xfree86 4.3.0-pre1v1 sources ?
Hello, Is there somewhere the 4.3.0-pre1v1 source package are available while they are waiting in the new queue ? I wish to build them, and try to work on providing the driver SDK this weekend. I tried building the today nightly snapshots, but they failed with the hunk 1 of the 003_linux.cf_and_xfree86.cf.diff patch. It failed in linux.cf, because the upstream tarball seem to have a : #if LinuxDistribution == LinuxDebian # define SystemManDirectory /usr/share/man # define CppCmd cpp-3.2 # define HasPam YES # define HasTk YES # define TkLibDir /usr/lib # define TkIncDir /usr/include # define TkLibName tk8.3 # define XF86SetupUsesStaticTk NO # define HasTcl YES # define TclLibDir /usr/lib # define TclIncDir /usr/include # define TclLibName tcl8.3 # define XF86SetupUsesStaticTcl NO /* un-comment this when it is un-broken */ /* # define JoystickSupport YES */ The : # define CppCmd cpp-3.2 Not being found in the patch. I suppose we want to build with cpp-3.3 also, right ? I will try to fix this, and provide a corrected patch, and see if it fails further down. BTW, what is the prefered way of handling this kind of stuff ? Using debian-x, mail to Branden directly, or perhaps to the X task force ? Bug#183300: Savage 3D same problem
I am in sarge, with a s3 savage 3d card. I have the same flicker problem with debian package. I found out that XFree86 4.3.0 official (unpatched) binaries, which include savage driver version 1.1.20 work well. I can even start X with Debian driver (flickering), then change savage_drv.o from debian to Xfree's one, then start another X session in :1, then kill the session in :1, restore original savage_drv.o, then switch to :0 and the flickering disappears completely. From now until i reboot the machine there will be no flicker, even if i restart X debian version again. I also have problems with debian driver when trying to set up 16-bit mode (the monitor complais about extreme high frequency 160Hz, but XF86Config-4 should prevent it to go avobe 90 Hz). -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". I don't promise any results, but can you try adding the following to the "Modules" Section of your XF86Config-4? Set LC_ALL=C in your environment when building, and file a bug on the dbs package. It needs to ensure that LC_COLLATE is sane before applying patches. I reject your patch, as it will cause build failures in environments where LC_COLLATE is not set to "mumbo_JUMBO". -- G. ([ -f "$i" ] || [ -d "$i" ]); then This still seems incomplete, though. What if it's a symlink to a device node? We could simply do this instead to test whether the symlink is truly dangling: - if [ ! -f "$i" ]; then + if [ ! -e "$i" ]; then XFree86 might not be able to do this if they want to run on Solaris, whose /bin/sh doesn't understand test -e, but it's fine on any POSIX system. Somebody might want to make sure that other shells return the same result from test -e on a dangling symlink, but my reading of http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/007904975/utilities/test.html is that any shell that doesn't is buggy. Bug#204603: xserver-xfree86: Crashes with signal 11 after Woody->Sarge upgrade
Package: xserver-xfree86 Version: 4.2.1-6 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable Yesterday i upgraded from Woody to Sarge, and since then I havent been able to start my xserver. It crashes with a signal 11. I used the upgrade procedure described in the debian manual, but about 500 packages were held back, so I used apt-get install/upgrade/dist-upgrade randomly. (I may have put the wrong numbers in my preferences file) Perhaps my problem is caused by the fact that before the update I did not have a file names /etc/X11/XF86Config-4. Instead I used a file named /etc/X11/XFreeConfig. This worked fine in Woody, but it may have confused the update script. I have put my prior version of XF86Config at the end of this report (after all the other files) -- Package-specific info: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] (rev b2) 01:00.0 Class 0300: 10de:0110 (rev b2) ### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION # XF86Config-4 (XFree86 server configuration file) generated by dexconf, the # Debian X Configuration tool, using values from the debconf database. # # Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page. # (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.) # # If you want your changes to this file preserved by dexconf, only make changes # before the "### BEGIN DEBCONF SECTION" line above, and/or after the # "### END DEBCONF SECTION" line below. # # To change things within the debconf section, run the command: # dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 # as root. Set LC_ALL=C in your environment when building, and file a bug on the dbs package. It needs to ensure that LC_COLLATE is sane before applying patches. Re: server crash report
[The following is a form letter.] Hello, You recently sent an off-charter message to the debian-x mailing list. First, I will offer an explanation of what this mailing list's purpose is; I will then suggest some alternative forums for your message or concern. The full charter of the mailing list follows. This list is for the discussion and support of the X Window System within Debian. Issues of maintenance and porting of Debian's XFree86 packages are germane here, as are discussions of possible Debian policy mechanisms for ensuring the smooth interoperation of packages that use the X Window System, particularly widget sets, desktop environments, window managers, display managers, and packages that provide fonts for the X Window System. In particular, individuals involved with building official Debian XFree86 packages for any architecture are invited to join, as are those with various graphics hardware who seek to reproduce and/or fix bugs in the X server. This is not a user support list; this list is intended for those who deal with the source code of any of the X Window System components mentioned above. If you are experiencing a problem, the first thing to check is the Debian X FAQ. This FAQ is available on the World Wide Web: http://people.debian.org/~branden/xsf/FAQ The FAQ is also available on any Debian system that has the "xfree86-common" package installed. You can use the command "dpkg --status xfree86-common" at a shell prompt to determine whether you have the xfree86-common package installed (this technique works with any other package name as well). For instance, when I run this command I see the following: $ dpkg --status xfree86-common Package: xfree86-common Status: install ok installed (followed by additional information about the package) If xfree86-common is installed, you can view the Debian X FAQ in a variety of ways, since it is a gzipped (compressed) text file. The path to the FAQ is /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz. Here's one method for viewing it: $ zmore /usr/share/doc/xfree86-common/FAQ.gz Debian X Window System Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) List Copyright 1998-2002 Branden Robinson. This document is licensed under the GNU General Public License, version 2 (see /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL). By its nature, this document is not complete. If your question is not answered here, try /usr/share/doc//README.Debian (and other files in the package's doc directory), manual pages, and the debian-user mailing list. See http://www.debian.org/ for more information about the Debian mailing lists. (followed by the rest of the FAQ) If the FAQ does not satisfactorily answer your question, the primary Debian users' support forum is the debian-user mailing list. You can learn more about this list at: http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/ If you have already tried that mailing list, and/or your machine does *NOT* use an Intel-x86 compatible CPU (such as a Pentium or AMD Athlon chip), you may also want to peruse one of Debian's architecture-specific mailing lists: http://lists.debian.org/debian-alpha/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-arm/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-hppa/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-ia64/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-m68k/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-mips/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-powerpc/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-sparc/ http://lists.debian.org/debian-superh/ Before sending a message to one of the mailing lists, it's wise to try using the search interface; in many cases, your problem has been experienced before by other people, and a solution, workaround, or explanation may already be available! http://lists.debian.org/search.html If the search engine turns up nothing, you should know whether or not you're subscribed to a mailing list before sending a message to it. If you are not subscribed, make *certain* that you ask for private copies of replies to your message. Debian's standard practice is to reply only to mailing lists (this cuts down on Internet traffic and annoying bounce messages). If you want people to deviate from this standard practice you should ask them to do so. (Advanced mail users should set a Mail-Followup-To header that includes both the list address and their own address.) Finally, if you have found a problem in Debian's XFree86 packages (and especially if Debian experts on one or more of the above mailing lists agree), you should file a bug report with the Debian Bug Tracking System. One of the best ways to do this is with the "reportbug" package and command of the same name. One way to install reportbug is with "apt-get"; for example: # apt-get install reportbug The "reportbug" command has a few different modes that cater to different levels of user expertise. If this message has contained a lot of jargon that is unfamiliar to you, you likely want to use reportbug's "novice" mode; here's one way to do that. $ reportbu

I could be mistaken, but I think xmodmap goes way back to before there were XINPUT and XKEYBOARD extensions. In other words, so far back that the only input devices supported by the X Window System Sample Implementation *were* the core pointer and core keyboard. If I'm right, that would be why. [mga][ds4] xmodmap not working anymore ?
When trying to insert my personal modmap, I stumbled on the following problem (xfree 4.3 from ds4): X suddenly took 100% of CPU (even tough top indicated only 50%), and after a while the computer became totally non-reactive (for a while, the server kept on moving the mouse). I am competent enough to turn my xmodmap into a xkb file (which I did, and I have now even more ideas of stupid keyboard customization), but people will have trouble with that. Is it a known bug ? Btw, where should bugs for ds4 or (soon) experimental be filed (I think there is no experimental tag in the BTS)? Sincerly, -- JCD

[mga][ds4] xfs makes Xfree segfault (reproducible)
When I launch galeon, if I have xfs first in my fontpath, Xfree just restarts (thanks to gdm -- with startx, it just stops). adobe-helvetica-iso8859-1 is the font used on my start page. Shoud I investigate this some more ? Btw the antialiasing is terrible with some fonts. Did anything special change, what could I be looking at ? xdpyinfo: name of display::0.0 version number:11.0 vendor string:The XFree86 Project, Inc vendor release number:4030 XFree86 version: 4.3.0 maximum request size: 4194300 bytes motion buffer size: 256 bitmap unit, bit order, padding:32, LSBFirst, 32 image byte order:LSBFirst number of supported pixmap formats:7 supported pixmap formats: depth 1, bits_per_pixel 1, scanline_pad 32 depth 4, bits_per_pixel 8, scanline_pad 32 depth 8, bits_per_pixel 8, scanline_pad 32 depth 15, bits_per_pixel 16, scanline_pad 32 depth 16, bits_per_pixel 16, scanline_pad 32 depth 24, bits_per_pixel 32, scanline_pad 32 depth 32, bits_per_pixel 32, scanline_pad 32 keycode range:minimum 8, maximum 255 focus: window 0x16000d1, revert to Parent number of extensions:30 BIG-REQUESTS DOUBLE-BUFFER DPMS Extended-Visual-Information FontCache GLX LBX MIT-SCREEN-SAVER MIT-SHM MIT-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD RANDR RECORD RENDER SECURITY SGI-GLX SHAPE SYNC TOG-CUP X-Resource XC-APPGROUP XC-MISC XFree86-Bigfont XFree86-DGA XFree86-DRI XFree86-Misc XFree86-VidModeExtension XInputExtension XKEYBOARD XTEST XVideo default screen number:0 number of screens:1 screen #0: dimensions:1600x1200 pixels (411x311 millimeters) resolution:99x98 dots per inch depths (7):24, 1, 4, 8, 15, 16, 32 root window id:0x48 depth of root window:24 planes number of colormaps:minimum 1, maximum 1 default colormap:0x20 default number of colormap cells:256 preallocated pixels:black 0, white 16777215 options:backing-store NO, save-unders NO largest cursor:64x64 current input event mask:0x5a20bd KeyPressMask ButtonPressMask ButtonReleaseMask EnterWindowMask LeaveWindowMask PointerMotionHintMask ButtonMotionMask StructureNotifyMask SubstructureNotifyMask SubstructureRedirectMask PropertyChangeMask number of visuals:16 default visual id: 0x23 visual: visual id:0x23 class:TrueColor depth:24 planes available colormap entries:256 per subfield red, green, blue masks:0xff, 0xff00, 0xff significant bits in color specification:8 bits (other visuals) XF86Config (when not buggy): Section "Files" #if not a comment, bug: FontPath"unix/:7100" # if the local font server has problems, we can fall back on these FontPath "/usr/local/share/fonts/ttfonts" FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID" FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc" FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi" FontPath"/usr/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi" FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/CID" FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType" FontPath"unix/:7100"# local font server EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "DontZap" "false" Option "DontVTSwitch" "false" Option "BlankTime" "5" Option "StandbyTime" "5" Option "SuspendTime" "5" Option "OffTime" "5" Option "AllowDeactivateGrabs" "true" Option "AllowClosedownGrabs" "true" EndSection Section "Module" Load"GLcore" Load"bitmap" Load"dbe" Load"ddc" Load"dri" Load"extmod" Load"freetype" Load"glx" Load"int10" Load"record" Load"speedo" Load"type1" Load"vbe" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Generic Keyboard" Driver "keyboard" Option "CoreKeyboard" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" Option "XkbModel" "pc105" Option "XkbLayout" "fr-jcd" Option "XkbOptions""altwin:left_meta_win" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device""/dev/gpmdata" Option "Protocol" "ImPS/2" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Device" Ide

Hi, Should have closed this - it started working again a few months ago; can't remember which version actually fixed it, but its a happy GL X server now. X 4.3.0 regression with missing mouse
[ Please CC me on all replies ] I have configured Debian X 4.2.1 packages on a group of machines here such that two mice are configured - one on /dev/psaux, and one on /dev/input/mice, both configured as ImPS/2 and with core events. This worked fine when either port did not have a mouse connected to it. After upgrading to the experimental 4.3.0 packages, having a missing mouse causes X not to display the screen for about 30 seconds when either starting or switching from a console to X. (30 seconds is much longer than it normally takes to display). Removing the clause in XF86Config-4 for the disconnected mouse port causes the delay to go away. This is not a big deal, it just means that we have to specify which type of mouse is connected to a machine, and we can't allow for extra mice to be connected to either the PS/2 or USB port, case depending.
