I meant the image scaling. Yes, please give it a try.

By the way, there's a new xserver-xorg-video-ati snapshot entering
experimental very soon (1:6.8.1~git20080310.38606b08-1).

Does this mean that you will never be able to do some testing again? Or
do we just have to wait a bit (long)?

I am marking the bug the bug as moreinfo for now.

I don't think this could explain such a crash anyway.

Rah, I grepped the bug page for "xv" and "xvideo", but this one says
only "video" in the title, so I missed it. Sorry. Will try newer
version, but it make take me a day or two.

Hmm... Seems the interaction between emacs and mutt is broken in some
way. Here it is now.

Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0-1
Severity: important
Attach: /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

X segfaults more or less randomly when I play videos with xine through
the XVideo extension. It does not segfault immediately, I can play
videos for tens of seconds or minutes, and then suddenly it
segfaults. Or I start playing a video, I pause it, I do something else
on the computer (web browsing, email, development, ...), and suddenly
X segfaults. It seems to never happen as long as I have not played any
video since X restarted.

Xorg.0.log.old with backtrace attached.

IIRC, some bugs like this have been fixed more or less recently. Could
you try 2.2.1 (already in unstable), it may likely help.
See #452372 for instance.

Package: xdm
Version: 4.1.0-13
Severity: normal

What I think is wrong:
xdm sets PAM_RHOST to hostname:displaynumber

Pam documentation (The Linux-PAM Application Developers' Guide) states
that PAM_RHOST should be set to just the hostname.

This means that pam modules that check this info, eg, to do host based
access control, won't work. Eg, if pam_access is used to deny access
from certain remote hosts, xdm will introduce a security hole in the
system. I realise that host based access control can be done in
/etc/X11/xdm/Xaccess, but pam configuration is more flexable, and some
administrators may rely on pam and not know about the hole in xdm.

Sorry, no backtrace. The whole machine freezes.

I pulled from master. Are they really so much different? To be exact, I
pulled from master first some time after middle of December and upgraded
multiple times, but this bug never occured.

Yes, but that would require the bug to be always reproducable.
Currently, it's only sometimes reproducable.

Yes, there are many differences between these branches. It is very
possible that master fixes some problems like yours. So I am marking
this bug as fixed-upstream for now and we'll close it when we'll upload
a snapshot from master. If you ever reproduce again with a snapshot of
git master, please let us know.

Please install libx11-6-dbg and catch a debugging backtrace. It could be
another example of #417816 and friends where the application wrongly
passes image=NULL to XPutImage.

Comments/Problems: X11 problem; logfile below (Appendix B).

A. Description of the original install

A1. Complex & slow installation
Compared to a Mac OS X install, it took one hell of a long time and a
lot of entries, this on as defaulted
an install as possible (no task changes).

A2. I didn't know what TASKS to select; I wanted to be sure X11 was
included, but it wasn't clear how to get it.
(Added March 6: I've now scanned Unix for Dummies, and know that X11
is installed by default).

It got through the complete install, taking about 1/2 hour. I did a
couple of other things while the longer
tasks were taking place.
Eventually it finished and said it succeeded.

The only obvious preset that I overrode was choice of network
interface: it picked the first device (#0)
and the correct one was 1. THAT worked fine.

A3.I had a LOT of trouble entering a password AND DOING IT TWICE IN A
ROW for ROOT. At the third or fourth try

(and beyond) I looked at the keyboard and not the screen to be VERY
sure the right keys in my 18-character
password were being struck. They were - repeatedly. I'm not sure
whether the problem was that
 a. the password was too long, or

 b. being slow, I was holding the keys down inadvertently, causing
auto-repeats. The original and repeat
password screens being not visible at the same time, it wasn't
apparent if this was a problem.

I eventually gave up the long password and stuck with an 11 or so
character one, and it worked.

A5. After install, I immediately rebooted with root shutdown -r now,
and the smoke test worked -- except for
an X11 problem. Rebooted again to OS X and that was also fine (holding
down "x" key after chime).

A6. However YABOOT options to boot are mysterious:
  a. entering shows two boot options,
 Linuxold

  b. I assumed that entering the first letter of either would suffice;
it does NOT.

  c. entering does boot Linux.
  d. entering "Linux" does boot Linux.
  e. I haven't tried entering "old".

B. Concerns
B.1 Backup needed for disk untouched by install?

I was somewhat nervous about whether install would clobber my Mac OSX disk.

I even had just purchased a 2G stick to backup, and forgot to back up.
Only the intended Debian disk, ide1, was being touched by the install

So I wasn't very worried, just very careful to be sure the right
partition was chosen to install on: an
"unused" partition on ide1: set up under OS X. It was quite clear
from the prompts in Debian Installer

that the right one had been chosen, and all went as intended.
B.2 Having Debian pieces I couldn't use

I was somewhat concerned about buying the 4-DVD set, and as soon as
I'd ordered one for 4.0r2,
not a day later did 4.0r3 come out, so I needed the Debian cd #1 anyway.

A lousy $8 cost for DVD's? why waste it, if I only needed the first CD?

C. Thoughts

C.1 Debian is an incredibly comprehensive system. I'm surprised it
works at all, to the amazing credit of modern
programming teams, automated tools, etc. It still is far from being as
automated as Mac OS X is, but then
neither is anything else... which is why I'll keep OS X around and
only use Debian for my one, extremely
important, application, APLX, that requires it. (I don't have th

2008-03-11 Thread Erik Andresen
Package: xserver-xorg-input-kbd
Version: 1:1.2.2-3
Severity: important

Sometimes X doesn't seem to get the release event for the Super L (win
key):

For example, when I type only 't', my windows manager launches a terminal
which it should only launch on SuperL+'t'.

The only thing I can do then is killing X.

This problem started last weekend after upgrading xserver-xorg-input-kbd to
unstable and does happen every 2 days here.
I use this key a lot in a key combination to change the virtual Desktop.

Please note that I do not thing that this is a hardware problem, since I
had this problem already a few month ago. I reverted back to the
xserver-xorg-input-kbd in testing and the problem was gone.

Bug#470177: xserver-xorg-core: browswe display does not update cleanly

2008-03-11 Thread Michael Dressel

On Mon, 10 Mar 2008, Brice Goglin wrote:

Michael Dressel wrote:

Package: xserver-xorg-core

The display of the web browsers Epiphany and iceweasel seam not to be
updated properly. When I scroll down with the arrows horizontal stripes
appear. When I move another window across the browser it leaves
vertical and horizontal stripes. Clicking on the top bar of the browsers
window causes a clean redisplay. But there are still corrupted regions
around the slider bar.

Any chance you upgrade xserver-xorg-core and xserver-xorg-video-ati to
unstable to see whether the problem occurs there too?

Hi Brice,

thanks for your reply.

Aptitude complains about many conflicts when I try to update
xserver-xorg-core to sid. I also tried to update the virtual package
but that would cause conflicts too. So I didn't update.

Is there still a way how I could try the xserver from sid without
completely upgrading to sid?

Can you try with another driver instead of ati? Maybe vesa for instance?

In xorg.conf I replaced the line:
Driver "ati"
with:
Driver "vesa"
I'm not sure if this is enough? The result was that I could not
get into the GNOME desktop anymore.

Or s3 on the other board that seems to be installed in this machine?
I did not try it yet. This is an on-board card which uses the processors
RAM. I could do it for a test if this would assist you?

Cheers,
Michael

Bug#470541: compizconfig-settings-manager: python-gtk2 Dependency Missing

2008-03-11 Thread Sheridan Hutchinson
Package: compizconfig-settings-manager
Version: 0.6.0-3
Severity: important

Hi,

I'm a KDE man with the minimum amount of GTK/GNOME stuff installed.

I decided to play with compiz today and noticed that the settings
manager refuses to run without me manually installing python-gtk2 first.

Maybe this should be included as a dependency for the benefit of folk
like me?

I just checked the shutdown order in unstable on a machine with
dependency based boot sequencing enabled, and discovered a problem
with the init.d scripts provided in the xfs package. The init.d
script list S in its stop runlevel list. This make a useless stop
symlink in rcS.d/, and S should not be included there.

Here is a patch to solve these issues.

Bug#435684: xserver-xorg: X crashes when modifying gconf XKB setup

2008-03-11 Thread Pete White
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.3+10
Followup-For: Bug #435684

I recently experienced the same error. It took a while to figure out
how to log into a GDM session. Wiping out the old gconf folder got me back in.

At this point, any time the file
$HOME/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd/%gconf.xml is
modified with the Gnome keyboard preferences tool, X comes crashing down. The
only way to log back in is to remove the entries in that file. These are the
entries at the end of /var/log/Xorg.log.0.old

I guess that's due to the /usr/bin/X11 symlink being removed before the
prerm was called... There's nothing we can do about sarge->etch upgrades
now, so I'm closing this bug. xdm lives in /usr/bin now, so this
shouldn't happen again.

Bug#470581: xserver-xorg-video-ati: X exit while running xv apps (mplayer, totem, etc) when using randr sidebyside monitors and compiz

2008-03-11 Thread Alban Browaeys
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Severity: normal

Tracing with gdb from remote host I get only:
Program exited with code 0352.
when the "crash" happens (no freeze only X stop and gdm is fired up).

This happens when running mplayer/totem with xv so I first though it was
a critical bug in the driver. By cheer luck I found out it was because
compiz check max texture size against width and height to avoid issues
. but randr changes those width and height on the fly afterwards.
And bad things happens. I had a 1280x800 LVDS and a 800x600 TV which
made up 2080 just above my GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE of 2048 (radeon mobility
M25 X600 rev 0).

Sorry if you find out that this is not up to the driver to disable dri
on the fly if max texture is reached. Please forward it to compiz if so.

I made the test with 1:6.8.1~git20080310.38606b08-1 and then with source
(which I currently use thus the lack of version info). Though the issue
affects all versions at least in 6.8 branch.

Best regards
Alban

Please save the log of the "crashed" session (/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old if
X already restarted) and send it together with your xorg.conf.
