changes
from 244 are restructuring changes (actually, making structs for the index
of line-data). So before, I had something like

unsigned char *a;
unsigned char *b;
unsigned char *c;
unsigned char *d;

and now it's a struct which can have different pointer types than unsigned
char *.

The enable-fifo-lines option turns on/off a modification which lets the
saved-line area be a separate memory buffer from the visible-lines. In turn,
that saved-line area is accessed as a circular buffer.

Because of the way saved-lines and visible-lines were all one array, the new
scheme has several special cases - and up to this point, I've been assuming the
problems lie just in that chunk - particularly since more than half of the code
related to just enable-fifo-lines is in the resizing logic.

However - in that "most of the changes" chunk, it may address memory
differently, and we may be looking for a subscripting error, etc.

If I were able to reproduce this, I'd build xterm using the --enable-trace
option, to see if that gave me more information. Besides writing to
Trace-parent.out the display information, it turns on several assert's
(which may catch the problem a little earlier). There's a little more
trace that could be turned on by #define'ing OPT_TRACE to 2, though I'm
not sure if that's needed. But that's where I'd start - to find
xterm's sizes for the buffer.

Same results with yesterday's git master.

The flashing lines occurs on the (physical) right of both screens
while Firefox is redrawing, especially while loading a web page. On
the smaller screen the right side is the logical top which typically
contains some menus or toolbars so the effect is not so easily
noticed.

It happens even when Firefox is not mapped (ie if I restart Firefox
which causes page loading and switch to a different desktop the lines
appear on the visible desktop.

Thanks

After some discussion with Julien Cristau on the mailing list, I am now
convinced that the keymap setting should not done in this file, but in
debian-x11-keymap.fdi (see bug#535291).

I am therefore attaching the final (I hope) fdi file needed to make
this package working with hal on GNU/kFreeBSD.

Does
Option "DisplayPriority" "HIGH"
in the device section of your config help? Also, if you have a large
virtual setting in your config:
Virtual 2304 2304
reducing that might as help as well if you don't need all of it.
And finally, you might try disabling tiling:
Option "ColorTiling" "FALSE"

Sorry, I did not install all the packages that were built out of the new source.

I re-checked because I saw that the radeon module version is still
6.12.2 in X log.

Installing the new radeon package resolved the problem.

It is true that I technically do not need that large virtual but this
is the smallest that is going to work with a 1280x1024 and a 1024x768
display for sure. The resolution I use when the screen is set up
properly is 2048x1024 but I must get there somehow, and smaller
virtual might make that harder.

Thanks

Michal

No problem if you need the larger virtual size. Just something to try.

Bug#541407: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: dragging windows hangs up quite often

2009-08-13 Thread Robert Grabein
Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics
Version: 0.14.7~git20070706-3
Severity: important

This problem occurs on a MSI laptop with a SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad.
Dragging a window or changing the size causes sometimes the pointer to
leave the window, and then there is no more keyboard reaction,
the pointer can only be moved retarded, but not tapped or clicked,
and power off is the only choice.
I tried many different configurations of /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the
problem is reduced now but not solved.

this is my last xorg.conf

Package: xterm
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11
Severity: important

In a VNC desktop (served by Xrealvnc) with the fvwm window manager,
when I run uxterm or start xterm with LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8, the
"top" command shows that the xterm process takes up to more than
200 MB RES memory, making the whole system swap (the load average
reaches 10), then the RES memory goes down a bit, but the VIRT
memory still increases (at least 360 MB, at which point I did a
Ctrl-C, as the xterm window still hadn't appeared).

A strace shows things related to fonts. I've attached the last 200 lines
of strace output until I did a Ctrl-C.

This problem doesn't occur with:
  * LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 rxvt;
  * xterm executed with LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1;
  * uxterm executed in an Xorg desktop (i.e. no VNC).

Bug#541160: #541160 xterm: heap corruption when changing window size

2009-08-13 Thread Thomas Dickey
On a different (non-Debian) bug report, it seems that the underlying
cause is misaligned data, which would affect either type (fifo-lines
or not). Now that I know where to look, I'll work on a fix...

Bug#312718: #312718 xterm pasting of 8-bit characters from X clipboard interacts poorly with emacs

(I'm a bit confused - the problem in the bug as I reported it was with
_pasting_ of characters _into_ xterm, but above you have referred to
xterm copying _to_ the clipboard?)

The problem still exists in Xemacs 21, which is what I use, but not in
Emacs 22 (as pointed out by Vincent Lefevre's comment of 23 Jan 2006).

So maybe it is just now an xemacs problem, which will be fixed within
the next decade or two.

Best wishes,

Frederik

"I have certain xkb configuration options in my /etc/default/console-setup
. Most important of them for me are :

XKBLAYOUT="us,ru,ua"
XKBOPTIONS="grp:caps_toggle,grp_led:scroll"

I am testing Karmic packages on top of my Jaunty installation.

After upgrade of hal to 0.5.12~rc1+git20090510-0ubuntu2 , I noticed that
my keyboard layouts and options are not configured into xorg server
anymore. In Xorg.0.log I see xkb_layout configured as only "us". I can not
use "ru" and "ua" layouts, and switch them by CapsLock.

Reverting to hal 0.5.12~rc1+git20090403-0ubuntu1 (from Jaunty) helped me
to restore former proper behaviour (xkb layouts and options are taken from
/etc/default/console-setup, shown in Xorg.0.log and act as they did before
and as I liked).

Don't know for sure if this behaviour occured in git20090406.46dc48
versions of hal, as I did not restart my xorg server at these times."

The way to fix it was to modify the debian-x11-keymap.fdi to directly
check for input.keys capability:

This should probably be applied to Debian as well, before the hal version
in unstable drops 10-keymap.fdi and hal-setup-keymap.

Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.4~5ubuntu18
Severity: important

If the X binary wrapper runs into problems when nicing the X process, it will
spew disruptive messages to stderr that cause interaction problems with
whatever tried to invoke X. For example, the proper behaviour of the X
'-showDefaultModulePath' commandline argument is to output a path to stderr.
With the wrapper, situations like that might happen:

# /usr/bin/X -showDefaultModulePath
X: warning; process set to priority -2 instead of requested priority 0
/usr/lib/xorg/modules

It also causes '-showDefaultModulePath' to be unusable by a non-privileged
user.
