Anibal, can we rely on this for the future, or should libpciaccess be

I'll recommend to do so. Once etch is released, I'll revert the
changes done in pciutils 1:3.0.0-4 to how it was in the previous
version.

There are two reasons for that.

1. lspci prefers pci.ids.gz (lspci tries to open it first).

2. The Debian Installer also prefers pci.ids.gz because of its
   size.

   ls -l /usr/share/misc/pci.ids*
   -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 298093 2008-05-14 01:05 /usr/share/misc/pci.ids
   -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 90355 2008-04-26 01:05 /usr/share/misc/pci.ids.old.gz

   It's a 70% size reduction.

This happened right after I upgraded to the xorg version in the latest system
update.

unsatisfactory workaround - switching to the vesa driver.

the subject is adequately descriptive - except that the SHIFT KEY also fails..
If I didn't
have VMware Server running with a Windows VM so I could enter my root password
with an upper
case letter in it and hadn't had a copy of Kwrite with desktop icon set to open
as root, I
wouldn't have been able to get into xorg.conf in order to change the driver
setting to vesa.

In my opinion, an inexperienced user would not only be unable to get into root,
but very
possibly wouldn't even be able to file a bug report.

Bug#481345: xserver-xorg-video-intel: Xserver locks up when google earth is run

2008-05-15 Thread Sam Morris
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.3.1-1
Severity: important

On an amd64 system, the server crashes when I run google earth.

The screen freezes, and then the screen goes black for a second. When it
comes back, some colours on the screen are different (like someone
picked a random colour in a painting program and then clicked on a few
random places using the Fill tool).

It is possible to switch to tty1 and hit ctrl+alt+del to reboot, or even
log in blind and run some programs, all while the screen remains frozen.

If X is actually crashing, there should be a backtrace at the end of
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (or log.old if X already restarted since then).

It would be even better if you catch a backtrace with gdb after
installing xserver-xorg-core-dbg and libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg. Since your
machine seems to be alive after the problem, logging through ssh and
attaching gdb should be easy.

Beware of this. Assuming this is th X log after a soft reboot after the
crash, it may mean that the hardware didn't get properly cleaned,
causing some possible problems later. A hard reboot after the crash may
help.

Bug#481361: xserver-xorg-video-ati: No display on DVI output

2008-05-15 Thread Francois Gouget
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.8.0-1
Severity: important

Since the upgrade to 1:6.8.0-1 I cannot get the X server to work through
may ATI 7500 DVI output. More details:
 * My ATI 7500 has three outputs:
   - DVI
   - S-Video
   - VGA

 * My LCD monitor (an iiyama B2403WS) has two inputs:
   - HDMI + a DVI to HDMI cable
   - VGA

 * If I hook up the VGA output to the monitor, then the display goes
through the VGA output. However this results in a very ugly display
on my LCD monitor (dur to the digital->analog->digital roundtrip and
the high resolution) and is thus absolutely unusable.

 * If I only hook up the DVI output, then the monitor displays an
all-blue screen for a bit and then enters power-save mode. This is
exactly the same thing that is happening if the monitor's DVI input
is not connected to anything. So this means the graphics card
is not putting out a signal (or nothing that's recognisable).

 * Even when connected using the VGA cable, the monitor would sometimes
go black and repeatedly display a 'No signal' message. Moving the
mouse or using the keyboard did not get it out of that state. That last
issue might have been fixed by setting DPMS to off in xorg.conf.
It might be related to the DVI issue, but then maybe not.

 * This issue seems a bit similar to bug 481084 except in my case it
happens after a cold boot and with a single display.
   (so it's not a docking / suspend / multi-display issue)

I tried upgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati to 1:6.8.1~git20080512.94bf8f01-1
but this did not help. The only fix I found so far is to revert back to
1:6.6.3-2 (from the stable branch). More specifically now I use the
following packages:

---
ii xserver-xorg1:7.1.0-19
the X.Org X server
ii xserver-xorg-core
2:1.1.1-21etch4 X.Org X server -- core server

Bug#481364: xkb-data: Stock keyboard layout broken

2008-05-15 Thread eric

The stock keyboard layout loaded with xorg.conf entry

2008-05-15 Thread Mahesh T. Pai
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+10
Followup-For: Bug #337874

I got this output when I tried
`dpgk-reconfigure xserver-xorg`.

Keyboard options:

seeingthis, something is probably wrong.

Looks like it is related to this bug.

I am not sure whether the following lines in dmesg are causing or are
caused by mis-configured xserver.

I think the two problems you report are unrelated.
The issue with dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, if it what I expect, will
be fixed in the next version. If it isn't we'll need more information,
running dpkg-reconfigure with DEBCONF_DEBUG=developer in the environment
would be a start.

Julien

Just FYI, I've been running xfs with this patch for the last few days
and don't have any problems. Could this be uploaded to unstable to get
xfs back into testing?

We just need to talk to upstream about this. I didn't have time to
forward your bug at bugzilla.freedesktop.org yet. If you can do it, that
would be nice. Create the bugzilla entry against product Xorg component
Driver/Radeon, describe the problem and attach your config and log. The
log from the latest experimental would be nice, the one from latest
upstream git snapshot would be even better. A backtrace, especially one
with debugging information, would of course be interesting there.

I can NMU if the maintainers do not have time to work on in soon.
