I think generally only symbols starting with 'glu[A-Z]' are supposed to
be public.

Why don't we ask upstream directly, shall we? :} Adding the mesa3d-dev

Go ahead and implement it and submit a patch to bugzilla. Sounds good

Bug#435684: xserver-xorg: Error activating XKB configuration

I upgraded to Debian Etch. `apt-get dist-upgrade`

I'm running a plain Etch gnome and X.

I *can* upgrade the X packages to testing or unstable, but I *don't
want to*, given the current track record. e.g. the fact that upgrading
will bring down a ton of other ***unnecessary dependencies that
could have been avoided if the testing packages had been compiled
against the minimum dependencies (http://www.mkgnu.net/?q=node/103) of
the software. Not to mention that for the past 4 years after I start X
if I switch back to a text console the text looks jagged, permanently
(but not if the system is just booting).

At this point I want things to work as expected. It was working with
Debian 3.0. It should work now.

I just tried this but it does not help. I still get the same error message.

(unrelated) I just removed it. Of course, *I* never added those
modules there. The X tools did. If they are not loading, why don't the
X tools resolve this ?

Well, you know, these dependencies may bring new features, bug fixes,
better documentation, higher speed, make coffee, ...

This URL does not work. But anyway, there is no point in building
testing packages against old dependencies. backports.org takes care of
building for older systems, but it does look not ready on the X.org side
yet.

Since it's a Gnome window, it might just be Gnome related. I asked some
Gnome guys. It looks like there are bugs in the XKB libs, and there is
no easy way to workaround them. For now you should change your keyboard
layout in Gnome until the XKB libs accept them. Try resetting to a
default layout first (until the warning disappears) and then applying
your required changes.

If Gnome refuses because of the above message, you might have to change
directly in the gconf database, we'll see.

Because it just a warning. Modifying your config file automatically from
a script is not trivial (because people tweak them), so it's not
necessary worth doing it for such a warning.

I've identified the problem now - it is a bug in the dpkg-cross
diversion of dpkg-buildpackage where $ENV{'MAKEFLAGS'} is overridden to
force CC=arm-linux-gnu-gcc on the make command line, hence the need for
'override' to undo it. Oops.

The current version of libx11-6 in unstable does still fail to
cross-build with the same error, so this bug still applies (for now).

The first patch works "in upstream mode", i.e. if autoconf and automake
are added to debian/rules so that the Makefile.in is refreshed and a
refreshed configure script generated to put those changes into
obj-foo/src/util/Makefile. (AC_SUBST is not needed).

Feel free to commit that first patch upstream (reproduced here unchanged):

Clean up tv mode name allocation and copy.

TV mode names used to contain the signalling standard along with the pixel
size. The signalling has been moved to the TV_FORMAT property, but the
allocation and initialization of the mode name was left a bit messy as a
result.

xserver-xorg-video-intel override disparity

2007-08-14 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

xserver-xorg-video-i810_2.1.1-1_all.deb: package says section is oldlibs,
override says x11.

Either the package or the override file is incorrect. If you think
the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package
so that this disparity is fixed in the next upload. If you feel the
override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

[NB: this is an automatically generated mail; if you replied to one
like it before and have not received a response yet, please ignore
this mail. Your reply needs to be processed by a human and will be in
due course, but until then the installer will send these automated
mails; sorry.]

Hi,

can the override be changed? xserver-xorg-video-i810 is a real package
in etch, but a transitional package in lenny and sid.

There's an issue with master applying the same DDC channel to both
ports on some cards. I'm looking into it. It looks like the same
connector is in the bios table twice. Because the driver thinks both
channels are using the same port, they are both seeing the same
monitor.  See bug 11781:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11781
As a work around for now you can specify a monitorlayout to disable
the secondary head:
Option "MonitorLayout" "CRT, NONE"

Bug#436336: Me too

2007-08-14 Thread Willi Mann
Hi!

I have the same (or similar) issue. But for me. not only the screen is
currupted, the whole machine freezes. (I tried to ssh onto it from
another host) This occurs at probably 5 to 10 % of all switches to VT.
And it also occured once when I wanted to logout from KDE.

It experience this issue since the latest upgrade (2:2.0.0-5 -> 2:2.1.0-2).

Hardware: 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM
Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02)

If there anything I can do to help fixing this issue, let me know.

Willi

I found another xdm bug. This time it's a race condition in

xc/programs/xdm/policy.c:Willing

around line numbers 140--145, which reads

if ((fd = popen(willing, "r")))
{
char *s = NULL;
while(!(s = fgets(statusBuf, 256, fd)) && errno == EINTR)
;

Here's the problem. The "popen" call creates a child process and a
pipe to communicate with it. If the child process exits during the
"fgets" call without generating any output, the parent process
receives SIGCHLD and the read system call gets interrupted. Therefore
errno == EINTR, and since the child has exited the pipe never returns
any data. xdm goes into an infinite loop. I think the problem is
that fgets doesn't reset errno to zero; we have to do that manually.
The fix is the trivial patch attached to this email.

(The child process is the "Xwilling" script; in the case of the default
Debian configuration it is

"su nobody -c /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xwilling")

Please turn on Xft support, so that the xdm greeter can at last look
much better (simply installing libxft-dev and rebuilding the package
from debian sources enables Xft support).

The program xdm is installed as /usr/bin/xdm. However, the rc
script requires /etc/X11/default-display-manager to contain
the string /usr/bin/X11/xdm.

I suggest to use something like

...

 if [ "$HEED_DEFAULT_DISPLAY_MANAGER" = "true" ] &&

Note to self: set submitter to Chip Coldwell <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
once an ack is recived for this bug.

I don't think there are any security implications to this bug, since
unprivileged users cannot kill the (root-owned) Xwilling process (which is
a script that lives in /etc/X11 on Debian, and is not writable by users).

Since the only people who could use this vector to DoS xdm have root
privileges anyway, this bug merits severity "normal".

For a more direct method of DoSsing xdm as root, try:
   kill -STOP $(pidof xdm)

I found another xdm bug. This time it's a race condition in

xc/programs/xdm/policy.c:Willing

around line numbers 140--145, which reads

if ((fd = popen(willing, "r")))
{
char *s = NULL;
while(!(s = fgets(statusBuf, 256, fd)) && errno == EINTR)
;

The touchpad used to work. I usually use a USB mouse, so maybe it took a
longtime for me to realise.

Today I touched the mouse and no reply at all, not to the buttons either. I
though it was because I had the USB mouse plugged in, so I thought it was a
good idea. But I unplugged the USB mouse and, still, no response at all on
the touchpad.

Your bug report lacks a lot of important information. Next time please
use the 'reportbug' tool which will include that information in your
report.
Please run '/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg-core/script 3>&1' and send the
output to this bug.

x11-common.postinst dies in several places in the function find_culprits
with "argument list too long". It appears to be trying to expand glob
patterns that look like this:

/var/lib/dpkg/info/*.list

as in:

ls -1 $_dpkg_info_dir/*.list

This of course fails if you have a lot of packages installed, preventing
pretty much anything that even thinks about X11 from installing.

Fixing this problem by replacing the code with the following:

find $_dpkg_info_dir/. -name '*.list'

simply causes the problem to recur on the following lines, which have
similar scaling issues.

Something like this code to generate $_smoking_guns would be better:

find $_dpkg_info_dir/. -name '*.list' -print0 |
egrep -zv '(xbase-clients|x11-common|xfs|xlibs)' |
xargs -0 grep -l "$1"

although there are some error cases that are caught by the existing code
in the package that aren't caught by the above code.

It would at least be able to process an unlimited number of packages.

Closing since this broken code is unused today, so the bug can't occur
anymore. The code is still there as a part of our xsfbs scripts (which
is automatically included and supposed to go away in the future). I'll
see if I can remove this code from xsfbs once I am sure no other package
use it anymore.

Hi,

I am trying to see what to do with this old bug, but I don't see yet why
COLUMNS would be set to 0 and why we should support this (buggy?) case.
Do you guys know any valid use of COLUMNS=0 ?

I had a quick try with 2.1.2-2. (Clean install of Lenny over the weekend).
Still not working. Symptoms appear to be the same. (I've also added the
same info to the upstream bug report).

Cheers

Bug#437961: xdm: loading Xresources fails because bindir/xrdb does not exist

2007-08-14 Thread Aaron M. Ucko
Package: xdm
Version: 1:1.1.5-1
Severity: normal

The latest xdm upload introduced a nasty regression: the
DisplayManager.xrdb xdm-config resource defaults to bindir/xrdb (sic)
rather than /usr/bin/xrdb. As a result, xdm fails to load
/etc/X11/xdm/Xresources, defaulting to a relatively unattractive
configuration.

Could you please fix it?

Thanks!

Bug#368818: x11-common: insufficient error checking in Xsession can prevent users from logging in

No, there is no valid reason for COLUMNS=0. There have been versions of
'resize' which incorrectly reported sizes of 0 on various terminals,
but such buggy version are hard to find these days (as are actual
terminals, :) so it may simply be a matter of those bugs no longer
being triggered). As I noted in my original report, this behaviour was
some underlying bug which I was never able to find. I don't entirely
understand the whole logic of Xsession and Xsession.d, so I'm not sure
what, if anything, in the scripts was causing COLUMNS=0. Perhaps some
version of my shell was buggy. (I think tcsh users were _not_
affected, but I no longer recall).

I, personally, think the error check is trivial and worth it, but of
course the final decision is up to you. I've just tested removing
COLUMNS=80 from the script, and it seems to be working fine, so I'm OK
with the bug being closed.
