When I connect my LCD monitor (in resol 1280x1024) by VGA to my laptop which is in 1440x900, the last one has a strange behaviour : its display is cropped on the right edge. See screenshots [1] and [2]. I can move and see the mouse in the black zone but it's totally unusable. The secondary screen is correctly displayed with compiz effects working etc... I haven't any special configuration in xorg.conf nor with randr (only connected the monitor and it worked). My graphic card is a Ati Radeon HD 3650, using fglrx proprietary driver. Please, tell me the info you need as I don't know what's important for this type of problem. Bug#530297: xserver-xorg-video-trident: Completely blank screen and 99% CPU usage with trident driver on CyberBlade i1 card
I seem to have found two ways to work around the problem. If I: 1) Compile and install a version of xserver-xorg-video-trident with the two lines in WAITFORVSYNC commented out. 2) Start the computer normally, so that gdm starts. At this point, I just get a blank screen which is seemingly unresponsive. 3) Switch to a text VT (which shows up) 4) Switch back to VT7 then I actually get a normal, functioning gdm login. Granted, it is 800x600 and not 1024x768 like it should be, but it works! From the Xorg.0.log (attached), X is actually detecting my LCD screen as 1024x768, but disposes of all of the modelines for 1024x768 for various reasons. I thought that this might have to do with the amount of RAM allocated to be video RAM, so I set the BIOS to allocate 8 MB. However, the problem remains. In an attempt to fix the resolution, I changed my xorg.conf to have Section "Monitor" Identifier "Configured Monitor" HorizSync 28-51 VertRefresh 43-60 EndSection and I have found that this fixes the problem completely, even with the unmodified version of xserver-xorg-video-trident in unstable, giving me the correct resolution. I guess the bug here is that X misdetects the parameters of my LCD and this causes the trident driver to: 1) put the screen in a blank state where none of the above measures work and the only way to fix it is to reboot, and then 2) spin endlessly. Here's everything I could think of regarding autodetection data: paul:~# get-edid |parse-edid parse-edid: parse-edid version 1.4.1 get-edid: get-edid version 1.4.1 Performing real mode VBE call Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f00 bx=0x0 cx=0x0 Function supported Call successful VBE version 102 VBE string at 0xc0056 "Copyright 1998 TRIDENT MICROSYSTEMS INC." Re: Disabling the patch system from packages

I'd have guessed it makes it easier. Why would it do that? Having a patch system in place allows them to just add the patch and be done with it. I'm pretty sure they have to deal with every patch system out there (so they know quilt), but setting one up might not be in their best interest. -- Timo Aaltonen Systems Specialist IT Services, Helsinki University of Technology -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-x-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of "unsubscribe".
