Bug#224353: /usr/X11R6/bin/xclock: xclock man page and options deficiencies

2003-12-18 Thread Tim Connors
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.3.0-0pre1v4
Severity: normal
File: /usr/X11R6/bin/xclock

xclock --help shows there is a -face argument

The man page does not include -face, so I have little idea how to use
it (similarly, the options -sharp/-render are not in the man page)

Supplyng -face "Times New Roman" etc seems to work. There
unfortunately seems not to be an asscoiated font size argument, as in
the -fa and -fs args to xterm, so the text is way too big on my
machine.

man page also includes the font resource, but an entry of
XClock.clock.font: -*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*
seems to do nothing. Nor does the -fn option explained in the --help:
xclock -fn '-*-helvetica-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*'

The NEWS.Debian file for xfree86 explains how people are migrated to the
new conffile-like mechanism:

xfree86 (4.2.1-11) unstable; urgency=medium

  * The following configuration files use a new, MD5-checksum-based method of
management:
- /etc/X11/X
- /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
- /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

This new method attempts to detect changes to these files, and if they are
modified by the user, the files will be ignored by the packaging system
henceforth. The debconf region markers (e.g. "### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION")
formerly used in Xwrapper.config and XF86Config-4 are no longer used, are
disregarded if present, and will not be newly written.

The debconf templates in the xserver-common, xserver-xfree86, and
xserver-xfree86-dbg packages (the latter shares all of its templates with
xserver-xfree86) having to do with whether or not files on the disk should
be overwritten have been removed, and are unregistered in the new
packages' pre-installation scripts.

In the event that you have customized these configuration files, and have
neglected both to correct debconf's notion of whether it should manage
those files, and (in the case of Xwrapper.config and XF86Config-4) have
not removed the "debconf region markers" before upgrading to xfree86
4.2.1-10 or later, backups are made and stored in the same directory, with
the suffix ".dpkg-old".

See the Debian X FAQ at or in
the file /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz after this upgrade is
complete for more information on the Debian XFree86 packages' new method
of handling these configuration files.

   * Change maintainer scripts to never use safe_debconf() with db_get or
db_metaget. Instead, check the exit status of these commands normally
with an if statement and only take the appropriate actions if the command
succeeds. For extra paranoia (in the event code is changed to live inside
a loop in the future), clear variables we'll be filling with db_get or
db_metaget output before using them. (Closes: #217605)

The file programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/os-support/linux/lnx_video.c requires
some checks for ARM to prevent it trying to execute code only for x86.
This is consistent with other non-x86 platforms. This patch was made
against 4.3 experimental sources, but is just as relevant to 4.1 in
woody and 4.2 in unstable.

I'm not sure how far I'll get with this one, but I'm trying to make it
so that if you pick a language off gdm's menu (assuming yours is
listed), it will actually work. In this process, I have found that
glibc's /etc/locale.alias formats charsets like ISO-8859-1, but X's
locale.alias doesn't map this format to X's. This results in some
fairly evil breakage within your X session.

A little perl magic from someone on #debian-devel reveals the following
locales are listed in /etc/locale.alias, but not in X's:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ perl -lane '/^\#/ && next;$k{$F[1]}.=$ARGV;END{$k{$_}
eq "/etc/locale.alias" and print for (sort keys %k);}'

Hopefully this list will help you update X's locale.alias sooner rather
than after certain packages have frozen. =)

Subject: xbase-clients: preinst script truncates error string on line 311
Package: xbase-clients
Version: 4.2.1-13
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

This bug concerns the preinstallation script for
base-clients_4.2.1-13_i386.deb.

The DEBIAN/preinst script trashes the error string on line 311, preventing the
user from knowing what made the script fail (in my case, building the plain
vanilla official XFree86 4.3.0 sources and installing them upsets the debs
using slightly different symlink setups).

Line 310 will report the important info needed to fix the problem:
errmsg="$symlink exists and is not a symbolic link; this package cannot"
But on line 311 it's truncated:
  errmsg="be installed until this"

A small mistake but it caused me much frustration! Obviously it is supposed to
be:
  errmsg="$errmsg be installed until this"

Here's a bash session excerpt of the problem I am describing:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/X11R6/lib/X11# ln -sf /etc/X11/xinit/ .
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/X11R6/lib/X11# dpkg -i
/var/cache/apt/archives/xbase-clients_4.2.1-13_i386.deb
(Reading database ... 178082 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace xbase-clients 4.2.1-11 (using
.../xbase-clients_4.2.1-13_i386.deb) ...
xbase-clients preinst error: be installed until this file is removed
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/xbase-clients_4.2.1-13_i386.deb
(--install):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 74
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/xbase-clients_4.2.1-13_i386.deb
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/usr/X11R6/lib/X11#

And here's output of the same package rebuilt with the fix I have proposed:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp# dpkg -i xbase.deb
(Reading database ... 179640 files and directories currently installed.)
Preparing to replace xbase-clients 4.2.1-11 (using xbase.deb) ...
xbase-clients preinst error: /etc/X11/xkb/xkbcomp exists and is not a
symbolic
link; this package cannot be installed until this file is removed
dpkg: error processing xbase.deb (--install):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 74
Errors were encountered while processing:
 xbase.deb
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/tmp#

So, it turns out I had an actual binary of xkbcomp (probably thanks to "make
install"
of the official X sources; I had no choice as the Debian pkgs were not playing
nice
with my via KT400/Radion 9000 - putting my monitor to sleep and X sitting
there eating
99% CPU forcing me to ssh in and reboot) instead of a symlink to it.

So.. My first Debian bug report? A patch is at the end but I only put it there
so I could add the "patch" tag, I'm sure it'd be eaiser for you guys to dive
into the file with vim..

Package: xfonts-base
Version: 4.2.1-14

G'Day!

The file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/microsoft-win3.1.enc is
missing from the xfonts-base package. This encoding is referenced in
the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/encodings/encodings.dir.

I guess this oversight has not been noticed until now because no-one
has had a need to use this encoding! :-) I have no idea when it was
deleted (if it was ever included), either...

I am sure that you already know you can grab the relevant file from the
XFree86.org CVS, in the xc/fonts/encodings directory.

Yours truly,

John Zaitseff

Package: xdm
Version: 4.2.1-14

The file

/var/lib/dpkg/info/xdm.config

in this package contains the command "head -n -1", which is invalid.
This causes an error on package installation. It should probably be
"head -n 1".

Yes it does. However, according to the principle of least surprise, could the
reconfiguration script avoid asking debconf questions about values which it
will not update due to the missing md5sum?
