Bug#418016: Recent security update of libx11-6 (1.0.3-7) made opera segfault

2007-04-06 Thread Peter Baumann
Package: libx11-6
Version: 2:1.0.3-7
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software

After upgrading libx11-6 to the security update as in version 1.0.3-7
made opera segfault every time I tried to start it. Downgrading to
version 1.0.3-6 fixes it.

Yes, I know that opera isn't open source, but I marked this bug critical
because if the patch for the security fix causes opera to segfault,
something looks _fishy_ with this patch and could propably cause other
applications to break, too. But feel free to downgrade the severity of
this bug, if you think the problem is inside opera.

I will probably fill a bugreport for opera, too, which includes a link
to this bugreport.

xorg override disparity

2007-04-06 Thread Debian Installer
There are disparities between your recently accepted upload and the
override file for the following file(s):

xlibmesa-dri_7.1.0-18_all.deb: package says section is libs, override says x11.
xlibs-static-dev_7.1.0-18_all.deb: package says section is libs, override says

the override is correct and the package wrong please fix the package

override is incorrect then please reply to this mail and explain why.

Yes, it has already been reported on the Debian/Gentoo/Opera/Xorg BTS. But I
don't think anybody posted an interesting backtrace yet, so it's kind of
hard to know what's going on.

Package: libx11-6

Upgrading to 1.0.3-7 brakes other software - causing segfaults in
XPutImage call, rdesktop is affected and unusable.
This seems to happen on machine with direct rendering disabled, the
same setup on accelerated Xorg works fine.

Hi,

could you install libx11-6-dbg and get a backtrace with gdb from a

Backtrace won't be very interesting without an unstripped binary.

So this gets you closer to the point of the failure, but still needs
unstripped opera source to make any progress on from this angle.

Revert "Build xserver-xorg-core-dbg."

This reverts commit 566bda1629188c083f71ca34fada16416aa45511.

I don't want 1.3 RC5 to wait in NEW, so revert the -dbg package for now.

Bug#418016: Recent security update of libx11-6 (1.0.3-7) made opera segfault

2007-04-06 Thread Steve Langasek
On Fri, Apr 06, 2007 at 12:07:36PM +0200, Brice Goglin wrote:

> Yes, it has already been reported on the Debian/Gentoo/Opera/Xorg BTS. But I

FWIW, this is the bit of the patch to XCreateImage which causes the problem:

+  } else if (image_bytes_per_line < min_bytes_per_line) {
+  return 0;

Seems pretty clear to me that Opera has *a* bug, since the failure here is
caused by XCreateImage returning a null image due to bad arguments, and
Opera failing to check the return value before dereferencing it.

FWIW, if I change this 'return 0' to a 'sleep(20)' and attach to the
process, I get the following backtrace:

#0 0xf752f03b in nanosleep () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#1 0xf752ee8e in sleep () from /lib/tls/libc.so.6
#2 0xf76764ae in XCreateImage () from /usr/lib/libX11.so.6
#3 0x0865efee in ?? ()
#4 0x08a2f380 in ?? ()
#5 0x08a33f70 in ?? ()
#6 0x0018 in ?? ()
#7 0x0002 in ?? ()
#8 0x in ?? ()

could be useful to Opera if someone wants to pass this along. This is with
opera_9.10-20061214.6-shared-qt_en_i386.deb for Debian testing.

FWIW, the problematic invocation has an 'image_bytes_per_line' value of '3'
and a 'width' value of '1', but the bits-per-pixel for the display is 32
(i.e., 4 bytes), so the check fails. I guess Opera is wrongly assuming that
a bitdepth of 24 gives a bpp of 24, not 32?

Bug#418021: Bug #418021

2007-04-06 Thread ldoolitt
eyck -

As the author of the patch that apparently broke your application,
this report totally baffles me. Can you confirm that downgrading
to libx11-6 version 2:1.0.3-6 removes the problem?

Are you able to patch and rebuild test versions of libx11?
If so, one quick thing to try is to put back the
|| image_bytes_per_line < 0
snippet on lines 336 and 405; the first of those will avoid leaking
memory in previously detectable erroneous image_bytes_per_line.

It would also be interesting to put a fprintf(stderr,"libx11-debug:
%d", image_bytes_per_line, min_bytes_per_line); right before lines 378
and 422, assuming the message goes someplace where you can see it.
Or you could set a breakpoint on those lines with gdb, and print out
those variables (assuming they're not optimized away).

Can you give instructions for me to reproduce this bug on my machine?
Preferably without needing an account on an NT/2000 remote.

- Larry

C.f. http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=418016;msg=24 for a
crash in another application related to this change. That one may reduce to
a bogus assumption about bpp vs. bit depth.

Bug#414792: cvt not packaged.

2007-04-06 Thread Luc Verhaegen
Is it really that much trouble? That much excess?

Like most people, i'm a sporadic user of this program, and i tend to get
pretty miffed when what should be an institution is plainly MIA.

Luc Verhaegen.
Miffed author too.
