Hi,

I am excited to find that now there is a free driver for my video card.
unfortunately, it does not quite work yet, saying (full logs follow
below):

For comparison, here's part of Xorg.log when I use the fglrx driver:

|(II) fglrx(0): VESA VBE OEM Product Rev: 01.00
|(II) fglrx(0): ATI Video BIOS revision 9 or later detected

Thanks for packaging this, and I hope very much I can use my laptop
eliminating the non-free video driver.

Please upload this driver to unstable. Although not very featureful,
the driver is useful and has been working reliably for me for some
time. Additionally, version 1.0.0 was just released, for what that's
worth. :)

Bug#453839: xserver-xorg-video-ati: LCD backlight control regressions on RS482 (Radeon Xpress 200M)

2007-12-01 Thread Linas Žvirblis
Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.7.196-1
Severity: normal

Upgrading from 1:6.7.195-2 to 1:6.7.196-1 caused some things that worked
just fine to fail on HP Compaq nx6325 notebook with the infamous RS482
(Radeon Xpress 200M) video card.

1. LCD brightness control buttons no longer work. (Un)plugging power
cord also no longer changes the brightness. I can change it if I switch
to console, but on switching back to X it is restored to what it was.

2. Putting display into power saving mode correctly switches the
backlight off, but after some time it sometimes turns back on, and does
not turn off until display is put into power saving mode again.

Bug#453844: xserver-xorg-video-ati: TV-out does not work on RS482 (Radeon Xpress 200M)

2007-12-01 Thread Linas Žvirblis
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Package: xserver-xorg-video-ati
Version: 1:6.7.196-1
Severity: normal

TV-out does not work on HP Compaq nx6325 notebook with the infamous
RS482 (Radeon Xpress 200M) video card (yes, I know that Xpress chips are
not well supported).

The output looks like a black screen with some noise which changes
depending on what is displayed on LCD screen, so I guess it does output
something, but not correctly.

I am using xrand to enable TV-out:

xrandr --addmode S-video 800x600
xrandr --output S-video --mode 800x600

Although the cable is connected, it insists that it is not:

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1400 x 1050, maximum 1400 x 1200
VGA-0 unknown connection (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
   1280x800 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
LVDS connected 1400x1050+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
305mm x 228mm
   1400x1050 60.0*+
   1280x800 60.0
   1280x768 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x60060.3
   640x48059.9
S-video disconnected 800x600+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y
axis) 0mm x 0mm
   800x60060.3*

I thought this was related to PAL/NTSC, but setting the TV standard via
xrand changes nothing:

xrandr --output S-video --set tv_standard pal

Often mouse drift causes the display to wake up.

I have no clue why this happens again since xterm isn't updated for long
time.

When I start xterm I get:
mesg: error: tty device is not owned by group `tty'

~> ls -l `tty`
crw--w 1 klaus utmp 136, 10 2007-11-25 11:11 /dev/pts/10

If I chgrp of /usr/bin/xterm to tty it works well.

Is there any reason the xterm binary is group utmp? And then why is this
long fixed bug opened again?

Hello,

I just did several debugging as the problem reappears randomly. And
finally I found the problem. First, it is not a bug of xterm than more
of pbuilder or even the kernel.

The problem appears if using pbuilder with the option (default)
USEDEVPTS=yes. The reason is that pbuilder do NOT specify the group of
the filesystem and so it defaults to 5(tty).

Well, this is the source of the problem. But the real problem is that
the kernel only provides ONE shared devpts! So after using pbuilder
every time the devpts is using the default group.

So, many thanks for the fast reaction. The bug is completely closed (It
was even not a bug (this time) of xterm.)

Regards

I don't know whether TV output on RS482 has been tested. But FWIW, load
detection
of the TV output is disabled by default (it creates some problems in
some cases). That's
probably why xrandr says S-video is disconnected. To reenable TV load
detection (and
maybe get xrandr to report S-video as connected), try:
xrandr --output S-video --set load_detection 1

Can you try the latest upstream git to see whether it fixes these?

To build it, see http://bgoglin.livejournal.com/10936.html (and change
"intel" into "ati").

Did you actually check that suspend to ram *never* works with the NV driver?
on all supported hardware? There are many things involved in suspend to ram,
including the kernel, the X server and the driver.

What problem are you experiencing? This bug report is pretty useless without
any detail about the problem. Did you try passing |acpi_sleep=s3_bios to the
kernel command line?|

+Subject: [PATCH] Leave hardware-specified preferred modes alone when user
preference exists.
+
+Instead of removing the preference bit marking the hardware declared mode
+preference, leave it in place and just move the user preferred mode to the
+front of the list while marking it with the USERPREF bit which will cause it
+to be selected by the initial mode selection code.

Hi operator,
can you resend the message only to debian-x@lists.debian.org and me?
The address you used before is "special" and cannot be forwarded
"simple" emails.

Also, include the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Bug#342817: 342817: nvidia hangs system continues

2007-12-01 Thread Ross Boylan
found 342817 1:2.1.3-1
retitle 342817 nv open source driver hangs system with GeForce 6600 PCIe
thanks

I thought I'd give this another try, since the proprietary drivers (as
packaged for Debian) are unavailable for the 2.6.22 kernels. As before,
it hangs the system so badly that only a manual power off fixes things.

For me, this bug is very severe: it hangs the entire system, and exposes
me to security risks because I must stay with an older kernel.

Ross
