Bug#532420: xserver-xorg: control-alt-backspace no longer works
Julien Cristau wrote: >>> DontZap will be changed back to off by default soon. Set the >>> terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp xkb option to enable it. >> Where exactly? dpkg -l |grep xkeyboard returns nothing. >> > The binary package is xkb-data. Thanks. I got it back by including terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp in the XKBOPTIONS line in /etc/default/console-setup. BTW you closed the bug, I suppose because it is not an xserver-xorg bug. But isn't it an xserver-xorg bug that the Xorg log says that DontZap is off, while in fact it is on? Bug#532420: xserver-xorg: control-alt-backspace no longer works
On Wed, Jun 10, 2009 at 13:55:28 +0200, Jan Willem Stumpel wrote: > BTW you closed the bug, I suppose because it is not an > xserver-xorg bug. But isn't it an xserver-xorg bug that the Xorg > log says that DontZap is off, while in fact it is on? > I closed the bug because there's no bug here. DontZap is off, but that's orthogonal to whether your xkb map includes the Terminate_Server action. In order for ctrl+alt+bksp to work, you need to have it mapped to Terminate_Server, *and* you need the server to react to this. The former used to be always true, and is now controlled by terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp in xkb-data (which is off by default). The latter is what DontZap switches. Bug#532623: [xserver-xorg] install hangs at Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2)
Package: xserver-xorg Version: 1:7.4+2 Severity: critical --- Please enter the report below this line. --- This bug report is not being submitted from the machine the bug is on so disregard the package information. The machine the bug is on is severely broken due to trying to install xserver-xorg 1:7.4+2. The machine that is broken is an up to date squeeze box. I tried to install gnome-session, and gnome-settings-daemon from sid. When I did that it wanted to install xserver-xorg 1:7.4+2. Synaptic hung with the last line in the console saying: Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2) It would not complete so I killed synaptic. I can still ssh into the box. After I removed all of the locks that were hanging around, I did dpkg --configure -a to try and reconfigure whatever was partially configured. That command also hangs with the last line saying: Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2) ... So, it looks like X is completely broken. I did Ctrl-Alt-backspace and everything went blank. Ctrl-Alt f1... doesn't even bring up a terminal. --- System information. --- Architecture: i386 Kernel: Linux 2.6.28.090316 Debian Release: squeeze/sid 500 testing www.debian-multimedia.org 500 testing security.debian.org 500 testing debian.linux.ibm.com 500 intrepidppa.launchpad.net --- Package information. --- Depends (Version) | Installed ===-+-= xserver-xorg-core (>= 2:1.4-3) | 2:1.4.2-11 xserver-xorg-video-all | OR xserver-xorg-video-2| xserver-xorg-input-all | OR xserver-xorg-input-2| libc6(>= 2.7-1) | 2.9-12 debconf (>= 0.5) | 1.5.26 OR debconf-2.0 | xkb-data| 1.5-2 OR xkb-data-legacy | x11-xkb-utils | 7.4+2 Recommends (Version) | Installed ==-+-=== libgl1-mesa-dri| 7.4-2 udev | 0.141-1 Package's Suggests field is empty. --- Output from package bug script --- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe". Bug#527619: marked as done (xdm should depend on x11-xserver-utils)
Your message dated Wed, 10 Jun 2009 15:20:11 + with message-id and subject line Bug#527619: fixed in xdm 1:1.1.8-6 has caused the Debian Bug report #527619, regarding xdm should depend on x11-xserver-utils to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 527619: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=527619 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: xdm Version: 1:1.1.8-5 Severity: normal Currently xdm suggests xutils, which depends on x11-xserver-utils. x11-xserver-utils includes the xrdb program. If xrdb is not installed, xdm only just works. Specifically, it will not be able to read the contents of its configuration files in /etc/X11/xdm. So it will present its default appearance. More seriously it will not know to write a PID file in /var/run (this is specified in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config). Consequently, /etc/init.d/xdm stop|restart will fail with a "not running" message even though xdm is running. I suggest that xdm should depend on x11-server-utils. Bug#532642: error in German translation
Package: xkb-data Version: 1.6-1 Severity: minor Tags: l10n, patch Hi, I found an error in the German translation of xkb-data via the gnome-keyboard-properties program: With LANG=C choose "Layouts" and then "Layout Options...". There is a checkbox that lets you enable a "Key sequence to kill the X server" and this key sequence is "Control + Alt + Backspace". In the German translation the key sequence reads "Strg + Alt + Entf". This is wrong, because the "Entf" key on the German keyboard is not the same as the "Backspace" key. Instead the "Entf" key is the same as the "Del" key, which - if pressed in a sequence with Control and Alt - will not kill the X server, though. In the German language the "Backspace" key is usually refered to as "Rücktaste". The attached patch fixes this translation error. Thanks, Fabian -- Dipl.-Phys. Currently, if a font is unkown (and since there is no Sans and Serif and Monospace fonts as used e.g. in Gnome2, or no Helvetica anti-aliased and no fixed antialiased fonts, as used in terminals or Gnumeric), the result is "the first listed font in the list of all available fonts". Which is really really bad, for my first font was Cartwright (try to use Cartwright size 12). I dug a bit around, read the source code of libxft (partly), and found a good way to ensure that fonts would be at least readable when the = environment contains GDK_USE_XFT=3D1. Principle: find reasonable defaults for all font requests. Problem: no font is guaranteed to be present, so we have to put several defaults. Problem: Helvetica and Times are not defaults. (partly) stepping out as l10n "helper" for X packages
With this mail, I'd like to make it official that I don't really follow l10n-related issues with X packages anymore. Until now, as xorg was listed among "D-I l10n material", I was trying to help committing incoming translations, mostly for xorg debconf stuff. Given the drastic reduction of debconf prompting for X (which I welcome), this is much less relevant and I don't really pay attention to incoming l10n stuff. So, I prefer making it clear that I shouldn't be expected to deal with l10n issues that come for X packages through the BTS. Of course, I still can help for commit rounds from time to time, when a release is preparedbut I probably need to be prodded about this. I hope that this won't be too much of a problems, folks -- signature.asc Description: Digital signature
