Bug#532420: xserver-xorg: control-alt-backspace no longer works

Thanks. I got it back by including terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp in the
XKBOPTIONS line in /etc/default/console-setup.

BTW you closed the bug, I suppose because it is not an
xserver-xorg bug. But isn't it an xserver-xorg bug that the Xorg
log says that DontZap is off, while in fact it is on?

Regards, Jan

I closed the bug because there's no bug here. DontZap is off, but
that's orthogonal to whether your xkb map includes the Terminate_Server
action. In order for ctrl+alt+bksp to work, you need to have it mapped
to Terminate_Server, *and* you need the server to react to this. The
former used to be always true, and is now controlled by
terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp in xkb-data (which is off by default). The
latter is what DontZap switches.

Cheers,
Julien

 .
   [ Julien Cristau ]
   * Drop -1 debian revisions from build-deps.
   * Bump Standards-Version to 3.7.3.
   * Drop the XS- prefix from Vcs-* control fields.
   * libxpm4{,-dbg} don't need to depend on x11-common.
   * Add xpm.PS.gz to the -dev package (closes: #525551).
   * Don't handle nostrip in DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS explicitly, dh_strip does the
 right thing.
   * Use filter instead of findstring to parse DEB_BUILD_OPTIONS in
 debian/rules.
   * Add README.source, bump Standards-Version to 3.8.1.
   * Run autoreconf at build time.
   * Allow parallel builds.
   * Move -dbg package to new debug section.
   * Don't pass -l and -L options to dh_shlibdeps, it seems to be useless
 nowadays.
 .
   [ Brice Goglin ]
   * Add a link to www.X.org and a reference to the upstream module
 in the long description.

What is it doing when it hangs? Add 'set -x' at the top of
/var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-xorg.postinst and run dpkg --configure -a.

Bug#532623: [xserver-xorg] install hangs at Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2)

2009-06-10 Thread Brent S. Elmer Ph.D.
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.4+2
Severity: critical

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---
This bug report is not being submitted from the machine the bug is on so
disregard the package information. The machine the bug is on is severely
broken due to
trying to install xserver-xorg 1:7.4+2. The machine that is broken is an up to
date
squeeze box. I tried to install gnome-session, and gnome-settings-daemon from
sid.
When I did that it wanted to install xserver-xorg 1:7.4+2. Synaptic hung with
the last line
in the console saying:

Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2)

It would not complete so I killed synaptic. I can still ssh into the box.
After I removed all of the locks that were
hanging around, I did dpkg --configure -a to try and reconfigure whatever was
partially configured.
That command also hangs with the last line saying:

Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2) ...

So, it looks like X is completely broken. I did Ctrl-Alt-backspace and
everything went blank.
Ctrl-Alt f1... doesn't even bring up a terminal.

-
-Briefly, the shell commands `./configure; make; make install' should
-configure, build, and install this package. The following
-more-detailed instructions are generic; see the `README' file for
-instructions specific to this package.
-
- The `configure' shell script attempts to guess correct values for
-various system-dependent variables used during compilation. It uses
-those values to create a `Makefile' in each directory of the package.
-It may also create one or more `.h' files containing system-dependent
-definitions. Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status' that
-you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, and a
-file `config.log' containing compiler output (useful mainly for
-debugging `configure').
-
- It can also use an optional file (typically called `config.cache'
-and enabled with `--cache-file=config.cache' or simply `-C') that saves
-the results of its tests to speed up reconfiguring. Caching is
-disabled by default to prevent problems with accidental use of stale

Bug#532623: [xserver-xorg] install hangs at Setting up xserver-xorg (1:7.4+2)

2009-06-10 Thread Dotan Shavit
>What is it doing when it hangs? Add 'set -x' at the top of

It ends with:
+ dpkg --compare-versions 1:7.3+18 lt 1:7.4
+ invoke-rc.d hal restart
+ exit 0

Which means the postinst script was done
And than it hangs...

Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.1.8-5
Severity: normal

Currently xdm suggests xutils, which depends on x11-xserver-utils.
x11-xserver-utils includes the xrdb program.

If xrdb is not installed, xdm only just works. Specifically, it will
not be able to read the contents of its configuration files in
/etc/X11/xdm. So it will present its default appearance. More
seriously it will not know to write a PID file in /var/run (this
is specified in /etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config). Consequently,
/etc/init.d/xdm stop|restart will fail with a "not running" message
even though xdm is running.

I suggest that xdm should depend on x11-server-utils.

Phil.

Bug#532642: error in German translation

2009-06-10 Thread Fabian Greffrath

Package: xkb-data
Version: 1.6-1
Severity: minor
Tags: l10n, patch

Hi,

I found an error in the German translation of xkb-data via the
gnome-keyboard-properties program:

With LANG=C choose "Layouts" and then "Layout Options...". There is a
checkbox that lets you enable a "Key sequence to kill the X server"
and this key sequence is "Control + Alt + Backspace".

In the German translation the key sequence reads "Strg + Alt + Entf".
This is wrong, because the "Entf" key on the German keyboard is not
the same as the "Backspace" key. Instead the "Entf" key is the same as
the "Del" key, which - if pressed in a sequence with Control and Alt -
will not kill the X server, though. In the German language the
"Backspace" key is usually refered to as "Rücktaste".

The attached patch fixes this translation error.

Thanks,
Fabian

Package: libxxf86misc1
Version: 1:1.0.1-2
Severity: normal

After upgrading to xorg 7.3, xpilot-ng-x11 dies as soon as I click the mouse
with the following error:

X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 137 (XFree86-Misc)
Minor opcode of failed request: 3 (XF86MiscGetMouseSettings)
  Value in failed request: 0x260017b
Serial number of failed request: 513231
Current serial number in output stream: 513231

This happened with two different implementations of xpilot, one in Debian and
one not (but from a common ancestor, so it also uses XFree86-Misc to get mouse
settings) and on two different systems that had been upgraded to xorg 7.3,
one with the proprietary nvidia driver and the other with i810.

If I start xpilot inside a VNC session which lacks the XFree86-Misc extension,
xpilot does not die when I click the mouse (of course, the graphics performance
plunges, so this isn't really a workaround -- but it confirms where the
problem is happening.)

After installing and then uninstalling xpdf-chinese-simplified,
xfonts-intl-chinese, and xfonts-intl-chinese-big, I lost my 'fixed' font

happen -- and I still don't have a 'fixed' font and can't run X.

That's how dpkg handles conffiles, not a bug in this package. Use dpkg

Hi,

I have been investigation a few problems with Xft, and the first one is
the default configuration. Currently, if a font is unkown (and since
there is no Sans and Serif and Monospace fonts as used e.g. in Gnome2,
or no Helvetica anti-aliased and no fixed antialiased fonts, as used in
terminals or Gnumeric), the result is "the first listed font in the
list of all available fonts". Which is really really bad, for my first
font was Cartwright (try to use Cartwright size 12).

I dug a bit around, read the source code of libxft (partly), and found
a good way to ensure that fonts would be at least readable when the =

environment contains GDK_USE_XFT=3D1.

Principle: find reasonable defaults for all font requests.
Problem: no font is guaranteed to be present, so we have to put several
defaults.
Problem: Helvetica and Times are not defaults.
Answer: assume xfonts-scalable is there

This is weird. I have no idea how that could happen (and afaict my
etch->lenny upgrades worked fine). I'm going to assume this was a
glitch in the etch->lenny upgrade path, or a local issue, and close this
now. Hopefully it won't reappear.

Bernhard's proposal solves my problem, but xauth still doesn't seem
to work -- unless I'm doing something wrong:

Maybe I'm missing something but I seem to remember that this worked
before this way.

(partly) stepping out as l10n "helper" for X packages

2009-06-10 Thread Christian Perrier
With this mail, I'd like to make it official that I don't really
follow l10n-related issues with X packages anymore.

Until now, as xorg was listed among "D-I l10n material", I was trying
to help committing incoming translations, mostly for xorg debconf
stuff.

Given the drastic reduction of debconf prompting for X (which I
welcome), this is much less relevant and I don't really pay attention
to incoming l10n stuff.

So, I prefer making it clear that I shouldn't be expected to deal with
l10n issues that come for X packages through the BTS.

Of course, I still can help for commit rounds from time to time, when
a release is preparedbut I probably need to be prodded about this.

I hope that this won't be too much of a problems, folks
