After the last apt-get -t experimental upgrade, the ati driver got updated to
1:6.6.3-5. This started crashing the server on certain actions. Two
that I was able to consistently reproduce were the server hanging after some
inactivity (When screen saver would go on to blank the screen), or
trying to play the lbreakout2 game.

I downgraded to 1:6.6.3-2 and now everything works fine.

Hi,

I had to downgrade the server to 6.8.2.dfsg.1-11 to get X to
stop crashing. Unfortunately, /var/log/Xorf.0.log does not retain
more than one version, so back trace details are missing. But this
seems like a regression in radeon.drv

As you see from the included files, I got a strange "clock range" and then
all video modes were rejected and the xserver gave up.

xserver-xorg version 6.8.2 did not do this.

When using a login manager (xdm, gdm) X locks up when exiting session.
If I ssh in and kill X the login manager will respaw properly. But I am
then unable to switch out to a console. Also XFree86 will use 99% of the
processor while it is locked up.

I am running on a Toshiba Sattelite 2805-S201 with a Savage MX/IX
chipset.

using startx or xinit function properly.

On a 400 mhz slot-loading iMac, with the dri module loaded:
When using: Option "ForcePCIMode" (disabling agpgart)
If this is enabled, X starts up fine. However, when any GL application is
started, it will run for a few seconds and then crash the xserver. At
this point, the cursor may still move, but there is no response to the keyboard
or mouse, and a force reboot is required. Nothing interesting
shows up in the log file; the only differences between the two logs are the
absence of the errors about the CCE and the use of PCI instead of
agp.

When not using this option (using agpgart):
X draws extremely slowly (it takes so long that start a gl application is
impractical). X does respond to key presses and mouse movement, but
this is also extremely slow (It takes over a minute to switch to a virtual
terminal). The following shows up in the
log file:

(EE) R128(0): R128CCEWaitForIdle: (DEBUG) CCE idle took i = 1025
(EE) R128(0): Idle timed out, resetting engine...

Other driver options do not affect this.
Indirect rendering (without the dri module) works fine.

The following is a log without the "ForcePCIMode" option.

Package: gnome-session
Version: 2.14.3-1
Severity: important

There is something weird happening when I attempt to start GNOME with
my session settings (included below), namely the startup begins
normally and then kaboom the session ends prematurely and I am
returned to the login manager (or shell where startx was invoked).
My prime suspect for this behaviour is the fact that I am using
two display setup without Xinerama and therefor there has to be two
instances of my favourite window manager FVWM (currently from Debian
package fvwm-gnome 2.5.17-1) and given that there has already been
reports on that gnome-session fails to launch multiple instances of
xterm, my problems may be related to that. I've tried with another
user account, where the window manager is sawfish and there seems to
be no problem. Also on a laptop I manage to run the very same GNOME
and FVWM versions fine, but there I have just one screen, so the
problem most likely has something to do with my desktop dualhead X
configuration.

Hello,

This is my Device section:

Section "Device"
Identifier "ATI Technologies, Inc. Radeon R250 Lf [FireGL 9000]"
Driver "ati"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
# Option "MonitorLayout" "LVDS, CRT"
# Option "BIOSHotkeys" "on"
EndSection

earlier today I uncommented the two commented line to make sure to have
video output on the external VGA, and it worked.

Later on, however, I restarted X without video output and instead of
having gdm I'd have the screen circling between all read, all green, all
blue and so on.

Recommenting the two options made xorg start again.

Cheers,

Enrico

Hello,

on my desktop machine with Radeon X800 GTO, DPMS standby does not work
when "xlock -mode blank" is active. The monitor just does not go off,
though standy works usually when no xlock runs. This alone would
indicate a problem in xlock, but I see messages in Xorg.0.log, appearing
every five seconds:

(**) RADEON(0): RADEONSaveScreen(2)
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONSaveScreen(2)
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONSaveScreen(2)
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONSaveScreen(2)
(**) RADEON(0): RADEONSaveScreen(2)

So I assume that something has been prepared for the DPMS standby but is
looping somehow, somewhere.

I would happily test patches if you suggest some.

Eduard.

Hi

Usually I use "ati" driver, but I was looking for DRI support (to test compiz).
I tried "atimisc". However with atimisc xorg does not start:

dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/atimisc_drv.so: undefined symbol:

I do not know the origins of this symbol. Can you please give me some hints ?

Hi,
on the secondary head of an Radeon 9600 Dual-DVI the colors are
completely broken. Displays are 1600x1200 IBM L200p, both via DVI.

Color example (Digicam 800x600 scaled)
http://silicon-verl.de/home/flo/falsecolor_9600_dualdvi.jpg

Its not a hardware problem as windows shows correct colors.

Not only the colors are broken but also the hardware cursor on the
secondary head. While snapping to window edges one should get a different
cursor - Instead the cursor just jumps.

BTS cleaning done

2007-07-24 Thread Brice Goglin
I just did my last round of close-after-one-month-ping-timeout. So the
major part of the BTS cleaning is now done. I have some statistics about
source/binary packages and bug numbers that have been closed at
http://alioth.debian.org/~bgoglin-guest/XSFBTS/

As of now, there are about 800 bugs remaining (apart from 122 wontfix)
whose severities are
18 serious
   173 important
   298 normal
87 minor
   235 wishlist
and status are
   647 unclassified/moreinfo/patch
11 pending
   153 forwarded

Actually, I still have to forward a couple dozens upstream, commit a
couple dozens minor things (once I'll get my freedesktop account...),
and a long list of bugs to look at more precisely. So I guess you'll
still hear about me a bit. But the good news is that the BTS flood on
debian-x is done :)

Comments/Problems:

Unexpected X-problems: the dpkg-configure left the machine not starting
X; (my trusted) XFree86 -configure didn't find a mouse; xf86cfg neither.
Some 'no screens found' inbetween, as well.
Finally, I had to change the XF86Config manually to get it finding the
optical USB-wheel-mouse (the famous ZAxisMapping; and "IMPS/2" plus
"/dev/input/mice").
No flames here, but the third OS on that exactly same hardware went
through without *any* tweaking of any parameter; just install, reboot;
XFree86 -configure and ready. For some the least likely contender for
simplicity: OpenBSD 3.5. This is why I wrote 'unexpected'.
And don't flame me for wrong pseudo-package; please; we'd expect Debian
to *install* one fine day without hangs and tweaks on standard hardware
like a DELL notebook.

Thanks !

Which can be also seen in

work is impressive. In fact, it was behind my commitment to make such stats
in order to demonstrate the raw power of the Goglin-kin. :-)

Thanks.

Bug#430819: xserver-xorg: update breaks X with spurious AIGLX error

2007-07-24 Thread J.J.Green

Hi Brice

Before I reassign to fluxbox, please try
   startx /usr/bin/xterm
then run fluxbox from the xterm in there and tell us what happens. If
the problem is only fluxbox related, you should get your X and xterm
back after fluxbox exited on startup.

Looks like it is: fluxbox fails to start with an
"Abort" to stdout, and I get back the X and xterm.
Trace is attached, seems to be a segfault whilst
reading /tmp/.X11-unix/X0

Cheers

Good to know, thanks. This socket is used by fluxbox to communicate with
the X server through the X library. So it could be either fluxbox
crashing because it does not use some X calls correctly, or a bug in a X
library. It reminds me of bug #431746 where xinerama not being reported
correctly by the sever causes some clients to crash.

The next step would be to catch this segfault in gdb so that we know
where the crash occurs. Running 'gdb fluxbox' and entering 'bt full'
after the segfault will give you a backtrace (we might need to install
some debugging packages to get a full backtrace, we'll see).

The config file doesn't include a font path at all these days. Also,
please think of the kittens, don't use core fonts. Truetype fonts work
out of the box with apps which use client-side fonts.

I recently purchased a 20" 16:10 aspect ratio lcd monitor from apple. I
discovered, however, that X did not seem to have modelines for it by
default. I used http://koala.ilog.fr/cgi-bin/nph-colas-modelines to
generate some, which I have tested to work on my monitor (apple 20"
cinema display).

I added the following to my XF86Config-4:

# DDC did not detect vsync and hsync on my monitor, set manually

And in my "Monitor" section:
UseModes"16:10"

Other users may want these modes to be in the standard database.

Thank you.

I've run normal dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86. I used psaux for my
mouse. I used kernel 2.4, and then installed 2.6. Everything worked
well, but my mouse began running very quickly.

What happened is that my XF86Config-4 file contained two mouse sections
- one for "generic mouse", and one for "configured mouse".
kernel 2.6 combined the two, and my mouse speed doubled.

Have a good day,
Noam

This is a bizzare problem and it took me a while to figure out how to
reproduce it. On my laptop I configured Synaptics touchpad and USB
mouse. If I set device option "AGPMode" "4" whenever I start X without
USB mouse plugged or if I unplug the mouse while X is running, the whole
system hardlocks. The keyboard does not respond, and the screen is not
updated, i.e. all open applications stay frozen. Mice surprisingly can move
the cursor, but mouse buttons don't respond. It seems that processor is
under heavy load during that time, since the fan goes on very soon.

If I leave default AGPMode, everything works fine, and I can plug and
unplug USB mouse as many times as I want. I've been doing that while
writing this report ;-). By the way setting AGPMode to 4 does not
improve performance (glxgears give same results regardless whether it is
1 or 4).

Cheers,
Slaven

(patch follows)

Ive found that current versions of xserver-xfree86 on Debian are capable
of detecting the 1280x768 native resolution of my sceptre display via
DDC. This option is missing however from the list of available modes in
the template for dpkg-configure.

Ive submitted a patch (diff -u) below to add this to the template.

Works nicely. If I leave all modes out, X detects some higher
resolution (lcd firmware bug) so I need to be able to select the native
resolution via dpkg-configure. Might also include 1600x1024 ;-)

Thanks :)

want dual head config in ati radeon 7500

This card present on some laptops (Dell Inspiron 5100...) has the LCD
display, aux monitor, and TV out.

Other monitor can be configured to extend screen, buy by default debconf
just configure main screen and both displays displays the same.

Using the siliconmotion driver and attaching an external display I get
corrupted pixels on the right hand side (note not on the bottom as well)
beyond where the display would have stopped.

e.g. my internal display does 1024x768 and the external LCD does
1280x1024 so anything from 1024 -> 1280 is corrupted. The corruption
takes the form of two copies of the righthand most parts of the display
which look normal with blues changed to red and then blues changed to
green.

It sounds like:
http://bugs.xfree86.org/show_bug.cgi?id=727

I've not been able to build X myself to test this yet however. I need
to find a host with enough disk and time to do it.

Simon.

XFree86 is now only in oldstable, and the xserver-xfree86 package will
be removed from unstable soon. I'm thus closing this bug as fixed in
Xorg. Thanks for your report and for following up!

Hi Vassilii,

do you mean that the problem doesn't happen with the Xorg X server?
If so, I think this bug can be closed. In any case, it's always better
to explicitly say when you start X which vt you want it to use.

This one might be related (fixed in #228):

 * fix missing assignment for UTF-8 parsing in widget initialization

The effect of that was to make the first character not necessarily decoded
properly - particularly when starting xterm as itself rather than via the
uxterm script.

You can disregard my comments. Today everything works fine (I have no
idea why)... Maybe a package that was not yet fully installed.

My apologies for the inconvenience.

Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-3
Severity: minor

Sometimes using the framebuffer device can lead to problems (for example
when using nvidia drivers). The error message from the X server is not
very verbose:

EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

Nobody can know that this can be the result of using framebuffer.
It would be good, if debconf displays an extra warning to the question
of whether using the framebuffer device, like:

If you get the error message "no screens found" and
/var/log/XFree86.0.log contains the line
"EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.",
then this is possibly the result of using the framebuffer
device. Try turning this option off, by running
"dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and see if the error goes
away.

I would say this is more a bug of the actual X server, but this message
could help newbies a lot by showing them a frequent cause of problems.

Maybe this problem is the one of bug #157924:
"xserver-xfree86: [nv] no screens found on GeForce2 MX DDR rev 178"

(I do not send the content of my /var/log/XFree86.0.log, because it
wouldn't help here.)

Tag 'xfonts-100dpi-1_1.0.0-4' created by Julien Cristau <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> at

Tagging upload of xfonts-100dpi 1:1.0.0-4 to unstable.

Changes since the dawn of time:
Branden Robinson (4):
Set svn:keywords property to "Id" (keyword already present).
Note probable out-of-dateness of maplink() function body.
Add high-level documentation to XSFBS shell library, intended to reduce

Hi,

The copyright file in this package does not include
the location of the upstream sources, which is a violation of
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightfile
("the copyright file must say where the upstream sources (if any) were
obtained").

Julien Cristau told me that "the xfonts-* packages include a bunch of
different fonts from http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/individual/font/
I'll fix the copyright file, thanks for noticing." :)

I guess you are using the nvidia binary driver, right? We had several
bug reports about compiz on nvidia recently, do you have another machine
with another vendor's graphic board and a free 3D driver to try to
reproduce without nvidia-glx?

Hi,

The copyright file in this package does not include
the location of the upstream sources, which is a violation of
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightfile
("the copyright file must say where the upstream sources (if any) were
obtained").

Julien Cristau told me that "the xfonts-* packages include a bunch of
different fonts from http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/individual/font/
I'll fix the copyright file, thanks for noticing." :)

   * Update Debian copyright file.
+ Remove Adobe copyright notices; nothing in the upstream sources
case-insensitive matches "adobe", let alone bears a copyright notice of
   theirs.
+ Add many copyright notices, licenses, and other notations of status
(such as "public domain") from upstream sources.
+ Add other information required by Debian Policy §12.5.
   * Update package description.
+ Stop claiming that the package also provides font file manipulation
utilities. It no longer does; those moved to xfonts-utils. (To aid
transitions, xfonts-base should have grown a dependency on xfonts-utils,
but etch is out now and it's too late to help people upgrading from

+ Stop documenting the dependency on xutils; debhelper now worries about

It would be good if someone also addressed the description problems I
mentioned in my mail to debian-x the other day - particularly this
paragraph which still exists in 1.0.0-5:

This package contains primarily fonts in the ISO 10646-1 and ISO 8859-1
encodings, to conserve disk space. (A small selection of fonts in ISO
  8859-8, JIS-X0208.1983, JIS-X0208.1976, and GB2312.1980 fonts are also
included.) For other encodings, see the xfonts-base-transcoded package.

I tried it initially without the nvidia-glx and nvidia kernel module,
then I got that white screen.

By the way: WITH the nvidia-glx and kernel-module I get
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with direct rendering.
GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is not available with indirect rendering.
Aborting!

Bug#425451: I did reply to your ping!

2007-07-24 Thread David

Hello, Brice,

I did reply to your ping. But it seems that this bug is n-plicated. The last
stage of things is here:

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=425882

so the bug is not solved yet.

Maybe you are not paying too much attention here because 425882 is against
the obsolete xserver-xorg-video-i810

So I would suggest:

1) Forward this bug 425882 against xserver-xorg-video-intel
2) Archive the rest of the bugs like this (as the latest information is in
425882 and other bugs can mislead).
3) Of course, try to fix it :-) I will help as much as I can.

Thank you,

David

Ok fine, as long as we still have this one open, we don't care about the
other being closed.

The version number of the package matters more here actually. You
reported against version 2:2.0.0-1, that's the same than
xserver-xorg-video-intel from our point of view, so it's far from obsolete.

Don't worry, this bug in my queue of important things to take care of
soon. But they are several dozens other X-related bugs in this list and
I don't have time to do all this immediately, but it will happen in the
"near" future :)

Note that we usually don't fix this kind of bugs ourself, we talk to the
actual developer (either by reporting a bug at bugzilla.freedesktop.org
or by irc/mail) and try some patches.

compiz (maybe since 0.5) apparently comes with most plugins disabled.
You need to enable several plugins, for instance with gconf-editor. I'd
say "cube", "rotate", "place", "plane", "wobbly", "scale" at least.

Note that there are dependencies between plugins, so you need to place
them in a correct order in the list. Each plugin has a "require" option
which tells you which other plugins should be loaded earlier.

I currently have
$ gconftool --get /apps/compiz/general/allscreens/options/active_plugins
[gconf,decoration,wobbly,fade,minimize,cube,rotate,zoom,scale,move,place,switcher,screenshot,water,resize]

I know that's a pain... Graphical configurators are supposed to arrive
in the near future.

Are you running KDE when starting compiz? I can't reproduce this problem
here from Gnome. Can you try without KDE?

Does it help if you install gnome-themes or gtk2-engines? compiz-gtk
suggests gnome-themes, might be the reason.

> also windows miss borders and cannot be moved/resized by this

Your window decorator didn't start properly. Running compiz --replace
again might help. Or maybe the above clearlooks theme is require by the
window decorator, and thus makes it fail to start.

Hi,

The copyright file in this package does not include
the location of the upstream sources, which is a violation of
http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-docs.html#s-copyrightfile
("the copyright file must say where the upstream sources (if any) were
obtained").

Julien Cristau told me that "the xfonts-* packages include a bunch of
different fonts from http://xorg.freedesktop.org/releases/individual/font/
I'll fix the copyright file, thanks for noticing." :)

Ok, then this is why gnome-themes is suggested by compiz-gtk then.
Unless you think this "suggests" should be changed into a "recommends",
there is no actual problem here, so I am closing this bug.

What if you start compiz from another environment, i.e. not from KDE but
from Gnome for instance?

I think I get these (harmless) warnings on ATI too. I guess Compiz uses
some GLX operations that could be accelerated (and thus faster) if the
above features were supported by the driver.

I should've written that I already fixed it half an hour ago, sorry for
that. It seems I needed to use the binary nvidia driver instead of the
'nv' one.

Do you mean the original bug is fixed when using nvidia-glx? No while
screen anymore?

The nv driver cannot make Compiz work since it doesn't provide 3D
acceleration and Compiz needs it.

Bug#425451: I did reply to your ping!

2007-07-24 Thread David

Thank you for your very kind reply. So, maybe you would like to forward the
bug 425882 to the latest version of the package?

Maybe your replied to me without keeping the bug in CC and I missed your
mail, sorry if this is the case.

Ok fine, as long as we still have this one open, we don't care about the
other being closed.

The version number of the package matters more here actually. You
reported against version 2:2.0.0-1, that's the same than
xserver-xorg-video-intel from our point of view, so it's far from
obsolete.

This is either a bug in the x86 emulator included in the X server, or a
bug in your vbios. In either case, it'd probably work if you didn't use
the vesa driver. Is there any particular reason you use it instead of
an appropriate driver for your video card?
