Thanks for that, I'm looking at dejavu now using xfontsel as well as xfd
and gfontview.

I'm not a font expert. Please excuse me, but I can't actually see any
problem. I understand you mean with the ascents, that the umlauts,
circumflexes, acutes, etc are all coming up to the same height, where
they should be different. And with the descents, the tails of y's, g's,
the cedillas, etc are dropping down to the same depth.

As far as I can see, all this is happening fine. The circumflex in ê
comes up higher than the umlaut in ë (by one pixel). The o in å is
higher still.

I measure the tail of y at 1mm, while the cedilla of ç only comes down
about 0.8mm.

Moreover I can't see any difference between iso8859-1 and iso10646-1.
In both cases the ascents and descents vary between letters.

I double checked they were indeed different between characters using
xmag.

Can you explain in more detail precisely how you're perceiving the
problem? Some screenshots might help.

Could you also tell us which versions you now have installed, including
xserver-xorg
xserver-xorg-core
xbase-clients
libxfont1
ttf-dejavu
and which kernel and architecture you have (uname -srvo), and the
versions of any other packages you think might be relevant to the bug?

Thanks, Drew.

I wish the free ATI drivers supported the ATI Technologies Inc M56P

I'm currently working around this problem by using the non-free

I didn't see this bug for some time now. After reporting it, I had
switched to the proprietary nvidia driver. With the update to x.org
arriving in testing, I had to switch back to nv, because the
current nvidia package doesn't work -- since then, I didn't see this
anymore.

Thanks for your work,

I can confirm that this is okay with xorg in etch (just tested a fresh
install from the official dvds under qemu). Please feel free to close

(Not sure about the package, please reassign the bug to the right one.)

Sometimes, just after I start X (with startx), the display is
incorrect:
  * Some icons have wrong colors (e.g. black instead of white).
  * Most text is not visible in my xterm's, in particular all the text
with a black background (which is the background of my xterm's).
Yellow text with a red background appeared as black text with a
red background. (I suppose that all text appeared in black and
only the background of the characters was OK, but I haven't tested
more deeply.)
However, the background image was OK.

The screenshot done with "import -window root" was correct (i.e. with
the right colors).

As this problem is not always reproducible, the solution is to restart X.

I've attached the corresponding log file. The log file when the display
is correct is the same, except that there isn't the last line

  FreeFontPath: FPE "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc" refcount is 2, should be 1;
fixing.

but I've tested only once and I don't know if this related.

Hi Joachim,

can you try adding 'Disable "dri"' in the Module section of xorg.conf,
see if that helps?

Thanks,

The newest xterm set the wrong permissions on tty:
ikki:~> ls -l `tty`

this should be:
crw--w--w- 1 klaus tty136, 9 2006-01-25 22:50 /dev/pts/9

/etc/default/devpts:
# GID of the `tty' group

(gid 5 is group tty

This wrong permissions are problematic with other tools.

Well, I upgraded to the experimental version, and then Option "NoDRI"
does work.

(administrator, Debian Bugs database)

--- Begin Message ---
Package: xbase

In main.c:Exit(), xterm has this bit of code:

| #ifndef AMOEBA
| close(term->screen.respond); /* close explicitly to avoid race with
slave side */
| #endif
| #ifdef ALLOWLOGGING
| if(term->screen.logging)
| CloseLog(&term->screen);
| #endif
|
| #ifndef AMOEBA
| if (!am_slave) {
| /* restore ownership of tty and pty */
| chown (ttydev, 0, 0);
| #if (!defined(__sgi) && !defined(__osf__))
| chown (ptydev, 0, 0);
| #endif
|
| /* restore modes of tty and pty */
| chmod (ttydev, 0666);
| #if (!defined(__sgi) && !defined(__osf__))
| chmod (ptydev, 0666);
| #endif
| }
| #endif /* AMOEBA */

The variable term->screen.respond contains the file descriptor for the
pty device that corresponds to the filename in ptydev. The variable
ttydev contains the filename of the tty device that corresponds to the
pty device.

Between the close(term->screen.respond) and the chown and chmod calls,
there is a window in which another process can open the now-freed pty,
set the appropriate ownership and permissions on the corresponding tty
device, and start using it. Then xterm comes along and sets the tty
to world readable and writeable :)

Exchanging the close and the chmod calls will close that window, but
open another. It will become possible for another process to jump in
and open the tty, then write to xterm's child process via that
descriptor.

I don't see a solution here. Please refer to bugs #7112 and #988 for
similarly thorny pseudotty problems.

In the meantime, you can use 'Disable "dri"' if you're running unstable, or
if you're running stable comment out the 'Load "dri"' line in the modules
section of your xorg.conf. hth in the meanwhile.

This is an upstream issue, I'll wager.

The root of my complaint is that the Unicode glyphs LEFT-POINTING ANGLE
BRACKET (U+2329) and RIGHT-POINTING ANGLE BRACKET (U+232A) don't render
when I size my xterms up to the "Large" font. This was brought to my
attention because GNU roff renders URLs between these glyphs in UTF-8
environments. (On a Debian system, an example of a manpage that uses the
.URL macro is "update-fonts-alias", but there are many others.)

At first I thought this was just an oversight in the 9x15 font, as those
glyphs render fine. So fired up gbdfed to have a look, intending to draw
my own glyphs and submit a patch.

Imagine my surprise when I found that the font does define glyphs there.
Next I thought, well, maybe the bounding box is wrong, or it's declared as
a normal-width character but is really double-width. Those guesses appear
to be wrong, too:

STARTCHAR angleleft
ENCODING 9001
SWIDTH 576 0
DWIDTH 9 0
BBX 9 15 0 -3
BITMAP

0400
0400
0800
0800
1000
1000
0800
0800
0400
0400

ENDCHAR
STARTCHAR angleright
ENCODING 9002
SWIDTH 576 0
DWIDTH 9 0
BBX 9 15 0 -3
BITMAP

1000

0800
0800
0400
0400
0800
0800
1000
1000

ENDCHAR

I'm not really clear on what SWIDTH and DWIDTH are, but they (and the
bounding box "BBOX") are the same as glyph 9000 (U+2328 "KEYBOARD"), which
renders fine.

So then I thought maybe it's a bug in xterm. After floundering a bit,
because konsole doesn't want to play with bitmap fonts and fails to
"install" them when its convoluted dialogs offer to, and gnome-terminal
wanted to install a few dozen megs of dependencies, including Epiphrany and
dvd+rw-tools (?!), I settled on rxvt-unicode-ml.

I was in for another surprise. urxvt displays the glyphs correctly -- but
then so does xterm, when I launch it manually! (Usually I just let the
session manager start all the xterms I use.) What's more, both urxvt and
xterm suddenly forget how to render U+2328 and U+232B ("ERASE TO THE
LEFT"), which my usual xterms that can't render angle brackets handle just
fine!

There is one difference between urxvt and xterm -- the angle bracket glyphs
I *do* get look right on urxvt, but xterm is showing me some ugly stuff
that reminds me of the semigraphics characters on the TRS-80 Model I.

I've worked with X for a long time but this has me stumped.

What on earth is going on?

Here's my $HOME/.Xresources; as you can see, I don't change XTerm's fonts:

Using the mouse is cumbersome, so I added these to my X resource
database:

XTerm*vt100.translations: #override \n\
CtrlF1:popup-menu(mainMenu) \n\
CtrlF2:popup-menu(vtMenu) \n\
CtrlF3:popup-menu(fontMenu) \n\
CtrlF4:popup-menu(tekMenu)

When I try to use one of the first three of these actions, XTerm
dies:

xterm: warning, error event received:
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 38 (X_QueryPointer)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 344
Current serial number in output stream: 344

With the fourth, it segfaults. Below is a backtrace. I don't have
debugging symbols installed (I see no xterm-dbg package), but if it
would be helpful, I'm willing to go to some effort to get you a better
backtrace.

I imagine that it doesn't make much sense to try popup-menu(tekMenu)
from the main window, so feel free to call me silly for trying, but
doing so did find a segfault.

Much love,

xterm loops infinitely when it is invoked as follows.

LANG=ja_JP.UTF-8 xterm -g 1x2 -e /bin/echo -e '\n\343\201\202'

-g 1x2 specifes the window witdh be single column.
\343\201\202 is "HIRAGANA LETTER A" which character has
double column. So the character is not displayable.

However the infinite loop is not best behavior for this
situation, I think.

Xterm-225-1, LANG=ru_RU.KOI8-R (cyrillic).

Cyrillic characters are substituted by hashes (#) on copy-and-paste.
Xterm 222-1etch2 works fine with cyrillic on the same system.

Symptoms:

1. "Copy" operation works on xterm-225: buffer can be successfully pasted
to any X application, except xterm-225.

2. If cyrillic is selected on xterm-225, and just after that operation
focus is switched to other xterm (by left-mouse-click), and then
back to original xterm-225, then buffer contents become paste-able
to xterm-225, but not to any other X application.

While playing around trying to understand how uxterm works, I
discovered the "selection" item in the "font" menu, and played with it
before realizing it was a generic xterm feature documented in the man
manpage.

When selecting random latin characters (eg. from the prompt, either in
plain xterm or uxterm), sometimes I get the selection apparently
turned to "black on black" (I am using "white on black" for nomal
text), but sometimes it just segfaults, gdb reporting:

(gdb) bt
#0 0xb7d0736c in XDrawImageString () from /usr/lib/libX11.so.6
#1 0x08076de0 in ?? ()
#2 0x0809a358 in ?? ()
#3 0x01a00013 in ?? ()
#4 0x in ?? ()

With uxterm it gets better when selecting CJK characters pasted from
another app (precisely, from firefox browsing
http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sh%C5%8Dgi, any string I tried,
eg. \u738b\u5c06): I get the following crash backtrace from xterm
itself (also note the final "Aborted\n" trunkating the output).

Bug#404450: debconf: configuring X from console makes the screen go blank

2007-06-18 Thread Kamaraju Kusumanchi

On 6/17/07, Brice Goglin <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

Hi,

Did you reproduce this problem regarding the screen going blank while
reconfigure xorg from a console recently? With latest Xorg packages? Do
you get the screen back later, for instance by switching back/to VT
again? Or do you need to reboot or relaunch the X server?

Hi

I am using this laptop as a production machine. So can't really
install packages from unstable to test it out as it might break other
stuff on the system and the downgrade of packages is not supported in
Debian. I hope someone else will be able to help you out there.

I am still able to reproduce this problem on Stable (Etch) though
(with all packages up to date). Atleast in Stable, when I do

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

from console, I have to reboot the machine as the screen goes
completely blank. I do not understand your comment about "by switching
back/to VT again". I am in the virtual terminal when the screen goes
blank. After that keys like ctrl-alt-f1, ctrl-alt-f2, ctrl-alt-f5 do
not seem to have any effect at all. I have to reboot the machine to
get the screen back.

PS:- I have sent this mail before. But I could not see it in the BTS.
So I am sending it again. Sorry if you received multiple copies.

When at install time, the user selects the "japanese" keyboard, the
configuration is made as follows:
  xserver-xorg/config/inputdevice/keyboard/options: jp106
  xserver-xorg/config/inputdevice/keyboard/model: pc105

Unless the model is set to jp106, the <},],」,む> key neer Enter doesn't
work as expected (works as a <|,¥,ー> key, which by the way, still
doesn't work as expected either, cf. bug #280579).

There is no explicit dependency between compiz 0.5 and libdecoration 0.5
(and we need to fix this). So, if you "just" tried to upgrade compiz,
you might still be running an old libdecoration. What does "dpkg -l |
libdecoration" say?

Probably it have to do with Xorg then the update-operation update also

Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

*** Please type your report below this line ***

Hello,
After a long period with a screensaver, when I would like to return to my
desktop, xorg consumes 50% or more of the cpu!!! I could move the mouse
and the
applications are not freeze, but I can't do anything other than
ctr/alt/f1 or del
to kill the Xorg processus. If I would like to start an application or
deploy a menu, I have

to restart the computer. I'm using kde desktop and I'm using the random
screensaver functionnality. I've xcreensaver installed.
I'have a nvidia card. I could use nv ou nvidia driver, the result is the
same.

Thanks.

Bug#429581: x11proto-scrnsaver-dev: mention mere headers in Description

2007-06-18 Thread Dan Jacobson
Package: x11proto-scrnsaver-dev
Version: 1.1.0.0-1
Severity: wishlist

Attempting to clean up my system with

for i in `deborphan --guess-dev`
do apt-cache show $i; apt-get --purge remove $i
done

I encounter the scary looking package Descriptions for packages like
this one, x11proto-scrnsaver-dev, wherein it is not mentioned at all
that they contain mere header files and can be removed without causing
one to not be able to e.g., start xdm tomorrow.

Compare this to kernel-headers etc. packages.

So all the x11proto-*-dev Descriptions should mention that they are
mere headers 'of little use to non-developer end users'.

Actually, this kind of problem is important or normal.

In fact i don't know, when it happens I've generally to kill Xorg (If I
could) or restart the computer, so?

desktop, xorg consumes 50% or more of the cpu!!! I could move the

Do you see an increased memory usage? Is the computer swapping or so?

I put my password to return to my desktop and I could see "Xorg 50%" on
my cpu applet but the computer isn't swapping.

to kill the Xorg processus. If I would like to start an application or
deploy a menu, I have
to restart the computer. I'm using kde desktop and I'm using the random
screensaver functionnality. I've xcreensaver installed.

Could you try to locate whether the type of screensaver has an impact?
For instance, does a plain black screensaver do the same? What about
3D/OpenGL?

In first I used the random screensaver. Then I tried the "blank
screensaver" only, but always the same problem.

I'have a nvidia card. I could use nv ou nvidia driver, the result is
the same.

Please switch back to the nv driver and send the whole output of
/usr/share/bug/xserver-xorg/script 3>&1
(it should have been automatically included by the reportbug tool).

Doing this right after the problem occured and before restarting a new X
session would be the best (in case smething appears in Xorg.0.log).

I switch back to NV since I have this problem. I'll launch this script
next time I have this problem (tomorrow sure!!!).

Thanks.

Does xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.6.192 currently in experimental help?

Does it help if you disable dri ? With xserver-xorg-core 1.3, 'Disable
"dri"' in the modules section should do the trick (See MODULE SECTION in

and gfontview.

Moreover I can't see any difference between iso8859-1 and iso10646-1.
In both cases the ascents and descents vary between letters.

I've attached two screenshots of Dejavu font in xdf window. Firstly,
the window size is different for encoding iso8859-1 and iso10646-1 (it
may indicate that font metrics differ). Moreover, I selected 'hyphen
char' in both windows and you can see that its dimensions is not the
same in iso8859-1 (width 6; left 1; right 5; accent 6; descent -4) and
iso 10646-1 (width 6; left 1; right 6; accent 18; descent 6). The
latter metrics look awful.

I double checked they were indeed different between characters using
xmag.

Can you explain in more detail precisely how you're perceiving the
problem? Some screenshots might help.

Another two screenshots contain text samples made by Dejavu and Arial
fonts. The upper sample is produced using 8-bit font encoding
(iso8859-1 for dejavu and koi8-r for arial - it contains some
cyrillic). The problem is that the samples look differently, which is
unacceptable in my view.

I've also attached magnified samples for which the differences are
highlighted by thing red strokes.
