[The following is a form letter.]

Hello,

You recently filed a duplicate bug report against Debian's XFree86
packages; that is, the problem had already been reported.

While there is often nothing inherently wrong with doing so, the filing of
duplicate reports can cause Debian package maintainers to spend time
performing triage and maintenance operations on bug reports (e.g.,
instructing the Debian Bug Tracking System to merge the duplicates) that
could otherwise be spent resolving problems and doing other work on the
package.

One very good way to file bugs with the Debian Bug Tracking System is to
use the "reportbug" package and command of the same name. A very nice
feature of reportbug is that, if the machine where you run it has network
access to the World Wide Web, it can query the Debian Bug Tracking System
and show you existing reports. This reduces the chance that you'll file a
duplicate report, and offers you the option of adding follow-up information
to an existing bug report. This is especially valuable if you have unique
information to add to an existing report, because this way information
relevant to the problem is gathered together in one place as opposed to
being scattered among multiple, duplicate bug reports where some facts may
be overlooked by the package maintainers. The reportbug program also does
a lot of automatic information-gathering that helps package maintainers to
understand your system configuration, and also ensures that your message to
the Debian Bug Tracking System is well-formed so that it is processed
correctly by the automated tools that manage the reports. (If you've ever
gotten a "bounce" message from the Debian Bug Tracking System that tells
you your message couldn't be processed, you might appreciate this latter
feature.)

Therefore, I strongly urge you to give "reportbug" a try as your primary
bug reporting tool for the Debian System.

One way to install reportbug is with "apt-get"; for
example:

  # apt-get install reportbug

The "reportbug" command has a few different modes that cater to different
levels of user expertise. If this message has contained a lot of jargon
that is unfamiliar to you, you likely want to use reportbug's "novice"
mode; here's one way to do that.

  $ reportbug --mode=novice
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version
of Debian ("stable"), but instead Debian "testing" or "unstable", you
should use reportbug's standard mode.

  $ reportbug
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and
manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are:

  $ reportbug --help | more
  $ man reportbug

(The output of the above commands has been omitted from this message.)

Thanks for using the Debian system!

How does that matter? AFAIK the X server switches to software cursor
automatically if the driver can't support the current cursor in
hardware. OTOH a software cursor mixes really badly with Xv and the DRI.

Have you verified that Q3A isn't picking up a different libGL? Either
way, you may want to post about this to the dri-devel and/or mesa3d-dev

Yea, you mentioned this to me on IRC yesterday afternoon, and last night I
checked and sure enough, there was a libGL.so symlink in the q3 directory,
pointing to libMesaMatroxGL.so. I pointed it to /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 and the
crashes stopped.

Thanks,

Cool.

The server should handle this more gracefully though, if it still
happens with xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk from

deb http://people.debian.org/~daenzer/dri-trunk-sid/./

please post your findings to the dri-devel list.

Hi Branden/X people,

Attached you'll find a patch which will update Brazilian Portuguese
(pt_BR) debconf template translation. It's based on recent changes
introduced in Debian packages version 4.2.1-10.

Please apply the patch before releasing the next X packages revision.

Changes:
 xfree86 (4.3.0-0pre1v1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   * new upstream release
 - XFree86 X server now supports ATI Radeon Mobility (Closes: #196810)
 - XFree86 X server now supports SiS 740 chipset (Closes: #196912)
 - XTerm allows window title reporting, disabled by default, to be enabled
at the user's option via the allowWindowOps X resource (Closes: #200857)
 .
   * Some things changed. This release would not have been possible without
the assistance of Daniel Stone (sponsored by Trinity College, Melbourne
Uni) and ISHIKAWA Mutsumi. A proper changelog entry for this release may
not be possible even if God Himself grabbed my keyboard away from me.
 .
   * converted package build process to use packaged version of DBS, courtesy
 of Warren Turkal
 - debian/control: build-depend on dbs
 - debian/rules: use DBS
 - debian/scripts/vars: DBS knows where the stampdir is
 - debian/setperms: no longer need to enforce permissions on local version of
 DBS
 - debian/{doogie-build-system,scripts/{fix.source.patch,patch.apply,

   * debian/rules: stop calling debconf2po-update, per Denis Barbier
 (Closes: #172579)
 .
   * remove special-case logic in linux.cf that defined "HasLinuxInput" to
 "NO" for Mc68020Architecture:
 - m68k is now supported by the Linux 2.4.20 kernel (at least in
Debian), so we let this symbol be defined to "YES" just like all the
other architectures. This only really affects the Wacom input driver
and should not cause any regressions. (thanks to James Troup for

Hi Branden/X people,

Attached you'll find a patch which will update Brazilian Portuguese
(pt_BR) debconf template translation. It's based on recent changes
introduced in Debian packages version 4.2.1-10.

Please apply the patch before releasing the next X packages revision.

4.3.0-0pre1v1 Sig11 crash with Radeon 7500/Quake3

2003-08-29 Thread Brian Almeida
[Please CC me as I am not subscribed to debian-x]

Hi,

I was playing around with the 4.3.0-0pre1v1 debs from experimental last
night, and after upgrading and compiling/installing the new dri kernel modules
from xlibmesa-drm-src, quake3 1.32b reliably crashes X with a signal 11.
DRI was enabled (verified by glxinfo) and glxgears works fine in the same
setup. The radeon module I was using for my 7500 was v1.7.0.
[drm] AGP 0.99 aperture @ 0xf800 64MB
[drm] Initialized radeon 1.7.0 20020828 on minor 0

Is anyone else experiencing these symptoms?

My XF86Config-4 file can be found at http://tynian.net/XF86Config-4

Here's the output from /var/log/XFree86.0.log:

Cool.

The server should handle this more gracefully though, if it still
happens with xserver-xfree86-dri-trunk from

deb http://people.debian.org/~daenzer/dri-trunk-sid/./

please post your findings to the dri-devel list.

While purging this package, the postrm simply hangs while purging the
configuration files. ps shows a grep in the postrm command is waiting for input
from stdin.

The postrm is missing the conffile argument to grep, which should be fixed by
the following patch:

Actually, I'd like to retract my previous mail about this.

-n does buy me one more thing. It evaluates to false if the file
exists, is not empty, but contains nothing but whitespace. I like that.
This way the right thing happens if at some point the user edited the
roster file and added a bunch of blank lines to it. This is common with
non-anal-retentive text editors and/or users.

In general principle, though, yes -- -s is the right alternative to the
above approach.

It's an easy enough option to support, and as I understand it, the new
cursor extensions that Keith Packard has authored may make more people
want to use software cursors, so at this point I'm leaning towards
having it as a low-priority question. The logic for supporting it is
not complex, which helps.

I think you underestimate how widely ATI Rage 128-based video chipsets
are used.

I forget many things (mainly due to mental bit rot), but I certainly
have not forgotten be accused by you of breaching my duties to the
Project and to our users for refusing to become a mindless servant of
your will with respect to a bug that irritated you.

I am perfectly willing to forgive such a thing, if you're willing to
acknowledge that it was an instance of bad judgement, and to refrain
from doing it in the future.

But as far as I can tell you continue to feel completely justified in
your past and present accusations. It makes no sense to absolve someone
of an action that they don't feel is sinful, to use a religious metaphor.

I generally don't forget about attacks upon my character. If you think
it's childish of me not to respond to assaults on my integrity, then I
guess I'll have to accept whatever epithet it is you're dishing out
here.

Whether we can work together has much more to do with you than it does
me.

Whether we can work together has much more to do with you than it does
me. You'll get acknowledgement for your contributions irrespective of
the shrillness of your personal criticisms of me. See, for example, the
changelog entry of xfree86 4.2.1-10.

That's my idea of professionalism. Your mileage may vary.

Bug#207638: xserver-common 4.2.1-10 won't install sanely on clean system

2003-08-29 Thread Branden Robinson
reassign 207638 xserver-common,xfree86
severity 207638 important
merge 206790 207638
thanks

  $ reportbug --mode=novice
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

If you're more sophisticated, or if you are not using the released version
of Debian ("stable"), but instead Debian "testing" or "unstable", you
should use reportbug's standard mode.

  $ reportbug
Please enter the name of the package in which you have found a problem,
or type 'other' to report a more general problem.
  >

The reportbug command is extensively documented in its usage message and
manual page. Commands to view these pieces of documentation are:

  $ reportbug --help | more
  $ man reportbug

(The output of the above commands has been omitted from this message.)

Thanks for using the Debian system!

Okay. Thanks for the corrections.

 xfree86 (4.3.0-0pre1v1) experimental; urgency=low
 .
   * new upstream release
 - debian/scripts/vars: DBS knows where the stampdir is
 - debian/setperms: no longer need to enforce permissions on local version
of
 DBS

   * remove special-case logic in linux.cf that defined "HasLinuxInput" to
 "NO" for Mc68020Architecture:
 - m68k is now supported by the Linux 2.4.20 kernel (at least in
Debian), so we let this symbol be defined to "YES" just like all the
other architectures. This only really affects the Wacom input driver
and should not cause any regressions. (thanks to James Troup for

In the recently modified template about "niceness" of the server, there is a
typo :

"it has been widely notes" instead of "it has been widely noted", I guess

If you plan the modification, please send me the new templates.pot file. I'm
currently working on updating the french translation and wouldn't like to
see my translationfuzzied just because of this..:-)

Duraid already reported this to debian-x, but it needs a bug filed
so we don't release Sarge without fixing it.

When typing startx, the server spews tons of:

Elf_RelocateEntry() Unsupported relocation type 135
Elf_RelocateEntry() Unsupported relocation type 134

Duraid said that a self-compiled X 4.3.99 did not have this problem
and DanielS commented that some module loader changes needed backporting
from head.

Bug#207832: xserver-xfree86: autoconfiguration like knoppix

Subject: xserver-xfree86: autoconfiguration like knoppix
Package: xserver-xfree86
Version: 4.2.1-10
Severity: wishlist
Tags: sid

it would be very nice, if ther would be an autoconfiguration like knoppix does
it. i think many of
the problem reports would disappear by itself then.

mostly it is not absoluteley necessary to tune your x-server to your specific
hardware, it is
sufficient to get it working with clear fonts, and the correct res
olution.

Hello,

Attached is the pt_BR.UTF-8 directory for /usr/lib/X11/locale.
Unfortunately I could not find what package provides it, so I
am filling the bug on xserver-common, please reasign at will.

This fixes some problems with us_intl keyboards when using
pt_BR, like ' + c generating an accented c instead of ç and
" not working (generating diaresis, instead).

Would you please send this stuff upstream?

Thanks!

Namely, in xfree86 4.2.1-11.

Hello,

You recently filed a duplicate bug report against Debian's XFree86
packages; that is, the problem had already been reported.

While there is often nothing inherently wrong with doing so, the filing of
duplicate reports can cause Debian package mainta

Version: 4.2.1-9
Severity: normal

Hello, I'm using sid and sometimes the keyboard doen't work when X start
(you press any key but nothing ocurrs). It's solved if I restart the X
server.

That is, normally X work fine, but rarely, when I start the X server,
keyboard doesn't work at all. If I restart the X server (using the
mouse), keyboard works again.

Sometime ago I also installed sid and keyboard didn't work every time I
started the X server for first time. If I restarted the server it worked
fine.

But this is another clean installation.

I also have woody installed in the same computer and I have never had
this problem in woody.

Subject: I have removed my XF86Config-4 file and am configuring xserver-xfree86
to
 write a new one,
but it wont let me because there is no MD5 checksum available. I want to to
overwrite the old file or create a new one,
but it wont let me. So I am stuck making an XF86Config file by hand which I
can never modify using debconfig. How can I force it to write a new one. I
have even purged the package and reinstalled it.

I was installing X on a new laptop and went from a testing version of

The postinst script errored reporting that the file does not exist. A
quick check showed that /var/lib/xfree86 does not exist.

Hi,

despite your comments in debian/rules and debian/changelog, I am pretty
sure that running debconf2po-update in debian/rules is meaningless.
You might want to call it in order to update PO files, but
xserver-xfree86-dbg has nothing to do with it. Here is a patch.
If you find some behaviour changes, please let me know.

Denis

Hello !

I have just upgraded the X server to the latest version and my XF86Config-4
was overwritten even if it was not managed by debconf (in previous upgrade,
I was asked if this file has to be overwritten by a new one or not): there
is no debconf line at the beginning or at the end of the file.

>From my understanding of the message which was at the top of the file,
deleting the entire debconf stuff should prevent the file to be altered and
this was the case until the transition to dexconf.

Hash: SHA1

Package: xserver-common
Version: 4.2.1-10

When installing xserver first time on fresh system I get following error=20
message:

Setting up xserver-common (4.2.1-10) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/xserver-common.postinst: line 263:=20
/var/lib/xfree86/Xwrapper.config.roster: No such file or directory
dpkg:error poocessing xserver-common (--configure): subprocess=20
post-installation script returned error exit status 1

everything else X related has installed fine but xserver-common (failed=20
config) and xserver-xfree86 (not configured)

If I remember right xserver-common (4.2.1-9) installed fine this way

System information:

Debian GNU/Linux Sid with kernel 2.4.20-bf2.4 i686

Thanks,=20
