Bug#452167: ALT TAB now locks system! Must reboot

2007-11-21 Thread jidanni
Mouse still moves... sounds like my problem:

Holy moly, now "Hold down ALT, press TAB" locks the whole system.
Even the linux-doc-2.6.*/Documentation/sysrq.txt.gz keys can't break
out of it very well often.

At the the time I was in
-xdm
   `-sh /home/jidanni/.xsession
   |-icewm-session
   | |-icewm
   | |-icewmbg
   | `-icewmtray
And ALT TAB TAB... is normally how I switch around icewm windows, and
there have been no new versions of icewm, but there have for X windows.

Bug#451571: xserver-xorg-video-intel: uses lots of CPU with Compiz and (new default) EXA

Not really; the problem is that GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is
implemented inefficiently. XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps just happens to make it
usable, at the cost of basically disabling 2D acceleration. While the
same workaround could be implemented for EXA, there's little point in
using it (or XAA, for that matter) at all in that case. So there's
really no point in implementing such an option for EXA, compared to just
switching to XAA.

With the i915tex Mesa driver (or the i915 driver from upstream Git, but
that also requires xserver Git), EXA allows for more efficient
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap together with 2D acceleration, but
unfortunately this is difficult to set up.

It's all kind of messy at the moment, but work is going on upstream to
make it all work nicely out of the box in the hopefully not too distant
future.

Oh that's very interesting, thanks! The same problem has been reported
lately at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11453

Only 2048x2048 is supposed to work. Bigger virtual screen were kind of
working before, looks like it is not the case anymore.

And indeed the initial reported uses 3000x1600. Dylan, does it help
if you reduce your Virtual config or switch to NoAccel ?

Please stop filling people bug reports with crap. We do not break
the X server on purpose. We do our best to avoid problems and yes
sometimes it does not work (if you are using unstable, you have to
accept what it means). People like you just make things worse

by annoying us instead of helping like other reporters do.

Yes to both: I reported that switching to NoAccel works in my initial
report, and I just checked: reducing the Virtual config also works.

They remain very useful...

The old driver used to disable the 3D acceleration on wide screens.
Disabling of the 2D acceleration in addition is annoying.

Bug#451917: xserver-xorg-video-intel: upgrade from 2:2.1.1-4 to 2:2.2.0-1 breaks X for g33 chipset

2007-11-21 Thread Brice Goglin

Alan W. Irwin wrote:

Here are the results of my tests now. The Debian testing version of xorg
works fine on the graphical chip in my g33 chipset (ASUS P5K-V MB).
xorg.conf uses a gtf-generated [EMAIL PROTECTED] modeline. The Debian unstable
version of xorg using xserver-xorg-video-intel version 2:2.1.1-4 works fine
as well with exactly the same xorg.conf file. If the Debian unstable
version of xorg is kept exactly the same except and "upgrade" of the
xserver-xorg-video-intel package to either 2:2.1.99-1 or 2:2.2.0-1,

X -probeonly

completely locks up (no access to keyboard). So the problem was introduced
between 2:2.1.1-4 and 2:2.1.99-1.

Can you try adding
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"
to your Device section in /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

It's a random idea, but it looks EXA being the default causes some
problems...

Finally, I suggest you find some temporary means to keep the present
unstable version of xorg from being deployed to Debian testing until this
bug is fixed. I believe g33 chipset owners using Debian testing (which
works right now for me and presumably them) will be severely
disappointed if that precaution is not taken.

Right. So far, it can't enter testing because Xserver 1.4 can't either
anyway.

Bug#452268: all fonts are unreadable

2007-11-21 Thread Ondrej Certik
Package: xserver-xorg
Version: 1:7.2-5
Severity: serious

--- Please enter the report below this line. ---

I use unstable and in some recent upgrade (I think yesterday, or the day
before that), all fonts became unreadable. When I start xterm in
.xsession, the font is readable, but whenever I start gnome-session, or
kde, or xfce, or kate, or openoffice or gnome-terminal from the xterm, it's
completely unusable, because I cannot read anything - there are black
rectangles instead of the letters in all fonts.

So I did

$ sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-core

changed sources.list from unstable to testing

$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install xorg

and everything started to work again. So the bug is clearly in xorg somewhere.
Any ideas?

Please ask for more information, I don't know what could be relevant as
I don't understand fonts much.

Thanks,
Ondrej

Please send the whole output of
/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1
after reinstalling the xserver-xorg-core and drivers from unstable.

Assuming the bug is in xserver-xorg-core, you might want to try 2:1.4-3
which was in unstable one week ago and is downloadable from
http://snapshot.debian.net/archive/2007/09/30/debian/pool/main/x/xorg-server/

Yes, see #439210. Adding Option "AccelMethod" "XAA" to the device
section in xorg.conf as a workaround should work.

Bug#451917: xserver-xorg-video-intel: continued report for XAA possibility

2007-11-21 Thread Alan W. Irwin
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.2.0-1
Followup-For: Bug #451917

XAA was a nice idea, which I thought might work, but it didn't help. X
-probeonly still gives complete lockup for version 2:2.2.0-1 of
xserver-xorg-video-intel while there are no X problems for version 2.1.1-4
of that package.

>From the log below xaa is only loaded after the error message

(EE) intel(0): First SDVO output reported failure to sync

which I still think is an important diagnostic.

Let me know if there are any other tests I can run to help you narrow this
problem down.

Bug#451571: xserver-xorg-video-intel: uses lots of CPU with Compiz and (new default) EXA

2007-11-21 Thread brian m. carlson

On Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 12:19:25PM +0100, Michel Dänzer wrote:

Not really; the problem is that GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is
implemented inefficiently. XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps just happens to make it
usable, at the cost of basically disabling 2D acceleration. While the
same workaround could be implemented for EXA, there's little point in
using it (or XAA, for that matter) at all in that case. So there's
really no point in implementing such an option for EXA, compared to just
switching to XAA.

Ah. That explains a lot. However, XVideo doesn't work with XAA, while
it does with EXA. Upstream has no intention of fixing this, AFAIK.
Which means that programs (like miro) that don't allow disabling XVideo
don't work with XAA. Oops.

With the i915tex Mesa driver (or the i915 driver from upstream Git, but
that also requires xserver Git), EXA allows for more efficient
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap together with 2D acceleration, but
unfortunately this is difficult to set up.

How do I enable the i915tex driver? It seems it's already present in
libgl1-mesa-dri.

* Add 03_request_16bit_depth.diff
We set the default depth for savage chips to 16bpp in the xserver
debconfage. This patch has the driver request that depth from the
server during init. If the user doesn't override this depth, it should be
used by the server, thus allowing us to drop this special case from the
  debconfage.

simply fell off you radar...

Bug#452357: xserver-xorg-video-intel: 945GM always crashes within 10 seconds of login

2007-11-21 Thread Andrew McMillan
Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel
Version: 2:2.1.1-4
Severity: important

Note that the version above is given because I have had to downgrade
this package to have a usable system. The problems are with version
2.2.0-1, which crashes about 10 seconds after I log in. To recover I am
forced to downgrade the driver to 2.1.1-4 *and* to reboot the system.

The logs that I have of the crash are, I think of the subsequent
failures to start the X server after the original crash, rather than the
crash itself. If it would be helpful I can try and get one of just the
first crash and attach it.

Thanks,
Andrew McMillan.
