The translation to spanish of the description makes that a user who wants all
the resolutions listed installed unmark all options; this makes the
installation don't install any resolution in the X system, so X are not
accesible without reconfiguration.

Hello,

The configuration for GNU/Linux and GNU/Hurd is mostly identical,
however, there is a difference in how the mouse is setup.

Basically, on hurd-i386, the Device should always be "/dev/mouse" and
the Protocol be "osmouse". ZAxisMapping should not be set,
Emulate3Buttons can be, depending on debconf.

Unfortunately, I'm no debconf wizard, so I hope the changes are not
overly complex and could be done relatively easily. It would be nice if
X would run out-of-the-box on hurd-i386. Feel free to ask questions, but
please CC me.

thanks,

Michael

The nvidia issue would probably be fixed by reinstalling the driver
properly, and isn't anything we can fix, so let's try to focus on the
other one.

When you get a black screen with nv, what app are you trying to start in

My package (nxcl[0]) FTBFS on the alpha buildd because x11-common doesn't
install in the buildd. The relevant log entry is:

   Setting up x11-common (7.3+10) ...
tempnam: No such file or directory

subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
   Errors were encountered while processing:
x11-common
   E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

And the full log is in the usual place[1]

It didn't fail to continue, it successfully stopped. The monitor
settings should be automatically detected on X server startup in most
cases, so dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg doesn't ask about them anymore.
What's the actual problem you're trying to fix?

Package: x11-common
Version: 1:7.1.0-13
Severity: serious

Today I upgraded x11-common from -12 to -13 on my etch system. It
displayed a debconf note "incorrect nice value" (btw. the wording is poor,
there's no indication we're dealing with x11-common). I pressed "next"
and expected some new dialog where I could enter the nice value, but
nothing happened, the script hangs.

After pressing "Cancel", the pre-configuring stops, and I see the
following output on the terminal:

DESTROY created new reference to dead object ' Qt::VBoxLayout', <> line 14
during global destruction.

Received signal. Aborting x11-common package config script.

The installation continues, this is the following screen output, at this
time the frontend (KDE) displays the question again:

pressing "next" gives:

Package: xorg
Version: 7.1.0-19
Severity: critical
Justification: makes X11 unusable

I've not managed to define precisely when I get problems but I'm
noticing
the following symptoms and was wondering if some kind soul would help me
debug what's going on in order to get to a solution? Thanks, Michael

set-up: etch, gnome (eg gnome-core 2.14.3.6), metacity 2.14.5-4 and
Dell/Logitech USB optical mouse (seems to work fine in WinXP), with
nVidia graphics card/TwinView and 2 monitors (diff resolutions)

symptoms (occasional and not sure how to repeat)

a) double clicking won't select anything
b) in evolution, clicking on a new message or folder has no effect
c) the cursor (arrowhead) disappears - if I set prefs to show cursor by
depressing 'CNTL' I get the moving rectangles but there's no cursor
there)
d) focus doesn't move to new window (as it should and usually does)

I think the following is also a symptom but not 100% sure:
e) doing ALT-TAB to move between windows does nothing on very first
ALT-TAB

If it's the keyboard that's failed then using I also cannot get Gnome
menus (it selects the top level but nothing is shown) but can use the
mouse to open more new app/windows and then at some pt the keyboard
seems to be 'reset' such that it starts working again.

I've tried KDE and that also has the keyboard not responding (eg if I
try to switch desktops quickly then the keyboard stops responding) -
opening the control centre and changing options in there appears to
'reset' the keyboard.

Any thoughts either on what's going on or how to debug it to narrow
down the issues? I've asked on the Debian mailing list but am still
stuck. I've had this line in my xorg.conf re Mouse device:
Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2"
although it's a USB mouse I'm using, but commenting it out I still
see the same issues

When the kyb "freezes" it is still alive since /dev/input/... shows
characters (not sure how to do similar for mouse clicks)

Adding boot kernel option 'noapic' (as suggested on some fora) doesn't
help

So now I'm stuck as to how to solve this and how to narrow down
potential causes so all tips welcome.

Thanks, Michael

Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.0.22
Severity: normal

The xserver-xorg config script attempts to grok debian-installer/keymap
and set XkbModel/XkbLayout accordingly. However, it doesn't recognize
"no-latin1", only "no", and thus falls back to the default (pc104/us). I
don't really think there's an exact mapping for no-latin1 in the Xkb
rules, but "no" should at least be ages better than "us". :-)

The LCD panel is detected correctly as shown in the log, and the default
mode is the native resolution @60Hz.

However, modes forg lower resolutions @85Hz are also selected, and they
are used for fullscreen applications (specifically dosemu). The panel
works correctly only with 60-75Hz modes.

Removing the refresh rates from the config file solves the problem.

The xorg.conf generation should be fixed in current versions.

1) is fixed in unstable, we don't put anything in the Monitor section
anymore, so X can automatically detect this on startup.
I'm not sure about 2), could you try starting X (from current lenny or
sid) with no mode listed in xorg.conf? If the wrong mode is chosen,
please add Option "ModeDebug" to the Device section, and send the
corresponding log to this bug (there should be a preferred mode in the
EDID from the monitor, which X will choose, but if that's not the case
we can add a quirk to the server for your particular monitor).

Cheers,
Julien

Apparently the issue appears when running xmodmap or setxkbmap before
any key has been pressed. The map on the virtual core keyboard is
changed, but is then overwritten by the map from the actual physical
device when the first key is pressed.

Michael, would you consider adding the attached version of x11-input.fdi
to hal for now? This doesn't change anything for keyboards, only
mice/touchpads, so wouldn't cause the same problems as the previous
version. We can revisit the keyboard stuff after lenny.

Package: dpkg, xserver-xorg

Hi everybody, hello Don,

I am running the latest Debian Lenny / Sid combination and wanted to adjust a
workstation to another monitor.

Traditionallly that's done with the following command:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg.

If I run that command, the script ends up with the question whether to emulate
a 3-button mouse or not.

There is no questioning for graphics card RAM, horizontal and vertical
frequency range, colour depth, name of xserver, producer of graphics card and
so on. Someone seems to have screwed up the configure script.

If you set up Debian Lenny from scratch everything is fine, but if you try to
reconfigure the xserver you seem to be lost.
This bug appears independently from the type of xserver - it's part of
the "configure" option of the dpkg-Package.

Can someone reading this reproduce this bug?
Can you please fix it?

Regards

Uwe

These questions aren't asked anymore because these settings should be
detected automatically when X starts; this is not a bug.
If auto-detection doesn't work for your hardware, please open a new bug
including your xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log so we can hopefully get that
fixed.

Julien

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf > /var/lib/xfree86/xorg.conf.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

But the new one contains this:

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Firstly, unlike Ubuntu, Debian cannot assume users use sudo to get root
privileges, many will use su or simply login as root.

Secondly that command doesn't seem to work:

chianamo:~# dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
xserver-xorg postinst warning: not updating /etc/X11/xorg.conf; file has
   been customized

I'm not sure what is correct, but please update that information. I
assume the md5sum file (or another one) is still used.

Also, the information in xorg.conf about the xorg.conf manual page is
incorrect, "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" just loads the config file into man.
The old config file specified "man xorg.conf", but there doesn't seem to
be a manual page for xorg.conf in the xorg7 packages.

Package: gdm
Version: 2.18.4-1
Severity: important

When gdm starts it is appearently OK, then while typing in
username/password the font used is too big, and only the part which fits
inside the text-input box is displayed.
Also the menus displayed by clicking on "Session", "Actions" or
"Language" are written with too big fonts and fill the screen, so menus
are unusable.

After talking with Julien on IRC, we settled for something else:

I cloned the git tree in git://git.debian.org/~pootle-guest/xorg and
will sync it with the main tree.

Pootle will commit there and, therefore, maintainers would just need
to pull data from that tree when releasing (which would also solve the
changelog problem, from what Julien told me).

As agreed with Christian, the pootle user will commit translations to
the repository at git://git.debian.org/~pootle-guest/xorg and the XSF
will pull translation updates from there.

Cheers,

Downgraded to xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.8.0 (I couldn't find anything
more recent but earlier than 6.9.0) and everything works again. The
external monitor outputs at native res of 1680x1050.

Bug#490573: [xserver-xorg-video-intel] No video into projector

2008-07-12 Thread David
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.3.2-2
Severity: important

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

Hello,

I am afraid I cannot give much information, because it happened to me some
weeks ago with a projector whose brand I do not know. On Monday I have to
give another presentation which embedded videos, so *it is not portable to
the computer they will have there with Windows*. OK, I could have asked
Brice independently :-) instead of submitting a bug, but I am submitting the
bug just in case it is a real bug and not my fault. If it is not a real bug,
please forgive me and close the bug.

I use Debian sid with KDE, and the display is "Intel Corporation Mobile
945GM/GMS/GME, 943/940GML Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)".

When I plugged the projector and rebooted, the GRUB and boot video output
was directed to the projector, but as soon as kdm started the video output
was in the computer screen and not in the projector. Pressing Fn + F5 did
nothing.

Sorry if it is my fault and not a bug, and hope it helps in case it is a
bug.

Thank you,

David

Bug#490580: xdm does not automatically run on startup

2008-07-12 Thread Christoph Egger
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.1.8-1.1

When booting the system the last message is «Starting X Display Manager:

loging in and starting xdm via «sudo xdm» works as it should.

I have already purged xdm without fixing the problem. When kdm is set as
default it starts without problems.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome
Version: 1:0.2.902+svn570-1
Severity: wishlist

All xserver video packages seem to be providing an ids file at
/usr/share/xserver-xorg/pci/ containing a list of vendor + device id
strings that can be used for driver autodetection. This is a request for
this package to provide one. At a quick glance a simple adaptation of the
patch used in xserver-xorg-video-via package should do the trick.

Thanks, Kel.
